Seth and Evan met "on the job" when Evan was the intended sacrifice of a dark coven, and Seth came to the rescue. Now, they've teamed up to stop a century of ritual murders and get justice for Seth's brother Jesse and the other victims. Seth and Evan have a plan to stop the next witch disciple, plus new allies and magic. But this time, the warlock knows they're coming, and he has plans of his own. When Seth disappears and is trapped in a spell that gives him his heart's desire, can he free himself in time to help Evan? And when Evan's younger brother shows up unexpectedly, can Evan trust Parker to have his back? It all comes down to trusting the devil you know! Contains mature themes.
I love, love, love this series. That being said...in spite of it getting my usual 5 stars...it was probably my least favorite of the entire series. Our two guys were apart from one another throughout almost the entire book!!! In book #5, they were cursed with a spell that they couldn't touch each other. You sure know how to stop our hearts, Ms. Brice! That one had a good ending so I held my breathe while wishing...hoping...knowing, that Morgan Brice surely wouldn't do that to us. Somehow she would bring them back together. (fingers crossed). Without Seth, who was occupied visiting his dead family curtesy of the warlock that they came to Cleveland to kill, Evan had the opportunity to show us how far he had come in his training with Seth by setting in motion the plan to rescue Seth. We met some amazing and sometimes downright scary new people that answered the call to assist Evan in his efforts. We also saw Evan reunite with the obviously only good person in his homophobic family, his younger brother. Parker turns out to not only be buckets of help but I'm happy to see that he will probably appear in future books...and please, please, please, let there be many, many future books. This series and Morgan Brice's "Badlands" series are my absolute favorites. I never get tired of reading them. I'll soon start my 6th rereads of both series. Ms. Brice should have had time to write book #7 by the time I get back through book #6. Believe me when I say these two series are magic in more ways than one.
After five books, I thought I knew what to expect. Seth and Evan are still very much in love, probably even more, they want a future together, to be bonded forever. Sadly they are still trying to bring down the bad guys and this time is even harder than in the past books. They are targeted right away. Since they've been hunting witches, the new baddie already knows they're coming and he is prepared. Things won't go as they want from the very beginning and it's full of twists and unexpected visits. Evan's brother reaches out and joins his brother in the action. I always suspect new characters because they can be evil and in magic mystery books, everyone can turn out to be bad, and also characters who seemed bad at first maybe turn out to be not bad at all.
I always describe this series as gay Supernatural because thry also say it in the book. I love the story style and how they go around US cities. I find myself googling these places because I want to know what they are seeing and see it all with my eyes. It's fun!
The MCs have less on page interaction here compared to previous books because, as the blurb says, Seth finds himself trapped. They still manage to be sweet together, and their time among themselves and also when they're investigating is always something I look forward to.
so good and interesting.. i love this couple.. love this story.. love this plot and whats going on.. love it all.. the action.. the plot.. the characters.. the ups and downs.. the likes and dislikes.. the writing. its all wonderful
I love Seth and Evan together, so this time around it was definitely a change from the usual as they were apart for the majority of the story. But one thing this did allow for was a chance to shine a spotlight on those other members of the supernatural and paranormal-adjacent community who help support their fight against the witch disciples. It also showed how the guys can work independently from each other just as well as they can together—though obviously they’re better together ;-)
Seth and Evan get separated pretty early on in the book, and from there we know it’s a race against time to reunite them before something terrible happens. I was unsure how I’d feel about them not working together for the whole story like they usually do since I love the interaction between them, but it didn’t really bother me. I liked the introduction of Evan’s brother, and the part he played; I’m hoping we’ll see him pop up in future stories in the series (or any of the author’s other connected series).
I was on edge for most of the story with Seth being missing, and the author did a good job of keeping that tension level high. I felt myself getting just as impatient as Evan to find Seth, and just plain frustrated with the situation in which Seth was trapped in his own mind.
It was nice to have Kale Williams narrating again, and his even tone and pacing along with consistent character voices made this an enjoyable listen. The story itself was a 4.5-star read for me, and the narration gets 5 stars.
Edited on 1/22/23 to add my comments on the audiobook: Audiobook Review: Overall – 5 Performance – 5 Story – 5
I read this book with my eyes back in February 2022 and loved it. I loved it all over again when I listened to Kale Williams perform the audiobook. There really isn’t anything else I can say so I’m pasting a copy of my original review below:
Kept me on the edge of my seat!
