Beautiful Nightmares #4

Temper the Flame

Rate this book
You don’t tempt a dragon unless you’re willing to pay the price. Powerful, merciless creatures, they revel in their dominance over us mortals. I’ve heard whispers that Fuoco, leader of the Fire Syndicate’s dragon clan, is the most brutal of them all. Arrogant and ruthless, he has no qualms about reducing lawbreakers to ashes.

I never wanted to break the law, but when my father grows ill, I risk everything by sneaking into Lord Fuoco’s enchanted apple orchard. The last thing I expect is to come face to face with the dragon lord himself. I brace myself to be incinerated. But Fuoco’s glittering gaze burns with possession.

It turns out dragons dream of their fated mates—and Fuoco thinks I’m his. And once a dragon decides to claim you, they won’t be dissuaded. Anxious to return to my father, I do what any desperate man would do—I get on my knees and beg for the dragon’s mercy.

But on my knees is exactly where Fuoco wants me. The dragon lord makes me a deal: if I live in his castle and warm his bed, he’ll make sure my father survives. With my father’s life hanging in the balance, I don’t have much choice. Yet as I get to know Fuoco, I realize there’s more to him than his harsh exterior. Maybe there’s a chance I can thaw his icy heart and save my father in the process. Or maybe I’m playing with fire…

"Dragons hoard treasure. They covet glittering, shiny things. But they reserve all their avarice for their beloved, fated mates. And woe betide the fool who steps between a dragon and his most precious treasure."

Lord of the Fire Syndicate, Fuoco has been waiting FOREVER to find his selsara. He finally finds his mate Beau in the village nearby but Beau is reluctant to let the ancient dragon into his bed and his heart. Fuoco is determined to woo and keep Beau forever.

“I’m dripping for you, selsara,” I purr. “Touch me. Accept me. Allow me to be yours.”

Temper the Flame had a pretty decent plot to go with the romance between Fuoco and Beau that offered action and suspense when the two of them weren't exploring their new relationship. Fuoco was completely enraptured with Beau and I loved his possessive nature. He was also such a puddle of goo with Beau which contrasted with the fiery being the rest of the world saw. Beau was kind and sweet and I loved the way he slowly integrated himself into Fuoco's world.

This was steamy and fun and I really enjoyed both characters and can't wait for a certain pixie's story!

Fuoco & Beau

Rating: 3.8 ⭐

- Beauty and the Beast Retelling
- Dragon / Human
- Fated Mates
- Baker / Dragon Lord
- First times
- Hoards 💎

Okay, so I wasn't ready for this but it definitely sucked me in and made me smile. I'm already a sucker for a good retelling but add dragons and magic on top of that, YES PLEASE! Now, this is loosely retold so do not expect it be the same format exactly as the original story, it's not. I haven't read the other books in the series but I will be now, especially since the prior characters were mentioned in this book and their individual syndicates sounded interesting.

Fuoco was so lonely even in a castle full of people and creatures. The dragon has been ruling the Fire Syndicate for centuries while waiting for his soulmate, his selsara. He is misunderstood by the humans he rules over and has taken to keeping away from them since they fear him just from the way he looks. Instead, he has the enforcers go into the towns since their looks fit in better, the lower dragon families tend to be smaller and can't shift.

Beau is a struggling baker just trying to help his sick dad and maintain his livelihood. He has known that he is gay for a long time but hasn't told anyone, not even his father or his mother before she passed. Of course, parents just know but that's beside the point. As the bad luck keeps piling onto Beau, from shady people/enforcers around him and with his father's health further declining, he makes a decision to get some magic apples from Lord Fuoco's orchard, even though it's forbidden and punishable by death. Little did he know that when he gets discovered in that orchard by Fuoco himself, that his world was about to change drastically.

This is a possessive, mainly Fuoco, loving and steamy relationship. Fuoco would do anything to make Beau happy even if he makes some huge mistakes along the way in courting him. There are a few places where Beau is mad at Fuoco, rightfully so, but he doesn't really stay mad more than a few minutes which seems unrealistic even with being fated. I could understand the conflicting emotions but he did give in too easily sometimes, but when he put his foot down, he would put Fuoco in his place.

There is deception among Fuoco's ranks which must be dealt with to save his selsara and the people he rules over. This is a sweet, action packed, steamy fairytale of book with a little angst, not much, which includes a sassy little pixie that made me cackle.

