«Quanti mesi, quanti anni ci vogliono perché un bambino diventi un ragazzo, e un ragazzo un uomo?». Ad Alain Poitaud, direttore appena trentaduenne di un settimanale di enorme successo, bastano poche ore per smettere di essere l’uomo che è stato e «diventare un altro». Accade in una piovosa sera di ottobre, allorché, tornando a casa per cambiarsi in vista di una cena in compagnia della moglie Jacqueline e della piccola corte di cui è solito circondarsi, trova ad aspettarlo davanti al portone un ispettore della Polizia giudiziaria. Poco dopo, al Quai des Orfèvres, si sentirà dire che Jacqueline ha ucciso la sorella minore, Adrienne, con un colpo di pistola, chiudendosi poi in un mutismo assoluto. La stampa ci metterà poco a scoprire che con Adrienne, per parecchi anni, Alain è andato a letto regolarmente, e parlerà di «dramma della gelosia», ma lui – l’uomo cinico, superficiale, mondano, il donnaiolo incallito sempre pronto a fare dell’ironia – comincerà a chiedersi quale sia stato il vero motivo di quel gesto. E mentre la polizia conduce la sua indagine, si interrogherà su quella giovane donna accondiscendente e discreta (tanto che fin dall’inizio l’ha chiamata Micetta), che ha sposato quasi per gioco, che gli è sempre stata accanto senza chiedere niente – ma, soprattutto, in un crescendo di smarrimento e di angoscia, si interrogherà su se stesso.

About the author

Georges Joseph Christian Simenon (1903 – 1989) was a Belgian writer. A prolific author who published nearly 500 novels and numerous short works, Simenon is best known as the creator of the fictional detective Jules Maigret.
Although he never resided in Belgium after 1922, he remained a Belgian citizen throughout his life.

Simenon was one of the most prolific writers of the twentieth century, capable of writing 60 to 80 pages per day. His oeuvre includes nearly 200 novels, over 150 novellas, several autobiographical works, numerous articles, and scores of pulp novels written under more than two dozen pseudonyms. Altogether, about 550 million copies of his works have been printed.

He is best known, however, for his 75 novels and 28 short stories featuring Commissaire Maigret. The first novel in the series, Pietr-le-Letton, appeared in 1931; the last one, Maigret et M. Charles, was published in 1972. The Maigret novels were translated into all major languages and several of them were turned into films and radio plays. Two television series (1960-63 and 1992-93) have been made in Great Britain.

During his "American" period, Simenon reached the height of his creative powers, and several novels of those years were inspired by the context in which they were written (Trois chambres à Manhattan (1946), Maigret à New York (1947), Maigret se fâche (1947)).

Simenon also wrote a large number of "psychological novels", such as La neige était sale (1948) or Le fils (1957), as well as several autobiographical works, in particular Je me souviens (1945), Pedigree (1948), Mémoires intimes (1981).

In 1966, Simenon was given the MWA's highest honor, the Grand Master Award.

In 2005 he was nominated for the title of De Grootste Belg (The Greatest Belgian). In the Flemish version he ended 77th place. In the Walloon version he ended 10th place.

A Simenon without Maigret. This fact is the first time that it has happened to me.
In this opus, there is no police investigation; we know from the start who shot and killed. We need to understand why Jacqueline remains silent about her circumstances and motivations. The character of Jacqueline is not very present in this novel; we instead follow her husband, Alain, a young, cynical upstart, empty, fickle, and frightened by loneliness. He is a big drinker and kisser; we see all his distress.
It's more an atmospheric novel than a police investigation that Simenon gives us. And speaking of atmosphere, it is heavy to the point of despair. It's a very human novel, and Simenon is skillful in conveying the characters' moods with a lot of simplicity and realism.

