Noah Gantz is tricked out, powered up, and a hell of a lot funnier now that he’s survived his first showdown with his archrival, rogue test pilot Colonel Tate Collins. None of that will be enough to save his new friends when things go from bad to worse.
Because in the Gavant Reach, things definitely will.
When Wozim, the Tyton battle lord who already saved his life more than once is crucially injured, Noah and the rest of the crew must find a lost planet, brave the terrors of the local wilderness, and find a cure for their friend's worsening wounds. All Noah must do to save the Woz-man and get out of there alive is allow a piece of ancient alien technology embed itself in his flesh. What could possibly go wrong?
Will his new abilities stop Collins and the Gavant’s new secret weapon? Can he afford to pay the price when it comes due?
Dive into the second book of the Homeworld Lost series by J. N Chaney and Scott Moon to find out.
This tale is again reminiscent of Farscape, with certain events just reinforcing this 'homage'. Noah and crew continue to try and stop Collins from attacking Earth while ghost ships, artifacts of power (or are they mcguffins?) are introduced. Many perilous moments where all hope is lost somehow resolve themselves..... Unfortunately this novel does not have the same 'submersion into another world' feel of many of their other novels, making it a disappointing series. More historical context is provided and there are potential hints as to how the series may proceed once (if) Collins is defeated. Only time will tell whether these will come to fruition. There is often an 'out of the frying pan into the fire' feel to this story and while it is not as gripping as some of their other tales, you may become invested enough to find out what happens next...
Still a little jerky as to time sequence but much better than book 1. I was able to follow along this time. Better development of the characters and the story line flowed better. While after book 1 I was not sure if I wanted to read anymore, I now look forward to the last book in the series
This is well written and pulls the reader into a universe on the epic adventure... several possible side stories, and the setup leads to additional adventure to come! The concept Collins integration of various technologies is a bit far-fetched for a test pilot, and maybe that gets explained in an upcoming book. However, we start to get a view of the Seer technology and awaiting the next book to learn more of the Seer and Monitors and the roles they play.
I love all the main characters currently on Kayan. And, of course, Kayan herself!
The storyline is a roller coaster ride and full of excitement, surprises and danger. I highly recommend this series. Please note it should be read in the order written to avoid confusion and possible brain meltdown;-)
I don’t really know if this book is supposed to be humorous or not. The main character, Major Noah Gantz, is alway wise-cracking using old Earth terms that his alien crew don’t understand or appreciate. The think his way of speaking is very strange. Part of that could come from the fact his English is being translated into other alien languages and some of it doesn’t come across very well. Still, he continues to make some outlandish statements partially for his own sanity, I guess.
We still aboard the living Kayan ship with Noah still trying to get familiar with his crew. They aren’t exactly his crew since the ship’s Captain is a Hellenger named Montow. Montow does mostly differ to Noah for operational things since Noah seems to be the only one that has and idea of what they should be doing. Right now, they are surrounded by a Tyton battle group and they aren’t going to be doing anything.
It seems as if Wozim, the resident Tyson on the Kayan was being challenged by a younger nephew. It’s not like the Tyton’s to wander around space in a living starship so the fact that Wozim was even here is very strange. He’s been a loaner even while being with the others on the Kayan. He usually stays in his room and seldom meets with the other passengers/crew unless specifically summoned.
Noah had summoned him and everybody because they had to respond to this Tyton battle group if they were ever going to be going somewhere else. Here’s where they find out that Wozim is going to have to fight his young nephew for what reason no one knows and he’s not explaining anything. He just tells Noah that he needs him as his second. Now Noah is a typical Earth human. He’s average in most physical characteristics although Kayan has done some things to him physically while she saved his life. He’s stronger than normal and in better health than while he existed on Earth. But the Tytons stand about eight feet tall and are all muscle. They are breed to fight while Noah definitely is not. Still, he and Wozim are developing a budding friendship and Noah would like it to continue, so he accepts the offer.
Unfortunately, the fight gets interrupted by none other than Tate Collins has shown up with a Gavant fleet and they are attacking the nephews ships where the fight was taking place. So, the Tytons, led by nephew Kyldan, have to fight for their lives while Noah and his ship Kayan must run. The Kayan does not have offensive weapons and can only flee when her life is in danger. So that’s what she tries to do, only she’s not very successful because there is a “ghost” Kayan following her called Azok. This thing is a rouge Kayan ship that has been taught to fight and it is deadly. But, Kayan manages to escape only to find out what Tate Collins wanted to do by attacking the Tyton battle group.
Tate Collins is now a General with the Gavant. That race controls most of the Reach with an iron fist. Collins wants to go back to Earth and conquer it so he can be an absolute ruler of the Solar System. To do so, he needs the help of the Tyton battle group although they don’t necessarily agree with what he wants to do. Collins is not to be trusted. He also wants the Kayan starship the Noah and his crew occupy. Still, during the battle with Collins and his Gavant fleet, the Tyton battle group also fled and were racing away as fast as they could from General Collins. Noah realizes that he must stop this meeting between the Tytons and Collins for if they join together they will certainly be too powerful for Earth to fight agains.
