From Nothing #1

Garron Park

Rate this book
Garron Park, where hope dies and no one ever gets ahead. Until… __

When Devon Sawyer desperately searches for his brother in the middle of the night, beaten and broken, he finds Maddox Kane instead. With his dad on his trail, he has no choice but to stand on his enemy’s doorstep and let Maddox help. Maddox has never seen Devon this vulnerable. Living in Garron’s trailer park means families dole out discipline on the regular and violence is a part of life, but something about how far Jim Sawyer takes it this time has Maddox unnerved. Rivals in motocross, work, and life itself, they’re forced to work together for one night. Perspectives change and their friction morphs into something unexpected. Hatred turns to lust. Tensions switch from hostile to aroused. While their competitiveness remains, their dynamic shifts. Their acceptance is anything but graceful. Two guys who come from nothing, with very little to look forward to, find themselves craving each other in new and fiery ways. Reluctantly. ___

WHAT TO
GARRON PARK is book one (1) of two (2) in the From Nothing series. Potential to expand later, but for now remains a duology. They must be read in order as book 2 is a continuation of book 1 featuring the same main characters. It is an MM romance with explicit spicy times, foul language, and two main guys who are pretty down on their luck.

✦ i am here yet again to hate on another new, very loved and popular MM romance book. all of my GR friends who loved this, please look away. xoxo
✦ all of the struggles these mcs apparently have had living in their shitty circumstances sure didn't make them grow the fuck up even a little. i swear, you ain't ever catching my twenty five year old ass acting the way these two did. you mean to tell me they were supposed to be twenty five years old??? they were sixteen at most. childish and juvenile.
✦ all of their fights were stupid, illogical and nonsensical. the way they talked was annoying more than anything. these characters simply did not seem like real people.
✦ the way they finally got into each other or whatever..? y'all please tell me how many times has someone actually caught another person while they're horny/masturbating. i swear, that only happens in porn and books. the fact that it's still done so often just screams lazy writing to me. their entire brains got rewired after those incidents, or whatever you wanna call them, and suddenly they were super horny for each other. absolute nonsense. the progression from hate to hate/lust was not done well at all.
✦ i liked the setting and the whole set up of the book - underdog characters, rivals to lovers, trailer parks, motocross, money struggles, etc, but the lack of proper relationship and character development fucking murdered it all for me. i will not be reading the second book.

“You know what I want out of life, Devon?” He glared at me and I struggled to get out of his hold, wondering how the fuck I beat him tonight when he had that kind of grip. “Someone to match my anger. A worthy opponent, hot sex, a simple life with my brother, motocross, and a douchebag with a big mouth.” He smacked me right in the mouth, cementing his point. “Someone who makes me agree to get on my knees and put his cock down my throat after beating me in a fucking fight I should have won.”

i honestly didn't expect to cry during some of the confessions Maddox and Devon had, but i loved how their confessions were so... aggressive bc it just fits with their overall dynamic. 😩

one second later:

no bc Ian and Mickey from Shameless is the closest i can think of to how i would describe Maddox and Dev's dynamic and i LOVE that.

the book had me invested from beginning to end. what i loved most of all was how, even once Maddox and Devon finally got together (or even acknowledged their feelings), they're still the same when it comes to fighting or arguing. even once they started seeing the other in a new light, i like how they didn't suddenly have a 180 switch of "we're gonna be nice to each other from now on" bc imo, it didn't fit with who they were, as individual characters or their dynamic together, so i liked the consistency of that. i also loved Xavi and Nate (i could sense a potential story?? best friends to lovers? 👀).

“Because you’re a piece of shit asshole from Garron Park with a loud mouth and the ability to piss me off like none other…and you’re exactly what I want. What I need.”

And they say romance is dead. Lmao.

I had a blast with Garron Park. The beginning started rough but it quickly picked up afterwards. It was never a dull moment with Devon and Maddox.

Maddox and Devon are what you would expect for an enemies-to-lovers trope. They hate each other with passion since childhood. Their piece of 💩 fathers turned them against each other and since then they have been rivals. They are competitive when it comes to motocross, girls and everything else. Always got to one up each other and see who has the biggest 🍆. Fighting is their love language. It's the one thing that is a constant in their lives. Everything else is awful for them. They live in a trailer park and come from poverty. It also doesn't help that their parents are just sperm donors. Devon and Maddox were practically raised by their brothers, Xavi and Nate (whom I stan together). So, them, hating each other is their "normal".