Един портрет на изгубената душа. На това как липсата на мечти и страст за живот убиват човешкия дух и захвърлят хората в едно безсмислено съществуване. Авторът ни представя цялото това падение чрез персонажа си Ален Поато и опита му да намери смисъл в съществуването си след ужасяващата трагедия, която се случва. Но този Ален не е единствен. По света бродят много Аленовци, които биха могли да се припознаят с героя от този роман, пропит с есенна тъга, алкохолни изпарения и мимолетни блянове по един друг, неизживян и по-добър живот.
Ален Поато и жена му Жаклин (наричана на галено Шатон, тоест Котенцето...още от тук се усеща силен френски вкус на романа...а и все пак действието се развива в Париж) живеят охолен живот, за който повечето хора могат само да мечтаят. Пищни апартаменти и вили, изобилие на пари, луксозни коли, изискани приеми... Какво повече биха могли да искат? Всъщност има едно нещо: щастие. Разкошният им свят се усеща като златна клетка, от която няма изход. Вероятно от скука и търсене на тръпката Ален се впуска в безброй повърхностни авантюри, които по никакъв начин не му помагат да израстне. Даже обратното, бавно унищожават вътрешния му мир, докато не го оставят като черупка без съдържание. Една от тези връзки е със сестрата на Жаклин Адриен. В тази авантюра няма любов, а по-скоро бягство от монотонността и търсене на някакъв нов вид интимност. Опит да принудят минаващото време да е по-поносимо.
Но когато Жаклин убива Адриен, Ален изпада в истински ступор. Заради него ли Шатон е погубила сестра си? От една страна изглежда сякаш съвестта му не го гложди, но от друга той видимо губи своя път и изпитва трудност да приеме новата жестока и самотна реалност.

Ecco però cosa succede quando tu, tutto preso dalla tua vita fuori dal tunnel, fra una cena e un doppio whisky, fra una donna e un'altra intercambiabili, non ti accorgi che le persone vanno avanti da tutt'altra parte senza di te, e che di te alla fine fanno tranquillamente a meno.

Chissà se Blanchet si era già guardato senza pietà. Ma no, non era mica stupido, suo cognato. Doveva sapere quant’era pericoloso.

Sebbene diversi, sia nei Maigret che nei romans durs, i meccanismi di Simenon sono più o meno sempre gli stessi, le storie funzionano sempre nello stesso modo. Ma funzionano, eccome che funzionano, e mi prendono sempre. Sia le storie che le atmosfere, Parigi autunnale o la Normandia delle nebbie e dei pescatori o la Costa Azzurra dei vacanzieri. Sapeva scrivere, e sapeva anche come funziona l'animo umano.

Lo stile di Simenon non mi ha mai convinto, trasuda intelligente disillusione e mi annoia un po'.
Però non posso che apprezzare la trama ben costruita, la precisa rappresentazione delle ipocrisie e della vacuità delle persone ed il finale perfetto.

The Prison of the title refers to a marriage, not an actual prison. Though, this being Simenon, perhaps he means it to refer to all marriages, not just the one in the title.

A cynical book, which I mean in an entirely good way, it can be summarized as "What's good for the goose is good for the gander, or maybe not.".

I’ve never met a Simenon I didn’t like. I wouldn’t call this my favourite of his books - I do prefer Maigret over the “psychologicals” - nevertheless I did derive a lot of pleasure out of reading it.

Judging from the title, and the fact that the main character’s wife goes to jail early in the piece, you expect it to perhaps revolve around the prison side of things. Not so. The book is about the husband and his doings and his relationships and so on. The prison, I suppose you are meant to infer, is his marriage, or his lifestyle, or his way of looking at the world. It’s a late-ish Simenon, set in the modern world of Paris in 1968. The main fellow leads a pretty swinging sort of a lifestyle which (you guess) Simenon is a bit ambivalent about, to say the least. I usually dread it when veteran novelists of a certain age try to make social comment on the mores of the young, because they can so often be a bit clueless on the detail. But Simenon handles it pretty well.

As always, atmosphere is everything with Simenon, and the vibe of late 60s Paris is evocatively drawn. It reminded me of one of those early 70s French New Wave movies by Eric Rohmer or Claude Chabrol.

I noir di Simenon vivono - schematicamente - della descrizione di un ambiente (quello del protagonista), dell’esplorazione della psicologia del protagonista, dell’ineluttabile costruirsi della conclusione. Qui l’ambiente è quello di un uomo che si guadagna da vivere grazie a una rivista che vende storie fatue e a sua volta vive in modo fatuo. Le sue convinzioni, rispetto alla stabilità raggiunta della sua vita, crollano quando la moglie uccide la propria sorella. Tutto funziona perfettamente salvo, a mio avviso, il finale, che non è pienamente giustificato dalle premesse. Il che per Simenon è strano.

In de tijd dat ik deze recensie tik, schreef Simenon een boek. En dat is wellicht het grootste bezwaar tegen dit verhaal: bordkarton. Op een of andere manier wil je zeker doorlezen, maar echt invoelen lukt niet. De hoofdpersoon Alain wordt met zichzelf geconfronteerd, dat is wel mooi. Maar het overtuigt een beetje, gewoon, een beetje.
Zou dit boek overigens in deze tijd geschreven zijn, dan zou heel woke Frankrijk en heel woke Nederland volledig uit zijn dak gaan. Elke vrouw in het verhaal zwicht voor de dronken, naar sigaretten stinkende Alain. Een vrouw is er om je lul in te legen en elke vrouw vervult die rol met verve. En heel BOB'end Nederland zou aan een rituele boekverbranding denken, want elke keer dat Alain het gaspedaal intrapt is hij minimaal onder invloed van tien dubbele whiskeys.
Maar ach, waar zeur ik over: het boek kostte me 25 cent. Leve de Kringloop (zo af en toe).