MM Beauty and the beast retelling with dragon shifters and 🐓 piercings? That’s all it took for me to be convinced.

I left my expectations at bay, but it was still pretty mid for me.

I was expecting more warming up and angst not an insta-love, so that was a bummer.

The story and the characters were inconsistent and 2 dimensional.

The beast, aka Fuoco was too idolized. He was this virtuous, misunderstood nice guy, not the imperfect beast who needs to improve. There was no place left for character development. All he really needed was a little nudge from the other MMC.

Beau was a true damsel in distress, and being totally out of character. He goes from hating dragons to a dragon’s bed in like 2 days. He only remembers his purpose of saving his village between blowjobs and dinners, while completely forgetting about his dreams and desires in the total devotion to Fuoco.
He’s also a virgin, but manages to take that D that he couldn’t close his fingers around in diameter effortlessly. Right. Then he “gets wet”? I hate when authors try to pull this in an MM romance. Girl, it doesn’t work like that. 💀While we could argue on the details, and exceptions, one thing we can’t argue on is anal mucus being sexy during a rim job. 💀💀 Icky.

Since this is based on the Disney version, I was anticipating an abundance of companions, and we only got one, if we count the 2 dimensional fairy, whose sole purpose was… idk… to make fruity jokes?

Sometimes I go for a nap with a throw blanket, then I’m getting cold, bur I’m too lazy to get my comforter from under me or to reach for it from the other end of the bed, so I just continue to nap uncomfortably…
That’s pretty much why I didn’t DNF this one.

I saw that this was a miss for other’s who read the series, so I’ll probably give a try to red riding hood later.

Another entertaining story in this series! It wasn’t the best book, but I still had a great time reading it. Plenty of spice throughout 🔥
I keep saying it, the audiobook voices are so good. I’ll be continuing soon with the final book, and I’m excited that it focuses on Jasper!

weird

I am obsessed with Beauty and the Beast and have been for YEARS. So, when I heard there was a retelling of it AND it was MM? You bet I ran.

We have Fuoco, the dragon and Beau our lovely human baker.

This whole review is a bunch of huge spoilers btw.

I find it extremely hard to believe that Fuoco had literally zero idea of what was going on in his territory. He flies around, sees the villages looking okay from topside and just trusts all is well? He literally never speaks to a single human? He doesn’t hear anything from his human servants speaking to each other or ANYTHING?

The way Beau complained made it seem like the entire village was run down. How did dragon daddy not spot any of this? Or smell fear that seemingly permeated the area as they’re all afraid of being outside? He can smell it on a single glass but not the ENTIRE VILLAGE?

Also, Beau talks about the village and how desperately they need help but honestly it’s not until like, 90% in which they actually help. They’re too busy banging or Fuoco telling Beau he’s going to lock him up so he can’t ever leave.

Beau goes from being terrified and wanting desperately to go home, because he WANTS to work, to being mated in like… 2 days. Fuoco offers his kitchen to use and he turns it down and yet then gets dressed up to the nines, paraded around and eats happily. Why not mention SOONER that the villagers are starving? Why not use this fabulous kitchen to bake and DELIVER THE GOODS? Reading him going back and forth got so tiring honestly.

Whiiiiiich leads me to my last thing that irked me. Penetrative sex. Beau is a virgin but apparently rimming was enough to loosen him up along with a hint of lube on Fuocos… ahem, and it was all glorious and pleasure?
Yeah, no. Not at ALL how it works.
The odd phrases mentioned (you’re so wet for me) and the SERIOUS lack of prep taken had me side eyeing the hell out of it.

I checked and it seems like this series was the first MM novel they’ve written and it clearly shows. Idk. Maybe dragon saliva is magical.
What do I know.

Temper the Flame is the 4th title in Beautiful Nightmares. HEA. Can easily be read as a standalone. Different main couple. No cliffhanger. Futuristic Sci-fantasy / PNR MM Romance. Dragons. Shifters. Fated Mates.

2OOV, 1st person. This kindle edition 284 pages August 24, 2023.

