I’ve always wanted to write. Ever since I was little, I would craft stories and poems but the idea to actually do it “for real” never really crossed my mind until last year. After sitting on three paragraphs of what would eventually become my first novel, I decided to expand upon what I had. At the time I had no real idea of where the story would go, I just knew I had the time to do something with it.

I hadn’t researched market trends, I had no idea about query letters or the evil synopsis, and I was green on the idea of agents and editors and all that is publishing, really. I just wanted to write something I enjoyed. I didn’t plot, outline, or character build, I just wrote. And then an author friend mentioned that I should take my writing to a conference.

So with the confidence that my novel would surely be welcomed by all who read it, I signed up for as many seminars and critiques as I could. I knew someone would love it. In those two days, I found out I had a lot to learn.

Funny, but as a former English teacher, you’d think I’d have figured out the importance of editing and revision and revising again. You’d think I’d have known that the first draft is just that, a draft. And when the critiques started coming in, I thought I was done for. Not that the premise wasn’t good (I was told it was), not that the characters weren’t believable (I was told they were), but I used too much passive voice, I tense shifted and there were some holes in the plotline.

A few agents really liked it, but the market trend couldn’t support it. Some were not fond of the way I told the story. I queried and queried my way to 57 flat out rejections and a number of partial and full requests that didn’t pan out. But along the way I got some great criticism and pointers and I made the story better. Then, on a whim, I trolled the SavvyAuthors website and signed up for a three line pitch to editor Lauri Wellington and I did a happy dance when she requested my full manuscript.

A month later, she responded that she loved the story and the concept but it moved too slowly but I could resubmit if I revised. I informed her I sent her a revision that was based on the opinions of agents, authors and peers but I had the original (cleaned up, of course) and I was sending it in to see if it was more of what she was looking for. And guess what? It was! One caveat, I had to revise the manuscript into past tense. Easy peasy, right? Wrong.

Revising into past tense from present is line editing your entire novel. And it kinda stinks. By the end, I thought my eyes were gonna start bleeding and pop out onto my keyboard. But you know what? That little “exercise” tightened up what was loose, filled in any plot holes that might’ve still been there and forced me to realize I could be a better writer.

The road to publication can be long. It can be a hop, skip and a jump from your first query. Nothing in publication is set in stone. The market is always changing. And the biggest thing I learned is that it’s all subjective. Agents A-Y may pass but all you need is Agent or Editor Z to believe in you as much as you believe in yourself. And I believe in my first novel. And I am happy that Black Opal Books does too. I hope you do, as well.

I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest reviews.

Plot line.
Good vs Evil is the basis of this story as with millions of others in the same genre...
Choises between good and evil is as old and older than writing...
Being betrayed, having to choose is ancient, Cain and Able can tell you that...
Samantha however has a twist on this age old battle, one I found entertaining and I am sure it will resonate with most readers.
5 *

Characters.
Samantha, Sebastian, Lucas and Ethan forms the basis of the main protagonists of this story with Samantha being the character at the heart of it all.
Samantha does not faint, she does pass out, but from exhaustion, the fact that she does not faint 10 * review rating.
I am always taken aback by authors who write STRONG female protaganists and have these faint twice on the first page,
Samantha is not such a protagonist and Christine is not such an author.
Lucas is the sweetheart, Ethan the hearthrob and Sebastian evil incarnate but not even in retrospect was all as it seems in the garden of Eeden, so why should it be here?
5 * for characters

Writing style and editing.
The book is not flawless, one more edit line would have dont the world of good.
But the story was soooo good, that I, a true pain in the butt with these things noted and moved on.
4.5 *

Overall impression and recommendation.
I loved this book. I really did. It is good, it is fresh, it is a YA novel written by a grownup which means it is full of action and emotion but that terminal teenage angst was missing.
I recommend this too all who read nephilim, angel stories or who love a paranormal twist. It will not offend any faith or belief system but will entertain and delight.

Back off Buffy!

I raised an eyebrow or two before I decided to take a stab at this one. Seriously, my genre is non-fiction history. In the past months I've taken a moment and stepped away from the comfort zone to see what else is out there. Some of the books have been really good while others shouldn't have been written. This one falls into the first category.

We have all seen the same old story line concerning good and evil. It's been done a thousand times with the same results, but never have we seen it from the eyes of a seventeen year old who is about to find out what everyone else already knew; she (unwillingly) holds the key between darkness and light. She alone can decided the fate of mankind or will she straddle both worlds and play both sides? That's pretty cool. This reminds me of "Time Weaver" by Thomas A. Knight.

The key players are Lucas, Ethan and Samantha. Lucas and Ethan have been charged with training her for a coming battle. She hasn't a clue what is going on. Hm, how many seventeen years old (male/female) have we known with that quality? Can't count that high.

