I should have stopped after the fourth

This series was great and it got better with each passing book, until this one. After so far in it started to feel rushed. It was a quick uneventful read. I was very disappointed. I really enjoyed the series up until this book. I could have ended the series after the fourth. It pretty much had a complete ending for the series but I chose to read on ,that was a mistake. It ruined it for me.

Lazy way to wrap it up.

When the author is bored with their own material it's time to stop. This last book was completely superfluous. Should have stopped at the fourth and consolidated them into one book.

The worst of the Five books. Not scary, the plot becomes stupid and the story telling is horrible. “Little did I know” that this book would suck any good out of the four previous books.
And the stupid jokes were tedious.

Ok finish

Kind of anticlimactic actually. This was my least favorite of the series. It really never explained the wraiths or where they came from. I was really ready for this series to end on book 4.

Not scary, no suspense, boring.

First couple books were ok but it became a bore. Something happens, they get stuck in a tight spot, bing bang they are saved. The never ending use of “little did I know” or “later I found out how wrong I was”. The hero was no hero. Just false unrealistic dumb luck. The end of the last book was just dumb. Here comes the monster! Then boom, all fixed world saved.
The constant flipping off and stupid jokes and fifth grade banter was irritating.
Any-whoo..too late for me but anyone else, Do not waste your time reading any of these books.

My least favourite of the series it was for the first half, book clubs and schedules, there were parts the seemed unnecessary to the story as a whole. There was a confrontation with Ramsey's ex wife, where Grady told her Ramsey was a good guy and she should forgive him because he saved them. Um Grady? This woman was married to the man for over a decade and he went on a supply run and slept with some young woman, then didn't admit to it till the young woman showed up and he had to confess. Ramsey saving Grady has nothing to do with his marriage to a woman he said was amazing and his best friend. How arrogant to think well he saved me so he must be a good husband.
Ugh!!!!!
Also the last quarter of the book then seemed to be in a race with it self to finish.

An awesome conclusion to an awesome series!

I am a huge fan of Stephen King and a big fan of apocalyptic books, most of which have zombies. This series was refreshing, (can you say that about an apocalypse book?) in the fact that the enemy was a new type of horror and a dangerous one at that. Make sue you read the series from book 1 or some stuff will not make sense and you don't want to miss out on a great series after all!

This particular book was so fast paced that at times I caught myself holding my breath in fear!

I absolutely love the style of Mr. Flint's writing coming from Grady's point of view. I really felt like these were my friends too. The characters are written so richly that they feel real and you can't help but root for them. Stone and Mia are hilarious which provides some great comedy relief. I will really miss this wild bunch but all great things must come to an end.

Kudos to the editor as well. The book read very smoothly.

I'm so looking forward to future books by this author as you've become my 2nd favorite one!

Enjoy!

The End of the Story

I wasn't too sure that this story would ever explain things but to my surprise it actually does. And the end was satisfying too. Yet a lot of this one was drama but the action sure comes in at the end.

Bummer. Not a very good stand-alone book, it was like a really long and unnecessary epilogue. Books 1-4 really felt like one story in the throes of apocalyptic chaos. This book 5, included a bunch of new characters to remember in a post-apocalyptic scenario that really goes nowhere.

The group has made it to the City, and we follow their adjustment into this new "normal" with new people to get along with and getting comfortable in a whole new way of life. A complete departure from the feeling of its predecessors, it is comprised mostly of this new drama, and perhaps 10% horror action.

1-4 should be one book, and really, just skip this one. I was so bored as most of it was learning about this new dynamic, completely removed from the outside world and its horrors. If I wanted to read 5 pages about a Backgammon game, I would read King.

So this was a very good story, ruined by an anti-climatic finish. I really enjoyed the characters and the plot lines.
What bothered me most was that the writer never actually explained WHY the snow came in July and WHERE the creatures actually came from.

Probably my last book read by Mr. Maxwell.

It's odd to finish a series and have the least amount to say about the final book.

Decent action in the opening which has become a pattern for the entire saga. They all seem to open with a well written action section or event filled with genuine suspense and then taper off.

