HER INDOMITABLE SPIRIT

Ravishing, emerald-eyed Heather Devereux set sail for France to marry the Comte de Beaulieu, a man she'd never seen. But a band of Arab pirates hijacked the ship bringing the beautiful young Englishwoman as prize to their notorious Ottoman prince. Defiant, innocent Heather found herself the captive of Khalid Beg, a fiercely bold warrior who made her his slave --- and thought he could bend her to his will ...

HIS EMBATTLED HEART

He was called the "Sultan's Beast" feared by all but this courageous beauty who challenged him as none had ever dared before. She would be his instrument of revenge on the hated Comte de Beaulieu. I'm a dog person. Who lives with 10 cats. Get the picture?

My first brush with the romance genre happened in my high school junior year. I discovered Gone With the Wind and hid it behind my American history book to read during class. (The Civil War is American history.) The ambiguous ending left me dissatisfied, though. Rhett and Scarlet needed a happily-ever-after. Believing in happily-ever-afters positively screams romantic-at-heart.

On the other hand, I love murder and mayhem as much as happily-ever-after. My usual television fare is fiction and nonfiction crime shows, not love stories. Which accounts for the mysteries I sneaked into my historical romances. Now I'm trying my hand at writing a humorous mystery, sans historical and sans emphasis on the love interest. I even prepared for my mystery-in-progress by attending the local NRA's Pistol School. Shooting pistols is great fun. I adore the .22 semiautomatics.

After graduating from high school without distinction, I earned both Bachelor and Master degrees at a state college. Again, without distinction. I held several part-time jobs during my college days: file clerk in an insurance company, long-distance telephone operator, kimono-wearing waitress in a Japanese restaurant.

And then I began my teaching career, eighteen years in the eighth grade and thirteen years at the high school. Weary with the same old routine, I decided I needed a creative outlet. So I decided to write a romance novel but only managed to talk about writing one. After five years of listening to me, a friend said to stop talking and start writing.

So I did.

I made every mistake known to man. Blunder would be a more appropriate word, but I did learn using the trial and error method. As well as studying the works of authors I admired.

After five years of writing for nothing but love, I sold my first novel. Since then, I've sold eighteen novels and won several awards--- National Readers' Choice Award New England Readers' Choice Award, Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice and KISS Awards, B. Dalton and Bookrak Awards for best-selling author. My novels have been translated into fifteen languages and sold in twenty countries.

If I had my life over, would I become a writer? Nope. I would enjoy being a Victoria Secret model. Perhaps in my next incarnation I won't be too old, too short, or too unphotogenic.

I'm not a big fan of sheikh and slave hr books! I only read this book to finish the series. So I was astonished on how much I ended up enjoying it!. Once the author got rid of the master and slave shtick and the MC got married, the book improved massively.

I really liked both MC. Though with Heather's attitude, she's lucky it was Khalid who owned her. I don't think any other Middle Eastern or any man from that time, would have put up with her pranks. Heather's biggest problem is her bluntness. She cracked me up with under the breath comments. Khalid came to appreciate Heather's unconventional thinking and humor. For some crazy reason, this couple just worked!

Conclusion: If someone like me enjoyed this book then you know it's a pretty good hr!

Meet Heather -- harem slave with attitude. Meet Khalid -- sultan with sex appeal. This book is both steamy and light-hearted, a perfect historical romance!

When I first started reading this story I thought it reminded a lot of the stories I remember reading back in the 90’s … and then I realized it was first published in 1993 so it’s actually a re-release. To be honest had this story been first released just recently I would have rated it one star however back in the day things were different so I can see why the story was written the way it was.

So, our heroine Heather is a spoiled brat that is accustomed to getting away with pretty much anything and everything, except with choosing the man she gets to marry. When she meets dashing but “savage” Khalid and is threatened with becoming a slave she behaves as expected and never bends to his will. The interaction between the two was interesting to say the least. It was pretty funny at times but it also tended to be annoying.
I had too keep reminding myself of her age most of the time so I didn’t hate her for being such a shrew and him for acting so superior.