The most intriguing part of the book, it is told in the first person. No one is describing the events or adding unwanted commentary. The words are coming from Samantha and her feelings. This is right up there with "Scars" by Patience Prence.

As I read farther, the plot and action picked-up. I can see where every teenage girl who thrilled with the adventures of Buffy and today's True Blood and Vampire Diaries will fall in love with this story. What teenager doesn't want to be a true heroine while also exploring the sensations and feelings of love? They can also relate to the inner demons facing Samantha as she is forced to decided which side to take and which lover will do? Ah, but there is a problem. Are the potential mates there to train and watch over her, or is there a more sinister plot brewing?

Will Samantha's rage for her father's death guide her to the dark side or will she learn how to control her hate and channel it in the right direction? Think of the movie "Red Dawn" when the guerilla's learn that their parents were executed. How did that turn out? Yep, Samantha is full of pent-up energy that when used out of rage and anger has everyone ducking and taking cover, and I MEAN EVERYONE!

I recommend this book to all girls and women who are thirsting for a strong female character who never completely conquers her inner demons.

I found that angel books have a high exception of what they are supposed to be like. Most are all "angles are good" and so on. Torn wasn't your average angel book. I really liked Sam and her personal struggle with what she felt and how she acted. She knew what she wanted, even if that wasn't what it seemed like to the others. I enjoyed her personality and she was...relate able. The background and explanation of the angles was wonderfully written. I liked the suspense and you didn't really know how it was going to end, which a lot of books DO have predictable ending. The romance is this novel, was just enough. It teased you, and left you wanting more when the book was done. Torn will suck you in and you'll want to keep reading to the end. And then want more. Christine did a wonderful job with this novel.

I enjoyed Torn, it was an interesting book to keep me occupied for a couple of hours. Samantha, is a fallen angel with both the blood of the Exiled and the Faithful. When her father is killed before he can explain anything to her, the job falls to her best friend Lucas and Ethan. She will have to choose a side to fight on, and since she is of mixed blood both call to her, especially the Exiled. The book really came from the characters. Hughes does an excellent job with her character development. I felt like I was in the middle of the story. When Samantha met several other Faithful angels and they reacted so negatively to her, I felt myself copping an attitude. If I had been in her shoes I would have said, “Fine, you think I’m so dark and evil. I’ll just take the Heart of Hope and all of my abilities and joined the Exiled. How do ya like that?” Yes, I do have the maturity of a 5 year old! :)

I found it refreshing that Hughes allowed her characters to be “good” yet have judgmental attitudes. I’m expecting in the next book that more Exiled will join the Faithful and have less judgmental attitudes. That fits with real life. When you’ve made mistakes ion life and can own up to that you are less likely to judge others. Whereas, many of the Faithful have never had to fight for the light, for forgiveness, and for strength to stay faithful to their chosen path. They can be quick to make assumptions and pass judgment on others (like they did with Ethan and Samantha); and I can see how if the Exiled choose to switch allegiance they may have the opposite attitude. One particular thing that set this book apart was that both the Faithful and Exiled are born human and have the bloodlines of either group and can ultimately make a decision as well. Most fallen angel books seem to just have the angels making a decision as to where their allegiance is, and I thought it was creative that Torn included a bloodline as well.

I’ve read so many books in the “angel” genre, but this is one of the first that recall where the protagonist had to walk both sides and be “the balance”. I think that was a unique plotline that will allow Hughes to explore various areas and scenarios in her books that other authors haven’t done yet. That being said, the plotline was fairly predictable from the beginning. That doesn’t mean I enjoyed the book any less (just like I enjoy Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series). Even when you know what to anticipate, the author can make it enjoyable through his or her character development, and Hughes did just that. There is one thing that bothers me with all of these YA books, and that’s the “betrayal” of someone in the inner circle. The author always depicts the betrayal as a huge shocker, yet for those of us who have read several of these books we know who that person is going to be from the moment we pick up the book. SPOILER ALERT********* Once Ethan mentioned that he didn’t know who is father was I already made the connection in my mind. I do wonder if Hughes will use that background as a development to her plot or if it was just for shock value*********END SPOILER

I’m expecting Sam will have to walk a path alone, but with Ethan doing his best to support her. The Faithful will never truly understand her, except perhaps the older generation or those with special talents. I think the Exiled will actually understand her more, which I believe will ultimately result in the joining of the 2 groups. Granted many will choose not to, but I see that as Sam’s purpose. As Hughes made clear Sam’s path is to walk the 2 groups and be the balance. Ultimately, a leader has to arise and it would need to be one that understands both groups.

I recommend this book if you like angel books, or even just paranormal. Hughes does a great job with her characters, her world building, and I think the plotline will continue to evolve and keep her readers interested.