Until you add attraction to the equation.

Then the fighting and fucking begins. The throat grabbing and passionate fucking intensified their thirst for each other.

But, their love story was more than just lust and hate. In their own weird way they protected and looked out for one another. Maddox may claim to hate the shit out of Devon but his actions say otherwise. That goof has the biggest heart and Devon slowly begins to realize it. So, much so that Maddox, his biggest rival, becomes Devon's safe haven. Who would have thought?

There is after all a thin line between love and hate, and that seems to be the case for our boys from Garron Park.

Fists and fucking, may be their future but it is clear that these dipshits love each other in their own way. I loved Maddox and Devon. I also adored their brothers, Xavi and Nate. Nordika is teasing us about their book on IG. So, I know they are getting their own book sometime in the future. I am excited to read Maddy and Dev's second book: Lot 62 next. 🫶

I love discovering new authors, especially Canadian authors who have a special place in my heart. Nordika is very sweet and interactive with her readers. I highly recommend you check out Garron Park, you will not be disappointed.

Wow!!! It has been a while since I have read a story where the love interests were so addicted to one another in such a primal way. To say that Devon and Maddox have a combative relationship is to put it lightly. Their main form of communication is with their fists. They both have been fighting one another with their words and bodies for years and watching the slow unraveling of their true feelings for one another made for such an addicting read.

Devon and Maddox have insane chemistry. Whether they are pulling punches or slinging words their desire to dominate one another never wavers. After a harrowing experience that threatens Devon's life, their dynamic instantly changes. Maddox and Devon's mutual need to own, devour and protect each other leads to such a fascinating relationship that I was completely enraptured by.

Overall I loved this story, loved the writing style, and loved the relationship between Devon and Maddox. I loved their process of understanding why they needed the other in their life, just in a way they never expected.

A frenzy of adrenaline mingled with rage as I tasted the tang of my blood against my tongue. This battle had been brewing since we were kids, and this might not have been our first fight, but it was the first one where I legitimately wanted to kill him. Rip him apart. Remove him from my life once and for all.

Wow. This was different. Refreshingly so. A real enemies-to-lovers (or as the author liked to call it: rivals to still-rivals-but-also-lovers). Talk about intense!

Maddox and Devon (25) are low-lifes, white trailer park trash dealt a shitty hand in life with not much prospect of ever escaping. The only good things in their lives are their respective big brothers who always have their backs and motocross, winning on the track. The only constant in their lives is their rivalry, their hatred for one another, their fights, the dripping blood and bruises.

Neither of them EVER saw coming that this hatred could turn into lust. And more. While still punching their fists in each others faces *lol

“Why? Why risk it all for me?”
“Because.”
“Because?”
“Because…you’re mine or some shit.”

What got me scratching my head quite a lot were the brothers (28), tho. Nate and Xavi were awfully close for best friends if you ask me. It was def admirable that they were even able to stay so tight with their younger brothers constantly fighting. But man these two were in their brothers’ business all the time. Considering their ages. There really was no privacy, no secrets. It was kind of hilarious *lmfao

What I really liked about this book and made so different was that these boys were okay with living the life in Garron Park. Getting by with what they had and the simple things they could afford. But happy in their way still.

I had no idea where we planned to get the money […], but fuck it, Devon mentioned a dream, and I didn’t mind stalking it like a nightmare to make it come true.

Awww 🫠 And they say, romance is dead.

the way I am obsessed with devon and maddox is on another level. I love these crazy, asshole, dirtbags sm omfg. they were so angry, volatile, sizzling hot, overprotective, and possessive with each other, which ofc I’m going to eat up every single time😮‍💨 (even though in real life their relationship would be immediately jail aha haa.)

as they say, “there is a thin line between love and hate” and boy do these two embody that like no other. their dynamic and connection with each other is so addicting and their never ending sparring was so entertaining. the little glimpses of vulnerability we got from maddox were so precious and the love they have for each other is truly intoxicating.🥹

devon and maddox were so fucking hot together, LORD!!!!!!🥵 i mean hand-necklaces anybody?!?!?

i love their brothers—nate and xavi— so much and they brought much needed comedic relief through this very raw, gritty, and intense book at times. very curious about those two besties and I cannot wait for their book to come out.🤭

devon’s dad is the actual worst and such a vile and shitty human-being. I want him to literally disappear into thin air so bad. 😡

all in all, i loved this book sm and can’t wait to jump into book 2 to get more of dev and maddox, their brothers, and how they are going to deal with being in a relationship, living together, and eliminating devon’s godawful dad from their life forever.

