Break Writer's Block Now!

Rate this book
Break it instantly. Break it forever.

This short, clear, direct book will do that for you.

Just as it's done for a great many writers already, from a Pulitzer Prize winner to a novelist with multiple books on The New York Times bestseller list. From hopeful beginners to fulltime professionals. From short-story writers, playwrights and screen-writers to biographers, journalists, and graduate students. From attorneys to architects, from corporate writers to medical doctors.

In short, for people at every level of experience and ability and from nearly every walk of life.

This is the only system for breaking writer's block ever developed by a lifelong professional writer--and the only one ever proven and guaranteed to work.

This book will break writer's block for you now, it will break it for you tomorrow, it will break it for you forever.

Here is what a few writers have to say about

"Jerry Mundis is the drug of choice for writer's block. If you want to get off your ass and onto the page, he can make it happen."
-- Lawrence Block, bestselling mystery and crime novelist, celebrated Grand Master Award winner from the Mystery Writers of America,

"Like many of Jerry's published clients, I'd prefer to remain anonymous, but my conscience won't let me. Jerry is too good, and writer's block is too terrible to endure needlessly. Whether you're published or not, if you have writer's block, can't seem to get started, keep going, or finish, then working with Jerry's system could very well be the best single investment you could ever make in your career."
-- Judith McNaught, author of numerous New York Times bestsellers.

"Jerry, the block I had when I came to see you eighteen months ago is definitely gone. My novel is almost done. I am grateful to you for giving me the tools that I needed. Thank you again. You are a great teacher, with a gift of clarity and of gentleness and insight."
-- Judy Collins, Grammy Award winner, singer, songwriter, author.

"I was able to adapt Jerry's techniques to my life and personality so that these practical foolproof methods are now intrinsic to my writing routine. I never worry about being blocked anymore.”
-- Victoria Moran, author of Living a Charmed Life, Shelter for the Spirit & other books.

"Jerry Mundis has thought deeply about what happens when you sit down to write, and what doesn't happen when you don't. If you do what Jerry says--which is easy--you'll finish whatever you want to finish. And you'll stop hating yourself."
-- Charles M. Young, contributor to Rolling Stone, Playboy, The Atlantic & other magazines.

"I often refer to Jerry as my writing therapist."
-- Rick Fields, author of Chop Wood, Carry Water; How the Swans Came to the Lake & other books.

"What I never expected was how, after months of high anxiety whenever I passed by the computer, I would be so quickly and completely released. In a matter of hours, Jerry freed me to resume my work. I'm sure he can do it for almost anyone at anytime. I continue to apply his techniques on a daily basis."
-- Janet Capron, graduate student, Columbia University

"My problem with writer's block was so severe that I had come to believe I would have to leave academia because of it. But Jerry demystified both the writing process and my struggle with it, and provided me with a clear path I could follow to achieve my goals. He literally changed my life."
-- Ellen Hyman-Browne, J.D., LL.M., Associate Professor of Law, CUNY Law School at Queens.

"Very simply, I would not be a writer today without Jerry Mundis."
-- Paul Wisenthal, contributor to The New York Times, USA Today, Parade, Newsday & other publications.

I read this book as it is intended to be read: in one sitting. Aside from the "Introduction," I read the rest of the book's 88 pages in one block of time. The book takes the reader through simple exercises designed to forever demolish writer's block. Though that has not been much of a problem for me, I found much of use in this book—the positive affirmations, the long- and short-term goals, the sacrosanct writing schedule, the short-time method, and the debunking of killer myths: perfectionism, fear, and the baggage train. The book is not about how to be a better writer. It is about how to get writing. I recommend this book to anyone who writes or wants to write.

If you are writing a story and can't figure out where to go, or you never seem to have the time to write, or you just can't seem to make yourself sit down and write, I truly believe this book will help you.

Jerrold Mundis explains the pyschological reasons for writer's block, as well what can be done about them. With a few short exercises that require only a few minutes he helps conquer the fear of sitting down to write.

In short order, his premise is this: there is no such thing as writer's block. Nothing is physically keeping you from putting words on paper, so you probably have some mental blocks. He goes through a short list of them, and it felt good to have someone acknowledge these pitfalls and explain why no one should worry about them. The exercises and scheduling recommendations were extremely helpful, and I've already noticed improvements in my writing just from the first week.

I don't want to go into everything in this review. The book is short enough that it can be read in a couple of hours. Because of the exercises and Mundis' direct way of dealing with problems, this book needs to be experienced rather than just summarized in a review.

I was skeptical about the helpfulness of this book prior to reading it. I followed the author's instructions (there are specific instructions regarding how to read the book and do the exercises); the entire time one devotes to the book in following the instructions is about 2 hours. Happy to say it seems to have worked now that it's been about 7 days since I read it and did the exercises. One proviso: it doesn't claim to make you a better writer or even a good writer; however that is a project I think takes years if it ever works at all.

I had this book on my radar for a long time, but never got around to doing it ("doing" rather than "reading" because it's in a self-administered workshop format). Today, looking for something to read about writing on a rainy holiday weekend, I was browsing through the books I've accumulated on my Kindle, and there it was.

I did it exactly as he said (except for not putting it aside after the introduction) -- relaxation exercises, breathing breaks, and all. I think that made a big difference. I don't think that any self-help book has any really new ideas. It's just how they are presented and whether they hit a chord with you at that exact moment.

A lot of the ideas here did, and I plan to put several of them into practice. Maybe I will update this after a few months to see if I am still sticking with it and, if so, how it is working out.

A sad note: After I finished the book, I tried to take a look at the author's website (the URL was in the book) but there was nothing there. I looked at his Twitter account -- I sometimes like to follow authors after I read their books -- and it hadn't been updated in over a year. I eventually found that he died last spring of Covid.

Really useful tips and advice. Includes how to set up your writing area, how to get your butt in the chair, and how to think about your writing. Good reference book.

A lot of good advice on dealing with stress. I do not necessarily agree with all his conclusions, but most appears to be very good.

two points I like best about this book are:
1-having a goal of perfection is a killer. I hear in other places, give yourself permission to suck. This goes especially for the first draft.
2-Do not get mired in the baggage train. Excuses and justifications will come, don't allow them to stop you.

A book well worth reading, especially of you are dealing with stress.

Wow. A rich and wonderful book with a great philosophy, and great practical techniques. I have already seen results from using some of the techniques involved. I feel so happy to have found this book and feel confident that I'll have no issues with writer's block in the future, and if I do, I will have foolproof techniques to break it.

A note: I followed all of the recommendations of reading the book to a "T," i.e. I read it in one sitting (aside from the introduction), did all of the listed thinking/writing exercises, relaxed and stretched when it told me to, etc.

From it's outset, this book says it is meant to be read in a single afternoon. I think that is time well spent for a writer looking to deal with writer's block or just get back into the habit of writing. While seasoned writers may recognize a number of the techniques in the book, there are enough ideas that most readers should find something of worth in there.

This book was not bad, by any means, but it seems like aside from the last technique (The Atom Bomb) it's all advice I'd read before.

For $3.99 on my Kindle, it was worth it and if you are blocked in your writing you should check it out.

While I don't share all viewpoints with the author, a concise and extremely helpful guide that leaves you no excuses not to write. Great psychological stuff understandably explained.