Destiny has a plan for Samantha that she knows nothing about. Before he can teach her what she needs to know to take her place after him, her father is killed trying to guard and hide the Box of Hope. Protecting and training Sam is now the responsibility of Lucas and Ethan. The protection her father gave her will wear off when she turns eighteen and so far, Sam is clueless. Having grown up with her, the guys decide Sam needs to know the truth her father kept from her if they are going to have her continued cooperation.

Samantha more special than she could have imagined. Her parents were part of the Fallen, angels who are descendants of angels who left heaven. It's all about choices. The Exiled are those who chose the dark side seeking to control everyone and convince them to walk away from their faith in God. The Faithful are those who strive to protect humans from the Exiled, to remind them that God still exists. Sam sits in the middle. Her mother was one of the Faithful, who died when Sam was born. Her father, a former Exiled, who walked away when he could no longer tolerate what was being done, kept his past from his daughter as long as possible.

The guys take her to New England where others can help train and protect Samantha. There she meets others who can help. The voice is back stronger than ever, taunting her, telling her to run. Sam's abilities are more powerful than the others thought and fed by her emotions. Her power comes from both parents and isn't under her control yet. Frustrated by a love that shouldn't be and blindsided by betrayal from a direction she couldn't have anticipated, Samantha is torn in two and doesn't know how to pull herself back together. She better figure it out quick; she's running out of time.

Hughes has taken two familiar themes and put her own spin on them. Most of us have heard of Pandora's box at some point, most likely in school. In Torn, Hughes put her own spin on it, creating something new to play with in the form of the Box of Hope. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that many readers of fantasy have come across the term "nephilim at time or another too, generally considered to be the children of angel and human parentage. Here again, Hughes has put her own twist on things and given us a division where one side wants to control everyone and the other wants to protect free choice.

A teenager still struggling to come to terms with the truth of her father's life and death, a destiny that sets the fate of the world square on her shoulders, and good and evil angels are more than any girl should have to deal with. Hughes spins an intriguing story that works well with the twists she has put on things. Samantha is very believable as an emotional and occasionally over-wrought teenager. Well written, near perfect editing, I truly enjoyed this story. I'm also very happy I don't have to wait for the sequel as it's already in my library.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review (Lop or Lovers of Paranormal)

Another wonderful read by yet another author. Torn was a beautifully written book with strong characters. The whole angel aspect was not new, but the story definitely was. But there were times in the book, if you read very closely, you can figure our what happens in the book. But this kind if predictability does not ruin your experience of the book.

Torn is Samantha’s story. How she deals with her father’s death and the resultant consequences. She s walking a thin line between darkness and light, and she has the power to ti the scales either way. But what she needs to do is maintain the balance between darkness and light, despair and hope, hate and love, because one can’t exist without the other. Add to that her feelings for a guy for whom she should not be feeling anything.

Her dad’s death almost broke Sam, but when her best friend Lucas and his brother Ethan tells her, her father was not the man she knew but an angel, it becomes the last straw. She is not given enough time to grieve her father and mourn his loss. But piling on the reality of her situation does nothing to help her. She finds herself getting more and more angry and wanting to hurt people. The only one who centers her is Ethan.

In this journey where she wants to avenge her father’s death, she realises that

“Anger fueled by love will not condemn you. Anger in spite of
love makes you no better than those you seek to destroy.”

She realises that only love can help her stand her ground, and to defeat the darkness she needs to first accept it too. Betrayal by someone she thought to be family and feelings towards a guy who is forbidden makes her task all the more difficult. In her quest to save her loved ones as well as the humankind, will she lose herself?

Samantha grows as a character through the course of the story. She becomes a warrior from just a normal teenage girl. She grows into her abilities and accepts who she really she. She is in a constant inner turmoil and keeps fighting to stay on the right side.

There are a few things that might confuse a reader in the beginning though. The prologue starts in March, where we find out Sam’s father is dead, then in chapter one starts in September where Ethan is in training with Sam, chapter three goes back to March. The author does not mention the year so initially it gets a little confusing as you think it is moving forward than talking about a past incident.

A definite four star book. Cross my fingers for the second book.

Argh!! Prepare yourself for a cliffhanger my friends......

So let me start with the iffy part first. The beginning of 'Torn' did have me a bit confused as it went back and forth between present, past, dreams and reality. I got to a point where I wasn't sure if a pivotal scene with Samantha aka Sam (our poor tortured main character) actually did happen or if she just dreamed it. Later in the book these first few chapters are explained and I was fine with it at that point.

So that's the iffy and here is the oh sweet angel in heaven goodness. The whole thing. Period. Loved this book. I enjoyed this story as much as I enjoy a chocolate bar at midnight. Um, in case you don't know me that is a whole heck of a lot!