The story and plot were interesting enough to keep me up until late at night but I felt the pace and dialogue were somewhat stilted, but again that could have been my fault because I haven’t read anything like this in a looooong while. Overall it was an ok read and I’ll probably be reading more from this author.

*** I received this book from the author at no cost to me and I volunteered to read it; this is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher.***

2.5 stars. It took me awhile to finish this book as I was used to the contemporary world of romance and not the "Ottoman Empire"time period. That being said, I found the story to just be "OK". This book was published in 1993. If I read this book when I was 14-15 and still living in my native county I may have possibly liked it - maybe even really liked it. However, living here in the US and with the political climate, news and controversies, I kept thinking about real life issues of people with that type of religion and in countries similar to the one in the story so it detracted from any/some enjoyment I had with the story. Thats why I feel if I read this years ago instead I wouldn't be affected by that.

The story and time period is pretty barbaric and brutal. The H at the very end sort of gave in and that showed that he really loves the h. The h showed fire and spunk but later in the book I'm like huh??? why does SHE have to just bend to his will?? The H is slightly nice given the fact of his culture and what he is allowed to do (and he doesn't even though he can) but I have absolutely no idea how the h can live in this type of culture. I'm sorry but its a totally different type of life and really, for me, barbaric.... Anyway, 2.5 stars...

22% in and all I am reading is this. He says: You are my slave! Do as I say or else! She says: No I am not! Repeat, repeat, repeat. Attempt at escape in the middle of the dessert. He says: You are my slave! Do as I say or else! She says: No I am not! Repeat, repeat, repeat. I think I will put this away for now. It all sound so silly to me. Maybe I will go back to it some other time. Next book sounds promising though. We will see.

Desert Eden (Book 3 Devereux Series) by Patricia Grasso is a romantic, passionate, and lush Elizabethan Romance, set in England. While, book 3 in the "Devereux" series, it can be read as a stand alone. *A re-release*. Patricia Grasso is a new author to me and one I thoughly enjoyed.

This is the story of Lady Heather Devereux and sn Ottoman prince, Prince Khalid, who is handsome, sexy, and seeking revenge. So he uses Heather to gain his vengeance, her uses as a pawn to draw out her attended, Comte Beaulieu.
When Prince Khalid's friend brings home the spitfire, Heather to him, there's more than vengerance transpiring. While, vengeance can be sweet, love, respect and HEA is sweeter.

"Desert Eden", has pirates, revenge, passion, respect, romance and love which makes for an outstanding read. A romantic read that is fast paced, complex and compelling. I enjoyed this title and look forward to more reads from Patricia Grasso. A great read!

This was my first "adult" romance novel. I don't even remember how I came across it but I did. I was probably a freshman or sophomore in high school at the time. :) Such sweet innocent memories. Fast forward 20 yrs and several life experiences later and i still love this book. There's something about Heather's spirit that really makes me like her character; when she riles up the Sultan's harem and the banter that is thrown about between her and Khalid. It's a romance novel and a good one at that. :)

A highly debatable rating. this was a book that I had to really struggle to read. It is written in a fantastic way, has a good plot line and good characters, however, in this day and age the content bothered me so much I had to struggle to finish the story. Having said that, i will say this author is beyond talented, I genuinely can say that for most you will be captivated by her writing and just enjoy the way she has of pulling you inside her stories. I was given this book in return for an honest review. Regards, Anna

Needs an edit, but since it was published in 1993 I don't think it will get one. It was a nice book. I would have appreciated it more in 1993.

Clash of Cultures and Pride

This book is completely different from most medieval historical romances that I have read. I don't think I have ever read a book where the heroine was captured by pirates and then taken to an Ottoman prince as a gift. The lady in question is a cousin to Queen Elizabeth I and was on her way to her betrothed in France when the ship was attacked. When the pirate finds out who she is, he decides to give her to his prince. In the first scene between the prince and the lady, it pulls you in right away with the inherent conflict between them. It so happens that her betrothed is a sworn enemy of the prince. So their relationship is rocky from the start, to put it mildly. But this made for a quite fascinating relationship arc. It actually turns out they are quite well suited, even if they both fight it for a while. I like that he ends up having more respect for and treating her better than she probably would have been treated in England or with her French betrothed. I found this to be a very different but compelling read.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Love, Adventure, and Treachery Across the Desert Sands

He captured her for revenge, but she was unlike any woman he knew. They lived at a time when there was slavery, but Heather yielded to no one. How could she survive as a captive? You would think you might hate Khalid as a captor, but the Sultan’s Beast just might surprise you.

