Not awful, but not awesome either. It just seemed to go on & on, dragging down what could’ve been a much more exciting plot.
My biggest issue is the long-windedness of emotive ramblings & continual justification of whatever action is taken. The MCs internal monologues repeat themselves several times over—there are 4 MCs total, two Russian siblings & both their love interests, & they all have hangups that need to be addressed for HEAs—while the villains are one-dimensional & uninteresting antagonists. It’s one thing to be an evil creeper for the sake of being an evil creeper, but there’s no real interest on the reader’s part without a solid motivation and/or some sort of depth beyond “lolz, I’m a lazy sadistic asshole!”
The other problem is a thin historical backdrop that doesn’t play much part in the story beyond providing an excuse for Anton & Anastasia to be using a mercenary (Caleb), paying for a live-in seamstress (Natasha), or traveling to Paris in a huge rush (retrieval of Important Papers). There was no real sense of Russian social strata, no feel of it being a different time in a very different type of culture compared to Napoleonic Europe.
So. I can only give 2.5 stars overall. :/ But I rounded up for the glorious technicolor cover & the fact that it at least *tried* to use a setting that is woefully underrepresented in HR.
NB: The sex scenes are more porny than most Zeebs. You can also tell the author was trying to infuse some dom/sub elements to Anastasia & Caleb while still satisfying the vanilla Zebra publishing standards; it’s no wonder she later turned to e-pub to let her erotica flag fly.