I decided to give these authors a chance and tried this. I did enjoy it moderately. Everything all right and readable, nothing big in particular amiss either that I recall. Well, except the dragon main character burning others to crisp was pretty unnecessarily gruesome. Ewww! Left a bad taste, so to say. A bit crude. Despite being a dragon shifter PNR/ Fantasy this one for some reason didn't light any particular fires either. I'm still going to give a go to another book in the series.

I don't know how to rate and review this book... It was a rollercoaster of emotions and confused feelings.

This is a beauty and the beast retelling and I really appreciated the constant refer to the original story.

It started beautifully and I fell in love with both MCs and their characterization on the spot. Their meeting was cute and all and it had me giggling. From this point on, the expectations were high.
I'm usually guarded when I read a book with fated mates and especially with dragons because they tend to be all about insta-love and I'm not a fan of that.
Sadly, this book was just that and my expectations were instantly crushed. There was a moment where I thought there was going to be more arguing, more hatred and a little bit of Stockholm syndrome, but it lasted for about 3 pages.
The characters fell in love just like that, smut smut, I love you and I'll be yours for eternity (after like a week together (?))

The rate got higher because I loved the last 20% of the story.
Overall, it was a good read but something was missing and I'm sad about that. It could have been a great book.

I am so fucking happy this one worked out!

4.2☆ I only had a couple of hiccups with the story.

Fuoco was kind and possessive and domineering, and Beau was sweet and perfect and put him in his place when he needed to. Beau is a bit of a fricken idiot, but an adorable butter tart of idiocy, so it's acceptable. Their relationship is sweet and spicy and good. ♡

Also, Jasper is Jasper, so that helps.

"Aren’t you tired of meddling in other people’s love lives?” He presses a hand to his throat.
“Me? Meddling? You wound me, flame daddy.”

🤌💋

My only issues were the curse and the bakery.

“Beau broke the curse.”
Stunned silence rolls off Fuoco. Then he straightens. “What are you talking about, Lilygully?”

Exactly. What the hell are you talking about, Jasper? Fuoco doesn't even believe in this damn curse. It was flat with no build-up and very uninspired. A better curse and more focus/details about it throughout the book would have smoothed that scene right now. They said the curse leads to Fuoco being a bit possessive and a little moody, which he clarifies that all dragons are this way, and most are significantly more so than he is, going as far as locking their mates away as a part of their horde and not letting them out. But apparently, him having fancy magic being possessive and losing his marbles after his mate almost gets merc'd is "part of the curse."

I am super disappointed that the epilogue didn't have a hint of a bakery in it or in Beau's future. That was such a sad moment. Beau stood up to Fuoco, telling him how important baking was for him and that he didn't want to be "kept" from living his life. Baking was his livelihood, his hobby, something that made him HIM, even his scent was filled with sweetness and cinnamon from all his baking, that he loved to do... and still nothing? There needs to be a bonus epilogue featuring Fuoco gifting Beau a pretty bakery in the village or them baking together in the kitchen to deliver to for the village - something that gives Beau the respect he deserves. This alone, I think, would have been enough for me to round this to a 5☆

Overall, it's very good. ♡ It's worth the read.

Part of the Beautiful Nightmares series this is the retelling of beauty and the beast in a totally different way so to speak along the same theme 😊 and like the beauty and the beast movie you find yourself starting it and watching it until the very end well this you will read until the last page has been turned. Fuoco a dragon shifter ruler of the Fire Syndicate Centuries he has waited so long for his mate whom has never come ….yet so to say he is lonely is an understatement despite being around a lot of people, he is presumed mean for the most part by the human he is around due to misunderstandings add to that the way he looks which creates fear and so he sends the enforcer/ the lower dragons families into town since they are smaller and/or don’t shift at all making them idea to working with/around humans. Beau is a baker struggling trying to help his sick father while trying to keep a rook, a few dollars in his pocket, all while struggling with his sexuality he wanted to tell his mother before she passed but wasn’t brave enough, so far hasn’t been brave enough to tell his father either, although he never guessed his parents knew and still loved him for being him but his father’s declining health forces him to steal some magic apples from lord Fuoco orchard a crime punishable by death but he kept telling himself he wouldn’t be caught. As fate would have it, he is caught but none other than lord Fuoco himself boy oh boy is he in trouble until the moment they meet. The attraction is instant, the magnetic pull can’t be ignored no matter how hard they try and Fuoco has waited too long for his mate so letting him go isn’t an option but an unhappy mate isn’t something he wants so balance is something they both have to work hard at achieving throw in betrayal from within, will his father be saved, will he realize his father loves him regardless of his sexuality, will myth creatures and humans ever coexist, will he get over his hate for dragons, and can they find happiness together?

