The Infidelity Pact

Rate this book
An ill-conceived pact between four L.A. housewives to each indulge in a year-long extramarital affair leads to freedom, revenge, social climbing, sex, drugs, and murder in this hilarious and biting solo debut by a coauthor of The Right Address and Wolves in Chic Clothing.
To address their general malaise, four privileged L.A. housewives each make a pact to have a year-long extramarital affair. Their husbands are declared off-limits and the friends agree to confide only in each other (the theory being that dalliances cause trouble in large part because word gets out). And so our ladies embark—two eagerly, one cautiously, and one very reluctantly—on perilous romantic paths that lead to all manner of adventure and intrigue. As the year progresses, secrets are revealed, betrayals pile up, desires are brought to light, lies are told, and each woman is forced to face up to the truth of who she is and the choices that have brought her here. When the women discover that a local gossip has been spying on their conversations and is threatening to reveal their secrets to the whole town, how far will they go to stop him? And how well do these friends really know each other anyway?
With a wry eye and an insider’s view of L.A.’s wealthy and occasionally desperate housewives, The Infidelity Pact is at once poignant and hilarious, a book that is sure to be talked about on both coasts—and everywhere in between.

This book had been on my "to read" list for a little while, so I finally decided to stop waiting to read it. I did read some of the reviews beforehand and I was forewarned when I saw that they weren't great. Still, the idea behind the book is a good one and I had high hopes. I will start by saying that what I disliked most was really the writing style itself. Ms. Karasyov writes like an amateur. Seriously, the writing was very child like, I thought. It wasn't necessarily the wording, as just how she would describe a scenario, or just the back and forth with, "Eliza said.", "Victoria said.", "Eliza responded." during a conversation, instead of just letting it run on like most writers do. She also went into tremendous detail (I'm talking paragraphs worth) to set the scene on food, hair color, what people were wearing. It was way over the top and I skipped most of it because it was entirely wasted space and irrelevant. She also had an annoying habit for interrupting every conversation in the beginning to describe something. For instance if two characters were talking about their cat, she'd stop the conversation and start a page long story about when they first adopted the cat. This happened over and over so that by the time you reached the end of a conversation, it had gone on for five pages. Thankfully this annoying habit seemed to have dissolved by the middle of the book. However, there were many other issues I had with this book.

First of all, there were too many characters, and they all came in at around the same time so that I couldn't remember who was who and finally I gave up and started a list with the character's names and who they were married to and who they were cheating with.

Additionally, the book had a lot of issues. There were typo's and grammatical errors that apparently everyone looking over the book missed. There was also a lot of conflicting writing as far as where one person was at a time, or what had just happened. I kept flipping back and forth to make sure I had read a previous page correctly only to see that the following page didn't go along with what was written before. I think even the author got confused and forgot what she was doing.

I also had issues with the characters. Most of them spoke as though they were children. A lot of what they said was unintelligent and something you would expect out of a teenager, not 30 year old women.

*Going forward there are spoilers listed. There aren't a lot and most of them you can figure out at the end of the first chapter anyway, but just an FYI.*

Leelee was also the biggest pain in the ass. I couldn't get over how she blamed her husband for everything that had ever gone wrong in her life. She couldn't accept responsibility and absolutely despised him because she hadn't married into money. Instead of getting a job, she decided to sit down and pity herself and her worthless husband (her words) throughout the entire book. She was also so naive in believing the guy she was cheating with would leave his life to be with her. I know a lot of women believe this, but there was something so absolutely irritating and childlike about her that it didn't at all surprise me that she didn't open her eyes to look at the whole picture. I'm glad that she didn't get to run off with the love of her life, but would have preferred if her husband had left her too.

