One day Lazaro Herrera will get revenge on Dante, his half brother, who received all the love and opportunities from their father that he was denied. When Dante's sister-in-law Zoe arrives in Argentina, Lazaro sees his chance for revenge.
But Lazaro hasn't counted on Zoe's blond, blue-eyed beauty and the powerful sexual magnetism that smolders between them. Will his plan for revenge fall apart or can he still go through with it and deny his own happiness?
Born in Visalia, California, I'm a small town girl at heart. I love central California's golden foothills, oak trees, and the miles of farmland. In my mind, there's nothing sweeter in the world than the heady fragrance of orange blossoms on a sultry summer night.
As a little girl I spent hours on my bed, staring out the window, dreaming of far off places, fearless knights, and happy-ever-after endings. In my imagination I was never the geeky bookworm with the thick coke-bottle glasses, but a princess, a magical fairy, a Joan-of-Arc crusader.
My parents fed my imagination by taking our family to Europe for a year when I was thirteen. The year away changed me (I wasn't a geek for once!) and overseas I discovered a huge and wonderful world with different cultures and customs. I loved everything about Europe, but felt especially passionate about Italy and those gorgeous Italian men (no wonder my first very Presents hero was Italian).
I confess, after that incredible year in Europe, the travel bug bit, and bit hard. I spent much of my high school and college years abroad, studying in South Africa, Japan and Ireland. South Africa remains a country of my heart, the people, the land and politics complex and heart-wrenching.
After my years of traveling and studying I had to settle down and earn a living. With my Bachelors degree from UCLA in American Studies, a program that combines American literature and American history, I've worked in sales and marketing, as well as a director of a non-profit foundation. Later I earned my Masters in Writing from the University of San Francisco and taught jr. high and high school English.
I now live in Seattle and Hawaii with my three sons. I never mind a rainy day, either, because that's when I sit at my desk and write stories about far-away places, fascinating people, and most importantly of all, love. I like a story with a happy ending. We all do.
As a romance this story falls short, but as a revenge story - well - it's got all the negative emotions going for it. Bitterness, betrayal, self-doubt, regret, passion. Jane Porter writes with such energy and plunges you into the emotions that it takes awhile before you realize that not a lot of this makes sense. :)
The heroine of this story is the sister to the poor horsefarm heroine from In Dante's Debt. The hero is half-brother to Dante and it is Dante he wants revenge against. I felt sorry for Dante in the first book, since he had to clean up his father's messes and he had a rebellious teenage sister to deal with. In this one, he has a betraying half-brother who is hitting him during his weakest moment, when is wife is due to give birth.
The hero has been waiting for years, working side by side with his brother - all with an eye on to taking over his half-brother's business and putting him out in the street. He doesn't care that he's mad at his dead father and taking it out on his half-brother - he just wants revenge for growing up poor and illegitimate.
He has agreed to "kidnap" the heroine so she won't marry the sleazy guy from book one who wanted to marry her sister. Dante has asked him to do this so that his wife won't worry about her sister in her last weeks of pregnancy.
Like I said, not a lot of this makes sense, including why the heroine falls in love with the hero as he explains how he is going to hurt his half-brother and the sister she loves. The only motivation I can think of: the heroine is angry she was kidnapped because she never gave the sleazy guy an answer and she is angry about Dante's high-handed tactics. It's either that or lust as she is sleeping with the hero while her sister is in labor and the newspaper headlines are screaming that the family business is sliding into bankruptcy.
The heroine feels guilty
Like I said, nothing made sense - but if you want high drama and lots of sibling betrayal - this one is for you. The H/h were both really wrong in their behavior and the H/h from the first book are good enough to forgive them - sorta. Revenge doesn't pay, kids.
Lazaro Herrera is the illegitimate son of Tino Galvan. Since his father wanted nothing to do with him, Lazaro, living with his mother, grew up poor and he had to struggle for everything he got, while his half-brother Dante Galvan grew up with all the privileges that the Galvan name entitled him to. After years of planning, Lazaro is ready to take his revenge on the Galvans and his target is Dante. Zoe Collingsworth gets caught in the middle of Lazaro's plans for revenge when she arrives in Argentina to visit her pregnant sister, Daisy, who is married to Dante. Lazaro kidnaps Zoe, she learns of his plans against her brother-in-law, and tries to talk him out of it. The two are both fighting an attraction to one another, knowing that nothing can ever come of it.