The synopsis is self explanatory so I won't repeat that. What I will tell you is Christine Hughes does an amazing job of exploring the gut wrenching confusion and feelings of Sam who is torn between good and evil. Part of you wants to slap Sam and tell her to 'man up' or whatever the female equation of that is but if you put yourself in her shoes you realize she is spiritually being ripped in two by forces that she has no control over. Her best friend Lucas and his older brother Ethan act as her guardians trying to protect her and train her for a future that she has technically not decided on yet. As they race to protect Sam from the evil fallen angel Sebastian, basically he was the brains behind the the whole apple in the garden of Eden plot that destroyed man's ability to live peaceful lives (yea, thanks for that Sebastian), we come to realize we can't always trust in whom we thought we could and the answers may not be the ones we want.

This is a wonderful first book to a series that I will most certainly be following. There are some nice twists and turns along the way and as I stated in the beginning of my review there is a cliffhanger that will leave you hopeful for the future and yelling at Christine to write faster!! Oh and there is a nifty little forbidden love story too.

Review 6******

I was given an Advanced Reader Copy of this book by the author in return for an honest review.

This is a fantastic YA paranormal thriller/romance that I fell in love with!

Samantha English thinks she's just another teenager, but she's not. She is a fantastic character, who is confused and upset at the death of her father. However, she finds out that there were secrets kept from her by her father and the two boys in her life, Luke and Ethan; Secrets that completely shatter her world.

This book starts out at a fast and relentless pace, and never really slows down! It grabbed my attention and held it almost from the first sentence. The tension in this story is quite palpable, as a good thriller should be. The protagonist, Sebastian, appears briefly in the beginning of the book, but doesn't actually appear to Samantha until two thirds of the way into the book, although his presence is felt from the first page. It is quite chilling!
Luke and Ethan are brothers, taken in by Samantha's father when their father was killed in an accident. After her father's death, however, Samantha finds out that she is a Fallen Angel and she must chose between the Faithful or the Exiled. It is a battle between good and evil, with a splash of forbidden love and betrayal thrown in for good measure.

Christine Hughes has written a fantastic YA Paranormal Thriller/Romance that is completely unique. Instead of Heavenly angels, she has written about Fallen ones that are battling among themselves. I am now looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I highly recommend this YA Paranormal Thriller/Romance to the older teens, as there is a heavy make out session that, although not consummated, is a bit on the steamy side! - Lynn Worton (WaAR)

***THIS BOOK WAS GIVEN TO ME IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW***

Book Synopsis
With the sudden, mysterious death of her father, Samantha discovers her life isn’t what it seems. Sam discovers she isn’t the normal teenage girl she thought she was and she must take her father’s place in the fight between two groups of fallen angels, the Faithful and the Exiled, in a race to save humanity. Sam must deal with betrayal, forbidden love as well as fight the growing darkness within her as she struggles to make a choose between siding with the Faithful or the Exiled. Both sides require sacrifices from Sam.

I was anticipating a book that mirrored another YA paranormal series, and I was pleasantly surprised by the originality of this book. It is a fast paced paranormal thriller that is geared to a young-adult market.

Hughes does an excellent job with her character development. The characters were developed enough so that the protagonists could remain good while showing some of their less desirable attributes. After all, no one is completely good or completely evil.

I have not read a book about angels before, and I enjoyed the balancing act Samantha performed. The plot was well developed, but there weren’t many surprises. It is a classic good versus evil story with the usual inner-circle betrayal thrown in.

I look forward to the rest of the books in this series!

Christine Hughes creates a refreshing supernatural plot with the notion in mind that everybody loves the concept of forbidden love, betrayal and the prospect of a young person whose destiny is to save the world.
The overall storyline is symbolic as it gives the overall image of ‘one thing cannot be present without the other.’ Dark cannot be without light nor love without hate. This overall message running throughout is very good lesson that can be carried through life; there will be fear and sadness at some point but there will be hope and promise to balance things out.
The first person narrative of Samantha was a very good choice and the fact the she uncovers life changing information at the same time as the reader allows the story line to become more unpredictable. A character who is ignorant of the real truth added that much needed excitement as no one wants a know-it-all.
The pace however was felt to be very slow in places; there seemed to be multiple dialogues that explained the same things which were unnecessary. Admittedly, the opening of this story has a good story line (it has promise of danger and mystery) however the scene was not followed through properly which spoiled the effect.
That said the sequel will be an interesting read as we eagerly await the fate of Samantha and Ethan.

I got this book from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side which I'm thrilled to give!

Firstly I would like to thank Christine Hughes, author of Torn for giving me this wonderful opportunity to read and review this fabulous book.

I really fell in love with this book and it's characters, the story is just awesome. The main character Samantha is brave, confident and truly kind. You will just love her as I do. The emotional aspect of the story will definitely reach you and you'll feel all the emotional turmoil that Samantha goes through.

The presence of darkness matched the presence of light and the author proved that one cannot exist without the other. The concept of fallen angels was a fresh start in the paranormal genre and you won't get bored for even a nanosecond for sure. A true epic read.