The whole Anson plot I thought was just taking up space. At the end of the day, it had very little weight in the book. The women didn't change what they were doing because of it, they didn't seem entirely scared (and when they were supposed to be, it wasn't believable), and at the end of the book nothing came of it. The women decided something had to be done with Anson so that no one would ever find out about their pact, yet as it turns out, they all told their husbands anyway so who cares? While I liked the ending - as far as how it was thought out and written - I didn't believe it because why would so many people risk their own lives by killing, attempting to kill, hurting, or attempting to hurt Anson over something that was already out in the open anyway? It was just absurd. And the fact that the police wrote the whole thing off as an accident - I mean are these the stupidest police ever? Everyone in the neighborhood seems to know everything about each other, but no one noticed the five people at Anson's house that night? And the police weren't at all suspicious even with Anson's job and what he'd written in the paper lately? It was totally unbelievable that they didn't investigate it more.

I was also annoyed by how neatly everything wrapped up. All of the marriages survived except for the one that was doomed from the beginning anyway. I'm not sure that that would actually happen.

Although I read the book very quickly and was always curious to see what was going to happen next, at the end of the day, I feel gypped. This book had a lot of potential and in the hands of another writer it probably would have been a great one. Looking back now, it doesn't surprise me that the rating is so low.

It was an easy, light hearted, fun book, with an unexpected who-done-it twist. Just what I needed for a weekend getaway read.

Perhaps it was the format and because I was listening during my daily commute but I found it somewhat hard to follow all the characters and remember which wife and which husband and which lover belonged where.

I thought this was a fun little book that all wives who are married for a long time might fantasize about but not ever do. So this book makes you realize, wow maybe this was not the best idea or maybe it was, you have to read it and see.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills meets, well, the real housewives of any other reality show, in this tale of friendship, marriage, money, betrayal, and power.

I have to be honest; I almost fell asleep a few times while reading this. So, my advice would be to avoid this book if you’re lying in bed and not somewhere that will make you be actively awake.

I had to read a combination of the physical and audiobook to get through this.

I thought about DNFing this book once or twice, but I made it to the end.

I know this book was published in 2007, but the diet culture in this book was so toxic and harmful. It wasn’t mentioned a lot but just enough that it really bothered me. So, if body image is something you struggle with, just be prepared that this subject will be brought up while reading this book.

All the characters in this book were HORRIBLE. They were just awful. I know it was intentional, but still. All of the people in the story were insufferable.

Victoria Rand (married to Justin Coleman) - Victoria broke up Justin’s first marriage just so she could snag him for herself. She quickly realizes that she, in fact, didn’t want Justin; she just enjoyed playing the game and winning it by any means necessary. She soon finds herself in an unhappy marriage and, after putting her career on the back burner to raise her twin boys, is unsatisfied with her life. She therefore orchestrates the infidelity pact and pitches the idea to her best friends. Victoria is the more brash and forceful one in the group and can often be thought of as the “queen bee.”. She’s a very toxic friend/person who will do anything to get her way and doesn’t care who she takes down in the process. Victoria has also been hiding a huge secret from her friends. One that she would rather not come out.

Eliza Gallahue (married to Declan Gallahue) - Eliza who has a wonderful husband, two beautiful children, and an active career, is relatively happy with her life. However, her marriage has seemed to become stagnant, and while she still loves her husband dearly, she no longer feels that spark they once shared. Eliza was the most reluctant to partake in the infidelity pact, but with a little persuading and a happenstance run-in with an old possible flame (there was an attraction between Eliza and this man in the past, but things never progressed), she agreed to partake in it. She might have been the sweetest one of the bunch. She was often trying to be reasonable and deescalate situations. Eliza was a perpetual “good girl” even if she couldn’t see it.

Leslie “Leelee” Adams (married to Brad Adams) - Married life did not turn out how Leelee had hoped. When she married Brad, he was at the top of his game and was very wealthy, until he wasn’t. Early on in the marriage, Brad lost it all, and Leelee is finding it hard to cope. It's hard balancing an unhappy marriage while raising two young daughters. While younger, she thought she would marry senator and close friend Jack Porter, whom she still carries a torch for. After all, he was her first true love. This woman was transparent and dull. She needed a personality transplant or something. What a bore. Leelee lived with her head in the clouds and preferred a fabricated fairy tale over real life. She soon realizes that fantasies aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.

