I can’t imagine a large audience for Sin, Sun and Suburbia. It would most appeal to residents of the Las Vegas Valley (I am one,) and yet, most people don’t read much anymore, so that narrows the audience. I first saw the book in an older edition with a different cover. When I decided to purchase it, the newer edition with a much, more enticing cover, was offered. Naturally, I took the revised book, not realizing it was out of date by over a decade. I did enjoy much of the book, especially the chapters devoted to the development of the suburban areas of Summerlin, Henderson, and North Las Vegas, where I live in a subdivision that is discussed in the book. So, as a resident, I found a lot of the book enlightening. But there was also a lot of discussion that was best left to scholars, such as road development, the evolution of the public transit system, and use of federal lands. Those were only peripherally interesting to me, and I skimmed through much of those paragraphs. Sadly, as stated, the book is outdated, so it works mostly as a history text. And therein lies its faults. It reads like a history textbook, rather than an engaging account of the Vegas Valley, past and present. I was both entertained and disappointed.