Another tale of amoral Parisiens drinking too much, sleeping around and ending up dead. In this instance Alain Poitaud, the editor (and rich owner) of a sleazy-but-arty magazine, “Toi”, is intercepted by a detective on his arrival home to his penthouse flat. The detective informs him that his wife has admitted shooting and killing her younger sister seemingly without motive. To escape life imprisonment “Kitten” would need to prove extenuating circumstances but she remains tight-lipped. As the various tawdry facts of the case become known, Alain resorts to driving about Paris, drinking a lot of whisky and reflecting on his relationships, naturally not forgetting to have sex with every woman he meets; why change the habits of a lifetime? I felt contaminated after reading this and needed a shower.

Ennesimo noir scritto alla perfezione nel modo in cui solo Simenon sa fare.
Protagonista silenziosa è la meravigliosa Parigi, con i suoi bistrot, i suoi palazzi e i suoi vicoli.
Al centro della storia c’è Alain, giovane benestante di trentadue anni, che si ritrova al centro di una faccenda inaspettata. Alain è un uomo cinico, realista, pragmatico, ipocrita come non mai. Ama il lusso, ama circondarsi di amici e far festa, ma contemporaneamente è completamente solo. In “La Prigione” seguiamo il suo flusso di pensiero, tormentato e inquieto, e di come quest’uomo si ritrovi a fare i conti con sè stesso, con la prigione che si è auto costruito intorno a lui.
Semplicemente memorabile, come sempre

Un dramma sconvolge la vita di Alain, una vita che scorre sempre uguale e diversa tra il lavoro e una strana vita familiare.

Una sera, rientrato a casa, trova un gruppo di agenti che gli comunicano quanto fatto dalla moglie.

Inizia così un romanzo che come tutti quelli di Simenon non riguardano solo la morte di una persona, ma il destino di un uomo.

Alain si trova a far i conti con se stesso, con la prigione che lui stesso ha costruito.

The Prison was first published as La Prison in 1968, and was translated into English by Lyn Moir. The man in prison is Alain Poitaud, an ex-journalist on an almost unbelievable trajectory of success. First the magazine he founded has become one of the most successful in France. The magazine, Toi, is designed to saturate the everyday reader with a surfeit of everyday facts and images, and the formula works. Another of Alain’s magazines looks as though it will be equally successful. Poitaud starts writing and recording songs, and again is successful. He is not only rich, but a star. But then his wife, his closest companion, is arrested for the murder of her sister, an ex-lover of Poitaud, as are most of the attractive women he comes in contact with. Poitard is not involved with the murder, which comes as a complete shock to him. Trying to understand what has happened, he discovers he does not know anything about his wife. She is just one of the many companions he is compelled to surround himself with. His wife and her sister, in fact, have preferred a relationship with someone who is not a star, one of his own staff members, and have become rivals. Slowly he realises he has no relationships with any of these people, no relationships at all. They are merely hangers on. And Poitaud has wanted it this way because of an enormous fear within himself, the driving power of his success, but which has produced only a simulacrum of friends and family. He has built himself a prison. Shattered by this discovery, Poitaud’s world collapses like a house of cards, and he kills himself. Perhaps an interesting reflection on Simenon’s own spectacular success, and failed marriages, this characterisation of Poitaud is yet unconvincing, and feels schematic and contrived, not developed as we have come to expect of Simenon.

This is an enjoyable, if somewhat routine and predictable psychological novel by the great Georges Simenon, and certainly not one of his best efforts. It dates from 1967, and his books from this late period are uneven in inspiration. In this one, the central character is Alain Poitaud, a magazine editor (a semi-salacious rag called "Toi" is his product), and he is married to a woman he calls Kitten. One October night he comes home and discovers to his shock that Kitten has murdered her sister, Adrienne, and has been taken into custody. Kitten freely admits that she is guilty, and she apologizes to Alain for putting him in an awkward position!