Helen Fairbanks (married to Wesley Fairbanks IV) - Wesley is 20 years Helen’s senior, but despite that, he treats her well and loves her dearly. They have one daughter together, and Wesley comes from a long line of money and titles. Despite that, things between the two have grown flat, and Helen doesn’t have any kind of bond with her daughter. She finds herself just going through the motions of everyday life. I feel like Helen was just confused and didn’t know what to do. I think perhaps after having married Wesley, she started to question why she had married someone significantly older than her and just wanted more excitement for herself. Her relationship with Wesley started with him cleaning up one of Helen’s messes, and she soon realizes that she will always need him to do that for her. Good thing he’s more than happy to.

Anson Larrabee – He’s a local gossip who uses information that he happens to overhear as leverage to get what he wants from other people. Anson will learn that playing games with others’ lives never ends well, and unfortunately for him, Anson will learn that lesson the hard way.

Not only were the characters awful, but there were too many of them. I had a hard time remembering who was married to whom and which children belonged to which couple. I even got confused with the affairs that were going on. I had to flip back and forth multiple times in order to keep things straight.

I enjoyed Carrie Karasyov's writing. It was easy to follow and flowed nicely. One of the issues I had was with the way conversations were written; there was a lot of “so and so said,” “so and so mentioned,” and “so and so asked.”. Most of the conversations didn’t flow naturally.

The other was the point of view. It is never clearly stated or made known whose point of view the chapters were being told from. Sometimes I felt as though it jumped around. I know some authors can make that work very well (you can tell that it’s intentional) without pulling the reader out of the story. That, unfortunately, isn’t the case with Karasyov. It was very jumbled and confusing.

Most of the chapters were relatively short. Which I appreciated. A few here and there were a bit longer than I liked, but that happens sometimes.

This is not a fast-paced book by any means. It starts off slow and takes a little while to get into. Even then, nothing super interesting happens until towards the end of the book. I will say that the middle of the book/second half of the book is much more entertaining than the beginning/first half of it.

The twist and ending (I will admit that I didn’t see them coming at all) were nicely done, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to save the story as a whole.

Overall, this was a light read and easy to get through. I don’t regret picking it up, but I’m not sure that I would recommend it to others.

TLDR: AN ENTERTAINING PREMISE FOR A PLOT THAT WAS UNFORTUNATELY EXECUTED POORLY!

As always, please remember that reading is subjective, and that’s what makes it so great. 😊

Wow. This story was full of the worst, most disgusting, most horrible, awful, ugly people I have ever encountered. I actually felt slimy every time I listened to this book, and my face was constantly pulled into a grimace of complete horror. Literally every sentence, whether narrative or character speech, was. Just. So. Vile!

One star for the ability to make me react so vehemently.
Would not recommend to anyone. Ugh.

What a weird book. The women were ridiculous caricatures of man hungry idiots, spoiled rich girls looking for fulfillment by cheating. The men weren’t much better. Wasn’t going to finish it but it is a short book and the ending was an interesting little twist.

This is not Anne Perry or James Lee Burke..but it is very entertaining. Appealing
to my shallow side. Can do without bad language, but the story has intrigue and
characters (who also have shallow sides) are well done.

I chose this audio tape from the library because it was a bright pink spot amongst a slew of black/brown audio tapes. Never again will I pick a book based on its cover.

In "Desperate Housewives" fashion, four women make a pact to be unfaithful to their husbands and agree to tell each other everything regarding their secrets. In their flawed thinking, affairs only last if you can talk about them to someone other than your husband. A neighbor with a baby monitor overhears and records all of the details of their love affairs and blackmails them. Enter ensuing drama, followed by the womens' enlightenment that their marriages and families were actually NOT dull and boring (*gasp!*) and that they had what they needed already right in front of them making this book predictable, typical, and boring.

It did little to keep me entertained during my 8-hour car trip.

