FROM FORMER GREEN BERET AND USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR JASON KASPER For David Rivers and his team, the mission was supposed to be simple—retrieve a defecting militia leader and deliver him to CIA interrogators. But nothing is simple in Yemen, where vast swaths of terrain are controlled by Houthi and Al Qaeda fighters. When they locate the asset, the team discovers why he has been deemed critical to their intelligence effort. The defector has direct knowledge of the team’s top Erik Weisz, the shadowy figurehead behind the most catastrophic terrorist attacks since 9/11. And as it turns out, Weisz is currently in Yemen, traveling through Houthi territory with heavy security. As David’s crew prepares for a follow-on operation to remove Weisz once and for all, they discover a web of contradictions. A sudden order to stand down leaves the unit questioning the motives of their CIA handler. With suspicious leadership and a deadly conspiracy looming, the team boards a military aircraft to infiltrate the most dangerous corners of a war-torn desert. David is convinced it will be their bloodiest mission yet—and within hours of being inserted deep into the badlands of Yemen, he and his team realize they are pawns in an exceedingly deadly game of chess.

David River is back in Lethal Horizon the seventh book in the Shadow Strike series by Jason Kasper. This is one of the best yet in this series and some things will be revealed that you didn't see coming. The banter in the small group of warriors is one of the things I really like about these books and they travel all over the world on their missions. I'm stuggling to keep up with reading these books by Kasper since I started at the end and have to get all the old ones and catch up on the story. I will recommend the books and thank Severn River Publishing and Edelweiss for letting me read this advance copy.
In Lethal Horizon, David and his team go to Yemen for a mission and, of course, nothing goes as planned. Great plot, cast of characters, and thrilling action. My only problem with this book was the over describing of certain scenes. I have been a fan of Jason Kasper for quite some time and will continue. Thanks to Severn River Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC and I highly recommend reading this book; or anything by Jason Kasper.
I was actually shocked to see that we were already 7 books into this series. It feels like just yesterday that I was introduced to David Rivers and his crazy crew. Well, anyway, when I saw that there was a new book out, I didn't even think twice about requesting the ARC.
While this book is not a stand alone book, I think that the series itself is at a point where someone new could drop in and not be too lost with the things that are going on. With that being said, what makes this series so captivating and intriguing are the relationships that have developed over the last 6 books. Relationships between David and his team, between the CIA and its contractors (specifically those in charge of Project Longwing) and in this book, we are introduced to a new element when there is a surprise group thrown in to the mix.
This series revolves around a team of 5 men. Ex-Military men who have been in combat in some form or another for most of their lives. Men who have gone through the ringer together and who have had to depend on each other continually to survive. Mr. Kasper talks a lot about the "warrior caste" and how that defines David's psyche and his sense of self. This book actually goes into much more detail about this than before and we get more insight into each member of the team and how they have been affected by the situations they have been thrown into during the last few years. The team has had to learn to survive not only when they are on missions, but together, they've had to navigate an employer who seems to think they are disposable. Not a great situation to be in.
The plot of this book continues the over arching storyline from the last several books as the team is continuing the search for the HVT - terrorist Erik Weisz. This time, the trail leads to Yemen. Personally, I found that whole setting extremely interesting as Mr. Kasper does a really good job of describing the political atmosphere of Yemen and I can honestly say that I had no idea how extremely complicated that entire country is. That doesn't even take into account the descriptions of the Houthi's - a terrorist organization that has been in the news recently with all of the attacks on the US that have been occurring in that part of the Middle East. So, the mission setting was extremely dangerous, BEFORE things got complicated.
Without going into spoilers, I'll just say that the team finds themselves in quite a mess, without necessarily having any reliable back up. The action starts from the very beginning of the book and does not let up until the very last page. Everything that I have liked about this series seemed to be taken up a level. Mr. Kasper's expertise in this genre, the realism of the storyline, the amazing constant development of the characters, and the real life dilemma of doing the "right thing" when WHAT the right thing is....is debatable. There was action, drama, suspense, intrigue and ultimately.....betrayal. It felt like the team had gotten to a breaking point, yet you just knew that the strength of their bonds were what was going to get them through an almost unsurvivable situation.
