MANTON! DARTOR! MOTIVATIONAL ORB! Heroes for the ages! As they set out to save Earth, our hero Keith Kanga retires to a life of luxury on Kaptara! But can he resist the siren song of guilt? A perfect jumping-on point for people who've read issue one!
Chip Zdarsky is a Canadian comic book artist and journalist. He was born Steve Murray but is known by his fan base as Chip Zdarsky, and occasionally Todd Diamond. He writes and illustrates an advice column called Extremely Bad Advice for the Canadian national newspaper National Post's The Ampersand, their pop culture section's online edition. He is also the creator of Prison Funnies and Monster Cops.
The second issue made it apparent to the reader the direction Zdarsky is going with Kaptara; humor in the vein of He-Man taken to parody levels. This reader would admit that this book is funny, as lone survivor Keith adjusts to a new world with strange folks and potentials for his sexual conquests. The problem though is with Keith, he's quite unlikable and this reader hopes that he undergoes a hero's journey to make him a bit more palatable.
Oh, Kaptara, you are so pretty and weird and full of male humor. If I were the boy version of myself, you might be my favorite thing ever. As the alana version of myself, which is to say, me...I'm more intrigued by looking at the crazy creatures and settings than the actual story unfolding. Purple castle shaped like a man in agony? Yes! Motivational Orb? Hang in there! Cat tanks? More facetime for cat tanks and spidery palanquins, please! I love the bird lady and the hunter lady (who looks like an alien version of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1!). But there's just so many man moments that I'm assuming would be funnier if I'd lived with boy bits all my life? Anyhow! I'll come back for skinny wizards, I suppose, but those fancy ladies and beasts better save the day!
Funny, ridiculous (and I normally just simply don't like ridiculous) but there is enough of a He-Man on acid vibe that I can run with it for a while. It could end up being brilliant or simply a dumb waste of time, but issue by issue, it has been worth it so far.
The wildly varying aliens of Kaptara are delightful, reminding me of Saga while feeling entirely original. I find the art style less compelling, and the story is obviously much lighter, but the character development is real.
This was a fun read. I credit this as being part of my renewed interest in comics, I picked it up randomly at a sale at a comic book store because it had a nice cover and interesting art. I was treated to a well developed world with witty humor and a lot of silliness. I may or may not finish this series in the future. I don't want to commit myself to something that I know ended prematurely, but it has solidified the name of Chip Zdarsky in my mind and given me another writer to potentially seek out in the future.