The story is thrilling and fast paced, It will grip your attention from the very first, the suspense that the author managed to keep all through the story was really spooky and is ought to give you chills down your spine.

All in all a fabulous read which you wouldn't want to miss at any cost.

I was gifted a copy from the author for an honest review. This is a series I am sure to follow because I love reading about angels. Ms. Hughes has got my attention on this one. So if angels and demons is something you enjoy reading then pick this book up.
Samantha isn’t allowed to mourn the loss of her father. She’s training on a daily basis and not sure exactly why certain talents are coming out in her. But she hears a voice of someone that is calling to her to join them and it’s getting closer. Lucas and Ethan have taken Sam under their wings to train her and have been her best friends since she can remember. She is a chosen one that will decide whos side she is going to be on. But with the blood lines she holds in her, her choice is going to be tougher than she even thinks. She knows which side she should be on, but will that be easily decided as she experiences different feelings and obstacles? Especially when she comes face to face with Sebastian the one that killed her father?

Torn

In a race to save humanity, fallen angels of both dark and light fight against each other. Samantha is thrown into this world after her father dies and nothing will ever be the same for her again. With so much being thrown at her in a short space of time, it’s hard for her to get her head together and the dark is just so much easier to follow. It’s a very intriguing read, with a well thought out plot line and I loved the way the author managed to combine both dark and light within Samantha. With the descriptive nature of the book and the use of flashbacks, no questions are left unanswered but leave you wanting so much more. With plenty of action, adventure, betrayal, love and loss, this book will keep you gripped and turning page after page.

I received this book in return for an honest review (LOP or Lovers of Paranormal on Goodreads.com).

Wow! This book is amazing! Such a great addition to the genre. It was unpredictable and didn't follow the standard formula that we often see in YA paranormal suspense. I cannot wait to see how Samantha uses the new talents she has discovered and how her relationships with Ethan and Lucas will evolve. And what will Sebastian's next move be? This is the best kind of novel - the kind that leaves you wanting more! Ms Hughes has made a fan of me!

I loved the book. I like how Christine Hughes portrayed Samantha's character. She was brave, smart, and caring. I was sad by what happened with Lucas I was all for Sam being with him. (Sigh) maybe he'll make the right choice later on. I always like books that deal with an angel that has both light and darkness in them because it makes the plot more interesting with the internal conflict. Over all it was a great book and I hope I have a chance to read book 2.

For me this was a quick read. As soon as I started reading it was hard for me to put down. Samantha is a normal teen or at least she thought she was. When her father dies a whole new world opens up for Samantha those close to her guard a secret that there is huge shock there when Samantha finds out.

Samantha learns that she will be able to balance both the light and the darkness but it seems that she has to learn to control her emotions. You can tell Samantha is a teenager because she is in that teenage crush age. She loves her best friend Lucas but has also fallen for his brother Ethan. Though Ethan can not act on his feelings because of certain rules.

Though out the book we see how Samantha tries to come to terms with this new life of hers though it seems to come at a cost.

On top of trying to get all this figured out she learns that there is an Exiled who wants to kill her. Sebastian will stop at nothing to get to Samantha even if that means hurting those close to her. It will be a battle that Samantha has to pick which side to be on and it won't be easy.

Now I would normally give this book five stars but there were so many grammar issues that I had to drop my rating down!

The fight between good and evil is still at hand. A young woman can tip the balance for better or for worse depending on the path she takes. She struggles within herself fighting her own demons and those trying to persuade her to evil. But will it be enough? Samantha always thought she was a normal human teenage girl. Her father had protected her from the truth until his death. Now it is up to Samantha to decide if she will follow the plan he had set up for her to land on the side of good, or will she let her demons win and evil consume her?
I loved Torn! This is an amazing book on the war between good and evil. The author fills this story with hope, love, despair, betrayal, and sadness. There is so much to this story and it's told in such a way you don't want to put it down. Samantha just found out who she really is and is dealing with a lot. After just finding out about the death of her dad she's learning how to fight and use her new found abilities all to fight in the war between good and evil. The hard part is figuring out everything and sticking to the side you know is right. Now it's up to Sam to pick the side she wants to fight on: good or evil. To her it's a simple black and white answer: Good. But what she is learning and starting to understand is that the choice isn't always that simple. Each and every person has a darkness inside of them that is always trying to become the more dominate, it is a struggle and not one where good can always win. Sam's dad wasn't always on the good side of the fight so her demons are a lot stronger than she has yet to realize. With the help of her friends Lucas and Ethan she is training to fight and stay strong to the good inside her. Although she's fighting to stay on the path of good she's seeing that her darkness is starting to gain some. When the three have to relocate for more help in training Sam, she starts to see who her two friends truly are. One will fight with her and be the balance she needs while the other will betray her and through that betrayal push her to turn into who she needs to be. I give this book 5 fangs for how amazing and enthralling the story is. This book was a gift from the author for a honest review. I give thanks to Paranormal Romance and Authors that Rock for giving me the opportunity to read Torn and go on this amazing journey for a new series.