"Then don’t treat me like a piece of jewelry you own. Treat me like an equal.”

I am weak for beauty & the beast vibes and this book perfectly captured those, while creating it's own story that gripped me instantly. The world building is stunning, the syndicates and the variety of mythical types. Beau & Fuoco are so sweet together and I enjoyed their developing relationship.

The setting was interesting and heartbreaking in equal measure, glad to see the villain's get what they deserved. Along with Beau leading Fuoco to rebuild bonds with the community, start to repair and recover the villages & towns from the cruelty they've endured without his knowledge.

I loved how Maurice shines here too with his inventions and love of magic, being able to grow and stand by his son. Along with the various supporting cast how captures those feels from the original story, I was enchanted from start to finish.

The bakery, library, jewels, orchard, apples and clothing, mirror, peach. So many details that brought these two together, the mating bond and the intimacy throughout is beautiful. Of course there are some dark moments, but still soft vibes as Fuoco adores Beau.

Lots of communication between these two even when they disagree and I loved seeing them both grow together in different ways. They bring out the best in each other and so much chemistry, the spice is great but I honestly adore the build up moments the most.

Got all of the tension and attraction, not helped by how often Fuoco is naked as has to for shifting to dragon. The scene with Beau in his claw and their visit to deliver items was so sweet.

Overall this book entertained me and hit on so many themes I love, leading to a happily ever after for Beau & Fuoco ✨

Let me just start with a little PSA: if Beauty and the Beast with a dash of Mister Darcy, a heavy pour of explicit MM spice, and a flaming dragon called Fuoco is not your thing — may I kindly suggest you pick up a nice pamphlet on Victorian etiquette instead? Because Temper the Flame does not come with training wheels or room for pearl-clutchers. This is grown-up fantasy, unapologetically bold, and served hot, heavy, and with enough sass to singe your lashes off.
This fourth instalment in the Beautiful Nightmares series takes the classic fairytale, throws it in a blender with some supernatural mayhem, queer longing, and scorching chemistry — and then hits purée. We’re talking enchanted estates, dark secrets, and of course, lusty growls across velvet-covered furniture. But don't let the steam fog up your judgment — Amy Pennza and Anna Fury have built a world that's equal parts hilarious, heartwrenching, and horned-up. Yes, I said it. And I meant it.
Beau, our emotionally pent-up Belle substitute, is charming in that slow-burn, buttoned-up way that makes you want to shake him and then kiss him. Fuoco, meanwhile, is the beastly embodiment of molten angst — with wings. But the real MVP here? Jasper. Oh sweet chaos, Jasper. Always lurking, always watching, always ready with the next delicious twist. I don’t just stan Jasper — I have real estate on Team Jasper’s front lawn, honey.
This book is campy and clever in all the right places, packed with whip-smart dialogue and a deep emotional current that elevates it far beyond your average smutty retelling. And yes, there’s smut. Glorious, filthy, consensual smut. If that makes you squeamish, the exit is clearly marked — don’t let the flaming dragon tail hit you on the way out.
Bottom line? I laughed. I blushed. I highlighted entire sections just to revisit the sass. And now I’m diving into the next book like Jasper just snapped his fingers and demanded it. Zero apologies. Now, where’s my fan? I need it.

No, just no. The only things i liked about this story were Maurice (Beau’s dad) and Jasper. Absolutely disliked the dragon dude. There’s sooo much repetition. And if i ever hear the word ‘selsara’ ever again, imma punch a wall. That word occurred twice in every 2 sentence.

Then, at 80% the sex scene came up and... listen, Beau is doing it for the first time. The dragon dude has piercings on his "big" peen. And you're telling me, there's no pain? Like, none at all?

Oh it's because he's my fated mate so i feel no pain. Bruh what? Shut up. i stopped here. Wish i could've just dnf-ed much, much earlier. i checked out one other book from this series, and it was worse.

i’m too lazy, so, just sharing my notes.

