I came from east of the mighty Mississippi and rolled into Iowa with thoughts of flat land, lots of corn fields, and very few signs of civilization— and that was all I saw for the first hour in the state. Then, out of nowhere, the signs start popping up: “University of Iowa, Next Right.” Once I was in town, there it was, on the banks of the Iowa River, the University of Iowa.
The University of Iowa provides a first-class education, as well as an opportunity to grow as a person. The University offers so many options for education, it’s almost ridiculous. Not only does UI provide many ways for students to learn in the classroom, there are many ways to learn outside of the classroom, as well. Almost every department in the college provides some way for students to get involved in their field of study outside of the classroom.
Outside the state of Iowa, the University often gets pushed to the back burner when students are looking at colleges. However, the UI is traditionally ranked highly, especially in regional studies of the best universities. If you decide to come to UI, prepare for a challenging academic work load, but also prepare to have some of the most fun times of your life.
The UI is not a perfect place—there are several things that need to be improved, which are detailed throughout this book. However, the pros outweigh the cons at Iowa; if you come to the University for four (or more) amazing years, the experience will be quite memorable.