Monster hunter books are not normally the type of book that I pick up. However, since reading my first Morgan Brice book just a little over two years ago, I’ve become a huge fan of her stories. She has a lot of different series to choose from under her Morgan Brice pen name and lots more from her Gail Z. Martin pen name.
All of her stories connect in one way or another but you absolutely can read them as standalone books. I actually haven’t read the first three Witchbane books yet (sad face) but I never felt lost while reading the remaining stories in the series. She does an excellent job of giving you the background information you need from previous books, while at the same time not having you feel like you’re re-reading stuff you wouldn’t want to. I hope that makes sense. 😊
In The Devil You Know, Seth and Evan continue their quest to eliminate the evil witches who have been systematically killing descendants of the people who killed a warlock over 100 years ago. This time they find themselves in Ohio and most of the action takes place in Cleveland.
I loved that we got to meet Seth’s family and that Evan was reunited with his younger brother, Parker. This is a story with a lot of depth to it as well as heart-pounding adventure and suspense. Even though each book in the series has been about finding and killing the bad guys, I’ve never felt like I was reading the same story again. There are always new angles, research, and characters which help to keep the series fresh and new. The romantic connection between Seth and Evan also keeps getting stronger and stronger. I’m sure there will be many more adventures ahead for this duo, because they still have several witch disciples to hunt down and eliminate, and I’ll be here waiting to read them.
A copy of this book was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.
Morgan Brice continues to amaze me with her Witchbane series! I've only read the first 2 books and this one, but I never felt lost. There was enough background info to catch me up with what had happened before and I'm really enjoying where this series is going.
I loved that The Devil You Know provided Seth with something he'd been looking for ever since his brother died. Although it was bittersweet seeing how amazing Seth's family was. At the same time, I loved seeing Evan work with some new and familiar faces to rescue Seth.
This book was fast-paced, action-packed, emotional, and riveting. I've said it before and I'll probably say it again, reading a book in this series is like reading a fantastic Supernatural episode and I'm definitely here for it. Highly recommendable!

Wow! Seth and Evan are tracking down Gremory to Cleveland but Gremory knows they are coming. The story gets intense very quickly and doesn't let up. Evan's brother Parker joins the team unexpectedly and it very helpful. It was quite surprising how we meet Seth's brother Jesse. It was lovely and tragic. There are cameo's of characters from other books and we meet Joe Mack, who has his own series I've not yet read. It's a great book. A great ending. I can't wait to see what comes next for Seth and Evan.
This was fantastic and definitely pulled at the heart strings. Seth got kidnapped, so Evan had to work with allies to save him and to get the next disciple. I've always been so sad for how much Seth misses his family, and I loved getting to know them, even if it was in such a different way. I just sobbed for him as he got to "spend time" with them. I'm glad we got to meet Evan's brother and some new friends. I can't wait to see what comes next. This series is absolutely wonderful.
"The Devil You Know" is the sixth installment in the "Witchbane" series by Morgan Brice, and thus a volume in which the danger is increasing, death looks more and more boldly in the eyes of our heroes, and the reader follows the story with a wildly beating heart. So far, our boys have had sometimes larger and sometimes smaller advantage of surprise attack. However, at the moment they have lost it irretrievably. On the literary side, the novel undoubtedly benefits from it, because it is more unpredictable and the reader is definitelly more interested in the story. What happens next with our characters depends even more than ever on the author and her mood, because the greater the danger means more opportunities for irreparable "damage" to the characters. I think that is what we fear most when we read an unpredictable novel and "The Devil You Know" is undoubtedly this type of story.
This volume of the series is also a source of indescribable emotions and fear for the characters. The way we have traveled with Seth and Evan has brought us so close to them that not only their joy, but also their anxiety and fears are ours. When reading "The Devil You Know", we often put ourselves in our boys' shoes, which intensifies the emotions that fill us while reading. The reader really feels fear for the heroes, and just like them, tries to find a way out of a difficult situation, to predict the next move of the enemy, to ensure the safety of another person. Reading this novel, we are part of it, and because the action is moving forward very quickly, we cannot tear ourselves away from reading, which means we are locked in the amazing and dangerous reality of the "Witchbane" series. In short, loyal fans of the series will not be disappointed.
