Emma Darcy is the pseudonym created by the married writing team of Wendy (1940-2020) and Frank Brennan (1936-1995). Their life journey has taken as many twists and turns as the characters in their stories, whose international popularity has resulted in over sixty-million book sales. With more than a hundred titles, Emma Darcy appeared regularly on the Waldenbooks bestseller lists in the U.S.A. and in the Nielson BookScan Top 100 chart in the U.K.

Wendy was born 28 November 1940 in Australia. Her sister was the novelist Maureen Mary (Miranda Lee). Her father was a country school teacher and brilliant sportsman. Her mother was a talented dressmaker. She obtained an Honours degree in Latin and initially worked as a high school English/French teacher. She married Frank Brennan, an Australian businessman born in 1936. She changed careers to computer programming before marriage and motherhood settled her into a community life. She was reputedly the first woman computer programmer in the southern hemisphere.

As voracious readers, the step to writing their own books seemed a natural progression and the challenge of creating exciting stories was soon highly addictive. They were published since 1983. In 1993, for the Emma Darcy pseudonym's 10th anniversary, they created the "Emma Darcy Award Contest" to encourage authors to finish their manuscripts. After the death of Frank Brennan in 1995, Wendy wrotes books on her own. She lived in a beachside property on the central coast of New South Wales, and liked to travel extensively to research settings and increase her experience of places and people.

Wendy Brennan passed away on December 21, 2020. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and sister, writer Miranda Lee.

School teacher heroine is desperate to escape from a former boyfriend who is stalking her. She interviews for a job in the Outback as governess to the widower hero's son and two other children. Hero is attracted to her and doesn't want the complications.

When he calls to tell the heroine she didn't get the job, her stalker is there. Heroine pretends she has a date with the hero to scare off the stalker. Hero is worried after her strange response to his rejection. He uses the address on her resume to find her. She is in near-hysterics with the stalker parked outside her flat. Hero decides to bring her back to his station. He figures she'll hate it as much as his wife did and leave after a month or so.

Heroine fits right in. She's a good teacher and she quickly makes friends with everyone on the station except for the hero's aunt and the wanna-be OW who flies her own plane in from the neighboring station.

H/h eventually give into to their attraction and begin an affair.

The H/h were likable characters. They had both been hurt by their partners (the hero physically - his wife abused him and their son) and were wary of trusting again. Besides romantic love, the heroine found a sense of belonging and community that was lovely to read about.

Outback Checklist:
Hero flies his own plane
School of the air
Horse riding lessons
Muster
Annual BBQ/Races for the entire community
Ride to the river to view all the flora and fauna
Hats
Weather - wet and dry

Well, this was an eye-opener. From the minute the hero and heroine see each other it is a sizzling sexual attraction. Honestly, contemporary writers should use this book’s sex scenes as a how-to-write-erotica without mentioning one major body part. Okay, one or two may have been mentioned, but the eroticism of the love scenes was marked more for the passion than the exchange of bodily fluids. I swear steam came off the screen of my computer. The inner nosy researcher in me wonders, was this written around an anniversary? Sadly the male counterpart of the writing team died a year after this was published.

Anyhoo, the heroine needs to escape because her circa 1985 coked up, stalker boyfriend won’t stop stalking her. This was published in 1998. I was curious about stalking as the hero actually identifies his behavior as such, and googling it looks like the US and Australia are pretty much in sync when it came to stalking laws which also means more than a few women had to die or be raped because of their lack. Sorry. Bad mood.

Anyhoo, we were off to 4 star start as despite the chemistry the heroine is simply interested in escaping an untenable situation, and the H needs a teacher for some of the children, including his son, on the station. He only takes the heroine on because he sees the devastation her ex is causing. He doesn’t want a Painted Up Wicked City Woman causing trouble with his men as she’s already causing trouble as he has a party in his pants every time he looks at her.

At the station, the H’s Aunt is a total stone cold bitch because the heroine is from the C-I-T-Y and all bad things like the H’s ex are from the C-I-T-Y. Plus the son is hostile and frightened.

The heroine takes the you are a Painted Up Wicked City Woman just so much then blows up at the H. Passion ensues, and the two embark on an affair. AN AFFAIR! Even more. Warning: she’s not a virgin, virginaholics. A star started dropping for me as the heroine seemed to jump into the affair a little too soon after her rant. I would have preferred if she had been a little feistier, a little longer, but the attraction was there in spades between the two from the gitgo. The H is little grumpy at first, but once they embark on the romance not so secret affair that everyone knows about he’s a gentleman and very protective.

Cutting to the chase, toss in an evil OW from a nearby station and an epic Texas Australian style comeuppance for more than one evil doer, and I am going to grudgingly give it four stars.

The Outback station life is well done. Not as well done as Margaret Way, but nice none the less.

The kids go to what is called the School of Air which means they participate electronically. Images from Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow kept coming to mind.

