I've read Nathan Hystad's novels for a few years now and have always enjoyed them; with BELOW US, Book One in THE ABYSS Trilogy, Mr. Hystad has batted straight out of the ball park! This novel has it all, for aficionados of Science Fiction, Apocalypse, and Lovecraftian Cosmic Terror. I was enraptured, and honestly, terrified: the danger here is nonstop. Even for readers who don't believe in deep-ocean or underground Horrors, there's earthquakes and sinkholes, there's human devolution as many individuals revert to something less than animals, in the face of hopeless desperation and literally unstoppable danger. Plus there's commutation of Nature and Nature's Laws, there's Genetic Mutation [of humans and animals], there's lemming-mob behavior, and excitingly for me, Mutated Fungi! I am anxious to read Books Two and Three! Yes, we have cliffhangers--multiple! Yes, we have multiple protagonists [remember, in an Apocalypse, too large a gathering attracts too much attention], and many of the protagonists are operating on their own skewed agendas....and the slap-in-the-face, what-just-happened twists! There's lots more, but I don't want to spoil: just read it!!
I think the title says it all. The story line was juvenile. A waste of my time.I am actually very annoyed at the author . Thank god I got this book from my kindle unlimited account and did not spend money buying it,
I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book since it went from one character to another but I ended up liking it a lot. As soon as I finished it I started book 2 in the series. Now I'm almost through with book 2 on audible and the third one isn't there yet. I try not to start a series unless they're all out but I didn't pay attention this time. Shame on me!
There no romance and no swearing. That's kinda boring. Aliens and people being altered into monsters and no one says "oh, shit," or "damn," or anything. As much as I liked this series I wouldn't read this author again. If authors can't be a little bit real they should be writing only YA, or coming of age or children's books, IMO.
As for the narration: Marc Vietor is doing an amazing job.
This book is a shoddy attempt to merge 4 or 5 story lines into one themed novel. It fails miserably. The author would have been much better served by choosing ONE theme and ONE set of characters to tell ONE story. If it ever all comes together, I ran out of patience and interest way before that happened.
Narrator was good, but story and characters were just boring, couldn't do more than 2.5 hours and punched out, life's too short to waste on mediocre books.
Below Us is the first in yet another exceptional thrill ride by the outstanding Nathan Hystad. The story follows several different story arcs, as we learn about how a company called Nu-En, run by a man Garner Vikas, is all set to uncover a new invention, an energy source that is going to provide power to every person on the planet. Desperate to cover the story, Luna Wells a journalist for a pretty decent paper, does everything she can to get to the initial unveiling of this invention, and surprisingly, manages to get a full invite from Vikas himself. Meanwhile, we are also introduced to Wyatt Rider, the former boyfriend of Isabel Vikas (Daughter of Garner Vikas), who is pretty down and out at the moment, and on his last hopes with a job at a finance company. But they are desperate to, given the times, and are using him just to get at Vikas. This puts Rider in a situation where he reaches out to Vikas for the unveiling, and Rider finds himself getting invited to it as well. However, there are strange things taking place around the city in which the unveiling is to take place, strange creatures being sighted, and strange animals with a bizarre mucus on them. In one such instance, another character Blaze Madden, a single father at a work site, is sent to check on one of his workers who hasn’t been seen for a while. He finds the work site compromised by a huge tear in the earth, and when he finds the missing worker, he is also covered in the mucus, but he is changed, with claws, fangs, and psychotic, and in the end, Blaze pushes him into the tear to save his own life. Back at the unveiling, things go terribly wrong, and what should have been the start of a new era for mankind, unleashes a terrible energy into the atmosphere, something that causes people and animals to start morphing into psychotic mutants. The story turns from one in which we are following a group of rather different, but interesting people, all coming together for a new invention, to one in which most of these same people are now running for their lives, trying to get away from populated areas and work out what to do next. Without giving away too much, each of the main characters in the story has a vital role to play in trying to correct the terrifying mistakes that have been made, and prevent a future in which humanity may not exist. We follow Wyatt and Luna, along with a group of people they have gathered as they try to achieve their goals. In the meantime, Wyatt’s former girlfriend, who still holds a flame for him, Isabel, also has a vital role to play, and is trying to escape Los Angeles with the help of an ally. As they make their way to Wyatt’s old home town of Boulder, they make contact with Blaze, and the group he has gathered, including his son Luke, who have had their own journey. Hystad has again created these epic stories, reminiscent of the scale of Stephen King’s The Stand, as these eclectic individuals come together, in the face of desperate times, and fight not only for their own survival, but for the continuation of humanity. All the while, these creatures that appear so utterly alien, but at the same time, are so incredibly human, dripping mucus as they try to infect others, move everywhere, attacking anything they see. This includes infected animals as well. It makes for a terrifying landscape that our characters have to move through in what is an almost alien world now, with these strange cloud bursts as well. The Character work of Hystad’s stories continues to be one of the highlights as always, with every character not only being unique, but bringing the story to life, so that you feel like you are living it, and a part of it. Wyatt is the guy who tries, but things seem to run against him, and you feel sorry for him. But he never gives up, and he keeps going. Luna is what you kind of dislike in journalists, that instinct to stick their nose into everything and do stupid things just for a story, but at the same time, she is also a nice person, and you can’t help but like her. As the story progresses, she becomes even more likeable as we see her with other friends and family and her interactions with Wyatt, especially some of the selfless things she does. Blaze is the model single Dad, Mum passed, and he has been left with a young son to care for, and has dedicated everything to him. He is what a Dad should be. Blaze is all street smarts, he knows his kid is going to be smarter than him (if he isn’t already), but is happy with that. He works hard to make sure he has everything he needs, and when the crisis hits, it is all about Luke. This is going to be another brilliant thriller, I have already pre-ordered parts 2 and 3, in ebook and audiobook, it is an absolute must read.
