Euripides (Greek: Ευριπίδης) (ca. 480 BC–406 BC) was a tragedian of classical Athens. Along with Aeschylus and Sophocles, he is one of the three ancient Greek tragedians for whom any plays have survived in full. Some ancient scholars attributed ninety-five plays to him, but the Suda says it was ninety-two at most. Of these, eighteen or nineteen have survived more or less complete (Rhesus is suspect). There are many fragments (some substantial) of most of his other plays. More of his plays have survived intact than those of Aeschylus and Sophocles together, partly because his popularity grew as theirs declined—he became, in the Hellenistic Age, a cornerstone of ancient literary education, along with Homer, Demosthenes, and Menander.
Euripides is identified with theatrical innovations that have profoundly influenced drama down to modern times, especially in the representation of traditional, mythical heroes as ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. This new approach led him to pioneer developments that later writers adapted to comedy, some of which are characteristic of romance. He also became "the most tragic of poets", focusing on the inner lives and motives of his characters in a way previously unknown. He was "the creator of ... that cage which is the theatre of William Shakespeare's Othello, Jean Racine's Phèdre, of Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg," in which "imprisoned men and women destroy each other by the intensity of their loves and hates". But he was also the literary ancestor of comic dramatists as diverse as Menander and George Bernard Shaw.
His contemporaries associated him with Socrates as a leader of a decadent intellectualism. Both were frequently lampooned by comic poets such as Aristophanes. Socrates was eventually put on trial and executed as a corrupting influence. Ancient biographies hold that Euripides chose a voluntary exile in old age, dying in Macedonia, but recent scholarship casts doubt on these sources.

گاهی واقعاً نمی‌توانم تشخیص بدهم پس از جنگ تروا کدام زن بیش از همه درهم شکست.
آندروماکی که موهایش را گرفتند و کشان‌کشان به سوی کشتی‌ها بردند؛
هکوبی که به معنای واقعی کلمه شأن انسانی‌اش را از او گرفتند؛
کاساندرایی که بعد از همهٔ پیش‌گویی‌های نشنیده‌اش، سرانجام به خون نشست؛
و بی‌شمار زنان گمنام دیگر که نامی از آنان در هیچ صفحه‌ای نمانده است.
آندروماک اما می‌تواند نمونه بارزی از رنج و نجابت انسانی، وفاداری، اخلاقیات در ناممکن‌ترین شرایط باشد. در سراسر متن، خشمی فروخورده و پذیرشی آرام احساس می‌شد. آندروماک منفعل نیست، بلکه مقاومت می‌کند، اما مقاومت او شکل و شمایلی متفاوت دارد؛ مقاومت او از راه انسانیت است. وقتی مقابل تکبّر، حسادت کور و خشونت آشکار هِرمِیون قرار می‌گیرد، آرامشش نه نشانه‌ی شکست، بلکه قوتی است که از ویرانه‌های تروا با خود آورده.

Seneca’nın "Troialı Kadınlar" oyunun hemen sonrasında geçen Euripides’in "Andromakhe / Andromache" oyunu olay örgüsü ve akıcı kurgusuyla okuyucuya keyifli bir okuma sunan Euripides eserlerinden. Oğlu Astyanax’ı kurban etmesinin ardından Achilleus’un oğlu Neoptolemos tarafından köle alarak alınan ve oğlu Molossos’u doğuran Andromakhe’yi konu alan oyunda Andromakhe Menelaos’un kızı ve Neoptolemos’un karısı Hermione’nin kıskançlık oklarının hedefi oluyor. Kocasını elinden aldığını düşündüğü için Andromakhe’yi ve oğlunu ölümle tehdit eten Hermione’nin gözü öyle bir dönüyor ki Orestes’i Neoptolemos’ı öldürmesi için kışkırtıyor. Finalinde Achilleus’un annesi Thetis’in gelerek karakterleri kurtardığı “deus ex machine” finaliyle daha çok Neoptolemos’un tragedyasına dönen eser ne yazık ki yüksek notada bir final yapamıyor. Buna rağmen, Antik Yunan mitolojisine katkısı ve Euripides’in dili sebebiyle mutlaka okunması gereken oyunlardan biri.