The finale is much the same. Strong action, cringey dialogue and then it's the end.

I don't have much to say overall but it can't be denied that I have burned through these 5 books in less than a week, so they are doing something right. I was entertained.

3 stars.

The first book is the best for sure. The rest are middling at worst, cheesy and entertaining at best.

I get the impression that this last book in the series was actually the ending of the fourth book, and was just divided out to make a separate novel. It is very short. The story is rushed to a conclusion and the explanation is no explanation at all. Instead, we are told that bad human behavior brought the winter and wraiths out as punishment, but we don't know what they are, where they came from or really anything substantive about them. Winter ends, the weather returns slowly to normal. There are fewer people: does this experience mean that we will be kinder to each other and the environment? Somehow, I doubt it. This could have been made more meaningful by extending the betrayal by Credence, a woman who shows up from the snow. We could have had more time with the warnings about a final battle. The final battle was rushed, poorly described from a logistical point of view and it ended up being bloody, but it did not make sense. Why is Grady such a weenie? Why don't they all take more precautions? Behavior is inconsistent and often downright stupid to move the plot forward. Well, I finished the series because that is the way I am. But it was a let down.

With novella 5, the series came to an end and in a direction not foreshadowed by the preceding books. I don't want to create spoilers, but given the dynamics at the end of book 4 - Grady getting into the bad books of the mystery man who is the vice president of the community - I had anticipated rather more in-community rivalry, hostility and intra group conflict. Instead, things come to a head through the intrusion of an outside force which hooks up with someone on the inside. I did feel it was rather rushed in order to wrap things up in this instalment.

There were some new secondary characters in the community who were sketched sympathetically, though unfortunately several of them don't survive to the end of the series. The name for the 'big bad' (the Matron) was a bit risible. On the plus side there was a resolution to the backstory, as I picked up on a hint that the wraiths came from another dimension and had created the arctic conditions. I didn't see how birds could possibly have survived, but it was a sweet touch all the same. So I found the story a mixed bag, but at least some of the original group survived and there is hope at the end. Three stars overall.

A satisfying ending to the series which I don’t take lightly!
Although none have quite been as good as book 3, all have been enjoyable.
For the series as a whole, I loved the wraiths and the snow and the ever-looming sense of ‘something terrible is going to happen’. I also loved the storytelling style of Grady recounting the events, rather than just a third of first person story in real time.
The foreshadowing (if it’s still called that when retelling a story, but you know what I mean) where Grady may say something like ‘we felt safe but we should have known better’. So you know something’s about to go terribly wrong but you don’t know what so your mind tries to think of who might die or what might happen and it puts you in suspense!
This book in particular had some great moments but not enough to take the top spot of the series. I liked the final battle and the story behind it and I don’t know where I thought the story was going to go, but it sure wasn’t that! It was cool but it did feel kind of out of the blue. For a 5 book series, I think there could have been more hints that something like that was happening (trying to avoid spoilers). But I digress, it was good nonetheless.

Grady and the group find themselves adjusting to life within the City’s walls, but danger is never far away. New allies and enemies emerge, forcing them to question who they can trust. As tensions rise, it’s clear the fight for survival is far from over.
Like the previous installments, there's a lot given to the bleak atmosphere, tension, dread and tension.
The relationship building between our group continues to be strong and has carried on into growing with the fellow survivors of the city.
The story builds towards a thrilling conclusion which ends up decent however it was a little anticlimactic, not to the post of making me angry. There are several questions left unanswered, but I think to have answer then might have taken away from the story. The mystery is sometimes better unanswered.
Again a really easy read, extremely atmospheric with lots of tension.
Overall a really enjoyable series of books too so would definitely recommend to horror fans.

Great story; horrible grammar!

I truly enjoyed the series. I feel like I got to know the characters and really like them. Grady, Stone, Ell and the others demonstrate what we humans are capable of when life gets tough. The reason have gave the series four stars instead of five was quite simply the grammar. The author used the word "I" instead of "me" every single time: no exaggeration. So distracting for me. I just kept thinking I should send him a book on proper grammar so he would understand that "I," and " me" are NOT interchangeable . I am a former English teacher, so, or course, I cringed every time the mistake popped up. However, I carried on and was glad I did because I enjoyed reading a rather different type of apocalypse story. I definitely recommend this series to any fan of apocalyptic stories. It's a refreshing change from the overused template.

