The Dancing Floor

Heather Tradescant and her father had always hoped to journey to England on a pilgrimage to the great gardens of history. Now that her father is dead, Heather is determined to fulfill his dream. Unfortunately, her request to see the fabled 17th-century garden at Troytan House is denied by the owner. Heather infiltrates the manor and senses a strange miasma of malevolence lurking -- is it only stories of long-vanished witchcraft that haunt Troytan House, or is there a more modern evil nearer at hand that is far more dangerous?

Other Worlds

The smoky room glows with a mix of cigars, brandy and genius. Those present -- Harry Houdini, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Dr. Nandor Fodor, and a writer who rivals them all with her sleuthing talent -- are about to put their minds to a pair of gripping stories of families beset by poltergeistly pranks and bewitched by inexplicable horrors. Were these villains phantom spirits or evildoers of flesh and blood? Each expert has a theory. Which of them is correct?

Two books in one by Elizabeth Peters (writing as Barbara Michaels) and very skillfully narrated by Barbara Rosenblat. The first story (The Dancing Floor) was a murder mystery set in England. While somewhat predictable and not real exciting it did hold our interest while driving simply because of Ms. Rosenblat very skillful reading. The second story "Other Worlds" was much better and consisted of two eerie tales of ghosts and strange happenings. The writing of the stories was rich with the vocabulary of the times and was mesmerizing to listen to as Ms. Rosenblat varied her voice to represent each character. As each story concludes a smoke filled room filled with magicians and detectives (Sir Conan Doyle/Houdini etc) provide their insight using logic and reason to explain what truly caused the unearthly happenings. Very reminiscent of listening to ghost stories on a wet, dreary and dark day. Just plain fun!