"Outback Heat" is the story of Angie and Taylor.

Our h Angie is running from a stalking ex and decides to apply for a job in an isolated Outback cattle station to escape.
However, When Taylor Maguire spots his kids' potential new teacher, he is hit with a torrent of lust and decides to judge her based on her appearance. He and his family have already suffered from a flighty city-girl ex, and he does not want to repeat the experience.
However Angie fights for her position, and due to a potential assault situation, Taylor ends up rescuing her, and whisking her away to his ranch.
There Angie struggles with her impetuous wards, a snooty aunt, a crazy OW while fighting the lust she has for Taylor. However, as the attraction blooms, they finally decide to give in..until the OW and her ex both try to invade their territory.
Can their new love stand such turbulence?

Honestly, I adored this book.
Sweet, scarred by the past hero and heroine who have intense passion and respect for one another. I liked how instead of going the typical pregnancy and betrayal way, in the second half, the hero and heroine actually had time to understand each other, and when potential problems rose, the hero and his community fought for the heroine. The ending and the son's monologue is amongst my favorites in this book.

Very well done.

Angie's prior lover had become a stalker and she couldn't find a way to make him leave her alone. Finally in a desperate move to get away from the stalker and to find a new life she applies for the job of governess in the outback. She knew that would take her away from danger. Unfortonately for her the family she is hoping to work for has a major prejudice against "city girls". She's hired on sufferance as the man who interviews her inadvertantly becomes involved in rescuing her from her stalker. He may despise city girls but he is unwillingly attracted to Angie.

Good book, enough angst and melodrama to make it interesting. Plenty of chemistry.

Uncomplicated in a nice way. The H is very attracted and interested in the h, and makes that clear numerous times. The OW and OM are cartoon villains.

So this was not my first time reading this story, but I must have read it before I joined Goodreads. I had it on my to read list but realized by the middle of chapter 1 that I had read it before. However, I did forget some details, and decided to read it again. It was a well done romance that didn’t always follow the typical script.

Stmargarets gives a fine review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Along with another great review by Vintage: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Honestly, I really do not have much to add as they covered it so well. There is lots of passion in the story.
Quickly:
Ages: the h, Angie is 27; the H, Taylor is 35

Marital status: The H was in an unhappy marriage, and is widowed with a 7 year old son. However, his city slicker wife has soured him on city slicker women, he believes our h fits that mold

Experience: The h is not a virgin or a whore. She ran a little wild as a teenager and had A boyfriend, then again with her stalker, coke fiend boyfriend more recently. Although she cut that off 7 months earlier. Not sure what the H’s experience was before his marriage but he was true to his wife for the duration of his awful marriage and has not had anyone since…the h is the first one to rev his motor.

Other Characters: The h is not well received by the H’s son at first, but after a breakthrough with his dad he warms up to the h. The h is not well received by the H’s aunt as she lumps her in with the likes of the H’s ex-wife(she comes around near the end). The h is also not received well by a 23 year old wannabe ow. She makes one visit and tries to stir up some things(she did the same with the H’s wife and got away with it). Then, she comes back at the end of the story to really cause trouble(it totally backfires on her) Other than that the h is well received by the outback community. They really become her family and she feels like she belongs for the first time.

Passion: As Vintage pointed out, there is no lack of passion between our 2 MC’s. They actually become secret lovers although most of those scenes are hinted at and 4 months in the outback move very quickly.

Abuse: The h, H, and even the son had their experiences with emotional and or physical abuse. This is not graphically depicted, but should be noted. The ex om was a stalker drug addict.

Ending: Loose ends are tied up, avowals of love are made, and promises for future expansion are hinted at. The story ends with thoughts from Hamish, the son. This was a nice way to end the story!

Heroine is a schoolteacher looking to relocate due to an ex that does not get the ex part, the stalking was real and it was frightening. I completely understood why she needed to run. Enter the H in look for a governess for his son. He initially doesnt want the h because she is hot af and she, like his ex wife, is a city girl. They part, both knowing and expecting her not getting the job, but that night when he calls the ex just broke into her house and the H came to rescue her, it was nice. What follows is a, for me, realistic courtship of two damaged people. The H is a widow, and his ex wife was emotionally and physically abusive of him and their son, so he does not want to do that again. The h started the book running from an abusive ex. And the heat it up there is the evil OW that has always wanted the H. She tries, but it fails soo beautifully and in the proces the H again shines so well in how he takes care of his woman. Very nice sweet story about a heavy subject. Both the H and h endured an abusive relationship but understandably only the h relationship gets paper time because back in those time men did not get abused. For a time where abuse towards men was not really acknowledge, Emma Darcy did a great job incorporating it in a story and still making the H alpha, sexy, manly and in control.

I didn't expect to enjoy this book, but I did :) The characters were strong and the relationships well developed. The plot provided a refreshing change to the usual Mills & Boon sort. Charming :)