Torn is a wonderful YA Paranormal book about a 17 year old girl, Samantha, which holds the key to tipping the scales between good and evil, she just doesn’t know it quite yet. There is plenty of suspense, with a touch of romance to piqué a reader’s interest. Samantha’s two best friends, Lucas and Ethan, move in to help care for her after her father’s untimely and mysterious passing, and she soon finds out that things are not exactly as they appear to be. Her father is not who she thought he was, he was not the doctor she thought he was, heck, she isn’t even sure who she is anymore! She has moments of unexplained temper tantrums, and things start to whirl out of her control, and out of her hands.

Samantha has the weight of the world on her shoulders, for her path alone determines whether the world will be controlled by the Faithful, or the Exiled. Unfortunately, she has an internal storm brewing, she was born to be an Exiled, but she believes she can remain on the side of the Faithful like her father was able to. But can a 17 year old really be able to fight the demons inside that are itching to get out?

Lucas and Ethan made a promise to Samantha’s father to help train her and prepare her for the inevitable fight, and train her they will. They have to relocate twice to keep Sebastian, the leader of the Exiled, from gaining control over Samantha; until she is strong enough to fight back. But things, and people, are not always what they appear to be. Samantha soon learns who her true friends are, when one person she thought she could put her faith and trust into betrays her and the Faithful to stand next to the leader of the Exiled. Is a betrayal like that ever forgivable?

One of the lessons this book teaches that I really like is that we are all given the free-will to choose which path in life we will follow- good or evil. Regardless of what blood we were born with, it is ultimately up to us. One of my favorite lines from this book that is repeated a few times toward the end is: “Anger fueled by love will not condemn you. Anger in spite of love makes you no better than those you seek to destroy”.

I highly recommend this book to those who like reading about Fallen Angels, or any YA lover, and I look forward to reading more from this wonderful author.

Today's review is on Torn by Christine Hughes

Truth be told, I had finished reading Torn about a week ago but haven't had the chance to write my review until today. I tried a few times earlier, but just couldn't get it done. Kind of what it was like for me to read the actual book. The first time I picked it up I was only able to read the first chapter. The second time I got as far as chapter three. But it was the third time that was the charm.

Once I set everything off to the side and informed my husband that he needed to pick up dinner, I sat in my favorite chair and read, and read, and read. I couldn't put the book down! Yes, it was a bit muddled in the beginning and the heroine was, well let's face it, she was all over the place with regards to her love life. First she loves James, then she lust's over Lucas, then she's in love with Ethan. See, all over the place.

At first I thought that perhaps Samantha was "torn" between the two "brothers" and was content to read another boring teen book where girl meets boy and boy meets girl, they start to fall in love, and then girl falls in love with boy’s brother/friend or another guy. That was and wasn't the case though. It wasn’t another boring teen book. Okay, there is a triangle, but not the one your thinking of.

Unknown to Samantha, she is the child of an Exiled Angel and a Fallen one. Her mother, the Fallen Angel, died shortly after Samantha was born, and her father the Exiled. It was just her and her father, and Lucas and Ethan for a long time and everything was all fine and dandy, that is until the death of her father turns her life upside down.

Samantha begins to hear a taunting voice, Lucas and Ethan pack up and the three of them move to her dad's cabin, then the boys start to "train" her on how to protect herself. But for what? The voice keeps getting louder and she's desperate for answers. Answers she can only get from Lucas and Ethan.

Through the pages of Torn we learn that not only is Samantha torn with her feelings for Ethan, she is also torn between the Darkness of the Exiled and the Light of the Fallen within herself.

Oh, and that triangle? You won’t even see it coming.

I truly great addition to my library. I just hope Hughes remembers me when book 2 comes out!

I am very Torn over this novel. Pun intended. I rarely read a book where I can't decide how I feel about it when I'm finished but I'm definitely there with this one.

I really liked the beginning of this book. the prologue definitely hooks you. You are following James English as he tries to save an item that is imperative to keeping hope alive among the human race. He has been betrayed by someone he trusted and i was literally on the edge of my seat reading as fast as I could to find out whether he makes it. I won't say whether he does or not!

After the great prologue I was fully prepared to love this book but then the story moves on to James' daughter Samantha. Once again, her first chapter is great. She is training with Ethan and we find out that she's harboring a secret crush on him, and why wouldn't she? Ethan is amazing! But then the story kind of slows down and gets confusing. The timeline jumps around a little bit and I think the story would have benefited more if it had just stuck to some sort of chronological order. Sam's character is a bit all over the place. She wants Ethan but can't have Ethan. She's angry at Ethan and at the same time not angry at Ethan. She is afraid of turning dark but at the same time she's sure she'll follow the path of the light. And truth be told, I had a hard time following her violent temper tantrums.

