I haven't read this book for many years, but my rating for it is thusly based on my 12 year-old self's impression of the book when he read an uncorrected proof copy that a librarian lent him way back in the day. And so it goes:
THIS BOOK IS SO AWESOME ZOMG LOL!
(Okay, I didn't actually talk like that when I was that age. But you get the idea.)
I loved this book when I read it. It gripped me from the very start, and I sped through it most swiftly, desperate to know how it would end.
It had super heroes, relatable teenage characters, villains, action scenes - everything a 12 year-old boy could ask for.
I remember more than anything else that I found the character with the power of super-speed to be the most awesome, which was mostly down to the way the book described his distorted perception of the world whenever he slipped into super-speed mode. It was awesome...and by the end of the book, his character gained a new significance that I could have never predicted at the beginning.
Like I said before, I haven't read this book since then, and I also never kept up with the series after that, so I don't know if it ever lived up to the promise of the first book, or if it pulled a "Maximum Ride" and went downhill horribly after that.
But I remember this book terribly fondly, which is why I now give it the highest rating that I can possibly give it - FIVE STARS!

This was a fun re-read but you have to wear your middle school hat to enjoy it.
10 years ago all superheroes disappeared. No one knows why. Suddenly, over in England, two 13 year olds discover they have super powers and the discovery starts Armageddon...
Or at least kidnapping, teen runaway shelters, and road trips with a car thief.
This is action packed and fun. The stakes rise with every chapter and the point of view jumps around enough to keep the action constant. The boys feel like pre-teens. They don't love school; they are interested in girls; superpowers excite them. The adults around them use big words and they inevitably go: "Huh?" (And then the adults provide a definition.)
It is fun. It is easy. It reminds me slightly of Percy Jackson in tone.
I probably wouldn't give it 4 stars today, but I'll leave my original review.

when i was a kid i burned through books so fast that the normal ya fare parents toss at their kids lasted only months and eventually i had to resort to obscurer works that are pretty much impossible to find now that i am an adult. a no name superhero book from the 2000s that didn't kickstart even a niche franchise is hard to google for!! i couldn't remember anything about this besides it being red and about a kid running really fast and going through it really is about as shallow as memory served, yet i recognized certain snags in my brain that've been around for about as long as i can remember. stray thoughts or certain ideas, even a sentence or two that just float around my thought processes all unknowingly sourced from this book. embarrassingly i recognize now what is likely the origin of a conversation quirk i still possess to this day in these pages!! i will not elucidate further on that. bad outside the minor impression it's left on my life. mostly dialogue and air, started reading on a lark at midnight and was finished by 2 am. i have a second book from my childhood that i've tracked down and will start (probably finish) tomorrow.

Ten years ago, all the superheroes disappeared. No one knows what happened; there was a gigantic battle against the supervillain Ragnarok, and then they all disappeared completely from around the globe. A decade later, a new generation is about to start asking questions--and getting answers.
What you have to know, and read this as, it a middle-grades book. The 13-year-old heros, the simplistic adults, and writing style make this obvious. Therefore, you cannot (alas) expect a story with a lot of nuances.
For what it is, though, it's a good read and delivers exactly what you'd expect. The protagonists are your run-of-the-mill boys who have suddenly got the fate of the world on their shoulders, there are plenty and fight scenes with liberal use of powers, etc. It's not a deep book by any means but you can finish it within two hours, so it's good for a short, light read.

I am really not a superheroes reader; however I admire that Carroll has invented a whole troupe of them for this book and dismissed them from the pages almost at once, then followed some more ordinary kids who gradually start to develop super powers.
I am not sure why super people have to be good or bad. Seems Carroll is not either, as the position of good or bad is fluid in this tale, depending on the point of view or what has just occurred. The folks are generally opposed but some of them are being used and mistreated.
Be prepared for some rather unpleasant moments, so we see that yes, people do get hurt. The action begins in England (not specified but after a chapter or two they fly across the Atlantic) and continues in the US, thus namechecking the two big English reading markets. While mostly we follow boys, we meet a girl superhero too and either boys or girls can read the book and learn - about helicopters, guns, dilemmas, identity.