• Lord Fuoco’s voice was soft and reverent when he called me that. “Whatever is mine is yours. Anything you need, selsara, you come to me.” The dragons are rich. An oven is nothing to a male like Lord Fuoco. Whatever is mine is yours.

-- They just repeated this sentence twice. Between just 2 sentences.

This Dragon dude can apparently know what’s going on becuz the air tells him. Wtf?? Where was this air when his whole village was being pillaged by the enforcers? Talk about tone deaf. 😂

• And I learned a long time ago to listen to what the air tells me.

--And the air couldn't tell you how your enforcers abuse the villagers? God, you're lame.

• “...worn and tattered as my selsara’s.
Something’s wrong. From above, this town would appear to be cared-for and thriving. But standing here at street level, I see another story and it sours my gut.”

-- Mofo. He doesn't know the state of his own fucking kingdom. Colour me surprised. 🙄

Only thing i liked:

Dad squeezes my hand. “You are a beautiful person inside and out, son. I can see why Lord Fuoco is taken with you.”

-- His dad is soooo sweet! 😭😭

Fuoco is the leader of the Fire Syndicate who makes it his job to have peace in his land. He has strict laws and kill those who break them. He doesn't think much about the humans in his land except when they break his laws. When a human thief is caught stealing from travelers, his final words accuse dragons stealing from humans just enrich their hoards. It makes Fuoco pause to think. Recently his dragon has been getting restless and wants to look for their fated mate. He never expected to find his mate in a human who was trying to steal an apple from his orchard. Fuoco makes a deal with his mate. He will spare Beau and help his father get well if Beau agrees to live in the castle and warm his bed.

Beau is a baker with an scientist as a father. His father spends too much time on his research with little to show for it. Beau lost his mother years ago. Life is rough in their village. The fire dragons levy high taxes leaving Beau with very little to live on. His father got sick last winter and has never really recovered. The dragon enforcer who collects taxes is known for collecting more than the legal taxes through lies and deceit. When Beau is able to prove him wrong about the taxes owed, the dragon targets him. He wrecks Beau's store. Desperate Beau goes to the Dragon lord orchard and tries to steal some magic apples in hopes of curing his father. Fuoco catches him and Beau begs not to be killed. To his surprise, Fuoco claims that they are mates and makes a deal with Beau. Beau just has to sacrifice his life to live at the castle and warm Fuoco's bed. In return Fuoco won't kill him and ensure his father gets better.

He raises his chin a fraction of an inch. “Am I a prisoner, then?”
“No.” Maybe.

This book gave the most 'fairy-tale' vibe in the series so far! The Beauty and the Beast tones were strong, and I totally dug it as an m/m! I also appreciated the fast-burn approach, though I do almost wish that Beau had dug his feet in a tiny bit more and made Fuoco work for it!

It’s Beau. He’s the magic. He’s bringing humans and dragons together. He’s flourishing by my side, not locked up in a glittering tower like my most prized possession.

I loved how they and how Beau really was the bridge that humans and the Myth creatures needed! It was a little OTT that Fuoco was but if he was the spoiled lord we expected him to be, I guess it does make sense for the story!

"A private room, Fuoco? Moonlight and a roaring fire?” He moves to the table and hops onto it. “Gods, if you wanted me that badly we could have done it in the Great Hall.” He winks.

Jasper must be our book 5 pixie! I'm excited to read Kiss the Slipper to see him get his own ending, and also find out a little more about what he's been up to this whole time.

This was surprisingly so sweet. I’ve enjoyed the others in the series (book 3 I didn’t read), but I think this may be my favorite so far. I just loved Fouco’s character so much. He made mistakes, but owned up to them and did his best to make things right. He also treated Beau really well, even overcoming his instincts to lock him away to try and keep him safe.

This is loosely based on the Beauty and the Beast tale, but not exact. If you’re looking for a Stockholm story, this won’t satisfy that. But don’t let that deter you, because it’s such a good alternate version. I enjoyed the different aspects of dragons and bonding that I’ve never read before. And the story as a whole was entertaining and engrossing.

Beau and Fouco are steamy together. They have a slow-ish burn, but their attraction is instant. The sexy times are few, but the steam and passion is high. I found their relationship to be very romantic.