I loved Devon and Maddox. Their dynamic was one I haven't really read before but it worked for them.

Maddox is actually really funny, I love how he antagonises Devon, especially when he drags things out to get Devon to outright ask. The end with the new trailer made me laugh so much.

I also really liked how the growing emotions and feelings between the pair were shown through their actions more than their words, they didn't feel like the typical couple who say 'I love you' but they definitely show it.

I'm intrigued for the next book because I definitely want to read more about them, but it does feel like everything could have been wrapped up in one book, so I'm interested to see where the story goes.

”I wanted him so bad, but I wanted to punch him in the face for making me want him this badly.”

I liked this book but I didn’t love it much to my dismay initially HOWEVER I seem to be unable to return this book. I have reread it multiple times and I can’t get enough of Devon and Maddox and now I find myself really excited that we’re getting another book of them. 💗

I absolutely LOVED Devon and Maddox’s train wreck of a relationship. They had that “I’ll burn the world down for you” mixed with obsessive/possessive vibes and I was all about it. All that aggression and “hatred” they had towards each other turned into passion, lust and need and I really enjoyed how even after they became more, they still taunted and fought each other. They were super competitive in all areas of their lives not just motocross and I loved the fact they were always trying to outdo each other. And the sex scenes were super hot 🥵 because these two were fucking and fighting each other the entire time. The content warnings mentioned “hand necklaces” and I was like wtf is that? Well duh Megan. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Hand Necklaces are hands around each other’s throats and holy hell, these two are constantly throwing each other against things and choking the life out of each other. It was just so hot 🥵 because at times I fully believed they didn’t know if they’d rather fuck or kill each other 😂. Also, despite them being on the outs for so many years, I loved how they were able to actually communicate with each other despite not wanting to and when they’d let their guards down temporarily? Swoon 🥰 Of course after being vulnerable with each other they’d go back to beating each other up but I loved all of it.

I was obsessed with this book for the first 60% or so and couldn’t put it down but then I found my attention span waning. I never lost interest in Maddox, Devon or their love/hate relationship but I wasn’t fully connecting with everything else going on in this world. I would have liked to see more Motocross since it appeared to be a big theme but then was rarely shown. I felt like the issues they had with their parents were quickly overcome and it was just a bit unbelievable how everything happened. I really don’t understand why or how this is going to be a duology because this ended with a solid HFN and there was no real angst or conflict that needed to be solved that couldn’t have been put in an epilogue. I just wish this had ended in a way that made me impatient to get my hands on the next one instead of not really giving a fuck. I’ll read it but I’m not dying for it and I wish that I was. 😔

“He was trailer trash in its finest form, so why the hell did I find it so hot? Why was it so exciting to be this close to him? Why was my body pressing into his, wanting to be closer, trying to feel more of him?

Where did hate end and desire begin? Why were they merging? Mingling?”

gb

To say that I had a good time reading Garron Park would be an understatement - I had a GREAT time reading it! Starting off right with the punches, Maddox and Devon have been sworn rivals since they were ten years old - off the motor track and on it - they've been fierce competitors in literally everything that crosses their path - enemies to the brink of their core. It doesn't hurt that their older brothers are the best of friends - it doesn't hurt that their fathers are abusive assholes - it does hurt that one night Devon gets a beating worse than wear from his father - and as he reluctantly tends to his wounds as he begrudgingly allows him to spend a night in his bed, it does hurt Maddox --- more than he thought it would...

a

“Maddox?” It was barely a whisper this time, and he wasn’t even fully lucid. I barely moved, not wanting to hear whatever he was about to say. “Thanks.”

Oh, fuck him.”

I loved Maddox - well, I loved Devon too, but there was something about Maddox I really connected with. With his awakening - his newfound realization that he may be attracted to Devon more so than just wanting to claw his eyes out was so precious to watch - not to mention how overly protective he suddenly became of him, how vulnerable he allowed himself to be with him, the comforting nature that overwhelmed him, the sudden urge to talk about their feelings that were whirling inside of him *shocking!* 😆😆

“We were just two useless idiots, sitting on a couch in the middle of nowhere, trying not to look at each other while we confessed our darkest secrets.”