Another beautiful play by the great Greek tragedian Euripides! The play is centered on the life of Andromache, years after the sacking of Troy, brutal death of her husband Hector and son, and her enslavement. It describes her miserable life as a slave and mistress to Achilles’ son Neoptolemus, and the threats she and her son face from his barren wife Hermione and her father Menelaus. The play somehow sheds light on the difference between Spartan and Trojan ways of life (in particular in the dialogue between Andromache and Hermione)! The play addresses a number of themes, such as the adverse consequences and misery war brings to people, the challenges and misfortunes life can bring upon individuals, the potential destructive impacts of morbid jealousy, loss of wealth, status, and authority, the importance of having children, the role of gods and their intervention in man’s life, blind selfishness, murder as a way for achieving personal goals, and prejudice and hatred (Spartan vs. Trojans). I loved the play so much, but, I loved in particular Thetis’ consolation and dialogue with her husband Peleus, as well as Peleus’ support to Andromache during her crises.

Andromache's story is tragic. But her high-spirited character makes it a tale of valiance quite unknown to the patriarchal rules of a sad world where women are prized away as spoils of war as per men's desire.
But even amidst a fate so awful, worse than the worst, comes Andromache, who does not falter or bow down before the atrocities so brought upon.

Euripides magically weaves this tale of jealousy and treachery, highlighting the terrible plight of women, and the tragic side of wars.

نمایشنامه‌ای کمتر دیده‌شده از اوریپید؛ داستان آندروماک، همسر هکتور تروایی که منلائوس پس از فتح تروا و مرگ هکتور او را به فرزند آشیل، نئوپتلموس، هدیه می‌کند. این دو با هم پسری دارند. هرمیون، دختر منلائوس و هلن بدنام، همسر دوم نئوپلتموس می‌شود. رقابتی میان این دو زن بر سر عشق و زندگی زناشویی و زاییدن وارث برپاست که با خون پایان می‌پذیرد.

سطح ترجمه از گزین‌گفته‌ای که گذاشتم قابل تشخیصه. اصلاً با انتظار ترجمه‌های ادبی و زیبایی افرادی مثل عبدالله کوثری نرید سمتش.

One of the refreshing things about Euripides is how he draws his women strong. Andromache is in a tricky place but she saves herself and her son with her feisty talk. If you’ve read the play you’ll know once she’s done this her part ends as the remainder of the play leads to a surprising conclusion, the play was never about Andromache’s fate but how a mortal’s fate is impossible to predict.

آندروماکِ اوریپید به لحاظ روایی قوی، از نظر صحنه‌ای متوسط و از جنبه‌ی جهان‌بینی خیلی شبیه رمان‌های بورژوایی قرن ۱۹ئه.
ترجمه خوب و کتاب خوندنی بود.

Jealousy Abounds

It was when I was reading Racine’s version of this play that made me realise that there were a bunch of Euripidean plays that I had yet to review. I’ve pretty much read all of them back in the deep dark distant pre-Goodreads days, but Euripides is one of those authors that I really can’t do justice in writing a review based off memory (or the Wikipedia entry), much in the same way that while I have read [book:Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), it would besmirch Gene Wilder’s name if I were to write a review without actually reading it again.

As it turns out, the Racine version and this version are two completely different beasts – well, sort of. For instance, there isn’t this insane love triangle. In fact, the whole idea of love really doesn’t seem to come into it, but I suspect that has a lot to do with the cultural context of the respective plays. Okay, people in 17th Century France didn’t really marry for love either, sex yes, money yes, but not really love, but I better not go down that path that is fraught with danger. Sure, the Greeks did have an understanding of love, but not in the sense that we understand it, and when it came to women, well, as far as the Ancient Greeks were concerned they just existed to bare children.

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that there wasn’t any jealousy, and this play goes to demonstrate that. The thing is that Andromache, Hector’s wife, was taken back to Greece as a slave by Achilles’ son Neoptolemos. She did have a child, but the child was thrown from the walls of Troy by the Greeks least he grow up and seek revenge against his father’s death by coming after Neoptolemos. Anyway the catch is that Andromache has had another child, this one Neoptolemos’ (which is another point where Racine departs since Neoptolemos and Andromache never got jiggy with it in his play) and this seems to raise a concern for Hermionie (who happens to have problems baring children herself).