Already in the previous installment of "Witchbane" we saw that our heroes, although fighting together for a good cause, to some extent had to struggle with it all alone, because the opponents targeted not only Seth and Evan as a group, but also as individuals. In "The Devil You Know" the fact that they fight together, but nevertheless separately, has intensified even more, which puts our charatcters in an even more difficult situation. It is easier for all of us to fight by someone else's side than to choose the path of solitude, so I am convinced that the struggles of our boys presented in this volume reach deeper into the hearts of readers and have a greater impact on them. Eventually Seth and Evan began to fully rely on each other, worked out a tactic to fight together, and now the enemy wants to deprive them of this advantage of unity at all costs. This really adds a lot more drama to the novel as it affects not only the action of the novel but also the romantic element.
Speaking of the romance in "The Devil You Know"... Until recently, Seth and Evan's crusade was a threat to their lives, which made us worried mainly about their health and physical condition. Now, however, I feel that the enemy is also trying to threaten the relationship of our heroes. After all, their love is their strength. So if the balance that the boys have developed in their life together is turned upside down, it is impossible to predict how it will affect Seth and Evan's relationship. Are they strong enough to survive enemy attacks? We want to believe it. But after all, our boys are only human. So how much can they take? It seems to me that many readers will ask such questions when they reach for "The Devil You Know". It shows how with each volume the series changes and evolves along with the characters.
All in all, "The Devil You Know" is a really great continuation of the "Witchbane" series. It keeps you in suspense, makes you think, pulls us into this amazing world created by the author. This is a true must-read novel.
___________________________
Czytając „The Devil You Know” wielokrotnie stawiamy się w pozycji naszych chłopców, co potęguje przepełniające nas podczas lektury emocje.
A skoro o romansie w „The Devil You Know” mowa... Chcemy w to wierzyć. Ale przecież nasi chłopcy są tylko ludźmi. Ile więc są w stanie znieść? Wydaje mi się, że wielu czytelnikom nasuwać się będą takie pytania, kiedy sięgną po „The Devil You Know”, co pokazuje, jak z każdym tomem seria zmienia się i ewoluuje razem z bohaterami.
Podsumowując, „The Devil You Know” to naprawdę doskonała kontynuacja serii „Witchbane”. Trzyma w napięciu, zmusza do myślenia, wciąga nas w ten niesamowity świat stworzony przez autorkę. To prawdziwy must-read.
Gail Z. Martin aka Morgan Brice continues to be one of those authors whose work excites me to distraction. Among the plethora of titles she has written, she is also responsible for her universe of the paranormal, which includes such series titles as (writing as Gail Z. Martin) DEADLY CURIOSITIES, SPELLS, SALT & STEEL, and NIGHT VIGIL. Writing as Morgan Brice we have TREASURE TRAIL, KINGS OF THE MOUNTAIN, and FOX HOLLOW. Each of these series has its unique charm and tone making them wildly fun to read. They can also be quite thrilling and suspenseful as has been her WITCHBANE series, and with her latest novel of the series “The Devil You Know” she digs into one of the most intimate and personal parts of the human psyche, that being grief and loss.
Our heroes are Seth Tanner and Evan Malone. Seth’s younger brother Jesse was killed as part of a century-long series of murders, and not long after that, his parents were killed in a car accident. He took it upon himself to track down all of the men (witches) responsible for Jesse’s death in the hope of saving the lives of these witches’ potential victims. He rescued Evan from such a fate and in turn, they quickly became not only partners in this crusade, but they also fell in love with each other.
Brice’s latest “The Devil You Know” delivers a surprise by having Seth face his loss. To make it worse, it was done in a manner that was quite heartbreaking to read. The way this was done is not entirely unfamiliar, but Brice wrote Seth’s emotional journey in a way that hit me very hard. I dare say that anyone who has ever experienced a significant loss of a loved one might find Seth’s part of this story to be extremely resonant. Even before his arc is finished in this book there are telltale signs that when Seth comes out on the other side that he might be quite shattered by the experience.
Seth’s journey isn’t all that makes up this book. One of Brice’s greatest strengths in her books is the universe building that takes place and she does that through the introduction of new characters, and this happens here in such a delightfully enjoyable way. While our heroes are still relatively new (less than a year in their time) in their quest they are introduced to characters that are not only greatly more experienced, they’re also brought in with their unique skills and strengths making them extremely interesting to learn more about. I would not be surprised if some of the new characters we meet here are spun off into their series. At the very least, I can hope that we will see more of them soon in some of the other series Brice writes.
