A cruel bishop. An ancient weapon. An ultimatum. Violet’s mind begins to unravel in the bishop’s secluded mansion, where she is tortured by the mysterious General Scarth. It’s only a matter of time before she gives in to the Bishop’s demands, but how much is she prepared to sacrifice along the way? And why is Albert stalling their escape? When the full moon rises, the grounds once used by the Mouldering Duke for his infamous werewolf hunts loom before Violet in a game of survival. And the howling begins…
~~~ Forged by Angel & Hellfire is book 4 of Not the Same River, which follows Violet as she goes from gobby orphan to gobby warrior in this six-book series. This book features a blood club owning succubus, a legendary vaewolf, and an archangel who definitely wasn't at the nativity.
I didn’t think the story could get any darker, but after this installment, I have a strong feeling it’s only going to keep descending.
This book gives us a clearer sense of what’s really going on, and what we learn dramatically broadens the scope of the story. The world feels even larger now, and it becomes clear that everything is far more complex and high-stakes than we originally thought. That said, the revelations about the long game raise more questions than answers, leaving the story in a tense, suspended moment that’s both frustrating and compelling.
One of my favorite aspects of the book was the continued development of Violet and Albert’s relationship. I’m a complete sucker for romance, and their bond felt like a light in the darkness. Even when everything around them was falling apart, they found strength in each other—and that emotional grounding really stood out.
Of course, even that light isn’t without its challenges. This book begins to seriously address the aftermath of what Violet has been through, particularly her PTSD. I appreciated seeing the early stages of her recovery and the care Albert has shown so far. I’m very interested to see how this is handled moving forward in the next book.
And then there’s the mystery: it seems Violet may still have powers neither she nor we fully understand yet. The secrecy among the archangels nearly drove me mad, I need answers!
Overall, this book left me deeply curious and eager to see where the story goes next. ^-^.
