Never thought she’d pay any price to defeat her greatest enemy, but getting the information she needs to do it will cost her more than she imagined.
The self-assured Were princess managed to save her friends from the sinister magical group called the Jeweled Claw, but now she’s become their target. That’s fine by her, since the ex-mate she's vowed to kill has become its new leader.
There’s just one problem.
Thanks to her deal with the Bone Reader, she has to figure out how to turn someone into a Were, like herself. If she fails, she has no hope of defeating Damien and the Claw. But finding clues to completing her task means returning somewhere that carries her most traumatic memories, a place she has avoided for centuries. And when she finds the one being who can answer her questions, things get even more confusing. Why is she so drawn to him?
Determined to do whatever it takes to fulfill her vow and protect her city, Never is running out of time. If she can’t accomplish everything by the deadline on her deal, she won’t live to see the result of her failure.
I neither disliked it nor particularly liked it, so it gets a 3 star / C / meh rating from me.
I think it has all the pieces of a solid UF, but they just weren't gelling in a way that was compelling ... so it felt a little paint-by-number to me. Also, for all her snarling about being a badass, Never is kind of a doormat - everyone just walks all over her, from her bosses, to rando enforcers, to the bad guys, and she never does anything about it. Given all that, I don't understand why she doesn't just disappear with the people she cares about it. The Magikai seem determined to blame her for the Jeweled Claw, which is hilariously stupid, given the organization's entire goal is to take out the Magikai. The Magikai claims to have wiped them out, but surprise, dipshits: they didn't. So that's on them. Never isn't responsible in any way, and frankly the smartest plan would be to get out of Dodge, let these two go at each other, and then pop up to eliminate the survivors. Easy-peasy, assholes gone, now have a party to celebrate being free from the Magikai who threaten you into complying with their ownership. Because that's how they treat Never: like they own her. Like she owes them. Fuck off with that. I don't need to know anything else about them to know that I'd burn that place down with napalm. But Never doesn't. She acts like she's is being clever while she does everything they say.
There are also weird inconsistencies. Like, Damien and the Jeweled Claw. Are these people as brainless as a roll of toilet paper, or do they actually not hear Damien's cray-cray ... and how did they miss that he killed their old boss? It wasn't subtle. And he also talks about it with them around. So like, doesn't seem to be a secret. His behavior as a whole is super inconsistent - all book 1, he kept putting her in situations where it was reasonably possible she'd die...and then insisting it isn't what it seems, he loves her, he can explain. Look pal, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me, fool me ... what, like 19 times now? And shame on me for reading.
Other things are inconsistent too. We're told about magical contracts - they are done to set the terms in stone, unchangeable and unbreakable by either side. Never has one with the Magikai boss saying she'll come train this new Were beginning in X amount of time. But this book, he says he's revoking that timeline and she has to do it immediately. Wut? What the actual fuck is the point of a magical contract if he can do that? May as well wipe your ass with the thing, given how useless it is.
I like the characters. I like the found family elements (though they get a little OTT with the witches acting like teeny-boppers). But as I said, the good things aren't gelling, and so it is starting to feel tedious.
This second installment starts immediately after the first, with a brief recap of prior events. In NEVER AGAIN, Never is on a mission with witches Aggie and Chrys and Hugh (her trusty new vampire coven historian and overseer) to seek out how to create a Were as Never’s payment to the Bone Reader, as well as rid herself of her ties to Damien.
Never is impulsive and often rash, but she becomes a better person through her broadening group of friends. There are some interesting revelations about Never’s past, and some closure for her future as well.
I loved the clever chapter titles, and the writing was smooth and effortlessly drew me into the story. I’ll definitely continue reading this unexpectedly good series!
You know that feeling when a character grabs your attention? When you become so vested in them that you need to breathe the same air they do? Well, Never is THAT character! I fell under her spell when I picked up the first book in the series. Strike that, I fell under the author's spell....see, Ms Reames took me on a wild ride, a ride so awesome, I never want to end! (Nope, pun not intended...)
After making a deal with the Bone Reader, Never has the unenviable task of finding an ancient ritual, one of conversion. Not a normal conversion to currency, or weight , no siree, she needs to find the "magical" method of how to make another of her kind! But she's armed and ready, she has a select few real cool friends along for the ride, reluctantly so, but their skills should aid in her search. I don't know who's cooler, Todd, Lynx, Aggie or Nadia. Obviously, Never is the coolest but together, these characters add so much flavour to this delectable meal, my taste buds explode in pleasure. Then we meet Chrys, who I knew I'd love immediately! Aggie and Chrys together, well that's sheer delight! And Hugh, oh my word do I adore his unflappable persona! Yep, every character grows on me, every character develops before my eyes.
