Safely ensconced with a master magician who is teaching her wizardry, Princess Athaya realizes she must return to Caithe, from which she has recently escaped, to teach its citizens how to control the evil magic that is controlling them
Positives: ➕️ The narration of the first two chapters remind you of what happened at the end of the first book. ➕️ The narrative is also lyrical in description, which is more pleasant to read than matter-of-fact descriptions. ➕️ Sometimes, when you read an expected, coming event, the events are given to the reader as an overview rather than a detailed account as it's happening. Some readers might not like this, but I don't mind it and still enjoy it. Not everything needs to be Brandon Sanderson level of pedantic storytelling. Brevity can still be enjoyable reading. ➕️ Tackles social problems of an oppressed class of people turning to drug addiction as a form of coping. ➕️ Clean romance. ➕️ Great character development for Athaya. Much more mature than in the prequel.
Negatives: ➖️ After a certain betrayal, there's no explanation why the traitor didn't betray everyone else. What stopped them from going all the way with their betrayal?
