The Burden Of Freedom explains that too many people use past oppression to remain mired in hatred and irresponsibility today. The spirit of oppression has specific telltale effects on individuals, communities, and nations. These are identified by Myles Munroe as a hatred for work, laziness, fear, low self-esteem, selfishness, lack of creativity, low initiative, and distrust of those in authority. To break free from these self-replicating cycles of oppression there must be a mental transformation. Paradoxically, freedom requires the need to impose control on self, require more responsibility than slavery, and the decision to accept a destiny of freedom, recognizing the process and discipline that personal and political freedom require. Simply put, The Burden Of Freedom should be available to every citizen and on the shelves of every high-school, college, and community library in the country.
As always, Dr. Munroe's book is well researched, with integration of bible verses, and information from the media and history. His interpretation of the bible, history and current affairs is unconventional and he is unapologetic about his views. He takes the readers through the bible verses step by step, to corroborate his statements.
Speaking from the South African context, many people have realized that what they thought was the dawn of freedom back in 1994 when the first democratic elections were held following the fall of apartheid, wasn't actually what it was cut out to be. Retention of the previous status quo where resources are still in the hands of the minority groups and corrupt government officials are vehemently stated as obstacles to freedom. Nonetheless Myles Munroe hasn't shied away from the root of the problem, and no one was spared i.e oppressor and oppressed.
His definition of freedom, "the unrestricted , uninhibited access to pursue the specific area of one's gifts or talents, which is defined as one's domain", will always resonate within me. He states that freedom is all about responsibility and discipline, which should be Applied in all areas of our lives, and enable us to work to the best of our abilities. Contrary to the expectations of many, Dr. Munroe warns that wealth, materialism, prosperity and credible reputation are by-products of true freedom, not freedom itself.
Even from the grave Mr. Munroe gives relevant and practical instruction for living ones faith in the 21st Century. He unashamedly takes the gloves off and punches religious, political, community and personal mediocrity in the face and demands no nonsense proactive responsibility on the part of the reader. If you do not want to accept the responsibility of living your destiny and being an agent for change, do not read this book.
“There is truly no greater burden than freedom, no heavier load than liberty.”
The Burden of Freedom is a fantastic book! It also happens to be my first introduction to literature written by Dr. Munroe. Freedom is something that every individual wants, but we are only truly free under God, according to Dr. Munroe. The Burden of Freedom talks a lot about oppression and how it affects an individual and a nation. Dr. Munroe draws upon his personal experiences and his home country (The Bahamas). Dr. Munroe talks about shaking off your shackles of oppression and the journey to freedom. He illustrates the different cycles of oppression we can trap ourselves in and the mindsets that get us stuck in the 'wilderness.' How to change your mindset is shown throughout The Burden of Freedom. The Burden of Freedom is a wonderful book. I read this in a great time in my life when I needed to hear some of these things. I would reread this book in the future to remind myself of some of these helpful things laid out in the book. I think The Burden of Freedom is helpful for those who grew up in the Caribbean. You can see how we are still oppressing ourselves even though we as a nation are independent.
The most fantastic book I’ve EVER read! Extraordinary revelation from start to finish. What a truly life-changing book. You won’t find this teaching anywhere else on the planet. It spoke to me and my situation and why I’ve been in the wilderness, and how to get out of it. It is so powerful it can only have been written by God Himself through Myles Munroe. PLEASE read this book!!!
This a must read for all who cry out wondering why they are not satisfied in their jobs or careers. Dr. Munroe explains what freedom is and what it is not. He shows how important it is to use your talent for personal fulfillment to be realized. I love how he relates the exodus experience to our need for freedom.
There is no better book that outlines God's purpose for our lives and what we must do to live to that potential. Read this book if you are ready to step into the calling that's been placed into you by your Creator.
One of Myles’ best works, imo. A must read for every person (CEOs, leaders, gov officials, etc) who wants to exercise influence in a positive and Godly way!
After having listened to Munroe speak, I expected a lot from this book. There were however, some generalisations that didn't quite pass. With resources available for Munroe, he would have bought editing services to iron out open errors including biblical quotations and mixing of personalities. At one point, I almost thought that it wasn't Munroe writing.
Again, the book was more on 'stewardship' more than it was about "The Burden of Freedom". But, like many other books, there didn't lack something to take home. The books needs an active consumer not a passive one.
