Brown River is the coming-of-age story of Constance Gonzalez, a soul-searching tomboy raised on the eastern shore of Maryland. Drawn to the vivid waterways of the Chesapeake and captivated by the lore of fishing boats, Constance sets out to find her calling on the sea.
But her journey costs more than she bargained for. Shackled by family expectations, derailed by false hopes, foiled plans, heartbreak, betrayal, and the mockery of men who claim she took up the wrong kind of work — Constance must abandon her safe notions of success and summon the courage to pursue her unlikely calling.
Told in luminous language and richly imagined, Brown River is a tender, big hearted tale of love and loss, trust and betrayal, the strength and fragility of family — and ultimately a tribute to the power of kinship and a celebration of life.
Constance has a dream to be a riverboat captain. She has a long journey. This is a heart touching story of finding a home and sharing it with the ones you love.
I thoroughly enjoyed following Constance along through all the twists and turns of the Brown River. She faced real and significant challenges along the way which formed and developed her character and relationships. The author shows an impressive grasp of boating and fishing which uniquely adds to the richness of the story. I look forward to reading Balleza's next installment whatever that may be!