With that being said, there were some things that I really liked about torn too. The characters, with the exception of Samantha, were very likeable and well written. The suspense and mystery that the author built up around the betrayer was unreal. At one point I really thought I knew who it was. I even wrote it down. I was totally wrong. And the ending was pretty fantastic!

I feel like I need to point out that while I still can't decide how I felt about the book as a whole, I did find it to be extremely intriguing. While I didn't love it, I did find myself wanting to read on and find out what was going to happen next.

In the end I decided to give this book 3.5 out of 5 stars. The storyline is good, the characters are interesting, and I do want to read the next book to find out how it all progresses.

Torn is the story of Samantha. Like any teenager she struggles with her identity and inner conflicts. She lives a normal life with with her father and foster brothers. All looks good until her father is murdered.

In her grief she discovers she has some special abilities. She doesn't have much control over them, because her emotions change so fast. But when she puts her mind to it she can do some amazing things. She just needs to learn how to get her abilities under control, because she fears losing control and injuring someone she loves.

Her brothers eventually explain what is happening. Sam is an angel, as are the two boys, as were her mother and father. She is here to lead the battle between the good angels (the Faithful) and the evil angels (the Fallen). As a Faithful she is committed to the good side, but the Fallen are after her, sensing any weakness she might have so they can recruit her. And the Fallen do look pretty attractive to her.

So Sam begins to train. She knows she will have to kill Sebastian, the lead angel of the Fallen, who also killed her father. In the meantime, she starts to fall in love with one of her step-brothers. This just complicates things, and causes her to lose her focus. She also learns that her father once was a Fallen angel, although he came over to the Faithful side, so she has both Fallen and Faithful blood in her.

For eons in angel myths there has been the story of a very powerful angel who can walk equally well on the dark and bright sides. Is Sam that angel? If so, Sebastian will not be able to kill her, and she will not be able to kill him. It will be a draw. But Sam doesn't care much about that. She is going to kill Sebastian anyway. She is also going to rescue her younger brother, who has betrayed her and gone over to the dark side.

The book is marketed primarily as a Yong Adult novel, but adults will enjoy it as well. The book is also the first in a series about Sam. For a YA novel the scenes are richly detailed. The pace of the book is moderately fast, appropriate for a suspense/thriller. If you like suspense and action with a hint of the paranormal thrown in this is the book for you.

There is no good way to tell your best friend that her father was a fallen angel and that she is descended from dark and light. She will have to choose a side and hopefully it will be the right choice. Talk about pressure, since her fathers death Sam's life has been spinning out of control. Dark visions, voices in her head that terrify and confuse her though dreaming about her dad makes her feel close to him still but the fear in his voice is almost palpable. Something is coming for her and she needs to be ready to fight although Sam has no real understanding of who or what that is. She has two protectors to watch over her, Lucas a childhood friend who Sam had a crush on when she was younger and then there is Ethan. He is her friend, her biggest fan and someone she trusts to keep her safe. He seems to be able to know how she is feeling and is always there to offer a shoulder to cry on which is often lately. Distracted by her growing attraction to Ethan, secrets are revealed that could hinder their affection for each other if they act on it. Torn between two brothers, one is her salvation and the other could be sacrificed if she makes the wrong decision. Her brain is on overload, feeling pressured and insecure, Sam is struggling to control her gifts or her mounting feelings that threaten to overshadow her soul and destroy everything. The Faithful seem convinced that Sam has already chosen a side as she has begun her transformation and it is only a matter of time before she succumbs. Sometimes it is not about who you are but it is what you do that defines you, the choices you make and how you live. Her father told her she will lose before she succeeds and she would be betrayed but by who? Darkness or light, redemption or retribution, love and hate, sometimes the lines get blurred. In life there needs to be a balance and the hard part is knowing where to draw the line. Whilst I did find this book really entertaining I was a little disappointed in the ending and thought it anticlimactic. The story built up for this final battle and for me it was over far too easily. All that aside I will be buying the next book as I found Sam likeable and engaging.

Ever read a book that makes you wish you'd thought of that? TORN is that book. A paranormal thriller, TORN, is about seventeen-year-old Samantha. And Samantha is not just any teenage girl. She holds the key to the battle between good and evil.

When her father dies, Samantha is thrust into a new world with a host of unearthly beings. Samantha has no idea about the life she was destined to live as a fallen angel. Finding out that everyone you know and love is not who they said they were would turn an adult's world upside down, so imagine what a teenager would feel. And finding out that, not only are you a fallen angel, but you're the one fallen angel that holds the balance between good and evil, or hope.

Suspense, action, betrayal, and romance... TORN had it all. I thoroughly enjoyed the character development. Sam, Ethan, and Lucas were characters that captured my interest from the beginning. Ms. Hughes did an excellent job with pulling me right into the story, keeping me invested in the outcome.

