Dealing With It: My story of overcoming abuse and learning to live a life

Rate this book
The true story of the effects of physical, mental and sexual abuse on Donna, all before she had turned 16 years old. The impact on her psyche, adulthood, relationships and her total lack of self-worth, especially when it came to her marriage.

The constant state of stress which led to therapy and illnesses from thinking that she was dealing with it in her own way. In all honesty, the truth was she had done anything but!

The cataclysm of her Dad dying and that sense of loss, finally meant that she had to find herself and actually deal with the past properly. The book goes on to show how she discovered personal development, writing and a love that she deserves.

Dealing with It by Author Donna Taylor is a poignant memoir of her life and the effects of physical, mental and sexual abuse before she turned 16 years of age. Throughout her story the reader can see how the effects of childhood abuse can lead to long term health conditions and how these conditions can be exacerbated through continued exposure to stress. Her writing is both sensitive and emotive, as she explains how the abuse affected her self confidence, decision making, and relationships. Following the death of her father, whom she had a difficult relationship with, Donna must confront her past and find a way to heal and live with the scars.

Whilst the subject matter may be uncomfortable for some, Donna’s story seeks to raise awareness of the effects of childhood abuse, and many who have been through a similar trauma will resonate with her words. For me as a reader, and a survivor of abuse, books of this nature, only go to show that we can never truly know what goes on behind closed doors, and in someone’s life and therefore we should always treat each other with kindness, patience and understanding.

What I particularly liked about Donna’s memoir is how she not only shared these painful events with us, but then she goes on to share what she has learned, and the tools and techniques that enabled her to cope and come to terms with what happened, to enable others to find their way. And for that reason, I would encourage you to read this, because many of her life tips and her ‘Be, Do, Have Activity’ apply to us all, no matter what type of stress or trauma we are suffering from. We all have stressors in our lives and we are not all as resilient to those as we would like to believe.

I cannot say that I enjoyed reading Donna’s memoir, but only because I cannot enjoy someone else’s pain. However I connected with Donna on an emotional level and I found her hints and tips, life affirming and her activity beneficial in steering me through my own challenges in life. For that reason I am awarding 5 stars.

A memoir of author Donna Taylor and the effects of mental, physical and sexual abuse and how every aspect of her life has been affected by the abuse.

In reading this book you can see the situations that the author found herself in over the years were a direct result of the abuse. Whether it be in her choices of boyfriends, drinking, hanging out at the pubs and meeting guys you could sense her lack of self esteem and self confidence. The author struggles with numerous health issues causing her to lose jobs or leave jobs on her own and there were many jobs. I also noticed that she moved many, many times throughout the story.

Her dad had a drinking problem which caused problems at home leading her mom to leave him several times and eventually divorcing him. Which resulted in her mom having several men in her life one of these men being the root cause of the sexual assault.

I wasn’t a fan of the way the book was written but also understand it is a self published book. I felt bad for the author and what she went through and the challenges she faced.

Thank you Voracious Readers Only and the author for a copy (ebook) in exchange for an honest review.

This was a fast, but emotional read. I was expecting a little bit more out of it than I got. I feel like it was done well enough, but there wasn’t as much heart-wrenching about it as I had expected. She goes through some awful things, no doubt. I don’t know, I think it just fell flat for me. Maybe it didn’t have enough vulnerability for me. It was fast, though.
