Fantastic! Call of Doody is clever, witty, and fun for both parents and children to read together. My 10 year old son couldn't put it down! Here is his review:
"I really liked this book! One of my favorite things about it is how the author changes words to make them sound more funny. Like instead of saying "spectacular" it says "pooptacular". I like how creative and detailed the drawings are and I think it's cool that it's based on video games, because video games are appealing to many kids. I would recommend this book for other kids! "
This graphic novel by David Mansch focuses on several present-day struggles of parents: the impact of video games on the brains of the young; family time missed because of the addictive nature of video games-no matter how fun; and the imagination in each of us that goes untapped with the busyness in our world. Mansch unravels these themes with such poise that the reader gets lost in the exciting story while still absorbing the importance of family values and the good-natured, pure entertainment. The novel’s pictures are incredible and capture the feelings and mood of the story every step of the way. My grandkids, Jack, age 9, and Norah, age 10, both read the book and enjoyed it so much. Hearing their giggles, told me that this book is spot on with the comics and timeless sense of humor of the young, especially the boys of this age group. Little sister, Kitty, makes the story come alive for female readers too. Adults will enjoy the clever antics of Baron Buttz and Steve as well as the hilarious alliteration and the mix of video game jargon and potty jokes. Any child interested in video games of any kind or just superhero fans will love Mansch’s S.N.O.T.S Call of Doody. Readers will be very anxious to devour the next book of the series.
"Call of Doody" is a delightful book that perfectly balances humor, adventure, and colorful illustrations to create an engaging experience for kids. It has the perfect blend of video game culture, quirky characters, and a dash of potty humor, this book offers a captivating reading journey that will appeal to both young readers and adults alike.
The book cleverly incorporates Rusty's gaming knowledge and skills, making it relatable for young readers who share his passion. The colorful artwork enhances the storytelling, immersing readers in the imaginative world Rusty explores.
The inclusion of funny potty language adds an element of silliness that for sure will get a kick out of anyone. This aspect of the humor is thoughtfully balanced making it a joy for families to enjoy together.
"Call of Doody (SNOTS, #1)" is a must-read and a great addition to any young reader's collection. Its ability to appeal to both children and adults makes it a fantastic choice for shared reading experiences, sparking laughter and imagination in readers of all ages.
In my opinion, it is difficult enough to write a book about anything - but to write a book, align the story via illustrations (that, themselves, tell their own story), and have it hit home with adults and kids alike makes what Dave has woven together a fantastic add to anyone's library.
I got the chance to read this before passing it to my kids, and the fact that I (46 year old man) giggled at the same parts as my 8-year old son means this comic/book will do the same for anyone who picks it up.
From the character creations and their storylines, through the variant elements of landscapes/space-scapes to the usage of comical names for the sidekicks, everything folds together so well; I didn't realize I was reading for as long as I was until my legs started cramping from sitting on the floor (don't you miss the days of being able to do that without knowing you did it hours later?)
Congratulations to Dave and his family (the inspiration for this book - and hopefully, many more!) Laughs, learning, and levity - this book has all three in spades...
"Call of Doody" by David Mansch is an enjoyable read, especially for kids. The book effortlessly weaves together engaging storytelling and captivating characters. The author's talent for creating suspense leads to a satisfying cliffhanger that leaves readers eager for the next installment. Overall, "Call of Doody" is a great choice for young readers seeking adventure and excitement in a well-crafted tale.
My 10 year old daughter has been obsessed in reading graphic novels. She will sit and read them front to back within a few hours. For Call of Dooty, it was no exception. Never have I heard her laugh while reading a book. Once done, she said she loved it, adored the illustrations and very funny. My youngest son and I will be reading it next! Can't wait to get some laughs out of him before bed!
The words of an 8yr old - this book is super cool, funny and fun. It is really creative with great pictures and interesting characters.
Words from an 8yr olds mom- my daughter was captivated from page 1 and couldn’t put it down. She has a great sense of humor and laughed out loud when reading! She even asked if there were more books to continue the story!
My 8 year old daughter loved this book! Here are a few things she says about the book: “I liked how it was really funny. It was a just-right book for me to read. I like how it was a comic book. I like how they used a giant doo doo in it. I liked Butts and how he was really funny looking with the suit and thing over his head, body suit and buckle.” She is excited for book #2!
I liked it a lot. The bad guy has a funny name and uses funny prank weapons. My favorite characters are Rusty Crumb, Newton Bean, and Steve. The drawing is great, and it’s cool how I can tell the difference between when it’s real and when it’s video game people. I’m glad there is a second book! (Nicholas G., age 9)
My 2nd grader found a cozy chair for this and did not leave until she was done. It was filled with laughter and she has since reread it many a time. For fans of books like Dog Man, Cat Kid, or Captain Underpants this will be a winner. Loved the art, loved the story, loved the book!
This book was great! It's cleverly written and beautifully illustrated. My son was laughing through the whole book and loved looking at the pictures. Highly recommended to anyone with kids. The witty style has humor that only adults would catch while the more obvious potty talk kept my son entertained throughout the read. It is clearly one of his favorite books and he's quoting it now all the time. Can't wait for the next Call of Doody!
