What is in a simple act of mercy? What’s the cost? Volumes. Life-changing it would seem. For Tzadkiel the Archangel of Mercy, he has spent almost a century looking for one person who still understands the worth of mercy in a world that has become void of it. For Lourdes, she is the treasure, the sliver of light, of mercy that remains in this world overcome by cruelty. Tzadkiel has found her, and she is the only hope of keeping the last horseman, Death, from being unleashed onto mankind. It’s only half the battle, though. Tzadkiel has to keep her safe as Death hungers to be released early and is bent on breaking Tzadkiel. Death will use the one person as leverage to tempt Tzadkiel to give in. If Death can hurt her enough, make her suffer more than the Archangel can bear, maybe he can make Tzadkiel forget about what it means to be the champion of mercy. Death has his own champions too. With the soldier Sauvage, who seems possessed with the spirit of Hell itself on their trail, Tzadkiel and Lourdes are forced to flee. Tzadkiel vows to protect her, but Sauvage is determined to have his revenge on Tzadkiel and take Lourdes for his own as part of his sick payback. Death looks to overtake Tzadkiel and Lourdes. Mercy though has a life of its own. It inspires yet greater moments, a fountain that starts as a trickle and then gushes forth. So, it is with Tzadkiel and Lourdes, which is the story that shines through, battling to overcome the grip of Death. Even in the terror and the suffering endured, something else emerges between them. Love. We watch Tzadkiel trying to sort out this strange feeling that grows ever stronger towards Lourdes that goes beyond protecting her to fulfill his task. Being in a physical body and all these human emotions is causing havoc for him. Then there’s Lourdes that knows clearly what she’s feeling, but tries to dismiss it. Because who would love her? She’s nothing, reduced to a servant in this new world, one where men will take what they want. She’s already experienced it, and she wants no more of that world. But Tzadkiel is different and deep down she believes that too. Almost a century he has searched, and he says she’s worth saving. What’s in a simple act of mercy? A treasure found. Hope for the future. A love that can endure. All certainly, worth fighting for. Even if it’s against Death itself.

As much as I loved the first part in this series, somehow this part was even better! Where the first was spend in a dark, very dark, perfectly drawn dystopian tone, this one, while still dark, spent most of its time with Tzadkiel and Lourdes alone, on the run. Since they are such beautiful characters it didn't hold the same darkness. Now don't take that wrong, this is still dystopian at its finest and that darkness is always in your reading periphery... then its in your face. Wowza, it is so in your face as things tense up. That end. So much yes, edge of your seat stuff.

I really enjoying getting to know Tzadkiel and Lourdes more intimately and I love the evolution between them. In his brief moments Chevalier really caught my eye. I hope we see much more him in the last two parts, much much more. ;) Oh and Sauvage is savage. He is a perfect villain in his evil nature. I appreciate how bravely he was drawn, not shying away from what makes evil so, well.. evil.

This is one of my favorite dystopian worlds. I love the characters. I can't wait to read the next part.

Clandestine is a work of fiction in the fantasy, action and adventure sub-genres, and was penned by author Cynthia A. Morgan. Written for adult audiences due to some instances of explicit language usage, moderate violence, and sexual scenes, this novel forms the second book in the Mercy Series. Set in the distant future of the twenty-fifth century, the book focuses on Tzadkiel, the Archangel of Mercy, and Lourdes, the last merciful person amongst humankind. As the pair escape, they are still relentlessly hunted by a villain who would claim Lourdes as his own. What results is a high octane fantasy chase with plenty of action and a blossoming romance.

Author Cynthia A. Morgan has crafted a beautifully atmospheric fantasy piece that delivers on all fronts of storytelling. Readers seeking strong characters with realistically developed emotions will enjoy the central pair, who are put to the test in many exciting ways as the novel unfolds. For those who admire the worldbuilding elements of fantasy fiction, Morgan delivers a lavish world with beautiful word choices that highlight the supernatural characters and the very hellish villains that populate this dangerous future world. And for readers seeking a solid plotline, the work moves extremely well through peaks and troughs of action and emotional resonance, giving a fully rounded journey that they can accompany the heroes on and feel satisfied with for the second novel’s conclusion. Overall, I would recommend Clandestine to fans of the existing series, but also to readers looking to dive into an action-packed fantasy work that has it all.