He just wanted to keep him by his side, possessively so - he didn't hesitate to make shady deals just to ensure his safety, how far he went to keep his father from ever hurting him again, with such fierce rage. He couldn't even understand where this desire to hurt anyone to dare lay a finger on Devon (besides him, of course!) was coming from or how suddenly he cared so much for him! Only, “You touch him again, I’ll fucking kill you.” was all that mattered! 🩶🩶 Maddox didn't want much from life - he just knew that he wanted Devon to share it with him.

“I swallowed, loving this and hating it at the same time. This thing was a mess, he was right about that, but maybe messy was what worked for us.”

I really felt awful for Devon - as much as Maddox had it rough, he had it a lot worse. But, I really liked that while he didn't resist the temptation so much, it was his uncertainty that Maddox could actually feel so much for him, so openly express his attraction for him that made him such a likable guy. Even if he didn't get riled up as easily as Maddox, he still fought his feelings with his punches - haha, the amount of times they went at it each other was laughable, but with such a satisfying ending. 🥰🥰

“We’re helping them,” Xavi said again.

“Fine. But don’t expect anything to change. I still hate that fucker.”

Xavi smirked. “Tension isn’t all about hate, Madd.”

What the fuck did that mean?”

Xavi and Nate - the meddling brothers from Hell - scheming match-makers and the best of buds - I had a hoot with their banter and comments, how they worked tirelessly to pit their younger brothers together in order for them to hash it out. But, methinks, could there be something more lurking beneath the surface of their friendship??? 👀👀 Either way, they were such a fun reprieve to their younger brothers' plight!

“For once, we worked together. Mutual satisfaction was the prize, but this goddamn connection was the price…and I was willing to pay it over and over again.”

Their love language may be 'actions speak louder than words' resorting to fist fights instead of cuddles and hugs, but it works so well for them! And the sex scenes were top-tier HAWT! They were so filthy, so dirty, so loud, so foul, and fueled by just getting it out of their system! Every possible way conceivable - they acted upon it in their sexual exploration - on your knees, on your back, from behind - they literally didn't hold back in their restraints!

“Devon wet his lips, drawing my attention. “Your body is allowed to feel something your heart doesn’t,” he said like some bullshit philosopher.

My heart wanted to hurt him. My head wanted to hate him. My body just straight-up wanted him.

“Fuck you, Devon.” I breathed hard, leaning forward, touching my forehead to his.”

atw4e

But, that first kiss! ABSOLUTE FAVORITE! The pining - the pulling - the desire - it was so so well done - I read it twice, because I loved that moment right before they kiss, before they act upon the pull - so much more feeling of conflicting want than the sex scenes could bring for me! ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 As much as they fought and hated each other with their punches and jabs and words, the intensity in which they fought and resisted their attraction was the magic of this book! ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹 That they still so vehemently refused to acknowledge that what was stirring between them was something more made me smile and laugh and chuckle at their idiocy. 😊😊

“Don’t tell anyone I’m doing this. And don’t read into it.”

“We were doing everything extremely backward, and it felt good anyway. Sex before hugging. Enemies before…whatever we were—still enemies but sorta fuck buddies slash lovers. Hate before lust. It was all churned up and out of order, but it felt right. Honest.”

United-Favorite-Blackmamba-max-1mb

My only grievance would be with the editing - it started off really strong, but after a painfully obvious error, it dimmed my enjoyment significantly. I was still very much invested in their relationship, but the sudden transitional cuts of chapters threw me off. Maybe it was intentional, to emphasize the grittiness and rawness of their situation, but it just felt off-kilter. 😞😞 And it may be a personal nit-pick of mine, but sentences starting with 'Yeah,' and 'Sure', even to show the train of thought, never sits well with me.

“I wanted him, respected him, hated him, needed him, and was damn near addicted to him, but was that love? More like obsession.”

But, it was still a very enjoyable read - definitely took enemies to lovers to the next level, for sure! And makes me super psyched for the sequel and see what awaits these boys at Lot 62! 🩵🩵

Garron Park
By: Nordika Night

💫Infinite Stars!💫

The hill I will happily die on- that this is the best enemies to lovers book out there. If you do not love them- don’t come for me, I don’t care. I love them enough for EVERYONE!

Garron Park is book one in the From Nothing series by Nordika Night. This book takes you on quite the journey. Maddox and Devon are sworn enemies. This MM romance is an enemies to lovers,GFY/bi-awakening novel.

I’ve made it no secret that Maddox and Devon are my favorite book characters. I love these two so much. I love the possessiveness, the jealousy, the fight and do I love the spicy scenes 🔥🔥 The way these two tear each other down, it’s a whole experience. It’s so real and raw at the same time.