With its strengths, I only have two very minor quibbles. First, the final confrontation with this book’s villain felt too short. Our hero Evan, along with his new allies, did have some challenges he had to overcome before his final face-off with this book’s evil witch, but this time it almost felt too quick for it to resolve. The other was the aftermath of Seth’s tale. I felt there was a great opportunity to explore grief in its various stages, especially the bargaining stage given what Seth goes through. We only get glimpses of what Seth is dealing with after their battle with the witch and I would have liked to have seen something a bit more in-depth. Nevertheless, these two points did not take away my enjoyment of the book as evidenced by my sadness when I finished reading the last page. I was not prepared for the story to end!
I give “The Devil You Know” 4 out of 5 Garnet Rings.
The Devil You Know comes out on February 8, 2022, and can be purchased at Amazon.com
This sixth book in the Witchbane series was a one sitting, can’t put it down read for me. The suspense and tension was high and I kept waiting for a shoe to drop so I was on the edge of my seat, especially close to the end. (Well, not really since I was under a blanket in a recliner but you get the idea!)
It’s hard to say much about the book while at the same time trying to avoid spoilers. Seth and Evan are on the trail of the fifth witch from the coven. Their hunt takes them to Cleveland but this time the witch is ready and waiting for them which alters their usual plans for tracking the witch down and getting information. Plus there’s an added dimension to the danger this witch presents. New allies will be introduced to help them in the fight and personal issues will distract from the problems at hand.
One of the best parts of this book gives us a deeper look into both Seth’s and Evan’s family lives from before they met. The author uses a very clever and interesting story element to explore sibling relationships. It helps shape the story so well and is at turns joyous and heart wrenching. In fact the whole structure of this story is just so well done, unique, and clever. It also presents some challenges for our MCs allowing them to shine indifferent ways and take on different roles than usual.
A question I have been pondering as I’ve read the series is raised here though no answer is provided. That is, what happens with Gremory as each of his disciple’s rituals fails this time around? We get the scene in each book where the disciple is grabbed by the master and sucked into the purple light. Does this mean Gremory is actually getting stronger and that as the hunt goes on Seth and Evan are actually feeding and strengthening the OG bad guy? Will they be dealing with him after all 12 disciples have been killed? Or is the failure of the ritual a blow to Gremory as he requires the successful ritual? We’ve been told the ritual keeps the disciple immortal and keeps Gremory trapped but as each ritual fails the disciple is sucked into Gremory’s realm which is just at the surface of our realm and he must gain some power from sucking in the disciple, right? For some reason this book really has me thinking about the endgame more than usual. I’m hoping for a Voldemort ending but feeling tense like it might be a Thanos thing.
Regardless, the book is a fantastic read and now I’ll be on pins and needles waiting for the next one.
**I voluntarily read an arc and this is my unbiased opinion.**
Reviewed for Love Bytes – 4.25 hearts On route to Cleveland, hunters, Seth and Evan, become the hunted by a prepared witch who is expecting them. Both sides have people to help in high and low places. Add into the mix a prospective supernatural bad-guy who knows how to take people to places full of memories and more, and we’re left with a situation that is both dangerous and beyond emotional. The Devil You Know is the sixth story in the Witchbane series, and in many ways, the story comes full circle, returning to its roots – not geographically, but emotionally. As with all the Witchbane books, this can be read as a standalone. The backstory is explained – which given that it’s been a while since I read one – I was thankful. This tale is told in the third person from the viewpoints of Seth and Evan. Alongside some super imagery/worldbuilding, it includes remote appearances from known associates from previous books and new characters that added an exciting twist to the plot. It’s a shame the dreaded line ‘Come for me’ makes an appearance which is firmly number one in my room 101 – buuuut that’s personal to me; other readers must not be fussed or love it; else the phrase wouldn’t appear in sooooo many books. The opening chapters get into the motivation and psyche of the characters, which makes the story a more sedate read as far as action-packed paranormal hunting is concerned. But there is a huge emotional impact for Evan and Seth. As the blurb says, Evan’s brother turns up, which brings to the fore more of Evan’s family backstory. Been as the blurb doesn’t mention much about Seth – all I’ll say is that his journey was heartwarming, heartbreaking, and heroic. In a nutshell – I smiled and cried. Once I started this story, I found that I had to finish it as quickly as I could because it’s addictive. However, the repetition of some thoughts and nuggets of information suggests that it is expected to be read over a longer period - either that or they’re ‘story so far/don’t forget’ checkpoints of some sort. Doing a bit of research and seeing other visiting characters with their own series – it is clear the author has immersed themselves into this world. If my reading experience was anything to go by – there will be plenty of readers willing to sink into the world of Witchbane, too. This book was provided free in exchange for a fair and honest review for Love Bytes.