This book was action packed and flowed fast most of the way through. If you're looking for a thought provoking read filled with super powers and action, I would choose a different book. If you are looking for a fast paced read that's simplistic and easy in both reading and flow without any deep emotional pull and is just fun all around, this book is a recommend for you.
Done in superhero comics fashion but in book form, The Awakening is action packed with an overall neck breaking speed. Scenes and events happen right away one after another, with minimal build up between the characters. Hence, the character building and characterization suffers from the high focus on action and plot.
There are a slew of characters. The prologue chapter starts out with a seemingly important and high action scene. Multitudes of superheroes running, flying, and tumbling about. When the first chapters starts, new characters are thrust upon the story and the time jumps forward 10 years. Moments retain no emotional qualities as characters are forced to move on to the next scene. This is the main reason why this book lost so many points.
There weren't enough of a sense of emotional impact on any of the characters. There were slow moments placed throughout the book but those moments don't focus enough of the characters being people. These moments set the characters up to be more stereotypical and in certain areas comic and pace relief without any relevant (other than adding slight at-that-moment tension and point to carry the plot over to the next big scene) details to the characters.
Because of the lack of characterization, tension and tone of the story were off in multitude of scenes. The scene where Danny accidently harms a certain someone is just an "Oh..." moment rather than a "OH. MY. [BLEEP!]" moment. Or the ending "sacrifices" didn't feel like heavy sacrifices.
The plot does carry over well quite nicely. Everything ties in together and with purpose. The pacing, though fast, worked well to connect one point/scene to another.
Overall, the book suffers from a lack of characterization and tight realistic (to the book, not as in real life) emotions and moments, but makes up for it in pacing, action, and plot ideas. This will be a quick and fun read.
Verdict: Library check out. I would recommend for comic book fans. But for my personal shelf, I would say pass.

I first read this series back in middle school, and I remember absolutely loving it. All the nostalgia came and hit me at once. Now re-reading it I can definitely tell that the book was written with the idea that middle school aged kids would be the target audience. The dialogue is watered down for younger audiences, and the plot could be a little cliche at times, but it's superheroes we're talking about. Cliche doesn't matter when it comes to anything superhero related. On to the plot....
The book is about these two kids who grew up hearing legends about the mighty heroes that once protected everyone, but the heroes disappeared years ago without a trace. The two main characters, Colin and Danny, are your average preteen kids -- until they find out that they are children of some of the once mighty heroes. Learning that they have amazing powers and trying to learn how to control them is keeping their schedules busy, until they realize that they're being tracked down by people who want to take away their powers.
Even reading this the second time, the plot twist caught me off guard. Maybe I'm just a sucker for superheroes, but amazing just doesn't even come close to describing this book.

What a fun book! I've always loved superheroes but have only really encountered them in movies, comics, or tv series so having a full novel of superhero antics was really enjoyable and a newer experience for me. I can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy! (Fingers crossed my library hold on the second book won't take much longer!)

A good start to a good series; really scratched that superhero itch I feel every once in a while. While Marvel may do their best to replicate their stories to screen most of the time now, there’s something special about finding a book that lets you read the stories of heroes and their escapades.
As I was going through this book, I could swear I was back in the early 2000s zooming through the Animorphs series as fast as my eyes could take me. There’s this nostalgic feeling of childhood as I read through it. Were the characters perfect? No, not even close. Was the story believable? For the most part I suppose. Did I enjoy myself? Heck yeah. It was fun, and I never mind a dip back into books that make me remember what my childhood was like.

This novel, "The Awakening", was very good and starts out with the superhumans attacking a battle tank. Then all the superhumans disappear and the day becomes known as Mystery Day. After that it jumps forward to ten years after that happened and a class gets assigned to write a paper on their favorite superhuman. While three friends, Brian, Danny, and Colin are talking about what superhuman they chose, Colin's sister rides up on her bike to retrieve Colin. She was in the road when a bus came barreling around the corner and in less than a blink of the eye, Danny had her on the other side of the street. No body knew what happened but Danny told Colin that he was having some issues and also told him that his dad was Quantum, a superhuman who could move really fast. Colin then realized that he was right in thinking that Danny was a super human, but later that night he all of a sudden could hear Danny and his dad on the street down below his apartment coming to get him. His dad and mom made them leave and then while being taken away by Danny's "dad", who was really Facade, a shape shifting super villain, he finds out his parent were superhumans as well. Then when they were about to board a plane to a secret facility, Colin escaped and made it to a shelter where he met Razor, who helped him get to Paragon , another superhuman. Then Max Dalton, superhuman billionaire, helped Colin get to his parents and Danny, but turns out to be working with the bad guys. While Colin did all this, Danny was asked about his powers, so the people could strip Danny of his powers because of a prophecy that says that Danny will destroy the world with a superhuman army. After that Danny met a man who was his real father and could see snippets of the future and was the one who saw the prophecy. Danny did escape but the saw the future with him leading an army but he has a robotic right arm. He returns to the facility to see the thing that is going to destroy his powers and him. With the help of Danny and another superhuman who was there at the facility, they finally destroy the machine. During this process Danny had to force his hand into the machine and become it which caused hi to lose his right arm.
I thought this novel was a very interesting twist on the old superhuman stories. This was interesting because it was kids whose parents were heroes who lost their powers not that they are aliens or were a science experiment. It also was cool and intriguing to find out what happens to Danny and if the prophecy becomes true. How the kids will hide this from their school mates and friends would be hard and bewildering to me. They're just kids unlike in the movies when the superhumans are adults and have a job and a family as a secret identity. Overall, I would recommend this book to people who like superheroes, fantasy, and adventure.