I also loved the side characters! Jasper and Bert are precious, and I look forward to his story. Maurice is a great supporting character, and even the bad guys are well developed despite not having a huge amount of page time. My only gripe is the vagueness of the “curse.” It’s not really a focal point, and once it’s broken, it’s just like, “Ah, congrats, it’s broken!” Honestly, it’s not clear there even IS an actual curse until that moment. And it’s not explained well even then. Other than that, I really enjoyed the plot and romance. These authors have a nice writing style with little to no errors. This has been a great PNR MM series find!

This series does not disappoint, at all. This book was amazing. My favorite of the bunch, they seem to get better and better. Beau is a baker in a small village in upstate New York, in the Fire Syndicate. He is struggling to survive in the world. His fathers health is failing and everything just keeps going wrong. Especially when the dragons that rule the syndicate seem to keep taking and taking from the village, leaving them hungry, cold and fighting for survival. Fuoco is Lord of the Fire syndicate and a dragon, he is very powerful, rich and at heart a great dragon. Seriously, this guys heart is made of gold. He wants peace in his syndicate, he wants myth creatures and humans to coexist and wants them to thrive and be happy. It hurts him when the humans fear him. He pulled back from the villagers because he didn’t want to scare them and even though he pays his servants well and treats them great, they still fear him too. And with good reason, not all dragons and myth creatures want the utopia Fuoco dreams of. Fuoco has been dreaming of his selsara (mate) his entire life and craves him. He is obviously lonely. Then one day, he finally meets his selsara, Beau, our big hearted baker who hates dragons. So clearly, these two have some work cut out for them. This story had everything you could want, two men who have big hearts, tons of love for not only their mates but friends and family, the people of their syndicate. There’s twists and turns, action, drama, and evil villains to slay. This story was a very well down retelling of Beauty and the beast, which has always been my favorite fairytale. While retelling beauty and the beast, the authors did a wonderful job bringing in their own creative spin and unique story with the little jewels of the classic beauty and the beast. On top of all that, it was scorchingly sexy and spicy AF. But also sweet and sensual. The writing was well done. A great fated mates, beauty and beast MM romance.

An MM Fated Mates / Beauty and the Beast romance retelling that I absolutely devoured!!

This story and this world pulled me in and I absolutely adored both of the main characters....
Fuoco is Lord of the Fire syndicate and is an incredibly powerful and wealthy dragon.
oohhh this man and his sweet soul...
My heart ached for Fuoco when he knew the humans disliked and were afraid of him and when he so desperately wanted mythical creatures and humans to co-exist peacefully and happily together.
And then....
When he talked about being alone how he had dreamed of and ached for his selsara (fated-mate) for his entire life. Oh My Heart.... Swoon... I was like give this strong but sensitive man Beau already!!!
Enter Beau.....
Oh how I loved this sweet, innocent, caring and determined man!!
Beau is a struggling baker trying to survive in a small village located in the Fire Syndicate.
His father is sick, with little to no supplies he's losing hope and because of their treatment of him and the villagers he hates dragons.
Well...
When circumstances bring fated-mates Beau and Fuoco together you know their HEA journey is going to be a bumpy ride.
It had action, twists and turns, drama, swoony moments, family, love, sizzling spice, characters you will hate, characters you will love and two men who will absolutely steal your heart.

Loved every minute of this read!

'Beautiful? People have called me handsome. Good-looking. But no one has ever called me beautiful. No one has ever looked at me like this. Like I’m a diamond they unearthed from the dirt.'

I absolutely love this series and the world of it. This retelling of Beauty and the Beast is no exception. As I've said, great world building, and wonderful characters. Beau hates dragons and the way they are treated by them. When one claims a late payment and steals a month's worth of profit, Beau has no money for repairs for the damage, supplies for the bakery, food, and worst of all- medicine for his dying father. With the only options being to go to Gastonia's father and be forced to marry her, or to steal from dragon Lord Fuoco's enchanted apple orchard despite the punishment of death. He takes his chance at the orchard and happens to be discovered by Fuoco himself. Fouco knows Beau is the mate he's waited centuries for, gives him what he needs, and lets him leave when one of his enforcers poses a threat. This moment is a catalyst not only for both Beau and Fouco, but opens his eyes to the lies he's been fed about the humans under his care. I was completely fascinated by this story and totally hooked. "Steal the Sky" was my favorite book in this series, but I think I have to say this one managed to overtake it. Fantastic read! 5 stars.