So, definitely another winner. This storyline may have reached somewhat of a conclusion, but at the same time it feels like it also may have just opened up a can of worms, or as David says, "it was like stepping on a pregnant spider". The next book or two is going to get very interesting and I am looking forward to seeing where things go from here.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC. The opinions above are mine and mine alone.
David Rivers and his team are assigned to capture or kill a target in Yemen. They have to go into a territory controlled by terrorists. While on the mission they find a member of another team that was sent on the same mission, but his team was captured. Rivers decides on doing a rescue in addition to the original plan. A lot of action that keeps your interest.
At the risk of repeating myself (because I seem to say it after finishing each of Jason Kasper’s books), this is probably the best one yet.
From the dual stories at the start of the book to the hair raising action scenes (of which the author is becoming an absolute master), to surprises galore, to an ending that makes me await the next of David Rivers’ team’s mission, the field is full for yet another grand slam.
What a non stop action mission!! Go for their ultimate target as if that's not enough, then another "mission " falls in their laps. We know they always complete their missions at what ever cost!!! Very exciting page turner!!
Excellent, action-packed, thought provoking, immersive read that was an excellent addition to this series.
What I liked: * The team: five intrepid, highly skilled, lethal, dedicated, admirable, and intriguing men that worked together seamlessly * The bond between the team members, the synchronicity of their actions, the use of their skillsets and their uncanny way of reading one another as well as the situation * The location and learning more about the geography, people, and politics in Yemen * Being able to see this story as if it were playing out on a big screen in a theater * Thinking about what it would take to do the job that David and his team undertake as well as the impact it must have on them and their families * The opportunity the team has to encounter and perhaps neutralize the boogieman they have been chasing * Thinking about the information shared by someone they questioned and hoping that what he said was fiction and not true in the real world * How pertinent to current political issues the story is * Getting to see and catch up with David’s family * Thinking about what the future of the team might be
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like * Thinking about some in power and how easily they made questionable decisions – questionable to me anyway * Knowing that many of the dark parts of this story actually do happen in real life
Did I like this book? Yes Would I read more in this series/ by this author? Yes
Thank you to Severn River Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.
Rivers and his team are back with their biggest challenge yet! What started as a simple yet dangerous mission to rescue an intelligence source becomes a chance to finally take out terrorist financier and kingpin Erik Weisz, the ultimate goal all their other missions have led up to. To do so, the team has to navigate the most inhospitable place on Earth with the least amount of resources. It looks like a suicide mission from the get go, but along the way they also discover a secret - they're not the first team to get sent in for the task.
Having read each book in this series, I enjoyed not only the additional insights into the team's members - spoiler here, but Ian has gone dark! - but also the vivid descriptions such as landscape, places, vehicles, and weapons that brought the story to life. Add in the subplot involving their secret discovery, and you have a compelling read from start to finish. While the team may achieve their goals by the end, they soon learn their ultimate mission is far from over.
Jason Kasper grips the reader from the jump with LETHAL HORIZON, the eighth novel in the Shadow Strike series.
This novel finds David Rivers and his team seemingly nearing the endgame when they discover a target packet for their #1 HVT, Erik Weisz. However, things are not as clean, cut, and dry as the Longwing Team would like, and what should be their victory lap turns into a hair-raising, blood-drenched foray through Yemen.
It's clear that Kasper has done his research on Yemen, weaving the facts of the civil war there into the story. The hallmarks of a Kasper thriller are there: realistic action, suspense, and top tier dialogue that is often comedic. The twists keep coming and leave the reader on the edge of their seat until the conclusion.
Special kudos to the ending. Too many thriller novels nowadays end immediately after the final firefight. Kasper actually takes a few chapters to show us Rivers post-mission (with a pleasant surprise in his personal life) and set the stage for the next novel. I miss when that was the standard and am glad Kasper does it here.
The changing of the guard is finalized and there’s a huge surprise out of nowhere. And of course, there’s no transparency at all. The entire book literally keeps you on the edge of your chair. One chapter is a masterpiece unto itself. You can trust the accuracy of the secret ops of five undercover operatives because Jason was a former Green Beret, etc.: precision, chaos, precision, chaos…improvision is a constant factor. For those of you who have read the previous Shadow Strike series, you will notice a new dynamic shift between the five main characters. The ultimate goal is accomplished but at what price and with how many lies. And exactly how does a family life fit into this mix? I have read all of this series of thrillers as well as his Spider Heist series. This is Jason Kasper at his best.