This is where it gets a little complicated because all of Achilles’ relatives don’t want anything to be done to the boy, and they particularly don’t want anything to done to Andromache. However, Hermione, who happens to be Menelaus’ daughter, basically wants both of them dead, and Menelaus is sort of on board with this (though his father isn’t all that thrilled about the idea). Anyway, after getting her to hold off for a bit, Orestes comes along, and they both run off together and put paid to Neoptolemos as he is returning home from Delphi (why they ended up killing him is beyond me – maybe it’s the jealousy factor).

Yeah, the guy who wrote the introduction seemed to think this was a bit of a problem play as well. Then again, at the time Athens was at war with Sparta, and they do seem to heap scorn upon Menelaus, who happens to be king of Sparta. In fact they carry on about how much of a war monger he is, and he should have basically left Helen to her own devices and stayed home (though I suspect Agamemnon, who wanted to extend his imperial control, may have had a problem with this). He then leaves to go and put down a rebellion in a city that is supposed to be owing fealty to them, so yeah, I get a feeling that this play is a bit of an anti-Spartan tirade.

I could argue that this has something to do with the plight of women, and the plight of slaves, but then again, this is Ancient Greece, and Euripides really doesn’t come across as being one of those anti-slaver type of dudes. Pro-women, yeah, he seemed to have a problem with the treatment of women, if his plays are anything to go by, but the slaves, well, they weren’t even Greek (in most cases, and at least in Athens) so technically they basically didn’t count. Anti-War, well, yes, but then again that seemed to be a regular theme at the time, particularly since Athens seemed to be on the losing side for most of the conflict (and how they lasted as long as they did is a miracle in itself, but then again it did have a lot to do with their navy, and the non-existence of siege engines).

I’m probably going to put this down as one of Euripides’ lesser plays, though it still has some charm about it. Maybe one of the reasons that Racince sexed it up a bit was to give it a bit more depth, and a lot more bite. I think I’m going to go with Racine for this one.

Euripides'in en sevdiğim 3 kitabı arasına girdi kesinlikle. Karakterlerin her birisi ayrı ayrı mükemmel yazılmış. Karakterlerin birbiriyle ilişkileri ve konuşmaları çok güzeldi. Özellikle Peleus'un Menelaos'a laf sokması beni benden aldı. Göze batmayan komedi elementleri taşıyordu fakat aslında bir tragedya olduğu için kitabı sonu bir sürpriz olarak geliyor. 50 sayfalık bir kitap olmasına rağmen her sayfasından her cümlesinden çok ayrı bir zevk aldım. İş Bankası Yayınları'nın tüm Euripides kitaplarını almıştım fakat yazarın tüm kitapları yoktu. Bazı kitapları başka bir yayın evi tarafından çevrilmiş fakat çok başarılı bulmadım. Yine de koleksiyonum tam olsun diye almayı düşünürken Andromakhe'nin çıktığını gördüm. Yavaş yavaş da olsa Euripides'in eserleri çıkmaya devam edecekmiş. Ayrıca kitabı okurken 24.sayfa 510'da Andromakhe yerine Antigone yazılmış. Bunu yayın evine bildirdiğimde çok güzel bir şekilde cevap verip ilgilendiler düzenleme için.

Kitabın ana karakteri adından da anlaşılacağı gibi Andromakhe. Kitap Troya Savaşı'ndan sonraki zaman dilimini işliyor. Hektor Akhilleus tarafından öldürülmüş ve onun karısı Andromakhe başkasıyla zorla evlendirilip köle duruma düşmüş. Andromakhe ve onun hizmetçileri Menelaos ve kızı Hermione tarafından hor görülüyor. Akhilleus'un babası Peleus'un gelmesiyle her şey değişiyor. Fakat bir süre sonra Agamemnon oğlu Orestes ve birkaç tane daha bilindik kahraman ortaya çıkıyor. Olay örgüsü, karakter işleyişi ve kitabın konusu derken bir bakıyorsunuz kitap çoktan bitmiş. Kesinlikle ama kesinlikle tavsiye ediyorum okunmasını.

