Fascinating and riveting, a Hall of Fame catcher--known as the Big Red Machine--offers a detailed history of America's favorite pastime, from the refinement of hitting, pitching, and fielding to keen observations on players past and present to the scandals, strikes, and unbelievable salaries. Original. 30,000 first printing.
From 1967, people considered Johnny Lee Bench, American baseball player, among the greatest catchers in history and the most valuable player of National League in 1970 and 1972 in 16 seasons with the Reds of Cincinnati to 1983.
Good basic information to build upon, even though it's really outdated otherwise. Also the author is a little but full of himself. I'm sure he was a magnificent catcher, but there's a not-insignificant amount of self-horn-tooting throughout this book.