In the first book of the Witchbane series, we learn that combat veteran Seth Tanner has two jobs; IT security and witch hunter.
His predominant prey is a coven of century old warlocks, who extend their life with human sacrifice every twelve years. And all from the same family line.
Evan Malone is working under a pseudonym (Sonny) in Treddy's bar, Richmond, to escape a stalking and abusive ex, when Seth turns up at his bar, and one night of fun leads to them hiding out together as Seth attempts to save the next planned victim; Evan himself.
Also grieving for his brother Jesse (an early victim) and out for revenge, Seth will do everything to save Evan, a man who has become very important to him.
Six books later and Seth and Evan travel the roads of America chasing other supernatural baddies, making love, using magic, blowing shit up and saving the day.
And along the way they've made great allies: an eclectic bunch of root workers, vampires, shifters, nerds and much more.
In this book, the couple are after the fifth witch who knows they're coming for him, and instead takes the advance, kidnapping Seth.
So behins a frantic hunt to find Seth, and the warlock.
There are Easter eggs and character cameos from other books by Brice and her 'other' name Gail Z Martin, plenty of action, drama, humour, hot bedroom scenes and romance.
There are some truly bittersweet and poignant moments in the book that deal with everything from trauma, dealing with the repercussions of being gay in a religious family and grief.
I love the worldbuilding of this series and the others that Brice has created. Yes, it's clear to fans that Brice/Martin loves the TV show Supernatural and it's influence can be seen here, but she adds new dimensions to this type of story and she is a great writer.
The supporting cast, particularly Joe, is terrific I think we will see more of him, Jenna, the Supernatural Secret Service Parker and Nelson.
This was an incredibly rewarding and emotional book that brought me real joy to read.
If you love paranormals and can handle some heavy themes, the Witchbane series will blow you out of the water. I would never discourage anyone from starting up a book, even if it’s in the middle of a complex series, but I really believe you need to read the books in the order they were written in to get the full effect. That being said, book 6 is as wild and thrilling as its predecessors.
Seth and Evan are the central figures, and their mission was to destroy a dark coven of Immortals that prey on human victims. Seth lost his beloved brother to one of these monsters, and he trained with Paranormal Experts and Hunters to destroy this pack of ritualistic murderers. He is on a mission to stop the century-old traditional killings. Evan was slated as one of the victims but was rescued and joined forces with Seth. They became a committed couple along the way, which adds to the story.
Out of the 12 original warlocks, just six remain, and the demon preparing for the next ritual knows the men are after him. This adds new drama and heart-pounding scenes. Seth suddenly disappears, and Evan is desperate to get him back, but time is running out.
Ms. Morgan really pulls you into this world where the darkness threatens to overtake humankind. This book excels with creatures of your worst nightmares battling decent paranormals that protect humankind and, of course, our two heroes, Seth and Evan.
Even though having the same theme of destroying the dark warlocks, the books are distinctly different. This tale had a bittersweet component that was a real tear-jerker, bringing closure to Seth. I highly recommend this latest quest, and now I will wait patiently for the next story. Happy reading!

It's nice to see the Witchbane boys back -it's hard to believe that it's been two years since their last full length novel.
And this one was a good one to bring Seth and Evan back, and Brice does a good job here of advancing the overall story arc while recapping a number of past events, almost serving up a "reboot" of sorts. The witch villain, Osborn, is interesting and quietly threatening, while Seth and Evan gain some more allies in their fight, this time with Joe Mack and the Supernatural Secret Service, and Evan's brother Parker. The allies are needed as it becomes clearer that the witch coven that Seth and Evan are fighting has its hands in a number of supernatural conspiracies and as such are becoming more difficult to battle now that the element of surprise has been lost.
It's a nice touch with Brice expanding the story to include other characters from her world in a way that makes sense, and it helps freshen up the story a bit. I had started to become somewhat skeptical as to whether she could keep the story fresh as it went along without repeating too many of the same beats. There aren't necessarily shocking twists in this story but there are some interesting surprises. So far I'm happy to say she's defying my skepticism and I'm looking forward to more books in the series and seeing where the story goes.
One strange aside- maybe it's just me but the sex scenes with the characters here just strike me a bit oddly. Maybe it's just the intensity of the overall story that makes them seem out of place to me (I haven't noticed this in Brice's other series) and Seth and Evan have chemistry but I'd be curious if some of the other readers of this series feel the same way. I love the stories regardless, either way.