It's been so long,since I've had read this tragedy,but it shocked me greatly,giving the fact that I'm very familiar with the story behind the main protagonist. This is a person who has lost everything and everyone she valued the most (her father,mother,brothers,husband,son,home and homeland) by the hand of a foreign enemy,whose members have forced her into a life of misery and bitter memories.While she probably wouldn't hesitate to take her own life,it's the life of her other son (whom she got from her forced marriage) she cares the most,as the threat still roams from a new bride her husband has set his eyes upon. The only sorrow she has is from an old,but brave Peleus who, also, lives his days like a living dead man. This tragedy reminds me so much of Illiad, chapter 24 , where Priam offers a ransom to Achilles for the dead body of his eldest son, Hector, while laying at his kneels,which makes the great Greek warrior to cry and share the pain and emotional burden with the old man. If that part made you compassionate to both sides,than you should give it a try and read this tragedy. I will continue reviewing other tragedies of Euripides that I've read during this week. I agree with critics that this is a disorganized play. Andromache, who the play is named for, is only in it for the first half. After that, she is briefly mentioned by others, but she disappears from the narrative. Her life is saved, true, but her entire future is planned out by others, and she is to become a slave again for another man’s bed. This is a tragedy disguised as a victory. Peleus wins godhood and a legacy for his lineage, but Andromache will only know further humiliation. Once again, men carry out their aims and successes at the expense of female liberty and happiness.

Hector’un eşi ve herşeyinin başına gelenlerin anlatıldığı eşsiz bir tragedya. Andromakhe düşmanları helenlerin arasında barbar olarak yaşamaya çalışıyor. Hermonie tarafından ölümle tehdit ediliyor hatta tehdit eyleme dönüşüyor. Çok kısa ama çok güzel eserlerden biri Andromakhe. Troya destanı sonrası olanların anlatıldığı her eser gibi, eşsiz bir tat bırakıyor bünyelerde.

Euripides is by far my favourite ancient writer and every work of his I read proves why. This one is a subtle criticism of revenge and the hypocrisy of the Gods while at the same time exploring the role of women in Greek society. I liked the Andromache and Hermione perspectives most of all. I shall be sad when I don’t have any more Euripides left to read.

Eurípides siempre creó personajes femeninos fuertes y esa es, seguramente, la razón por la que me gusta tanto su obra.
Con Santi queríamos leer algo cortito antes de que terminara enero y viendo los pendientes que ambos teníamos elegimos Andrómaca.
Me gustó mucho cómo maneja el rol de la mujer, la idea de la venganza y otras cuestiones que van desarrollándose.

Tanto mi edición como la de Santi tienen tres obras: Orestes, Medea y Andrómaca y tengo pendiente leer la primera.

Euripides'in Andromakhe adlı oyununun MÖ 428-425 yılları arasında Atina'da değil de, Atina'ya coğrafi olarak uzak bir yerde (nedeni bilinmiyor) sahnelendiği düşünülüyor. Oyunda Hektor'un eşi Andromakhe'nin dramı konu edilmiş. Andromakhe'nin eşi Hektor ve minik oğlu Astyanaks öldürülmüş, ülkesi yakılıp yıkılmış, kocasının katili Akhilleus'un oğluna savaş ganimeti bir köle olarak verilmiş, mecburen Neoptolemos ile aynı yatağı paylaşıp ona çocuk doğurmuş durumdayken yeterince derdi yokmuş gibi Troya Savaşı'na sebep Helene'nin şımarık kızı Hermione üzerine kuma getirilmiş ve bu kumanın kıskançlık krizleri sonucunda ölümden kıl payı döndüğünü okuyoruz. Netice itibariyle kadınlar yüzyıllardır Hermione gibi kıskançlık nedeniyle hemcinslerinden intikam almaya çalışırken kendi kuyularını kazıyorlar. Zira kadın ve erkeklerin yetiştirilme tarzında yüzyıllardır çok büyük bir fark olduğu da görülmüyor (Avrupalı halk müstesna olabilir). Bu feminizm yanlılığının yanı sıra Homeros gibi gizli bir Troya yanlılığı da seziliyor Euripides'te: Sparta kralı Menelaos, Akhilleus'un oğlu Neoptolemos ve Helene ile birlikte Helene'nin kızı Hermione hep kötü gösteriliyor oyunda, Andromakhe hariç: Andromakhe, neredeyse oyundaki tüm karakterlerin aksine sadakatin ve erdemliliğin vücut bulmuş hâli. Tüm bunlar tesadüf olmasa gerek. Oyunun Atina dışında sahnelenmiş olması da bir tesadüf olmasa gerek. Euripides'in yazdığı 90 küsur oyundan günümüze 19 tanesinin geldiği biliniyor. O kayıp oyunlarda acaba nelerden bahsediyordu Euripides? Zihninin içini merak ettiğim ve hayranlık duyduğum nadir insanlardan biri. Mutlaka okuyun! Keyifli okumalar.

