First a word of warning! Destroyer is the second book in an on-going series, so tread carefully here. I’m issuing a SPOILER WARNING since I’ll talk a bit about what happened previously in order to establish Destroyer and a brief bit of discussion about that ending, which clearly indicates a book three is on the way.

You’ve been warned!

Destroyer, the latest from author Brett Battles and second in his Rewinder series, picks up on the heels of the previous novel, Rewinder. Now living as a sort of temporal refugee with his time- and reality-displaced sister, Denny Younger once again finds himself in the thick of things as an old foe unleashes a multitude of nightmares across the time stream.

Since changing the shape of the entire world in Rewinder, Denny is no stranger to the perils of time travel. His curiosity is piqued, though, when he begins noticing a strange man showing up in several of the same spots that he frequents. As he begins investigating the man following him, he’s loosed upon a much darker secret – just as his chaser (a.k.a his time travel device) is stolen and his girlfriend is kidnapped.

While I sort of enjoyed Rewinder, I had a hard time completely investing myself in the world because of a few too many leaps of faith in Battles’s narrative devices. I enjoyed Destroyer much more, since the world Younger now inhabits is necessarily stripped of prior book’s drawn out world building and its associated conceits (companions and an imperial caste system to name two). As such, the storytelling feels more focused.

With this being the second book in what is clearly shaping up to be at least a trilogy, we’re thrust right into the action, starting with some time traveling shenanigans to rip off a big-time Miami drug dealer. Denny is worried about the potential publicity and the record-keeping aspects of winning the lottery or placing high-earning bets, so he’s left to steal from drug lords instead, which also helps soothe his conscious given the wickedness of the drug trade. As it happens, this is also about as simple as his life gets over the course of Destroyer…

The pacing here is downright frenetic as Battles goes into full-tilt thriller mode, with a huge focus on action. This sucker moves along like a bullet train!

Unfortunately, that’s also where my biggest gripe comes in. Time travel is merely a device to feed the action, rather than being a focus in its own right. I had a similar complaint with Rewinder. There’s some great ideas presented in the complications wrought by interfering with history, some of them downright chilling, but Destroyer never slows down long enough to explore the changed landscape. While alternate timelines are given plenty of lip service, there’s no real depth. We only ever get the merest of glimpses before being jumped into a new time and place. Denny’s travels ever only feel like a minor historical footnote in the larger narrative, and it’s a bit frustrating because I actually do want to pause the story and look around. I want to see how Battles imagines a 1950s New York on police lock-down while World War II still rages on, but sadly, it’s barely a blip on his or Denny’s radar. This is a chase thriller, first and foremost, and although it succeeds in that regard, it’s also it’s biggest weakness. There’s simply no time for introspection or exploration because everything moves too quickly.

By the time we hit the finale, Battles has stuffed the breadth of history with so many complications that one has to wonder how (and when) Denny can even begin to start setting things right. And that’s likely where book 3 will come into play, since we’re left on a fairly abrupt cliff-hanger. Given the setting of that finale, though, I’m moderately hopeful we’ll finally get a chance to see the nefarious repercussions of all these time jumps in greater detail.

Disappointing is the word that comes to mind. I LOVE the Quinn series, and I liked Rewinder. This book, though, actually annoyed me. Several times I debated just stopping and not finishing- for a sequel that I wanted to read.... This is extremely rare.
( beware of spoilers)
Seriously, did we HAVE to go through all that time travel? After a awhile, it was just crazy. The amount of jumps and the fact that Lydia was just mad dog lunatic crazy did not make for a good read, in fact it was distracting and extremely frustrating. Don't think I can handle the third book- I don't even want to imagine all the jumps to just undo everything. Nope. I'll pass.

Sadly, I didn't enjoy this book as much as Rewinder. It was still pretty decent, but it very much felt like half of a book. It doesn't just end on a cliffhanger, the entire book just feels like set-up. We don't even really get to see the historical pay-off from the jaunts through history that comprise the second half of the book!

Another problem with this book is that there is NO character development.

Admittedly I did read this book for free courtesy of Amazon, so I'm not annoyed at a waste of money, and I will read the next one, but I was really excited for the sequel to Rewinder and instead I ended up being disappointed.

Denny gets dropped all over the world in multiple centuries in 'Destroyer', this second book in the Rewinder series. Lots of action and thrills listening to him quickly having to figure out where he is and then attempt to acclimate himself to his new environment all the while never knowing (but realizing it was coming) when he would be made to jump to a new and unknown destination. Narrator, Vikas Adam does a phenomenal job breathing life into all of the dynamic characters. Excellent series.

"Destroyer" by Brett Battles is a time travel book that also piques the fancy of those who love history. Thank you to Net Galley for sending me on this journey.

I did not read the first book in this series. That did not have an effect on enjoyment or understanding of the story.

The plot and the time travel journey speeds one along. One roots for Denny and his small group of friends as they follow a path across past history in an effort to protect time and all of us.

I really felt that Denny was painted into a corner at the story ending and am relieved that somehow he will come forth in book three and fix the "un-fixable."