So I started this thinking it would an interesting read, but I didn't finish it. The truth is that three of the four women had good husbands and they just couldn't find it in themselves to be satisfied and try to make it work with them. One was so worried about screwing things up that she didn't try; another was too selfish to see that she had the makings for happily-ever-after in her grasp if she could just see outside herself for a moment; and another just had no good excuse. Victoria was the only one who had legitimate reasons for wanting to step out on her husband and she should have just divorced him instead of trying to get even. About three-quarters of the way through the book I couldn't see how things were going to end nicely for any of them and just wanted to stop the drama. So I did. Sorry, Carrie...next time don't make your heroines such idiots.

This book was a fun book to read, and it was a lot deeper than I expected. Towards the end I did start to lose interest a little bit, and that is the only reason I give it four stars rather than five. I really enjoy this author's writing style, and the way she described her characters. Although I really didn't like Leelee or Victoria's characters (Leelee was too transparent, and Victoria was too bossy to her friends. Would actual women really put up with that?) I did appreciate certain aspects of every character. Regardless of the fact that cheating is bad, this was a good novel to really gain insight in why people do cheat. Although I am not a thirty year old woman, like the characters in this book, they weren't that difficult to relate to and anyone in their teens or up would enjoy this book.

On audio.
The only reason it got as high as it did was due to the ending. I liked the wrap-up and I didn't see it coming. But the rest of the book just never really caught my attention, and it seemed that there were several points in the story where the writing didn't hang together. One minute a character wasn't there, and the next she's part of the dialogue. What? I think I'll skip this author in the future.

I lost interest a few times, put the book down and am still pushing to reach the ending. The beginning spends so much time describing the characters lives and relationships with their husbands that when the story line picked up I needed a break. I haven't lost my interest entirely, so I will finish and re-write a proper review.

Very entertaining page turner that quickly builds into the plot and keeps going to the end. Not meant for those who desire depth of character and developement of plot, this is meant for the busy working mom who still wants to keep their reading passions alive. It was like watching reality TV, its so bad that its good.

Occasionally I dip into current 'chic lit" to see what I am missing. Not much. However, this little book does draw the shallow, self-centred characters fairly well, and sets up a mystery of who killed the local gossip columnist.
A surprise ending? A bit. In the end, the "girls" husbands come to their rescues. How charming is that!

Ugh. What's next? Michael Vick is gonna write a book on how to make money on dog-fighting?

This book didn't need to be written, or read.

I gave up 3 chapters in.

The only question in my mind is whether or not I should still attend a book club meeting for a book I hated and deliberately didn't finish.

Its a quick read. Nothing real deep but entertaining anyway. It a definite chick flick kind of book.
These wifes get bored with feeling unsexy and vow to cheat. The neighborhood gossip finds out and threatens to blackmail. The end was a little surprising but nothing to blow you away.
Good beach book. When you are bored and looking for a light gossip book.

I had a hard time with the concept of this book. So, while I was reading and being turned-off by the main characters, there was an additional annoying character in Anson Larrabee. However, I liked the writing style enough to stick with it. Even though I really couldn't relate to the main idea, the end was great.

It was really pretty good. By the same author as "The Right Address", it was a (small) step above the usual. The inprobable, but highly entertaining, plot also concerned a bit of a murder mystery. What I liked best was the references to life in wealthy L.A.

Chic lit about women who make a pact to cheat on their husbands (no, this is not a spoiler!), but everything works out OK in the end. Very few redeeming qualities, although it meant to be a hard-hitting critique of the hollywood lifestyle. Still, I enjoyed it.

I liked this book because it was an easy read with some slightly surprising happenings that wrap up the story. It starts slow and the characters include all the obligatory L.A. types, but it's great fluffy fun overall. And though it's a book about cheating, there isn't much focus on sex.

The ending is worth the entire book. Not that it's not good, it is, but a little slow motion for my taste, specially that i hate infidelity but somehow i felt pitty for them, not Eliza... i was like "how could u?" but it turned out okay!
But the ending was clever and kind of diabolic, luv it!