And so I come to (as far as I can tell) the end of the series.

WARNING CONTAINS SPOILERS!

This book brought everything that began in the beginning and continued through the entire series into sharp focus. Though I had already pegged the villain and villainess, the way they were defeated was a surprise. While not everyone I liked survived the series, each death (as I wrote in another book in the series review) had a purpose. The author didn't just kill characters off for plain shock value!

Yes, 4 (6 if you count the baby and the dog) of the beginning characters live to see another day.

I don't believe I have ever read 5 books so fast and still been able to pay attention to details as I did this series! To say it held my interest would be an understatement.

Let me start off by saying that I absolutely love this series. Post-apocalyptic fiction with monsters that aren't zombies? I'm IN! Maxwell is fantastic with creepy atmosphere and unique creatures, fully developed characters and dynamic interactions.

My only issue with The Feeding is that it felt rushed. Maxwell is at the end of the series, the end of civilization as the characters know it, the location of mankind's last stand, and he needed to find an "out". And I feel like he hurried through it. But if I'm being entirely honest, the rest of the series completely made up for it, and I understand that he had painted himself into a corner, so to speak, and didn't have many other options left than the avenue he took.

Still...absolutely pick it up!

This last book in the series was very slow, since they started living an approximately normal life in the City of Light. It's only close to the end where the suspense returned and the real action happened, and then it was a lot to quick. That is the section that should have taken most of the space in the book, but it took up just a couple of pages. At least we have an explanation for why and how everything happened right at the end, and a return to a life without snow and wraiths. Not a brilliant series by any means, but it was enjoyable enough and I'm glad I read it.

I find it crazy that so many people thought this was the worst of the series. Aside from the ending feeling a bit rushed, it was pretty perfect to me.
I didn’t get to connect with most of the characters within the community, but they were only in one out of the five short books so I’m not upset. I loved following the journey of the OG MC’s and the beautiful bond they share over such a traumatic event. I thought the way the wraiths were presented towards the end of the book made sense. They evolved so quickly without truly knowing what they were up against.

I was blown away by this series. I started in a whim 4 days ago and couldn't stop listening. I was just looking for a dystopian distraction that I could escape into. This book series had it all. Action, horror, paranormal, romance, plot twists and building, character development. I feel like the author pulled every emotion possible out of me throughout this series. I never expected to feel so much from a dystopian horror series, but I did. If horror isn't your thing, there isn't a ton of gore, it's definitely a nice series to use to dip your toe into either horror or dystopian genres.

Great conclusion to this series! I enjoyed it immensely. Really couldn’t put it down. The end felt like it happened very quickly. I hope someday we can get a retelling of the city’s final battle from stone or mias point of view, so we can see the parts that Grady missed being on the scav run. And maybe a story about Monica’s life in the future and how the world changes? It’s just such an interesting world that I want MORE!

I get why some readers are frustrated by the length of his books, but the plot kept me going. Bought all five books in the series in one day and read them all within two days. So i hope the writer considers readers are invested in his books, so he doesn’t take too long to put out the next book in the series, while also writing more than 300 pages. 200-250 pages just doesn’t cut it. Gave it 5 stars because i loved all the books in the series.

I loved this series!!

I'm going to miss these characters! They have become so real for me. I flew through every one of the books in this series. Such excitement and horror. I admit I had to skim some of the more gruesome descriptions because I was already so horrified. What a fantastic series this has been! Thanks so much to the author, Flint Maxwell for keeping me on the edge of my chair!!

the author needs to hire a better editor who will catch where he is contradicting himself (the temperature being "considerably higher but not by much") or using the wrong word (the "flesh" sat on the bone with no meat in between . meaning the skin, i presume) and also he needs to publish these 5 as one single book because that's what they really are. abrupt finish, pacing was off in all five parts really. Also instalove should be punishable by law (this is from part 1 on)