This is a lovely historical romance that will take you across the high seas and through the Ottoman empire. It is filled with adventure, treachery, intrigue, and romance. Khalid captured Heather for revenge, but the Englishwoman stole the Muslim man’s heart. Could there be love between a Christian woman and a Muslim man? What about the evil Comte? Would he give up his betrothed, or would he attempt to retrieve her? Revenge and love are at war in this lovely story that will take you on a journey across the desert sands. You will feel like you are there, walking with them. I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to lovers of historical romance.

Ms. Grasso's writing style is a bit different from most historical authors I have read, but I think that is what makes her books so appealing. This one was no different. The content is a controversial for this day and age and I admit, it was a little difficult to get through, but that aside, it's a very well written book. Ms. Grasso is truly a very talented author and she really knows how to weave a tale that you really become invested in. The plot and storyline really pull you in from the beginning and you are captivated by Heather and Khalid. Both characters were well developed for their roles and there was definitely strong chemistry between them. It's a very different kind of love story, but a very fascinating and compelling read. I hope you give it a try!

Read this long back. Had abandoned then.
Tried again July 2025.
Was irritated but the Hh grew on me.

In the beginning the H was too rude.
When a H tries to torture the h by not giving her food and eating yummy food in front of her while her stomach is growling plus later she is being given bland food….uhhh. I hate such guys. This is one of my biggest pet peeves. Guys trying to show force and domination with food is so not cool.
Also h showing the vulnerability to H by asking for food or salivating by looking at his yummy food is not my idea of a romantic fiction.
Then the auction thing annoyed me although H did stop it but it was so disturbing.

After that I pretty much adored both of them. They were cute and I loved their banters.
Except the harem culture (not hero’s but his uncle’s) and the overall restrictions was kinda off putting but I enjoyed the book. I loved how the H ended up fulfilling the h’s wishes and demand.

The feisty English beauty and the beastly prince. On her way to meet her future husband, the ship Heather and her cousin Alice are on is overtaken by a muslim prince’s men. When they find out she is the intended of Khalid’s bitter enemy they give her to Khalid to use as bait. But As Khalid keeps her and trains her in the ways of a slave and the ways of an Eastern woman, he falls in love. Now how can he auction her off as a way of bringing his enemy to him so he can get revenge for his brother and sister? I absolutely adored Heather. She was smart, funny, strong, and brave. And Khalid never did anything to hurt her, and was so gentle with her. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review

The Moslem prince and his Christian princess.
I was greedy I got the chance to pick up not one but three books by Patricia Grasso on Booksprout. What I like about her books is that they are a bit twisted and that makes them fun reading. They are also written in a style I enjoy a bit different from modern pieces. I found this story interesting Heather the brat meets Khalid the savage and the sparks do fly. I do understand the other reviewers pov it is a bit wordy but I would read bags of these types of books way back in the ’70s. This book and the other two are just blasts from the past for me. There are good stories and I hope you give them a try. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

Desert Eden is the third book in the Devereux Series and is a good historical romance.

Kidnapping, danger, drama, suspense, humour, and romance combine to make an enjoyable read. The characters are well developed and suit the time period.

Beautiful

Although slightly twisted, this story was a beautifully told romantic story. I loved the strength in our heroine and the extent our hero would go too keeping her love.

LOVELY!

I remember reading this novel many years ago, and enjoying it back then just as much as I did this last time. The main characters, Heather and Khalid are endearing and believable, they fit perfectly into the historical setting Ms. Grasso created for her readers. She has crafted an adventure, added a villain and a "mean girl," plenty of humor and an abundance of romance. What more could an avid romance reader interested in starting a new series want? Not a thing but time to read in peace and quiet....