A great follow up to Misericorde. Misericorde works as a complete read but I would recommend reading it before this one.
The books are set in a terrifying future. The first three horsemen of the apocalypse have ridden, and Death is waiting in the wings. With scarce resources civilisation has broken down, with a chasm between the few lucky ones and the vast majority who live in poverty and servitude. Humanity has been given a small sliver of hope by Tzadkiel but those in power fear and torture him.
Clandestine starts where Misericorde finished. Tzadkiel and Lourdes with the help of Levesque have escaped on horseback.
As with the first book the author has created an imaginative future landscape with close attention to detail and perfect logic. I enjoyed the growing relationship between Tzadkiel and Lourdes as they flee to safety. Although they are the central characters I appreciated learning how Levesque was faring back at the castle after facilitating their escape. Sauvage becomes the true villain in this instalment. I was intrigued bt the character, Chevalier and I hope to see more of him later in the series.
The story is fast-paced as Sauvage closes in on the escapees. Characterisation is good as individuals are pushed to their limits and decide how to react. The author slips between action scenes, tender moments and violence with ease, always taking the reader with her.
An enjoyable read with relevant underlying themes.

Tzadkiel and Lourdes are on the run, and hoping to find a safe place beyond the reach of the Protectorate. Unfortunately, not only are they being hunted, but Death is impatient to begin his ride.

Wow, lots of fascinating characters. Some I loved, Tzadkiel and Lourdes, particularly. Others I despised, I'm sure you can figure out which ones. All of them are well written, and remarkably well written. There are lots of unexpected, and surprising twists that kept me glued to the pages. I think this is a must read, fantastic book.

Before I dive into my actual review, I want to say how THANKFUL I am to Cynthia Morgan, who so gracefully gave me a free copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review. I have been DYING to read this sequel since I finished Misericorde, and even though life has been a bit insane and I haven’t had time to write up this review, Clandestine is all I’ve been able to think about. I’ve read other books since then, and I am just…. STUCK on this stinking series.

ABSOLUTELY FREAKING FANTASTIC. BREATHTAKING.

Did you like how I used different adjectives this time around? Heh. Cynthia’s world building continues to blow my mind every time I pick up one of her books. The fantastical, science-fiction environment that somehow blends both reality as it could be in the future and the supernatural world of angels and demons is perfect.

Good grief, the romantic tension. That’s another reason that I had to stop so frequently. I’ll preface by saying this: I am a very expressive reader. If you watch me read, you’ll know exactly how I feel. So, this book is ROMANTIC. I put it in all caps and bold so you’ll know how important this is to me. Because it’s not the type of romance that’ll make you fan yourself and hide your phone screen. No, no, no. This is like squealing out loud in my car and beating the steering wheel while you blush like a little school girl (I did all of these things). This is the best, innocent style of romance. I was melting in my seat, you guys.

Once again, I’m gonna have to give his book a heaping 12/10. It’s honestly better than the first, and I cannot wait to read books 3 and 4 when they are released. I’d read Cynthia’s grocery list, at this point, if she’d let me.

Cynthia Morgan continues to weave a beautiful story in book two of the Mercy Series. As I stated in my review of book one, the author's narrative style is enthralling and almost lyrical as she draws the reader into the plot and characters. While Tzadkiel and Lourdes are pursued and under threat of capture, the bigger story is one of innocence, purity, and discovery. Trust and love are highlighted through a sweet and cautious bonding together of two souls. The Archangel of Mercy struggles with being incarnated as a human and how to reconcile the full spectrum of his emotions. In reading this, I could recall the wonder and preciousness of falling in love. In the wasteland and aftermath of devastation, love still blooms in all its sweet innocence. I look forward to the next book in the series.
