The biological history of species change seems to indicate that evolution occurs, not in gradual change over eons, but in sudden, violent change in a short period of time. What exactly causes these changes is not known, but they seem to appear at times of great environmental stress. -- In the near future, after a great pandemic wipes out much of the earth's human population, a further cataclysm an ice age begins.
Under the stress of this vast environmental change, new species of animals and plants begin to appear, almost overnight. Among these new species is a new type of human, small of stature, but possessing uncanny intelligence and mental abilities far beyond those of ordinary people.
Are these new creatures our bright future, or our bitterest enemies?
This is a well written, thoroughly researched and immensely entertaining read that takes a look at what the future of mankind may be and how civilsations deals with it (or not as the case may be). Weber combines global climate change and a shift into a new Ice Age with changes in the understanding of evolution and how this can be sudden as well as slow with the various responses from differen aspects of society as the world and our place in it changes. Add in a new species stemming from Homo sapiens and you have a story that is intriguing, challenging and an epic read that shows the good, the bad and the ugly of modern man and how we are still very much in the hands of the natural world (whether we like it or not). A superb read that really makes you think.