The complicating factor is that Alan had carried on an affair with Adrienne up until the year before the murder, so he immediately comes under scrutiny by the police and is endlessly grilled. Kitten refuses to see Alain before the trial, and he conducts a relentless examination of his marriage and where it went wrong. Ultimately we learn that another person has taken Alain's place as the lover of both Kitten and Adrienne, and so it turns out to be a crime of passion....just not the type of passion that one expects.

The denouement of the book is where it goes aground on the shore, because we can see the climax coming from many pages away. But this reader will not reveal what it is....for the whole point of a Simenon novel is to try to understand the internal workings of a tortured mind.

Tanto non mi piace Maigret, tanto adoro Simenon quando scrive d'altro.
Qui, un uomo di successo si trova a contemplare un delitto di cui lui è solo pedina marginale :la moglie ha appena ucciso sua sorella.
Al di là dello shock per il delitto, che il protagonista praticamente non prova, è lo shock del non essere il centro dell'azione, e soprattutto del rendersi conto di quanto sia dipendente dell'attenzione dell'altro che porterà il protagonista in una spirale di stupore e disperazione

Alain, trentaduenne direttore di un famoso giornale, sta tornando nel suo appartamento di Parigi, dove sua moglie lo starà aspettando per andare a cena in un ristorante con il solito gruppo di conoscenti.
Quando raggiunge l'ingresso del palazzo, però, ad attenderlo trova un giovane ispettore, che gli comunica una notizia inaspettata: sua moglie è stata arrestata per l'omicidio della sorella minore.

La prigione del titolo, nonostante ci sia stato un omicidio ed un arresto, non si riferisce a quella vera e propria in cui viene rinchiusa la colpevole; anzi, Jaqueline, nota come Micetta, ci viene mostrata pochissimo in tutto il romanzo, così come la vittima, perché tutta l'attenzione è concentrata su Alain.
La prigione, in questo caso, è il matrimonio dei due, e la vita stessa che l'uomo si era costruito intorno.
E come sempre Simenon eccelle nel descrivere la solitudine di un uomo che si guarda alle spalle e non si riconosce in nessun aspetto della sua vita.

Ha scelto la sua carriera soltanto per sfuggire ad un percorso già segnato e non diventare come suo padre?
Ha sposato Jaqueline soltanto perché era una ragazza senza troppe pretese e per avere sempre qualcuno al proprio fianco?
E se anche venisse a sapere precisamente la ragione che ha spinto sua moglie a compiere un atto simile, che differenza farebbe nella sua vita?

Piano piano, un doppio scotch alla volta, iniziamo a conoscere Alain, ed Alain comincia a conoscere sé stesso.
Purtroppo, però, la "grande rivelazione" del movente dell'omicidio è completamente senza forza e senza senso, ma anche il finale è parecchio scontato e lascia l'amaro in bocca.

Un inizio davvero interessante, che si stempera nella disperazione del protagonista e nelle sue prevedibili scelte.

Simenon sorprende, come sempre.
Nessun mistero da sviscerare: l’omicidio ha già un colpevole, Jacqueline, la sorella della vittima è rea confessa.
Il mistero si muove altrove, nella vita di Alain, il marito, e ancor meglio nei suoi pensieri.
Nella sua prigione.
Perché ad essere in prigione nella realtà è Micetta, la moglie di Alain, così come da lui soprannominata, ma di fatto nella prigione della sua stessa vita è Alain ad esserci finito.
Alain è all’apparenza un uomo di successo. Tutti lo conoscono, tutti lo ossequiano.
E beve. All’occorrenza anche parecchio.
Titolare di una rivista di successo la cui tiratura è tutta in salita, in realtà scoprirà nella solitudine che tutto ciò di cui si è attorniato finora, moglie, amanti, collaboratori, conoscenze importanti è tutto effimero, vacuo, inesistente.
Un viaggio interiore e impietoso. Fino alla fine

Typically enigmatic Simenon - there's no doubt who died, no doubt who pulled the trigger ... the question is why, and what are the consequences for 'the significant others'? We get a rich celebrity being deconstructed as the narrative unwinds - the question we're left asking is, is he the one in prison, has he constructed and elaborated a prison of sex, alcohol, luxury living which has stripped him of any real humanity? Or is this a deconstruction of marriages which have trapped several members of the cast in prisons of their own?

Particularly dismal, but captivating. A man's wife murders her sister (who also happens to be one of his many mistresses). While the title could literally refer to the place the wife is headed, it is a Simenon book after all, so it probably more intentionally points to the psychospiritual place the male protagonist finds himself: rich and famous and kowtowed to and yet perhaps really flailing in the void. This one has a gritty visceral end that worked for me.