Below Us is an apocalypse/post apocalyptic novel that has enough twists and turns to keep you reading. I’m not a big consumer of post apocalyptic stories these days. That being said I was hooked and read this book voraciously. By the time I was 33% of the way thru I was starting to feel like I dreaded reading the last page in the book. The character development is a strong point of the book in that it’s reeled out slowly not just delivered in a clump. The author has a way of making it feel like a first person perspective but in fact the book does this for multiple characters and groups of characters. The result is it made me feel part of the story. The stage upon which the movie takes place is a slowly crumbling infrastructure which makes for a challenging but rewarding scene. The plot rolls out slowly and the hints are cryptic in some cases but it will keep you guessing. I recommend this book to all readers it’s the kind of book that helps set a higher bar for other authors to aspire to. I’m looking forward to reading the next two books in the series but this book is able stand on its own.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Frighteningly, it seems plausible such a scenario could happen - what with all the new technology springing up all the time... but I sure hope not! I was enthralled with the realistic writing of the author and didn't want to put the book down!! I'm on to book 2 and can't wait to finish and start book 3...
The writing exquisitely weaves the lives of the survivors and the 'others' so well, that this makes it all the more realistic. It showcases what humans are capable of, for good and not so good... and the odds of surviving these events is constantly mind boggling! As scifi goes - how can you not love the robots? On a darker level... and a bit of a spoiler alert... I wish I could stake Garner to a beach and let mutant crabs slowly devour him...lol...
I've not had the opportunity to encounter so much terror and 'what if' in a book series, in a very long time... I have a very active imagination, which came into play throughout the entire book and I guarantee it would make a fabulous movie/TV series...
I don't think anyone could find fault with with anything in this book - let's hope the next two books are as wild and exciting as the first one!
Below Us digs deep into the depths of our planet while using its very genre to keep our beloved characters alive. The only thing that will keep you from finishing this book is the Static. Wyatt just landed a new job on Wall Street thanks to his recent ex girlfriends father. He left sunny CA to get start over but is immediately pulled back into his ex’s life when his new boss needs a whale of an investment from the man who helped get him the job, Garner Vickas. Luna is a journalist covering Garner’s secret energy program where he declares he could provide power to the world for free! Wyatt gets a meeting with Garner to view the big launch but is also offered a job. Luna finds out about the big reveal and sneaks her way into the big launch. Everything seems to be working when creatures from the deep sea threaten the new energy free world and sends Garners invitees into the sea to fend for themselves and try to stop the destruction of our planet.
This is my twelve book that was written by the author Nathan Hystad and amazingly each of them never fails, it’s not normal but somehow he does it with his amazing imagination. In short a supposably free energy experiment fails and mutations start showing infecting others getting them to mutate, the question is if it was planned or an accident was finally revealed but many unanswered questions remained. Waiting for the second book Before Us, of this trilogy “ The Abyss “ will not be so easy, it will be pure Hellish.
Marc Vietor excellently narrated this creation for each of the characters in this book.
Absolutely and without a doubt got my recommendations !
When you think monsters and scary things aren't real, but when they come from the depths of the abyss, and venture out of the deep, you know humankind is probably in trouble. That's a given, right? But Nathan Hystad has taken that premise several layers deeper. A new energy source has come to life after decades of research and testing and even test subjects. A new source of this energy from the ocean when harnassed will produce free electricity for the world. The characters are as diverse as the mutants, including the robots. Only 8% of humanity will survive globally. What damage has been do e to earth's core, the plates are shifting, a part of the coast has tumbled i to the ocean. Snowflakes seem to be pouring down from the sky, but they're sticky. I could not put this book down snd so hapoy I already got the second one, sonif you'll excuse me I need to get back to it!!

Apparently, Vikas knew that creating Static to power the world would have disastrous consequences, but he had contingencies. What they were and why he did it are confused. Terrible creatures and mud that changer people to monsters came from fissures in the earth. The planet forever changed? There were survivors. They banded with robots created by Vikas. The robots led the way to sanctuary. Or death.
Brilliant characters and an amazing storyline told by a master storyteller, bring the Abyss to life. And gift us a great read!