I have read and thoroughly enjoyed books from other paranormal series written by Morgan Brice. When I saw ‘The Devil You Know’ offered as an ARC on audiobook, even though I’ve not read any of the other books in the ‘Witchbane’ series, I felt comfortable enough with Brice’s writing style to request a free copy. While I wouldn’t recommend starting at Book 6 in normal circumstances, I will say that Brice provides enough background information to make it stand alone well.
If you’ve made it this far into the series, you know it follows one couple throughout, Seth and Evan, who have become witch hunters due to REASONS. They’re on the trail of another coven member in Cleveland, but it appears their reputations have preceded them and the witch is anticipating their arrival. This complicates their hunt considerably. The plotting of the paranormal elements of the story are straight-forward and easily understood, which is nice for a newbie like me.
The story is paranormal, but what I appreciate most is the family relationships depicted in this book. I won’t get too spoiler-y, but there is a very significant portion of the book spent in the past (only not really–you’ll see), that allows Seth to gain some closure about his past. That alone made the entire story worth the listen. Evan is also afforded chunks of narrative in which to resolve some of his family issues. The book is emotional with all-around great storytelling.
It’s been a little while since I’ve had the pleasure of listening to a Kale Williams narration. His soft-spoken performance puts a nice touch to the story and cements him as a favorite narrator of mine.
I have been impatiently waiting for this book. Seth and Evan are my absolute favorite. I’ve rated all of the Witchbane books 5⭐️ mostly because of the way this author writes. She sucks you in and I have to stay up all night to finish the book because I can’t sleep until Seth & Evan are safe again. Her writing style is so simple yet so fluid. And she writes about locations all over the country, and you can tell she researched every single one. Morgan Brice/Gail Z. Martin is an automatic buy for me.
This is the first book that I’ve had to give 4⭐️ instead of 5. For one big reason - Seth & Evan spend almost the entire book apart. Their chemistry and the way they fit together has driven the other books and it’s not there this time. The plot kept them apart for too long. Sure, new side characters made for enjoyable additions just like the previous books, but I wanted the main two guys! I was so disappointed.
On a side note, Seth really needed some closure after what he went through when he and Evan were apart. Something, anything for his PTSD. He hadn’t even told Evan what happened (and it was big time bad/sad) when the book just ended. And no epilogue.
Overall, Seth & Evan are still my favorite and Morgan Brice is still my favorite too, I just didn’t love this one as much as the others. Oh, and do yourself a favor- at least read the first book so you understand how dangerous the whole situation that Seth & Evan have put themselves in REALLY is. The author can tell you a quick back story but book #1 tells everything. It’s golden.
The latest installment in Morgan Brice’s *Witchbane* is back and just as exciting and heart-stopping as the rest of the series. Just like previous books we follow Seth and Evan as they continue to hunt out the witches who are systematically killing off the eldest son in a select group of families to sustain their ill-gotten power and lives. The stakes are higher than ever as our MC’s no longer have the element of surprise on their side and are beset with challenges from the moment they roll into town.
Without giving too much away, family was an important theme in this particular book and in ways that really pulled at my heartstrings. Seth’s arc, in particular—done so creatively here—was bittersweet and it taps into much that he has repressed and buried. Likewise Evan is left to take the lead in a way he has not had to before, finding allies and making plans without Seth’s expertise all while reconnecting with people he assumed he would be distant from forever. Though parted for a significant portion of the story, the connection between the two MC’s is strong and I found myself so very invested in how this particular challenge would be overcome and how Seth and Evan would come out on top. The action was, as usual, fast paced and adrenaline inducing in places and the story moved at the best kind of pace.
For folks who are new to Morgan Brice and/or to this series, you will absolutely want to check this out especially if paranormal is your jam! I love this series, and not only because it reminds me so much of TV’s favourite monster-hunting brothers, and can’t wait for the next book! I was delighted to receive an ARC via GRR and give this 5 paranormal stars!
I’m a huge fan of this author, and Seth and Evan’s new book has loads of action and angst. I loved the family and found family feel of this story, and the love between Seth and Evan.
I liked how the witch disciples are starting to figure out that their days are numbered and are being proactive in trying to take Evan and Seth out first. This trap was an emotional one and exactly the thing to ensnare Seth, given his past. I liked the consequences that came with it, and I suspect it’s not something he’s going to put behind him anytime soon.
This story shows not only how far Evan has come in his abilities as a hunter, but the depth of his and Seth’s relationship. I loved the part Parker played in the story and I hope we see more of him, not only in future Witchbane books, but perhaps in other series within this universe.