Oh my! That scene where Never meets the Nahum was....was.... so emotional! My heart broke for Never. But likewise, THAT meeting and battle with Damien, I was seriously gulping. Both Nahum and Damien are so laudable, there's something about both that calls to me, well, to Never as well, but I was bouncing my toes up and down in sheer adrenaline! Sheer exhilaration at the twists! This author's use of words, her plot and incredible world building, gets me tangled up, pretty much like a chain that's so tangled it's almost impossible to undo. Heck, Ms Reames manages to do both, she tangled me in knots and then lovingly, patiently, undoes me, much like her storytelling. So vivid, so alive are her characters and world building, it's a feat to keep reminding myself I'm not actually IN the story! And good golly, does she keep the unexpected, well, shatteringly so! Nothing prepared me for what happened, nothing prepared me for the consequences Never faced, nothing will prepare me for my next journey with Never and her crew. All I do know is that I'm relishing every second along the way.
After defeating the previous leader of the Jeweled Claw, Never has more on her plate than ever. She still has that pesky contract she signed with herself to get rid of Damien, she has to find a ritual lost to time and turn a new Were and after all that she will need to train Ever for the Magikai. With Damien (who is definitely not himself) hot on her heels, Never and her family have to travel to the island where she was held captive to begin her search for the ritual and conclude her deal with the Bone Reader. Never is discovering that she enjoys the company of others much more than she thought. She has really gone all in for the few who have changed her mind, even offering her home when she leaves to train Ever. She's learning to lean on friends just when she will need them the most. We learn more about her time with the Collectors and Never had to deal with some horrible things. As we learn more about her past, you get a deeper understanding of why she has been a loner and pushed people away. I love all of her family and get a kick out of Aggie. She's so sweet and innocent. Damien is in a not so slow downward spiral and is really ratcheting up the crazy. I can't believe Never doesn't give in to the temptation to just smack him! (Go Never!) There is no shortage of action in this book either! With Damien heading the Claw and chasing after Never, there are some nail biting moments that will have you holding your breath! Never makes some pretty epic escapes with the help of Chrys! And it’s more than just fighting and battling the bad guys. Never had to battle with her inner demons as well. The twists and turns will have you so wrapped up as well. There were so many things I absolutely did not see coming and never would have in a million years. The way this book ends I am ready to dive into the next one already!

Never is being hunted by the Jeweled Claw, now led by her ex, Damian. After the battle in the previous book where Never and her friends defeated them, she has a limited time to get rid of Damian before she must start training the new were intuit, Ever. To get help from the Bone Reader, she agrees to attempt to make another Were. With the help of witches Aggie and Chrys as well as the vampire Hugh (who is willing to be turned from vampire to were), she sets out to the area she never wants to go to again. There is a lot of Never’s background brought up, some horrible memories. There is also the growing feeling of family between Never and her friends. The search for the information to create a were leads from the island she was imprisoned on to another island with a dragon and pixies, such a great combination. There is a lot of action, some mystery, magic, humour, and romance. This book captured my attention before I even started it and I loved every word.
Brilliant addition to the series, this book has Never working to several deadlines. Complete the Bone Reader’s bargain, to do it she has to go back to the one place she never ever wanted to see again just to find clues on how to create a new Were.
She has until Halloween to finish all of her tasks because if she doesn’t kill Damien it’s her life on the line. Just to make matters more complicated she has to find this lost knowledge and attempt to make the new Were before she tries to kill Damien. Otherwise any attempt at Damien is magically guaranteed to fail. It’s probably why she’s not concerned about the deadline the Magikai are holdingover her to train Ever, the junior intuitive were from Colombia. After all she won’t have to face consequences if she’s already dead.
Fingers crossed that additional books will have answers because I have so many questions! It doesn’t hurt that I’m completely hooked.
A strong second book in a series with a great, strong main character. I love Never’s sass, badassness, and also the vulnerability she’s beginning to embrace as she accepts that she truly has built a new family for herself. Having to face down some very deep emotionally scarring memories in this novel, my heart aches for Never and yet, I also truly admired how she had pushed past those events to become a strong and compassionate person. Never has high standards for herself, those with whom she chooses to surround herself, and the way she collects interesting characters makes this series a lot of fun to read… I mean this book has a dragon who hoards books. How can you not love that?
