About the author

Meir Shalev (Hebrew: מאיר שלו) was one of Israel’s most celebrated novelists. He received many awards for his work, including the National Jewish Book Award and Israel’s Brenner Prize, both for A Pigeon and a Boy.

A columnist for the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth, Shalev lived in Jerusalem and in northern Israel with his wife and children.

Read this a long time ago but did not mark it.
The Bible (old testament), has a huge influence on Meir Shalev. It is in all his books and he mentions episodes from the Bible in many of his articles in the paper. In this book , he visits various stories from the Bible and gives them his unique interpretation. I admit that I do not remember too many details but remember that I enjoyed reading it.

I'm a Shalev fan but somehow I missed this one. I was a bit disappointed - I was expecting much more sharpness, but this was pretty mild. Perhaps for the time it was written (35 years ago) this seemed like harsh critic, but I can't say any of Shalev's interpretations really shocked me. They all seem pretty logical from the text. Still, this is enjoyable to read and Shalev's Hebrew remains exquisite, three stars out of five.

Parce que j'avais adoré "Ma grand mère russe et son aspirateur américain " j'ai voulu retrouver l'univers de l'auteur. Ce livre là n'est ni un roman, ni un récit sur les souvenirs d'enfance, mais un agglomérat de chroniques sur les textes bibliques. J'ai essayé, j'en ai lu 5 sur 15 mais je n'ai pas suffisamment de références quant à l'ancien testament pour pouvoir apprécier. Bien sûr, on retrouve de temps en temps des saillies pleines d'humour, mais à moins d'être un érudit, ou au moins d'être de culture hébraïque, d'être imprégné des textes sur les territoires et les tribus, la lecture de ces chroniques reste trop souvent absconse pour les non initiés. Dommage, mais je ne me sens pas le courage de lire les milliers de pages de l'ancien testament pour pouvoir me sentir bien avec ce livre . Alors, ma note n'exprime peut être pas la valeur de ce texte mais correspond à mon ressenti.

Commentaires très littéraires et personnels sur des épisodes bien connus de l'histoire biblique... Intéressant, parfois drôle, parfois un peu polémique. Petits problèmes de traduction - c'est peut-être fidèle, mais pas très bien rédigé.

Grappig en intelligent. Politiek en religieus relevant. Kritisch op die weinig toepasbare zin van het woord dat het niks voor waar aanneemt of zonder argumenten afbreekt maar de in de bijbel naar voor gebrachte feiten onbevangen aanschouwt en becommentarieert.

DNF - nach 50+ Seiten.

Meine Mutter hatte mir dieses Buch mal empfohlen (sie sagte es sei recht interessant) und seitdem lag es bei mir rum. Tja, jetzt nicht mehr (ich hab's zu ihr zurückgelegt).
Ich kann einfach nichts damit anfangen, ich habe mich nie mit der Bibel befasst, ich habe keine Ahnungen, was diese ganzen Geschichten bedeuten, mir fliegen nur unendlich viele Namen um die Ohren und mein Hirn stellt auf Durchzug - ich kann mich gerade mal so noch an die ein oder anderen kritischen Kommentare bezüglich der Darstellung von Frauen erinnern dabei habe ich das Buch vor nichtmal 10 Minuten weg gelegt.
