I have collected poetry books all my life but some, for some reason, perch unused on the shelf for decades. This was one such book. Its plain and brown--not a favorite color--cover giving it an appearance non-impressive. A chapbook. A student. Nothing special. The book began with good poems and got better as it went along. Writers are attracted to that which we might have written ourselves and I kept seeing lines and images that I might have written or wished I did. One poem of hers spun me off to my computer to write a long and fierce poem of my own, thoughts bubbling beneath the surface suddenly unpent because of her thoughts written so many years ago when I was only first beginning to record my own. Nevertheless, I may have rated this book four because I am rather stingy with my stars. Until I came to the last and longest poem. A poem so fierce that I was compelled to add that fifth star.
