Millions of people practice some form of yoga. Yet the original purpose of Yoga, as a path to inner freedom and enlightenment, is embodied by only a few students in the West. Yoga Wisdom introduces this growing market to the endangered mental and spiritual disciplines of this ancient philosophy for living. From Yoga's origins and how it evolved into many schools, to the moral and esoteric principles that unite them all, here is the perfect primer on Yoga and its authentic practice.
Georg A. Feuerstein was an Indologist and, according to his associate Ken Wilber, among the foremost Westerns scholar-practitioners of yoga. After doing his postgraduate research at Durham University in England, he moved to the United States, eventually settling in Canada with his wife and sometime co-author Brenda.
What a treat to listen to the audio version narrated by Georg Feuerstein! I've obviously been mispronouncing his name for more than a decade...but then so did my professors. This is a terrific introduction to yoga philosophy. For a more in-depth treatment, see his other works. I've read his translation of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras several times as Feuerstein's commentary adds an invaluable element. In Yoga Wisdom, I find his clarification on the levels of samadhi and kaivalya most helpful. The work is divided into two lectures of just over an hour each. The whole audio book takes only 2:38:30. Short enough yet dense enough to warrant multiple listens.
Interesting audio book. It starts with some great music and a chant. The second part is definitely more interesting than the first part. There is also a great discussion of Chakras. Most of it is common knowledge about Yoga (at least it was to me)and I do not think that they are as buried as the author insinuates. Those of us who practice Yoga know the Yoga wisdom, but I guess there many of us who do not ingrate it into our daily practice. This is a good book if you are interested in yoga at all.
This book has tons of great tips and information to get the most from practicing true yoga (and meditation). I have listened to this book multiple times and I am sure I'll listen to it again in the future.