Alright now your talking!! Instead of going into space let's explore the Oceans and Seas and crack our mantle open and see what's there. So now what, you can't put it back once it's out so moving forward out hero's are going one direction and our heroine is going on another. Great start and good characters with the storyline going in a good direction. Not going to spoil it for people, but I hope the second book continues in a good way. So if your looking for mutants and hero's here it is.
Alright. Not great, but alright. It seems just a little flat somehow. Like there's a lot left to coincidence, and things progress too conveniently. I realize that can happen in books, but it really stands out here.
I'm realizing I've listened to other books of his, and had the same feeling with Other Place, Lost Contact, and Lost Time - annnnd out of desperation for my next book to listen to, I started The Event. The guy definitely seems to crank out A LOT of books - good for him! I'm just noticing a trend...they really seem all too similar to each other.
Yes! This was fun because it was a fast, wild ride. No, I don’t think there were any new ideas but what Hystad did was put things together very well. I loved the women. They were tough, smart, nuts, scared, brave, and determined to survive. The protagonist was the kind of guy you want to succeed. The creatures were icky and just right. So far the kids aren’t annoying. And I love The Three! Now I just have to wait impatiently for the next installment. Hurry!
Yes, it ends with a cliffhanger but I knew that going in.
I enjoyed this new story from a great author. A wild read that is almost believable as trouble abounds and it seems like the end of the world. And our plucky main characters are on task to save the world, maybe. Glued to the end to see what Wyatt must face ans survive as the insanity unfolds. Loved the action, danger, characters and figuring out what is going on. Cannot wait to see what happens next.
Sorry... I just can't haha. Maybe a spoiler, but combining fortune tellers (more magical) to absurd scientific advancements (from a seemingly 21st century timeline) to maybe aliens? Oh and some genetic "immunity" to rapid mutation? Too much going on and none of it done well. Would have preferred to pick one thing and do that well.
Don't get me wrong, it's a good try, interesting story otherwise. But I have no desire to continue the series.
Those that came before us, were they monsters or maybe we're the monsters, I've seen mankind as both good & evil. That's why God gave us the Word. Only Jesus was truly good, and look how he was treated! I believe the character Vikus, was both good &evil, but made poor choices. Got to read the next book to find out.🏦 Maybe his middle name is trump, just selfish &power hungry! God help us if the one we know gets elected again.
Loved getting to know each of the groups and watching them being lead by a robot to escape the post apocalyptic world that has occurred after Static was released. Is Vikas the true enemy he appears to be? I guess we will have to wait and see. Loved Wyatt and Luna’s relationship.
Another very creative adventure into Science Fiction. Author Nathan Busted has a wonderful imagination. You never know where his books will lead you. Below Us is just such a book. I found hard to put down with strange new facts making the story extremely interesting.
I just couldn’t get behind the premise of the story. Too many coincidences and the absurdity of every body gets a robot to help them get through the mess of 92% of people turning into troglodytes or sea creatures who just want to get below ground or into the ocean abyss. I love most of Hystad’s books but this one was a big miss/mess. I did finish it but will not complete the series.
I was unsure about this one at first, figured I would take a chance. The events happening in this series reminds me a lot of David Gerrold's Chtorr series which I enjoyed years ago. The characters in this series are likeable, at least most of them. The story development is good and I am looking forward to the next book in the series when I get to it.
Nathan has written another best seller for us reading junkies. At first glimpse seemed to be a repeat of survival of the fittest. But the cast is one that will grow on you real quick. There are lots of plots and twists with plenty of action and suspense throughout the first two volumes. AN exciting new story from author Hystand.
A lot of old sci-fi tropes running around in this book - the end of the world, robots, seemingly a good idea gone wrong…But, it’s a fun read. The people (and the bots) are interesting. So far everybody is getting out of all the deep wholes and deep waters that they get into. (Pun intended)
I finished the book two recently. I am eager for the third in this series. The popularity of the book is warranted. The story is a bit more in the fantasy direction. That being said, the author seems to have fantastic character-building skills, which for me it's the main strength of this series. It has a tiny bit of romance, not too much, and it has a decent amount of American culture packed.
The book started great with interesting characters and a good plot. You sensed a "but" and for my tastes you're right. It became a world filled with zombies and I don't like this kind of novel. Maybe I didn't read the description well enough, but I got about 1/3 of the way through and stopped reading. I've got so many on my "tbr" list that I don't have time for books that turn me off.
Pulpy, but entertaining. There's not really much mystery or complexity in this end-of-the-world adventure novel. There is a novel disaster, though, and there are enough characters running around that you don't get bored. It feels like one of those disaster movies where they keep jumping from one prospective to another so that the audience doesn't miss any of the action.
This is told with three different groups of people, which makes for a lot of characters. But they're easy to follow. There are a fair amount of plot holes - how things got the way the did, etc. And plenty of author's prerogative to make it up as he went along. It kept my interest and the audio by Marc Vietor was great.
