Three men in a two man escape pod does not make for a happy crew. In Stephen Baxter’s “The Jonah Man” a third wheel looks like he’s headed for an early and violent exit when an unexpected discovery changes things. “Meeting The Author” seemed like a great idea for young Timmy but when his juvenile review is less than favorable and his mother’s even less so, the ever-smiling children’s author Harold Mealing starts haunting Timmy’s dreams. A terrifying tale from Ramsey Campbell. Monte is re-imagining classic films, like changing actors using digital avatars and colorizing them when he starts hearing of bizarre deaths of other editors. In “Twitch Technicolor” by Kim Newman it seems someone, or something, objects to this. Lyle Hopwood takes us to a future reminiscent of The World Inside by Silverberg, where Maiasa’s curiosity about “The Outside Door” very nearly gets her killed, while William King’s future of the dead surviving as uploads or holographic memories seems much closer than it did then, in “Visiting The Dead”. Rudy Rucker & Marc Laidlaw combine to give us another freaky tale of stoned Californians confronting higher mathematics and dimensional intrusions in “Chaos Surfari”, where Zep’s software upgrade to his surfboard was stolen tech and even Cthulhu might be out to get him. Good issue.
