Gothic Rage Undone: English Monks in the Age of Enlightenment

Rate this book
This book, largely based on a doctoral thesis presented in 1984, sits on the back of two earlier influential works, David Lunn's "The English Benedictines 1540-1688" (London 1980) and John Bossy's "The English Catholic Community 1570-1850" (London 1975). To the first it is a continuation, to the second partly an answer and reassessment. These two works also necessarily help to define the book's readership. --- Foreword; Introduction; 1. The English Benedictine Congregation and the English Mission; 2. The Monasteries; 3. The Mission; 4. The Spirituality of the English Benedictines; 5. Monks and Learning; 6. Monks and Education; 7.
