Although there are no conventional heroes or heroics in this unusual novel of Canadians in World War II, Remember Me presents a compelling image not only of war and the wreck it makes of human lives but also of those individuals who, though sepising war for what it is, accept, however sorrowfully, their necessary involvement in it.
As I was reading this I wondered how it has not been republished in fifty or sixty years. Then I came across some scenes of unintentional racism which were part of the culture of the era. Despite this, Remember Me was a fascinating read that gives a very unique Canadian perspective during WW II. Knowing that it was written in secret during the war gives the novel greater authority as to the actual condition of war and I think also gives it a greater impact. This is one of the lost Canadian novels that will soon be forgotten in time.