I haven't read a lot of books about angels, but I'm glad that I picked this one up. Not only did the book entertain me, it had an underlying message (I always love those). Samantha can choose light or dark as she has both bloodlines running through her. She can choose to fight with the Faithful or give into those dark impulses and join the Exile. Just like real life, sometimes it feels easier to succumb to the darkness. And Sebastian, the leader of the Exiled, is hot on her trail. But, ultimately, it's Samantha's choice. It's a real decision that everyone makes in their life, choosing the path we should go. I love how the author presents this internal and external battle. The battle within herself and the desire to be "good", but knowing there is this "bad" part in her. It's not easy, by any means. I was left to wonder... can good exist without evil?

All in all, I have to say it was an excellent book and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

The YA paranormal thriller TORN by Christine Hughes is an excellent, well-written novel, and I was instantly unable to put it down. This highly addictive story begins with action on the very first page and keeps the reader immersed in a whirlwind of mystery, suspense, and romance throughout. I was immediately able to connect with the protagonist, Samantha. Having always thought of herself as a "typical girl", she finds out how very untrue that is after the tragic death of her father. Everything she ever thought she knew is proven false, and she must come to terms with a very new and frightening reality. As a descendant of angels, she is caught between light and dark, having to decide not only who it is she will choose but also who she will fight alongside in an epic good vs. evil confrontation. This is not an easy decision for her, and I thought the internal conflict that she faced was written in a way that made her extremely believable as she struggled with confusion, grief, anger, and heartache on her journey toward becoming stronger and more sure of her destiny.

Samantha is watched over by her life-long best friend, Lucas, and his older brother, Ethan. Though Lucas has become more like a brother to her, Samantha has secretly fallen for Ethan, as he has fallen for her. The romantic tension that exists between them is heightened by the fact that theirs is a "forbidden love". There are many moments between them - both sweet and steamy - that have the reader cheering for them as a couple no matter the consequences. The author's voice and style are incredible, creating a world into which the reader can easily become immersed. The plot twists keep the reader guessing until the very end of the book. I highly recommend TORN and know that you, like I, will be left wanting more of Samantha's, Ethan's, and Lucas's story once you reach the end of this first book in the series.

REVIEW

This is a first time read by this Author for me.

In this book we have good angels vs dark angels. Samantha is a 17 yr old girl whose world is about to be turned upside down and the life she thought she knew will never be the same.
Samantha’s father James is trying to protect a box which has been in his care to guard. Sebastian kills him with the death sword. Samantha’s best friend Lucas and his brother Ethan are there for her however they are going to turn her world upside down. Someone is constantly whispering to Sam and she has no idea who or what it is. Something Dark she knows as things appear different. Soon after Sams’ fathers death Lucas and Ethan take Sam and they go stay at the cabin that was owned by Sam’s father they feel this is the safest place until the darkness finds them. While at the cabin Lucas and Ethan finally tell Sam everything. There are angels and her father was one who went from the dark side to the light side. They tell her she is the one who will finally win out. Samantha isn’t sure she believes all of this but knows something is different. She trains daily and becomes much better with her learning her gifts. But the darkness has yet again found them and they are now on the run again. They are going to stay with the others who are like them. Samantha is so drawn to Ethan and finally she learns that he feels the same. But something threatens their getting together.

The book is well written and flows smoothly there were a few grammar issues along the way but nothing that would deter me from saying this book is a wonderful read.

I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

So I'm borderline on this one. And it sucks because I was prepared to really like it based on others' reviews. But if I am being completely honest, I had a hard time reading this book. Not that it wasn't interesting, but because the characters were just all over the place and I had no idea where this was going. It started out with James and that part was very good. Then things cut to Sam and at first that was going fine and I'm thinking so far this is interesting....until you jump back in time 6 months to when she first learns of her father's death and things just start to get difficult to read until closer to the end. The end was great. All of the things that were hinted at come to a head and then leaves you with knowing there will be more to the story. At about the last 10% of the book, it was back to being very good, but before we get there, the wishy washy back and forth that not only Sam portrayed, but Ethan and Lucas to a smaller extent just drove me crazy and not in a good way. I just wasn't understanding why she was so unstable. She was crazy about Ethan, but confused about Lucas. Then guilty about Ethan because of Lucas, then angry at Ethan, and seeking Lucas. She was angry and not herself, and convinced she was evil, but also convinced she would not succumb. I mean seriously all over the place. It comes together at the end when she has an epiphany, but until that point...I just wasn't sure what I wanted for her other than that Ethan NOT be the bad guy. Yep, loved him even when he was a little strange-acting himself. So yes, I will read the next book, but I can't say that I loved this one. Some may find this really intriguing, but I have to say that when I struggle to read something, I can't honestly say that I loved it and should rate it that way.
