What is a true 1950s look, as opposed to a 1930s or 1940s look? This book aims to address that question by thoroughly surveying the development of graphic design over the course of the 20th century. Timelines for each decade highlight key moments, styles and movements, while profiles of thirty influential graphic designers three per decade are interspersed throughout the book.
Having no stake in graphic design it offered a lot to me with a limited knowledge on the evolution of graphic design and styles. Being in architecture it offered some crossover that I was looking for.
You could read this book two ways, cover to cover for a history lesson or by decade to make reference and inspire yourself. Both very valuable. I learned a lot and I'm keen to explore graphics, poster and type moreso than before.
I'll definitely return in reference to this book as it offers so much background information and designer inspirations that you can borrow from.