Meanwhile, Wozim is badly suffering from his wounds during the fight with his Nephew and afterwards during the battle with the Gavant storm troopers. He must get some medical help and that can only be gotten on a specific planet where a very skilled and powerful Tyton resides. It’s also a prison planet! So, off they go to get Wozim’s help and hope they get there in time.
While there Noah gets involved in something he should have stayed away from and now he again has something Collins wants. He does find out that there are more of the “artifacts” he now has, but they are on a mysterious planet which legend has that none who have gone there, ever return. So, Noah develops a plan such that if he can lure Collins to this planet, then his conquest of Earth will be stopped if Collins can’t leave the planet. But, first, of course, Noah has to find the place.
As I mentioned, the crew of the Kayan are a mix of various aliens not all of which are necessarily humanoid. There’s even one that seems to be some kind of six-legged cat? I find the book kind of interesting to read although some of the humor doesn’t come off very well for the reader. I’ll probably continue on with the series although I’m not going to rush into the next book, “[Leviathan’s Bane](https://amzn.to/44SiU0o)”, now available on Amazon.
Let me just start with two things: one I don't think this series is for me but I didn't hate it (I tried the third book and gave up halfway through). And two I think I would like this series better if it were a fantasy rather than sci-fi novel. To my second point one important aspect of the story is that the main character goes from one galaxy to another with an FTL vessel. Additionally it is made as a plot point that purse is somehow significant on a galactic scale in the Milky Way ( I can't recall the exact year it's supposed to be set in but Earth is not at a type 1 kardashev scale civilization). This to me shows I complete disregard of the actual scale of galaxies and the universe and as fare as I can tell general relativity. This thus destroys my suspension of disbelief andI just couldn't unsee it. To the stories credit however the character development is interesting but I also feel like it be alien species don't quite feel alien enough in how they behave. So for me the character interaction and story would be stronger if it were to have the main character jump to another world and interact with different races there ( like Orc, elf, dwarf, etc or any other flavor of creature). This could go a long way to explain differences and yet large similarities. If the rest of the series the dress is the issues I have later in the series I'm not sure I'll see it but for me this wasn't my favorite no shade to the author or those who like this. Just not for me.

I'm loving the storyline. Smart alec remarks, puns and miscommunication - what could go wrong. Lots of action and surprising twists, still with hope for a positive reconciliation for our heroes. Relationships continue to broaden and expand with definitive signs of friendship and attachment even from Scratch. I feel theres a surprise coming there. We will see.
Significantly poorer outing. Seemed like the authors had no clue where they were going with it. Constantly stopping everything for meetings between antagonists that made no sense, then unbelievable escapes to simply rinse and repeat. Banter was still funny, but plot was terrible.
The Homeward Lost series picked up steam in the second installment. With the major characters already introduced, the story line developed more fully. Confrontations with their nemesis, Tate Collins, and his forces created new challenges. The dangers are many, and Kayan's crew is stretched to the limit repeatedly. This installment is more exciting than book 1. I will start book 3 immediately.
Two earth men stranded in a galaxy far from home. The one who arrived first trying to get enough backing to get back to earth and take it over as king or warlord. The second bonded to a living spaceship and an alien artifact trying to make friends and prevent the loss of life wherever possible. Which one will make it home again, the race for earth is on.
The worldbuilding and non-humans are fascinating, the galaxy is a grim place, and things may have gotten grimmer. The body count is extremely high in this one, which was a little depressing. I like Noah and the crew.
I'd got a bit behind in this series and I still have the 3rd book lined up to read. We get more into the characters but we still have lots of interesting action scenes. A good read on a summers day.
I did not enjoy this book as much as Chaney’s others. I felt like there was a lot of running, getting your ass kicked and running for no purpose. Move to new location and repeat. Maybe the next one will be better. If not I may not finish the series.
Keeps you on the edge of your seat. The pacing is good. The book delves into the difference in species involved across the galaxy. Looking forward to the next book.
Once again, the Homeworld Lost series doesn't disappoint. Far from it. It's a page turner. I never want to put it down. Chaney and Moon together have created a universe of immense excitement.
A lot of pointless waffle in places that add nothing to the story. Some sections leap forward skipping events which are then explained in subsequent dialogue, so why not join the story in the first place? Overall the story keeps you entertained and wanting to know what next.
Incredible story, the team is finally coming together and relying on each other. Noah keeps everything down to earth or planet. Can't click fast enough to get the next book. Keep it up Chaney!
These authors have done a great job with this series. I'll keep reading their collaboration in the next book. I can hardly wait to see what happens next.
Noah Gantz's adventures continue as he starts to learn how to deal with his newly changed body and his bond with the living starship in the far reaches of space.
