I'm not sure that most Americans realize that Spain was an ally of the United States during the Revolutionary War. Here is the story of Don Francisco Saavedra de Sangronis who in June of 1780 received instructions and orders directed to the president of the Junta de Generales established in Cuba and to the Treasury of Havana. The Junta was commanded to respect Saavedra's instructions as if they came from the King himself; the Treasury was instructed to provide the Royal Commissioner with any funds he might request. So began the adventure in which Saavedra de Sangronis mightily contributed to the Spanish conquest of Penscola and to the British defeat at Yorktown.