Every time I pick this up just to get a quote, I end up re-reading it. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve read this book now. I’ve lost count. I can tell you-that I’ll read it a million more times.

Originally-I did almost passed on this one because of what someone said about it. I’m so glad I gave it a chance because it became my absolute FAVORITE BOOK EVER!
It just goes to show you that just because someone else didn’t love it, doesn’t mean it can’t be your everything….. Because I’m completely obsessed with Maddox and Devon and their meddlesome brothers. The chemistry burning between these two is magical. The are so obsessed and possessive over each other. Plus, this has all the hand necklaces you could hope for. 🫠

This is a fast-paced read and it kept me engaged. The atmosphere of the story just pulled me right in. It’s so intriguing, it just captures you. From fighting to protecting to the spicy parts. This is a work of art. Hats off to you Nordika Night.

Make sure you read the trigger warnings provided by the author before reading.

I will forever highly recommend this one. I finally got all my feral sisters to read it and happy to report that they loved it as well 🩵🩵

"Apart from the few years we were friends during childhood, I’d never felt anything more than hatred, jealousy, competitiveness, rivalry, and frustration toward him. Attraction wasn’t even on the radar, and arousal wasn’t even close."

Nordika Night does it again! Garron Park is another brilliant MM romance that has left me desperate for the second book in the "From Nothing" duology. This is an enemies to lovers story (my absolute favourite) around my boys Maddox and Devon, full of first times, trailer park found-family loyalties and heartbreak, fist fights and betrayal. And steam. So much hate-to-something-more hotness.

"It was such a strange thing to loathe and lust after him equally. How was I supposed to make sense of that? Especially when it came out of nowhere."

And whilst Garron Park is only book 1, it does have a HFN and we are assured that this divine series does end in a HEA.....eventually!

I re-read this duet last week and oh my word it was just as good as the last time - in fact it just gets better and better. Love these boys so hard 🖤.

Edit: the special edition cover (not shown here) is DIVINE!

"We thrived on aggression and competition, but we ran on something that felt a lot like love. Harsh love. Something volatile and right."

Well, it was fun hearing the good things.

It was okay, really easy to get into. cool. I loved the enemies to lovers trope it was done so well. The hate they had for each other was good, it was what I expected. Their relationship was perfect and I loved how the possesive/jealousy trope. Some scenes were really intense and clearly showed how perfect they are for each other. And their relationship never changed till the end loved that.

But that was it.

Even though this was entertaining, I didn’t feel entirely hooked by their story. No matter how good their dynamic is, there’s nothing else that move the story. Not enough depth on the side characters, family backgrounds, Garron as a town, and the overall storyline lack of atmosphere and context. Abusive dad, but did not focus in more detail except horrifying scenes with lack of motive. Brothers, but it felt like they were written just to feel in the blanks. No connection. Climax is forced. Motocross theme was just…sigh, I’m disappointed in that so let’s not talk about it. Let’s just say, this book solemnly focus on their dynamic, WHICH I don’t have any issue if it doesn’t feel too empty in the middle. I got bored reading a couple chapters. It got interesting by 70% although.

Relationship-wise, perfect. Storyline and depth, meh. Motocross theme, fucking disappointing.

I know I’ve read from mutuals’ review about the big motocross theme, and I’ve expected it. Still, I’m sick of being jebaited by motocross/motoGP themes, when the story never actually focused on it. As a big fan, it hurts you know.

I have an inkling that book #2 will be better but I don’t feel like reading it.

*mournful sigh* So much potential in that premise that just wasn't realized/was outright butchered.

I really really liked the setting, the trailer park, and both MCs the underdogs fighting for a place in their little world. The motocross plays next to zero part in the book so that was a bit of a let-down (I was hoping for something more expansive, something like Foxhole Court's Exy games, but no).

I didn't understand the intense antagonism Devon and Maddox were supposed to be having. Maybe if they were fifteen, but twenty-five? Their hatred seemed baseless and unnecessary. I kind of enjoyed myself reading about them for a while, but the last third of the book is a clusterfuck and I finally lost my patience because their supposed conflicts and fights and juvenile outbursts made zero sense and were getting obnoxious.

Not going to read the second book 😔 I understand some people like this kind of dynamic and sometimes I do too, but not if it's written in this half-assed, Wattpad-like way.