Action, battles, adventure, romance, magic, mystery! Never again was such an epic second novel in the never series! Silas does a great job jumping into the story without to much recap, while making sure everyone stays caught up on the details. The details of the story are worked out and paced so well, without rushing minute details or the battle scenes!
This book also concluded a big section of the story, while also making us excited for the next book in the series!
Thought book one was good? Well wait till you read this second book cause it is even better! An epic read full of action, adventure, battles, magic and romance set in an incredible world with incredible characters. Never finds herself the new target of her ex Damian and the jewelled claw but hopes with the assistance of the Bone Reader and friends and family she hopes to defeat them once and for all. It’s a fantastic read, gripping, enthralling and very addictive and I look forward to book three.
I am enjoying this series, the ragtag group of misfit supernaturals that have become like family to Never, her constant search for Damien and to destroy the evil in the world. The Bone Reader, the Shadow Smoke Guy, all unique characters, and especially their slow reveal of information to Never, a gift or at a price higher than she thought she was willing to give. Hugh is definitely growing on me, and Addie is best friend material for sure. There were a few twists I did not expect, but that is what made it interesting.
I was so happy that there was not any chapters of recapping and it just picked right up from the end of book one! So many authors do that.. frustrating.
I am not usually one for this trope but this book was so good! I also know it can be difficult to have a great book two after a great book one well freaking amazing now I love these characters!
I would like to thank Silas for the Ebook and note that all of my thoughts/opinions are completely my own.
I really enjoyed this book. Never again picks up where Never left off. In this book, Never and her friends go on a quest to find answers about how is can defeat Damien. In doing so, they have to go on a distant journey where they meet new enemies and make new friends. Never also faces her past during this journey. This also gives you more insight into her character. I am really looking forward to the continuation of the story.
I received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The second book in the Shrifter Vengeance series is even better than the first. Never finds herself the target of the Jeweled claw which is run by her ex Damien who she has vowed to kill. She enlists the help of the Bone Reader, and her family of witches, shifters, and vampires to help take out the claw and defeat its leader. I couldn’t put this book down and was sad to turn the last page! I can’t wait for the next one!
WOW - just wow! I thought book 1 was awesome, but this one was even better! Smooth transition from book one to book 2; well balanced pace! Characters are well developed, continued world-building and the action is intense! So much creativity from a talented author who knows how to keep you thoroughly engaged from page one to the very last - I'm so grateful to have had the chance to read both books now and can't wait to devour book 3!!
this was a strong sequel in the Shifter Vengeance series, it had a great feel to it. The storyline worked well overall and the characters did everything that I hoping for. It was written perfectly and I'm glad I got to read this.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book pics up exactly where book one left off. Never managed saving her friends. And now the magical group The Jeweled Claw is after her. Revisiting a lot of past trauma. She is a werewolf who had a deal with the bone reader. She has to figure out how to turn someone into a were just like her.
This book picks up right where the first book ‘Never’ finished. I really enjoy the world that Silas Reames has created. The characters are interesting and the story is well paced. With the info dropped at the end of the book I can’t wait to read more in this series!
I enjoyed book 1, but book 2 was even better. I love how the characters have been built on and the story has evolved. I felt the writing style had clicked/found its way forward and highly recommend reading book 2.
I was surprised by how much I loved this book and the first one in the series. I had so many things that stood out that I was highlighting a ton!!! Love the humor the action and the characters!!! on to the next book!!!
Never is amazing. This is such a new take on Were’s. The witchling, the vampire, the bears, kitties and The Dragon!!! I can’t wait to read the next book!
Never is at it again! When will this were finally find her revenge and find some peace. This book starts off after the events of Never so it is recommended to start there. Never is such a mood! She kicks ass and takes names and doesn’t let anyone tell her how she needs to be. She is such an inspiring character. And the twists that happened are so much bigger than I ever expected! Everything I thought would happen for picked up, twirled around and thrown so far into the distance. And I loved every second of it. This is a great book for someone who likes lovers to enemies, found family, unlikely friendships, badass FMC, revenge plot, sworn off relationship, afraid to commit, "if I can’t have you, nobody will", anti-hero and shifters/witches/vampire characters.
