I like this book. It broke down some spiritual principles, but then challenged the reader to go and search for themselves. The author, Bolz, wanted to emphasize that it's ALL about a relationship with Jesus, but then through that, so many good things can flow.
Quotes from the book that stood out to me:
"...if our value before God is defined by what we do in ministry or for a church, then we land in a very deep pitfall. We begin to believe that we can earn the respect of Heaven by what we do on Earth." pg 42
"When we focus on loving Jesus, the virtue of His love lets us, enabling us to love others with Christ's very love. When we focus primarily on ministering to people, the focus on loving God takes a secondary place in our heart, or sometimes even a lesser place" pg 47
"God asks a high price from us on Earth so that He can originally reward us in Heaven" pg 50
"The only thing in this world that truly counts is our love for God, expressing itself as obedience to Him through radical steps of faith." pg 64
"We need not wonder whether we have the gift of prophecy in order to proclaim God's heart upon the Earth. We need to boldly make prophetic declarations that release God's full inheritance to Jesus, without waiting for others to do it. If we are consumed with the desire to furnish Jesus with His inheritance, then we will become the vessels of honor that deliver it to Him. As we grasp this understanding, we will no longer look for our place in the Body of Christ, or ask what kind of gifting we have. We will do whatever we can to give Jesus what belongs to Him, at any cost." pg77
"Our passion and desperation for God occurs not once, but repeatedly and sickly, as God continually turns our gaze toward eternity. The more our affections belonged to God, the less satisfied we are with earth" pg 90
"While we will never understand the mind of God, we will find his blessings when we believe and pursue what we cannot even imagine seeing!" pg 91
"We are never qualified by ministry position or a particular spiritual gift. Instead, we are qualified by our pursuit of God's loving fellowship." pg 91
I'm a fan of Shawn Bolz, but honestly this was kind of boring. I enjoyed the few stories he included, but other than that, I just felt like he said a lot without really saying much. I think I expected a more prophetic book, which is why I liked the stories more. The overall message of putting Jesus first before ministry is great, but that shouldn't be revolutionary and it didn't feel relevant to what he was trying to say. But what was he trying to say? I'm not sure. It didn't really flow well and for that reason I found myself re-reading a lot of sentences and saying “wait, what is he talking about and how does that relate?” So yeah, not my favorite. But I'm sure many others will find it enjoyable, because there is good content. Just not my cup of tea as I've heard a lot of it before and am not really into IHOP-y teaching these days, as it feels more like the gospel of the radical Christian than the gospel of Jesus.
This book convicted me and caused me to rearrange my kingdom priorities. I realized that I had been so focused on my earthly calling of ministry, that I forget my main priority is relationship with Jesus!
I choose this book because when i read a sample of it, it whet my apetite to know more about God and heaven. I will recommend this book to all christians who want to know more about our Lord Jesus Christ and a preview of heaven.
Shawn Bolz did a marvelous book of truth! Recommended for all Christians who want to grow in their relationship with God. Definitely Holy Spirit inspired!
a very convicting book that turns your attention back to the fact that first things first ,'Love the Lord your God with all your Heart, Mind and Soul.'