I loved Joe Mack and his friends in this story, and now need to read that series too. One of the things I love about this author’s books is how they all take place in the same universe. The Supernatural Secret Service is a very cool idea.
I liked that Seth and Evan don’t win this battle easily, something that adds to the realism of the seriousness of their foe, and that the person they are trying to save isn’t exactly on their side. Nice twist! One of the other things I like about Witchbane is that Seth and Evan don’t have abilities like many of their friends and have had to learn magic by rote, and rely on other skills.
I’m already looking forward to reading what’s next in this series.
The Devil You Know is another smart page-turner by the prolific writer of brilliantly written paranormal/supernatural novels. Morgan Brice (pen name for Gail Z. Martin...lots of awesome books) has five series going at this time. Most of them are books with two protagonists who have met serendipitously and attempt to solve whatever bizarre yet intriguing supernatural mystery is at hand.
This is book 6 of the Witchbane series. As with the others you do not have to have read the earlier novels, because Ms. Brice always gives you a quick catch-up. That said, the story is richer and perhaps more meaningful if you do read the previous books. They account for where the witch-fighting duo (only the baddies and most certainly not the Wiccans or good witches) are today. Lots of good stuff. Also, as with any good Brice book there is a lot of non-gratuitous steam.
I must say that of all Ms. Brice's books in this series, this is absolutely the most heartrending to date. As I have noted I can always tell when a book is going to be a great read when I involuntarily succumb to tears. Quite a few. But not to fret...it is a great read and is also full of joy and some fun warm-and-fuzzy surprises. Thankfully as always a very satisfying happily-ever-after ending.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review. However, I also purchased a copy...just cuz I think it's the right thing to do :-).
The Devil You Know" by Morgan Brice is part of the "Witchbane" series, in which Seth Tanner and his partner Evan Malone try to disrupt a coven of witches first. But this time Gremory is forewarned and goes to great lengths to kill the two hunters when they arrive in a new location. It doesn't take long for Seth and Evan to get separated in their hunt. This was interesting that they are both separated, as I expected the two to hunt together. Still, I found it rewarding because the focus was different. The story is exciting and I found myself rooting for Evan and the longer Seth was missing, the more excited I became to see if he could be found in time. I really liked Evan's brother, who the reader got to know in this book and I hope to see him again soon. For me, this was the first book in the series and I think enough background information was provided that I was able to understand the story well. I found their adventure very entertaining and I will probably start the series from the beginning.
The audiobook was narrated by Kale Williams and he does a brilliant job of reading, as always. I like his pleasant voice, his appropriate pacing and the different voices he uses to bring the story to life.
I love this series. I love that even though our boys shy away from asking for help, they do take it where/when it's needed. So, Seth & Evan head to Cleveland, Ohio (where I grew up & still live in the suburbs of) on the trail of the fifth witch. While investigating where Osborn might be at, Seth is taken. I don't want to give away any spoilers here, but that was really well written & even though it wasn't real, I loved it. We also get a little more of Evan's background & what his family was like. I'm happy to see that his younger brother Parker joins them & they really get to reconnect. I also enjoyed the secondary characters that we meet along the way in these books. My biggest question is, what happens in the end? When the last disciple has been destroyed, does that mean that Gremory is released & is stronger than ever because he has taken the powers of his disciples? I can't wait to find out but then again, I don't want to know yet because that would mean the end has arrived. This really is not meant to be read as a stand-a-lone, so I encourage you to pick up the first book & get started today :)
I received a copy of this book from the Author, and this is my honest opinion.
A vivid story world and an action-packed story, you may think the plotline might suffer as they often do when they are full of action. Well, you would be So WRONG.
Morgan Brice has created a story world that is vivid in your imagination and full of emotions, especially fear and suspense. You might find yourself looking over your shoulder to make sure there are no bad guys behind you.
The story itself covers a range of issues, from estrange families to learning to trust and found family. Oh, and don’t forget the hot sex too, Which Morgan blends into the storyline perfectly. And the main plotline continues seth and Evans quest that has taken them across America in search Witches from a rogue Coven that are killing humans every twelve years to allow them to continue living. The Chase is exciting and nailbiting.
The characters pop off the pages and into your mind, you can’t help rooting for them. Even the supporting characters are fully fledged and bring substance to the story.
The only small issue I had reading this book is the dream Seth has kind of three me a loop. But I think If I had read the previous books, this would not have happened.