"So, no, Devon, I don’t know what the fuck this is,” he sneered. “But I wanna tear you down while lifting you up. I wanna protect you and kill you at the same time. I want to resent you for how you make me feel, but then I want to resent myself even more for letting you affect me.”
So don’t fucking push me to know what label to slap on this . I don’t know the damn answer. I just want to hate you, have you, fuck you, and fight with you. That’s it. That’s what this is for me.”

I know that many of you liked this book, but og my god, the mcs who are 25 years old, act as if they were 16-18, i swear.

Devon and Mad hate each other, they've been rivals for years, and there's really no motive, reason, background or explanation of why. It's just always been that way. And now, hate becomes desire, but they still hit each other. They still fight and yell at each other. Oh and now they have sex. That's the new thing. And that's it.

There are little vulnerable moments where Mad heals Devon, and that was nice to read. But pages later Mad hits Devon where he's injured, and it's like wtf. There is no background or individual development of the characters, more than the basics stuff they tell us. So, I didn't like the mcs and i didn't understand why they were together. There is no love story here, friends. Just a hate you now i wanto to make out with you.

So, i'm not going to read the next one.

Time of cerebral death: 70&, but I skimmed through the end because I am a little bit of a sucker for punishment I guess?

This was a mess. I mean, at least it has a quality: it's entertaining. Not purposefully, I mean. But I laughed so much and so hard that honestly, it was just nice sipping my tea while giggling.
Devon and Maddox are rivals. They behave like they're both 15, but apparently, they're 25. They have constant tantrums, more frequently than my toddler does. They speak in constant exclamation marks! Like that! Because they are all over the place! Also, I am wondering if this author ever met a real human man, or any human being for what matters. Because it's not like those mm books where the MCs behave like teenage girls. These two guys just behaved like children? 😂 I swear at one point I was about to shout IF YOU CAN'T BE MATURE TALKING ABOUT SEX THEN YOU SHOULDN'T BE HAVING IT at my Kindle. Because yes, they fuck, but dear God, what a pain. It's a constant push and pull of stupid, silly, childish rivalry and Maddox mostly not getting why his dick gets hard or how two men could possibly have sex together. I mean, try to get to 25 without knowing these things, I suppose. Anyway, Maddox goes through his "I DON'T GET WHY I WANT TO PUNCH YOU BUT ALSO MY DICK IS HARD! AAAAAA! WHY DO BOYS PULL GIRLS' PIGTAILS AT THE PLAYGROUND? AAAAAA!" and after, Devon decides it's just time for him to bend over and see if Maddox takes the hint. He does. Ofc the sex is mindbending even if I wouldn't trust with my arsehole a guy who's not even sure how his dick manages to get hard, but whatever, this is romance. And up till now, I was kinda invested in these two idiots? Because they were pathetic, they were silly, and their dialogue was hilarious. I was about to give this book 2 stars just because it kept me company on a rather gloomy day.
BUT. What bothered me the most, more than the abovementioned MCs and their inane dynamic, was the setting they were in. Garron Park was supposed to be a trailer park in a desolate little town in Buttfuck, North America. These people are supposed to be living tough lives. And while we were told how tough their life was, I never truly saw it.
See, I kept comparing this setting to Shameless, for some reason. As a European, I suppose that's my standard of American white trash in fiction. One thing Shameless does well is characters: Fiona, Lip and Ian, especially, are very young when the series starts, but they act and think like adults, because they have grown so quickly. Here, instead, you have two adults (25 YOs!!!) behaving like little children, even when they're supposed to have lived through hardship all their lives, taking care of their mothers (one is ill, the other is an addict), constantly battling against abusive fathers (one, who tries multiple time TO KILL his own son). I mean, how? The author tried to be raw, and gritty, and edgy in describing their living conditions and to infuse some sort of squalor to their surroundings, but it failed miserably. It was you know, fake. Empty. Shallow. And without that, nothing else in the book made much sense.

Anyway. Don't think I will bother with this author again, but hey.
bye now

⭐︎ 4.5 Stars Rounded Up! ⭐︎

A deliciously good enemies-to-lovers romance. One of the best I've read in awhile that gets the 'enemies' part down really well.

It's like authors think 'enemies-to-lovers' and think it should be some misunderstandings at first that get cleared up fast or they argue a few times and that's it or they 'hate' that they're so attracted to them and are actually masking up their feelings with pretend 'hate.'

Like all of that...isn't enemies-to-lovers.

Enemies need to hate each other. Like deeply loathe each other at first. Hate the sight of each other kind of thing. And they don't get into the lovers part easily and seamlessly. It's a longer road and it's paved with letting go of preconceived notions and letting walls down and so on.