I really like this author, and the first book in this series was not bad, but I had a hard time with this edition. It was very wordy and maybe I just don't like this type of story. I found myself skipping a lot of dialog just to get to the end, and then the ending doesn't finish the story. The main character is a person who has the ability to change history and the majority of the book is him trying to stop another person who can also do this. Even though I don't know what happened to the hero, I doubt very much if I will read the next installment.

This is the second in the trilogy, and I enjoyed it as much as the first. There’s a cliff hanger at the end, so I need to get to the third one quickly, before I lose track of the story line!

Destroyer picks up right where Rewinder leaves off. I had predicted the crux of the story at the end of Rewinder, but the author still managed a surprise or two. Destroyer has the same amount of history, and seems to jump into the action right away. The story was easy to follow, and a few of the reveals were predictable.

Two things bother me about Destroyer: The time-traveling Denny seems reluctant to do what he knows he must, and that ends up making entire portions of the book an epic listing of frustration. Without spoiling anything, the book should’ve ended about a third of the way through, the rest of the book was frustrating exposition. I know the author had to get us into the chase, but the tipping point just made me angry.

The second thing I dislike about this book is that it ends on the lamest of lame cliffhangers. While the nemesis from book one has been vanquished, many plots have been left dangling. If I’d purchased this book, instead of reading it through Net Galley, I’d have been pretty upset, maybe even to the point of asking for a refund.

Because of the predictability, it did take me longer to read Destroyer than it did Rewinder. It’s still a great read, but I’d probably recommend fans of Rewinder wait until book three is out to read Destroyer. I’d give Destroyer an actual star rating of 3.5, and if the ending didn’t make me so mad, it would’ve easily been a 4-star read. Definitely not as good as Rewinder, but still worth a read.

Book two has eased my anxiety over how time travel in used in the series. This story is almost exclusively told from Denny's point of view. Only a hand full of characters in this book which I liked, it allowed the author to focus on their development and growth. It almost became a bit too repetitive toward the end, but understand why it had to be that way.

Destroyer is the second book in the Rewinder Series. If you didn't read the first book, it won't make much sense to you. It's also book 2 in a trilogy, so if you're expecting some kind of resolution at the end, you'll be sorely disappointed.

With that out of the way, Destroyer was a good book, albeit with a few shortcomings. For example, the beginning focused on Denny's attempts to recharge his chaser. But the battery life of his chaser ended up having no impact on the rest of the story, so this almost felt like filler material until the plot began to move grudgingly forward.

Eventually, Denny discovers he's being followed by a dude who seems to know a little too much about him. That's when things start to pick up. Who is this guy, and what does he want? At first, Denny thinks he's someone from the old timeline, but of course, Denny is wrong. Very wrong. And his error may very well cost him everything...

Like I said, Destroyer ends with a chilling conclusion that is anything but a conclusion. I'm okay with that, though, and I look forward to reading the third and final book in the series.

My original Destroyer audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

Destroyer continues right where book one left off. Denny Younger has his sister and girlfriend and a new life in our time line. His chaser unit is running out of power and he has no way to recharge it. Instead of living like the rest of humanity without time-travel, he finds a way to recharge it and continue to jump and jump through space and time. Only, he’s not as alone as he thinks.

Time travel is messy, duplicate travelers, alternate histories, unpredictable consequences and oh, so much mischief to get into. Unfortunately, Denny, as smart as he is supposed to be, is pretty foolish about his time travel. He continues to get himself into loads of impossible problems which are bad for him, his girlfriend and humanity.

The plot feels like a free association with the author. “Oh, what if Denny did this or this?” Which could have been kind of fun, but often leaves the listener asking, “why would an intelligent person do that?” Perhaps if there was an element of humor, it might have worked better.

From a science fiction point of view, much of the technology is very hard to swallow. Time travel is more than a little problematic. Like going back 30 seconds in time and having just duplicated yourself. What if you did this a thousand times and created a you-army? Is the time traveler creating matter from nothing? Also, why build a plot around a power adapter? All that said, it is still fairly entertaining and you will probably want to listen to volume three. If for no other reason, to see how much more trouble Denny can create for the world.

The story is read by Vikas Adam who does an adequate job. Characters are good and the tone is appropriate for Denny’s age.

Destroyer is entertaining enough that you will get through the whole book. It is just that the scenarios don’t match the implied intelligence of Denny. You might want him to do better and the challenges to be less mechanical, less about physical strength and more about mental skill. If you enjoyed Book 1, you should like this one as much. Be warned, this one doesn’t wrap up nicely, definitely ending with a cliff-hanger.

I won this book on a Goodreads giveaway.