This is a strong sixth book in the series and reading it has defiantly made me want to start the whole series from book 1.
The Devil You Know is the sixth book in Morgan Brice’s Witchbane series and I found this an engaging installment. The series follows Seth and Evan as they try to stop a group of witch disciples who have been conducting a ritual murder every year for centuries. Each book follows a different adventure as the men try to intervene and stop the latest murder. As the series has grown, things have evolved a little in terms of the world building lore, but this is definitely a series with an overarching plot that carries through the books. Brice does a great job catching the reader up here on the foundation of the series and some key things that have happened thus far, so I think if you are really eager to start here, you probably could. But I’d suggest at least reading Witchbane first, as while the middle stories can mostly stand alone, getting that first book in would really help set up the series and Evan and Seth’s relationship.
Seth and Evan continue their work to stop the witch disciples, but the work is harder now. The next witch disciple knows they are coming and he plans on stopping them. It starts when Seth disappears and is trapped in a dream which gives him what he would love to have. Evan is left alone and determined to save him, but he cannot do it alone. His friends give him a local contact who gives him the help he needs. Even is further helped by the arrival of his brother, Parker. Parker has some ideas to help but Evan is not sure he can be trusted.
These books are getting better and better. Seth and Evan have a love that bonds them together. Both men will do anything to keep the other save. They will need that bond if they are to survive the latest encounter with this witch disciple. Evan has grown and matured into his role as a hunter, but at the same time knows when he needs help. Pick up this latest book and be prepared to burn the midnight oil. You will not want to put it down. The action starts from the beginning and never stops. These books are worthy of my keeper shelf.
The Witchbane series is fantastic, and The Devil You Know is a great addition. Evan is forced to do more without Seth this time around, due to circumstances beyond their control, and we see how much he's grown as a hunter. He is also reunited with his younger brother Parker, which is wonderful to see. Getting rid of Gremory's witch disciples is more than just a two-man job, especially now that Seth and Evan can't sneak up on them, so I'm glad their support group is growing. They make new supernatural friends here who have impressive skills and are ready and willing to help them in their latest battle. Seth experiences something here that makes me cry. His love for his family is still so powerful, and his grief is real and heartbreaking. If ghosts are ever added to the awesome team assisting him and Evan, I know who I want to see join the team. Seth and Evan are strong, determined, and still so much in love. Theirs is a romance that continues to grow as they battle evil. I am here for every minute, and I highly recommend this series and this book with all my heart.
This series is a journey you’ll definitely want to start at the beginning, so if you haven’t read the previous books, start there! It’s definitely worth it, and this book offers another window into Seth and Evan’s continuing efforts to deal with some really bad things (intentionally vague here, but trust me…really bad). Many of the things I love about this series are here in this book in spades— the blend of action, suspense, horror, the paranormal, and romance; the supporting characters who give depth and life to the universe; and the bond between the protagonists, which gains strength with each new obstacle they weather. Would I have liked a bit more time for the romance/relationship in this installment? Yes, but there’s plenty happening on the page already, and I did like the focus here on family bonds and advancing, both emotionally and pragmatically, the overarching plot trajectory for the series. Well worth a read.
*I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Absolutely marvelous. Oh? You need more of a review than that? Okay! I just finished this book and I loved it as I have the whole series which stands at six books right now. Seth and Evan are still chasing magical murderers but in this part of the whole story they gain some allies. People from past parts of the story appear but I can’t tell you much without giving things away. The characters are fun to follow but what really shines in this book and the series is the world building and the plots. Earth but with magic, vampires, action, werewolves, mm romance, murder for power and a whole lot more all combined to make a story that I want to read as soon as a new book comes out. If you enjoy mm urban fantasy series then I can’t recommend this book highly enough but please read the series from the beginning so you get the most out of this story.
I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review
I’m a huge Morgan Brice fan and I’ve enjoyed the Witchbane books from the beginning. I liked this one a lot, although parts were painful. Seth and Evan are separated for much of the book, and it hurt my heart – where Seth went. Where we’d all like to go, I suppose, at least for a little while. Fortunately, his love for Evan prevailed and he was able to come home – to his real home.
I also liked the addition of Parker. I didn’t know much about Evan’s family and I liked how Parker just kind of fit into the story. Another sidekick – and a helpful one to boot.
The book has just the right amount of suspense plus some old characters I love and a few new ones as well. Overall, the book hit just the right note with me at just the right time.
Have to say how much I love Kale Williams. His narrations are always great and he does a fantastic job in this series.