Η κεντρική ηρωίδα του αριστουργήματος αυτού του Ευρυπίδη είναι η χήρα γυναίκα του Έκτορα, η Ανδρομάχη, την οποία συναντούμε στον πρόλογο να εξιστορεί την ζωή της, την απώλεια του συζύγου της, αλλά και του γιου της. Η ίδια αναφέρει ότι πλέον βρίσκεται αιχμάλωτη, ως λάφυρο πολέμου στην Ελλάδα έχοντας πλέον ένα παιδί με τον Νεοπτόλεμο (γιο του σκοτωμένου στην Τροία Αχιλλέα) χωρίς φυσικά την θέλησή της και ο οποίος έχει παντρευτεί και την κόρη του Μενελάου, Ερμιόνη. Η Ερμιόνη επειδή είναι άτεκνη θεωρεί πηγή της δυστυχίας της την Ανδρομάχη και μια που ο Νεοπτόλεμος λείπει στους Δελφούς αποφασίζει να σκοτώσει και την Ανδρομάχη και το παιδί της με τη βοήθεια του πατέρας της, όμως ο Πηλέας ο πατέρας του Αχιλλέα καταφέρνει να τους σώσει. Η Ερμιόνη από το φόβο της ο,τι ο Νεοπτόλεμος θα την σκοτώσει όταν μάθει τι είχε πρόθεση να κάνει θέλει να αυτοκτονήσει αλλά τελικά φεύγει από το σπίτι με τον παλιό της έρωτα, Ορέστη ο οποίος σκοτώνει τον Νεοπτόλεμο. Η θεά Θέτιδα σύζυγος και προστάτιδα του Πηλέα εμφανίζεται στο τέλος του έργου και παρηγορεί τον Πηλέα κάνοντας τον αθάνατο ενώ μεριμνά για νέο γάμο για την τρωα��ίτισσα Βασίλισσα.

"Πολλές μορφές παίρνουν οι θεοί και πολλά ανέλπιστα τα ξετελειώνουν
όσα μες στο μυαλό μας βάλαμε δεν έγιναν
και στα αναπάντεχα τρόπο βρίσκει ο θεός"

Σημειωτέον ότι πίσω από όλη αυτήν την απίστευτη πλοκή ο Ευρυπίδης μάλλον κάνει "πολιτική" μια που οι αντι σπαρτιατικές αναφορές είναι πολύ συχνές μέσα στο κείμενο!

Andromache tells the story of the title character, who mainly spends time lamenting over the fact that her husband is dead and she feels guilt for being the mistress of someone else's (Hermione's) husband. Hermione and her father, Menelaus, seek to kill Andromache and her son because of this. I feel like that's all there is to it- although the premise is intersting, albeit soap opera-ish, it doesn't really go anywhere. There are a lot of times where the plot could have been sped up, but way too much time was spent with monologues that felt like filler instead of important information.

Definitely not a bad play by any means, but a bit boring for the likes of Euripides. I really expected a bit more out of Andromache than what I ended up getting.

This begins as the story of Andromache, and ends as the story of Peleus, father of Achilles. Neither deserves the bitter life they get, although it is fitting that the son of Achilles, after murdering Priam in a temple, gets murdered himself in a temple back home in Greece. In case Medea didn't make it clear, this play leaves no doubt that it is a bad idea for one man to have two wives.