This is the second book in The Galvan Brides series by Jane Porter. It can be read on its own, but since Dante and Daisy from the previous book, In Dante's Debt, feature in this one, it added to the story for me from having also read their story.
This was a very enjoyable revenge story with a hero so set on having his revenge that nothing was going to stop him. There were some very emotionally charged moments in the book--between the half-brothers, between the sisters, and between Lazaro and Zoe. I was completely drawn into the story. I thought the ending was great. It was nice to see the happily ever after, which was hard to imagine there could be at times, after the mess Lazaro made with his plot for revenge.
Hero grew up poor and unwanted because his father rejected him whereas his stepbrother Dante had all the privileges. Now rich and powerful he seeks revenge. Our heroine Zoe is the weapon Lazaro intends to use for his revenge. Zoe is Daisy’s sister who is married to Dante. He kidnaps her and takes her to his house. But Zoe falls hard for her captor. She is a good sweet person and her goodness makes Lazaro a better man. He realizes revenge is pointless and forgiveness is everything. Eventually their love triumphs and they get their HEA.
Beautiful, touching love story all it needed was an epilogue with cute babies.
So pissed right now because of the absence of epilogue. And this book needed it so very much. It took me sometime to connect with the book but once I did I liked the unexpected turns it took. I also appreciate the sacrifice hero did in the end. Loved the heroine though. She was sweet, generous and a fighter. Recommended.
This is the 2nd book in Jane Porter’s The Galvan Brides series. Each book is the story of the late aristocrat Count Tino Galvan, a man known for his fabulous looks and wealth. He was married twice and indulged in loads of affairs which resulted in a number of legitimate and illegitimate children.
Lazaro Herrera is the illegitimate son born from an affair the Count had with Sabana Herrera, a young maid in the service of the Galvan family home and had been cruelly thrown out into the streets with any money and help and refusing to acknowledge the birth of her son.
From a life of struggle and poverty he attains the position of CEO of the Galvan company and has dedicated his life in getting back at the Galvans’ and taking over Dante Galvan, (his half-brother)company and bring down the family. Zoe Collingsworth, Daisy’s sister who is married to Dante, is kidnapped by Lazaro – at Dante’s request and is taken to the house that Lazaro had built for his now dead mother.
From the moment they see each other, a powerful sexual magnetism sizzles between them. Zoe is a beautiful, caring and strong person. Lazaro is a strong hero is at first the wounded, hard and strong hero. Realizing the love for each other, Zoe’s optimism and belief in the goodness inside Lazaro’s heart, revenge no longer seems to be that important.
Difficult choices have to be made but at the end their love overcomes all the obstacles facing them. A story about revenge, forgiveness and how important family love is.
Not sure how I feel about this book. It felt incomplete. I liked the characters and kinda enjoyed the story, but it left me feeling...blah. I ga e it 3 stars for the bits that I liked, but this isn't a book that I will read again.
I wanted to love it because of the novel plot but found the writing very surreal...insta love and story seemed disjointed to me. The kidnapping being orchestrated by Dante didn't make sense and then the necessity of marriage didn't ring true. The hero's actions at the end were extreme and treacly and didn't made sense (most of what he had he'd built on his own, not from his father's family). Something just felt off in the plot/execution, although I usually like Jane Porter and she is an excellent writer.
Book 2 in the Argentinean Series, and it is just a great as the first one! I felt like I already knew some of the characters and what they were going through. Lazaro was a very complex man and Jane Porter did a nice job of pealing off the layers for us, so that we had a better understanding of what was driving him. Zoe, was much stronger that I thought she would be and that was a pleasant surprise.

I found this to be a very exciting book with lots of twists and turns. I couldn't wait to see what happened next. Lazaro bent on revenge all his life against his half brother Dante will stop at nothing to make his point. Zoe changes his life and makes him a better more caring person. This is one of those romance books that anyone will love.
This was just too dark and sad at the end. It was excellently written. The hero really is remorseful in his hunt for revenge. Revenge not a theme i care for or it would been much higher.