Maddox and Devon encapsulate true enemies so beautifully.

They've hated each other since they were kids. About 10 years old. Funnily enough, they were friends before that, then their fathers pitted them against each other and they never let go of that hatred.

15 years later at 25 and they're still pretty immature with each other. They get in constant fights - this opens with them in a physical fight with each other - and rile each other up all the time. Or more, Devon riles Maddox up and the usually quiet guy gets pulled into his web and can't help but respond to him.

There's just something about the other that brings out their anger with each other.

And they both have fairly shitty lives overall. They've grown up in the same trailer park, Garron Park, their whole lives. Both set of parents are not good. But Devon's father, especially, is horrible.

He's always beat on Devon and his older brother, Nate. Maddox and his older brother, Xavi, have had to deal with it sometimes too from their deadbeat, junkie father, so he's never felt overly sympathetic for Devon.

But one night when Devon shows up on his doorstep looking for his older brother - because while these two are enemies, Nate and Xavi are best friends - very badly beaten, it changing everything for these two enemies.

As Maddox can't help but feel sympathy for him as he takes care of Devon and patches him up, Devon can't help but stirrings of attraction when they are forced to share a bed to together in Maddox's cramped trailer bedroom. Maddox isn't far behind in the surprise attraction.

And just because they two are feeling that attraction, doesn't mean they're stopping the hate...and even as things progress, they're still pretty combative with each other and aren't afraid to fight each other, still.

These two have a rough sort of love, but it's there. We get to the root of their hate more too. How Devon is a deeply insecure person underneath all his bravado and feels Maddox is a much better person than him and Maddox mainly hates how smug Devon always is and how he acts like he's better than Maddox.

But these two start to peal back layers, a little bit at a time, as they progress in their relationship. They're very hard fought for because these are two stubborn men who suck at communication and are better showing their feelings through action. And they don't know how to communicate in a healthy way - and who can blame them? With how they've grown up.

All these two men really know is fighting in some form or another. Before each other, the only really good example of love they had was from their respective brothers. Devon's mother doesn't seem so bad, but she has mental health issues that make it hard to be there for her sons. And Maddox's mother is usually a wined out, pain pill popping mess, so there's that.

So the only effective communication these men have is through...fighting. Whether it be with words or fists. Getting them to lower their defenses for more than two seconds with each other is a feat in and of itself.

I did give .5. off because I wasn't 100% on board with them still physically fighting each other once they were well into relationship territory. And while I love the biting banter and them still having that love-hate pull, I do wish we'd gotten more of the love by the end of this. They're totally feeling it, but they don't express it to each other often enough for my liking.

They're both so hard and prickly that I wanted them to be the safe harbor they come to to let that go and being a little more soft with each other. I kept expecting that dynamic to come and it didn't 100% get there.

They had those moments...at times. But they still were largely communicating through grudging confessions and harsh words. I wanted a little more of the softness by the end. Which we kinda got and kinda didn't. I hope by the end of this duology that they at least stop the physical fights? I know they both said that that's just them and that's kinda what they love about each other and all, but...idk, I want them to grow a bit? To not need to throw a punch at each other when they're angry all the time?

I'd love if they just lost that desire as they grew more in love and still liked to spar verbally on ocassion. I just don't think it's best, in the long run, for them to always punch each other when angry. Or show their worry or feelings through fighting verbally with each other instead of telling the other how they really feel.

But anyway, that was a small bother overall in the grand scheme of the book. I still, overall, loved this, and I can't wait for the next installment, to see their relationship deepen even further.

I will definitely be on the lookout for the second book. I can't wait!

Second read through on audio: ahhhh loved these two just as much on audio the second time as reading the first time. They are so amazing and highly recommend!

I have seen so much about this duology lately and I love a good enemies-to-lovers so thought I’d give it a try. I’m sooo glad I did! If you’re looking for a true enemies-to-lovers where their tension and frustration with each other doesn’t just magically go away after their first night together then you need to read this book!

Maddox and Devon are absolutely crazy together. They hate each other with an incredible passion that slowly turns into love but never truly goes away. I loved their dynamic so much. It was completely them and made sense with the lives they have lived and the things they have gone through. They wouldn’t be them without the fighting and competitiveness and passion to outdo the other. Especially since it is 100% equal. One isn’t more powerful or manipulating the other. Now in real life I wouldn’t like what’s going on but we can forgive a little in fiction thankfully.

