The book is divided into three parts. The first establishes the cultural setting of ancient Egypt, with chapters on its geography, archaeology, history, art and architecture. The central section of the book takes the reader on a journey down the Nile, calling at some 90 sites where significant discoveries have been made or spectacular monuments stand. From the rock-cut tombs of Aswan to the pyramids at Giza, from he treasures of Tut'ankhamun to the shifting sands of the delta, the reader is transported effortlessly by means of maps, photographs, site plans and descriptive accounts of the visible remains. A further journey takes the intrepid traveler into Nubia and to the temples of Abu Simbel, rescued from the waters of Lake Nasser. The third part considers important aspects of Egyptian society and daily life.

About the author

John Robert Baines is the oldest son of Edward Russell Baines and his wife Dora Margaret Jean (née O’Brien). He was educated at Winchester College, an all boys public boarding school in Winchester, Hampshire, England. He went on to study Egyptology at the University of Oxford. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) in 1967, later promoted to Master of Arts (MA). He gained his Doctor of Philosophy degree (DPhil) in 1976.

Baines was Professor of Egyptology at the University of Oxford from 1976 to 2013. He was one of the youngest tenured professors at the university at the age of 30. He is also the author of multiple scholarly articles and publications relating to ancient Egyptian civilization.

His research interests are in Ancient Egyptian art, religion, literature, and biographies; modelling ancient Egyptian society; comparative and anthropological approaches to ancient civilizations.

Fantastic images that are great for reference and context, particularly the numerous maps of nomes and caravan routes.

I personally found the text to be difficult to read due to small font size and incredibly dry narrative style.

Perfect book for the coffee table though and I would definitely recommend as reference material.

Dit boek is schitterend uitgevoerd. Het is een boek over de geschiedenis en aardrijkskunde van het oude Egypte. Het boek volgt de Nijl, de hoofdader van het land van zuid naar noord. Het beschrijft de geschiedenis van zo’n dertig eeuwen, de bouwkunst, de koningen, de tempels, de godsdienst, het huiselijk leven zover we dat kunnen kennen. De foto’s zijn van hoge kwaliteit. Met dit boek kun je in je leunstoel reizen en meer te weten komen over een van de grote beschavingen van inmiddels duizenden jaren geleden. Men bouwde al piramides van zo’n honderd meter hoog; daarvoor waren ook technische vaardigheden nodig.