Although I was not too thrilled about the first book, I figured I’d give it one more shot.
As expected, there was a surplus of time travel throughout this book. However, it was straight and to the point. There were so many great ideas that could’ve happened than what originally did. When time is distorted, I don’t know about you, but I’d most defiantly go and explore. But Younger doesn’t even have enough patients to smell the flowers. Given, he is on a desperate mission; however, there was an incurable amount of potential in between worlds. I wish it went into a little bit more depth into what we were actually seeing and what had happened in history. This book could’ve really been a great way to learn about history, but it is more focused on the main character and his personal problems. Yes, that is what a book should do. But a bit of background would be nice once and awhile.
The choppy and clunky sentences return! A big reason why I didn’t enjoy the first book was just the style of writing. It does take a while to get used to, so I guess it was a good thing that I read this book immediately after the first book.

The plot holes! Oh, the plot holes! Sometimes it's just best to leave an obviously important, reassuring villain out of the story and just create a new one. There were plenty of chances when that was possible. Heck, it could’ve even been someone from history!

It almost seemed impossible for Younger to set the entire world back to how it was with only a few pages. I think the cliff-hanger was the best thing about this book. After spending numerous hours with these characters, I have to say that I am a little curious to see how the next book turns out.

When we left Denny Younger at the end of Rewinder it seemed that he was the last rewinder and was through changing history. Not so. In Destroyer someone from his past reappears and is set to do major danger. The title says it all.

That someone is determined to make Denny watch as the world is changed in ways that destroy severyone Denny loves. I love how Denny keep fighting in spite of the odds against success. This time the trips hit major tripping points in time and each time Denny fails to stop the changes.

Don’t look for a happy ending in Destroyer. We leave with Denny hurt in a world he does not recognize. The ending is a true cliffhanger.

The action is great, the characters interesting, the history fun and the plot intense. Great second book in the Rewinder series. Book three needs to arrive soon so I can see what happens to Denny and the history of the world next.

7/4/17 ~ ended up enjoying this more than I did the first time around I think. It's a good followup and while there are some lulls, overall it's enjoyable. Now I can finally get to reading the 3rd book.

====================
I was really excited to go right into this one and I was a LITTLE disappointed with it. It was still quite enjoyable but was a much slower pace than the first book was. I ended up guessing a few things pretty early on and there were some times that what was happening just slowed way down but it ended up being really good. The end was enjoyable and it left me wanting to know what happens next, and that's always a good thing when it comes to series. :)

I received a free advanced ebook copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Destroyer is book 2 in the Rewinder series.

This books follows on from where Rewinder left off. Denny is now the only Rewinder and only has one chaser, for which he needs a charger. Everything seems to be going well for him but then he notices that he is being followed by someone. However, Denny's chaser gets stolen and needs to get it back before someone destroys the lives of everyone he loves.

I enjoyed reading this book, maybe not as much as the first. There were many twists and things that I wasn't expecting and many moments where I was surprised with how things turned out.

Thank you to Netgalley and 47North for the advanced copy.

A good follow up

Although this is a good follow up from book 1 in the series, it is not quite as entertaining, don't let me put you off, but there to seemed to be a lot more of a an adventure in book 1. This episode in the rewinder saga seemed to confuse me with the too many time jumps in the latter part of the novel and although I can normally manage to keep pace with the most complicated of plots, I did find myself confused or maybe puzzled and found myself backtracking on several occasions to keep a line on the story.
Looking forward to the next book in this saga, especially after the ending of this novel, which caught me by surprise.

This book has a decent concept, but terrible character behaviors. I can only take so many instances of a character making stupid decisions to move the plot along. I literally had to stop reading this book for days at a time because I was so mad at how dumb the characters were acting. Very reminiscent of the 2nd Twilight book, and how whiny Bella was. I get that this is a YA series, and they might not pick up on it, but I'm not willing to give the author/series a pass because it happened REPEATEDLY.

The sequel to a waste of time is... well, if I only I could travel back in time and not read this book. OK, I'm hard on teen-lit, but once again the time traveler who at least had a compelling set up in the "Rewinder" has to face his crazy nemesis again--and this time she's only out for revenge and to mess up the world for no other purpose. That's the whole book--oh, if you think, but it's short, so I can just know this out, well it ends on a cliff-hanger--I think I'll let it hang this time.

Cliffhanger warning :(

A cliffhanger ending, in a book that is already losing my interest, is not a welcome ending. The characters are becoming difficult to root for. Iffy is stupid enough to repeatedly get captured, and used as a hostage. Denny repeatedly loses fights with a woman who probably has never done a day's labor in her life. Maybe the world would be a better place if their timeline gets erased...

The main character spent too much of this book as a passive passenger. Or, if not passive, then ineffectual. Then it ended in a cliffhanger I wasn't expecting. I wouldn't have read this until the next book came out if I had known. Left me frustrated and annoyed.

The first book's ending left a vast amount of potential for this to be really good. But it just kinda wasn't. Denny was really annoying in this book and, though I did finish it and start reading the third, I quickly realized that I just don't care any more.

Pretty good first half. Its a time travel adventure and sequel to "Rewinder."
The last third sucks. I guess you are supposed to buy the next one to find out what happens - but that ain't happenin' here.

Tedious

Jump jump jump. Jump jump jump. Be dragged around. Be dragged around some more. Skimmed most of the book. Got tired of no plot advancement.