But saying this they still had their sweet moments too with their possessiveness of one another. My friend told me they were super cute which seemed weird to me but after reading their story I 100% agree.

I loved that this book was not predictable. I had no idea where this story was going most of the time and I was just along for the crazy ride. This was a fantastic story and I definitely recommend if you’re looking for something with a little more angst and grit. I cannot wait to start book 2!

I didn’t expect to love this book as much as I did, but Maddox and Devon fought their way into my heart. Literally.

As someone who grew up in a lower-class environment with parallels to Maddox and Devon's circumstances, albeit less aggressive, I appreciated that neither of them felt an overwhelming urge to escape their surroundings entirely. Instead, their desire was to transcend the challenges within that environment, seeking improvement and growth without abandoning their roots. Living, regardless of the location, was possible as long as they could be happy and do it in peace.

The intertwining of love and aggression is a complex and passionate dynamic. Despite initially mistaking their feelings for hatred, the way they fought to protect one another was easily the most romantic aspect of the story.

It's surprising this kind of dark romance could be so hot, particularly during the fighting and aggression. Who would have thought that a fist to the face could be one of my biggest turn ons this year? And they say romance is dead.

"While faced with Devon Sawyer, holding onto rationality was damn near impossible. I didn't even bother trying anymore."

Maddox Kane has always had one goal in mind.
Beat Devon Sawyer.
The bane of his existence. And the person that gets him riled up the most.
They have always been rivals. Always pushed each other's buttons.
But one night when Devon has nowhere else to go, Maddox is the one he turns to.
And that one night changes everything.
Devon Sawyer and Maddox Kane.
Rivals. Enemies. Maybe something more?

"I know you. I know how to beat you, how to get in your head, how to piss you off, and how to knock you down. Don't doubt me, Kane."

I am so happy I picked this up after such a long time!
I am loving the motorcross vibes, the competition, the banter!
I mean I would read a book just Maddox and Devon literally going at each other (with words people! Get your mind out of the gutter… though I would not complain about the other version as well 😏😏)

"Yeah, I still fucking hated the guy, but now I hated him for not only the shit he did to me, but for how he was confusing the hell out of my head. Like… I couldn't get him out of my head."

Maddox and Devon are the definition of enemies to lovers while legit staying enemies somehow and I did not know how much I needed that until I read this.
I mean yeah you have enemies to lovers, classic. But add in a bit of banter and competitiveness in sport… I mean there are bets people!! (yes I have issues… we move on).
Banter? Check. Spice? Check. Comebacks? Check. Obsessed? I am thank you very much.

"I just want to hate you, have you, fuck you, and fight with you. That's it. That's what this is for me."

Maddox and Devon are my new boyfriends. I love them so much. They remind me of Mickey and Ian from Shameless sometimes. Harsh, violent, primal love. I loved how much they are possessives, omg this was so good.
I look forward for the next book.
And also, I hope we will get a book for their brothers, Xavi and Nate because you can’t make me believe they did nothing in that one bed they shared together. I need to know.

“Holy shit, Devon. How are you this stupid?” he sneered at me.

“Yeah, I did a dumb thing, but I did it for you.”

“Stop taking on my burdens!”

“I can’t!” he screamed at me. “They’re my burdens now, too!” He smacked his hands to the side of my face, holding my head straight so I couldn’t look away. “Because I can’t live without you anymore. I want you here, with me, for as long as I can fucking have you. Because…” He paused, and my heart blew up in my chest. “Because you’re a piece of shit asshole from Garron Park with a loud mouth and the ability to piss me off like none other…and you’re exactly what I want. What I need.”

My heart exploded harder and my ribs blew up next. Thunder cracked with the force of my emotions, and lightning struck from the electricity sparking between us. We were generating this storm, and it was growing in strength. “Maddox…”

“So be pissed at me all you want, Devon. But I’d do it again. I’d do it every fucking time because I’m falling for you, you dumb fuck.”

Toxic love

3.25 stars

Enemies to lovers

Maddox and Devon grew up in the same trailer park. Their brothers are best friends, yet these two can't stand each other. That is until one night changes their lives.

I usually don't like toxic relationships, but somehow, this one worked. I will say these two came off younger than their age. It felt like they were 18/19 rather than 25. They just seem immature and barely putting their lives together. Granted, it doesn't seem like they had easy ones. I'm glad there will be more because the HFN wasn't really satisfying. I want to see where this relationship goes.