This play ends with almost the same lines as Helen:
Past our telling, the ways of heaven.
The gods accomplish the unforeseen.
What all awaited, fails of achievement;
God arranges what none could dream.

i love how, in the midst of murder and strife, Euripides still finds time to absolutely ROAST Sparta… on MULTIPLE occasions

برای مایی که در کشوری و دورانی زندگی میکنیم که پروپاگاندای رسانه های حکومتی همه زندگیمون رو تحت الشعاع قرار داده، هر شکلی از پروپاگاندا در هر گوشه ای از تاریخ ادبیات میتونه یادآور شرایطی باشه که تحت سیطره امثال کیهان قرارمون داده و به همین دلیل تلخی هایی زندگی امروزمون رو تداعی میکنه.
پروپاگاندای وطن پرستانه در دوره اوج کارنامه اوریپیدس که همزمان با سالهای نبرد آتن و اسپارتا بوده، یکی از اجزای ثابت نمایشنامه ها به حساب میومده و گفتارهای شعارمآبانه کاراکترهای آتنی و رجزخوانی در برابر دشمن یا تحقیر او در ذهن خواننده امروزی هر ارزشی رو که در اثر ممکنه وجود داشته باشه، کمرنگ میکنه. مشکلی که من در همین اثر اوریپیدس باهاش مواجه بودم.
همینطور که قبل تر هم نوشته بودم، کاراکتر اسطوره ای منلاوس، پادشاه اسپارتا که در ادیسه هومر(قرن هفتم قبل از میلاد) پادشاهی عاقل بوده که میزبان پسر ادیسیوس میشه و اون رو با هدایای بسیار به سمت ایتاکا رهسپار میکنه، در نمایشنامه اوریپیدس (سالهای اول جنگ در قرن پنجم) تبدیل به کاراکتری تک بعدی میشه که به دلیل حسادت های دخترش تصمیم به قتل آندروماک بی دفاع و پسرش میزنه. در طرف دیگه پلیوس پدر آشیل قرار داره که با این گونه جملات مردم اسپارتا رو توصیف میکنه:

"منفنور ترین میرایان زمین هستند
مردم اسپارتا، نیرنگ بازهای دورو
اربابان دروغ، طراحان توطئه های شیطانی
با افکاری معوج، منحرف و ناسالم"
فقط به این دلیل که اسپارتا در اون دوره از تاریخ دشمن محسوب میشده و این کلمات به اجبار در دهان کاراکترها قرار میگرفته.

Euripides'in en çok eleştirilen ama bir o kadar da etkileyici tragedyası. Meşhur savaş sonrası olayları Andromakhe'nin gözünden izleyebileceğiniz bir eser. İçerik, dönemin normali olan savaş sonrası kölelik ve yerel anlayış üzerine de ip uçları veriyor. Bazı düşünceler günümüz penceresinden "rahatsız edici" gibi görünebilir bu yüzden anakronizme düşmemek lazım diye bir hatırlatmada bulunma ihtiyacı hissettim.

Bir solukta okunan kitap için iki eleştirim olacak, ilki notların sona konmuş olması. İlgili satırdaki not için kitabın sonuna git, oku, geri gel yaparken insanın dikkati elde olmadan dağılıyor. Antik Çağ'a hakim olduğum için çok sıkıntı yaşamasam da temel düzeydeki okuyucular için bu gidip dönüşler yorucu olabilir. Umarım bu sıkıntı tez zamanda düzelir.

İkincisi 505-525. dizeler arasında Molossos ve Andromakhe arasındaki diyaloglarda Molossos ile Andromakhe arasındaki diyaloglarda Antigone’nin adını yazmak gibi bir hatayı başka bir yayınevi yapsa önemsemezdim ama İş Kültür’de görünce üzüldüm.

OK, Griekse tragedies in het Grieks lezen is altijd heel interessant en een hele belevenis, maar dit stuk is gewoon best wel mid? Echt een chaos van random mensen die ineens opgevoerd worden?? En like halverwege heeft de jaloerse moordlustige sister wife Hermione ineens helemaal spijt en komen haar moordplannen ineens door de influisteringen van allemaal random vrouwen die niet met ons in de room zijn en nu ineens blijken te bestaan?? like het enigr waar iedereen het eens over is is dat alles misgaat als de o zo eMOtioNeLe vrouwen zich met dingen gaan bemoeien?? like alsnog heel mooi geschreven enzo allemaal en Andromache is ook best interessant als personage als vrouw die als oorlogsbuit is meegenomen en sowieso ook een best interessant centraal conflict rondom jaloezie/erkend willen worden zeker in een samenleving waar je als vrouw weinig anders daarvoor hebt dan je potentiële kinderen (idem voor de oude man Peleus overigens)... maar not your best Euripides
