Artist and writer R.L. Black skillfully creates a gorgeous environment with distressed inks, retro-styled dot coloring, and deteriorated paper textures to give you the feel of a vintage comics experience. The magnificent art mixed with the profound concept based on his own recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction creates a unique and immersive reading experience.
This is the first issue in an ongoing series as the main character, the "Nameless Monster," finds his way through the second world war and finally joins a movement far more significant than he could have imagined.

Amalgamation

Like Frankenstein's monster (apropos, eh?), this book is an amalgamation of compelling elements:
Likes
+ Nazi killing, ALWAYS down for this!
+ Monsters that are more human than some of the humans.
+ A mysterious plot/origin story....
Dislikes
- Some of the panels were a bit too....hallucinogenic for my aesthetic tastes. There was such a kaleidoscope of colors I couldn't feel the gravity of the events/story.
- I see the value in the temporal shifts but this had a hard time establishing continuity for me. Rather, it didn't feel cohesive, more like a patchwork.
Summarily, this is a promising start to a series with monsters, Nazis, legends, & revenge. The art style won't be for everyone, but there are good bones I'd like to see filled out here....and again, these puns write themselves (*shrug*).