David and his team are back and this time they are in Yemen.
The Shadow Strike series is one of those I actively watch for new releases as I love it so much. This has the same ingredients that make the previous books so good - the banter between the team, the writing style that puts you in the action with the team, the fast paced high octane action I have come to know and love.
Jason Kasper knocks it out of the park yet again with this book.
Lethal Horizon is a wonderful introduction to Yemen and its internal troubles with many groups or factions controlling various parts of Yemen and the whole country in disarray and on the verge of anarchy. This is a story of a group of mercenaries roped in by the CIA clandestinely to take out a terrorist leader. The story follows a standard pattern but what is interesting about this book is the detailed description of Yemen and the various factions within and how this group of mercenaries navigate through the country and complete their mission. Of course, there is some sermonising towards the end on how no single group i going to terrorise the world and how it is getting spread across the world through social media. An interesting reading nevertheless and worth the time spent.
If book 6 was great then this is brilliant as the team closes in on Weisz.
I can't describe just how brilliant this series is and it seems to me that each story is better than the previous one, if that's possible. There's also more nail biting action and a couple of shocking revelations along the way to increase the tension the and the gallows humour between Cancer and the rest of the team made me laugh out loud. The whole series is brilliant and this book is no different. Outstanding from start to finish.
I received an advanced copy of this book for my honest review. The series is great and should be read in order. I believe that this is the best book in the series so far. The book starts fast and the pace slows occasionally for the reader to catch a breath. As I stated before this series should be read in order to get the main characters figured out and remembered. The next book can’t come fast enough for me.
As the series continues, it keeps to getting better.. The strike force seems to be pawns as they face a foe more nefarious than anyone should oppose, but add in the duplicity of their so-called support, and you get a taut, fast-paced action thriller. I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher and voluntarily provided an honest review.
When David and his team are sent in to remove an asset in Yemen they have no idea that it may lead to their greatest and most searched for terrorist yet. But true to form there are always curveballs and impossible decisions to be made.
This book will keep all of us hanging on for the next word.
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Intense, intimate teamwork in pursuit of Erik Weisz
Yemen, a no-man's-land of terrorists, disregards international protocol. Even the great minds at CIA cannot guarantee personal survival. Depth and wisdom emerge in this book, most likely because the author has been there and done that. Awesome.
In Yemen, the team finally closes in on the man they've been hunting all this time - but the mission to take him down is complicated by yet another curveball. Nonstop action and a good twist. Gotta say, I'm glad this arc of the story has finally come to a close as I was getting a little impatient. Intrigued to see what comes next.
Another good read with lots of action and great characters. Added suspense is another team in Project Longwire that was unknown to David and his team. The new leader at the CIA is not to be trusted and has no care what happens to either team as long as the mission is successful. Great interplay on those dynamics. Would recommend highly.
Probably my favorite in the Shadow Strike series. This was well written. Full of non-stop action, but not too far over the top. A couple of intense emotional moments between members of the team. And, a couple of unexpected twists. I'll be curious to see how far Kasper will take this series along, especially since a very HVT has been eliminated.
Another read until two in the morning. His interchange with Langley adds the frustration and confusion into the mission which isn’t needed. However Rivers manages to overcome decisions made without on site information critical to mission accomplishment. Good thin* I don’t have to work the nex5 day. VR, Mags,
Once again Jason Keeper has done a great job at a fast paced crazy adventure for David and his team. Look forward to their next mission to Africa and what falls on their shoulders.
I don’t know how he does it, but Jason Kasper’s writing keeps getting better and better as each book progresses! Moving on to book 8 in the series: Congo Nightfall.
Rivers and his band of Mary men are task with capture or kill #1 terrorists. It's a set up buy as usual they try to work around it. Hard to put down once you start reading
A continuation of the Shadow Strike group. Well written and researched. Full of twists and turns woven together into a fascinating storyline that you will not want to put down until you finish it!
Can't wait for the next two books. These have been nonstop action. You can tell the author has experienced situations that civilians never even thought about.