A young man soon finds he has a strange new power, but it isn't what you'd expect. In this world powers existed until 10 years prior when all of the super humans went missing. Danny and Nolan both discover there powers and ran into tons of problems along the way, when Danny finds out he could be evil and not good he tries as hard as he can to change the adults minds before its all to late. This book, although I couldn't relate, was a very good book and I never wanted to put it down. I think in all I read it three times. My favorite part was when the boys discovered there powers and there families secrets. I wouldn't change a thing on how it was written accept maybe the short chapters. I would recommend this book virtually to anyone. I think many different types of people would like this book and the rest of the series.

This book, The Awakening (Quantum Prophecy #1) was an interesting fictional read. There are a lot of surprising turns and twists throughout this action packed novel. The story is set as three best friends in their early teenage years. Two of the three find out their deep secrets from inside and are destined to use those secrets for good. The causes of these secrets put them into a complex situation of knowing the truth and doing what is right. The Awakening is an astounding read in which you should pick up and read, especially if you are into the science fiction genre and adventure. This book creates intense feelings and puts you at the edge of your seat when a chapter even ends and a new one starts. I would absolutely recommend this novel and its whole trilogy as the story gets better and better, starting with each page.

I thought it was a greeat book. The author could have went into some more detail and developed the plot and the characters more. The author started with a great depth in the plot but it slipped away throught the book and faded in the background of the action. Later in the book the plot is restored with a nice twist that i didn't see coming. I would recommend this book to anyone around the age of fifteen.

On the tenth anniversary of the celebration of Mystery Day, Colin discovers that his friend, Danny, has superpowers like the superheroes who mysteriously disappeared all those years ago. They quickly get sucked into a classic struggle between good and evil and whether humans were meant to have super powers.

Retired superheroes are now into hiding. But this won't stop their children from knowing the truth and continue the legacy. This is a fast phased and action filled story with lots of running and chasing. Ohh I can't take my eyes off the book especially with all the adventure and suspense. The book that convinced me to read books.

i liked it. it wasn't amazingly written, and the characters weren't particularly strong, but it has an intriguing plot and i think the second book would be worth reading.

This is one of the greatest scifi books ever. It's like a mix of X-Men and the Justice league. If that doesn't tell you how good it is, read the book. So good. Such plot. Many supers. Wow.

I saw someone else do this so I thought I might as well. I’m really only reviewing this for a younger version of myself who read it way back in 6th grade around the age of 12. So it’s out of nostalgia and how much I remember enjoying it. Don’t take the rating to seriously. I picked it up in the library and was so into it. I remember desperately looking for my own copy of the book and the sequels after returning it and never being able to find them. Over the years I would forget the name and try to explain terribly to people the plot so they could help and they would just look at me like I was crazy.
With that being said I eventually completely forgot about the book until today and once again I was like “what was the name of it again??” Ironically the only reason I remembered is because there is currently a book in my “want to reads” with the exact same title and it triggered a memory. So I had to come and find it. I don’t actually remember if this book is as good as I thought it was a decade ago and if I’m being honest I don’t want to reread, or pick up on the sequels just so I can keep my nostalgic love and admiration for it. I’m sure it doesn’t hold up quite as well now that am older with more reading experience and critical thinking but at the very least it’s part of my journey as a reader. It’s also books like these that remind me not every book needs to be a written masterpiece. Corny little stories for people like 12 year old me to enjoy is just as entertaining and the beauty of reading. Glad I wasn’t alone in this experience.

"The Awakening" is an awesome book full of mysterious from the sci-fi world. The story follows the two kids danny and colin. Ten years ago in a great battle, superhumans vanished - died or lost powers and blended back into society. But Danny and Colin are changing and gaining these superpowers, Danny gets the power of speed and he can move at the speed of light, While Colin has super strength. But with great powers comes great responsibility and so Danny and Colin are being targeted by a great
evil . The story shows how they get adapted to their powers and how they stop the great evil, And become the new generation of superhumans.
The book has too many OK's: "I'm going to leave you here. Somewhere safe. OK?","No! Not OK!". And thus kinda ruins like an intense moment with a not so dramatic OK . The book has too many OK's: "I'm going to leave you here. Somewhere safe. OK?","No! Not OK!". And thus kinda ruins like an intense moment with a not so dramatic OK . Quantum Prophecy; The Awakening is a book that grows on you over time. The book started out a little slow you are entranced by this battle in the beginning then suddenly reading about boys in the future. This confused me until I continued to read further and understood what was going on. One part I really enjoyed was Colin trying to figure out if Danny was superhuman. One part that was not good and was just too random was when a helicopter appeared out of nowhere and captured the boys and Colin's parents. Also, you really start to feel how young the boys were and it made the book lame is when you would have some moments like this, “Looking around the workbench Colin spotted a device that looked like a complex handgun. "What's this?" He grabbed it and started aiming it at various objects around the room. That's a glue gun." Razor replied."(Carroll 115). This book answers one essential questions because it teaches you that you must never let fate control you and that you choose your own fate. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a half action packed book and is looking to start an entire book series. This is because it is a huge series and this first book will suck you into the series.
