Scores are dead or injured. But who was the killer’s true target?

On a misty morning in the Lake District, two men depart by helicopter from a private estate. Below, they see the stunning views of Wast Water, with Scafell Pike ahead, where fell runners are competing atop England’s highest mountain. It’s at this moment that the pilots lose control, and crash into the mountain top. Runners and bystanders are caught in the devastation.

This is the scene that greets DI Kelly Porter. She attempts to coordinate the rescue efforts, though it’s clear many won’t make it, including occupants of the helicopter. Three are dead, and the fourth is badly injured. When it emerges that the survivor is none other than the Right Honourable Lord Donald Reilly, and the person who charted the flight was notorious billionaire Bartholomew Kennedy-Craig, the media frenzy is intense. Reilly is high up in government and his contact with the magnate provokes speculation. When it is learned that the helicopter had been tampered with, Kelly and her team can’t afford to make a single mistake. Who was the intended victim, and why? With the scrutiny of the government, the public and the press on her, just how confident can she be that the trail of evidence is leading her to the right conclusion?

Rachel Lynch grew up in Cumbria and the lakes and fells are never far away from her. London pulled her away to teach History and marry an Army Officer, whom she followed around the globe for thirteen years.

A change of career after children led to personal training and sports therapy, but writing was always the overwhelming force driving the future. The human capacity for compassion as well as its descent into the brutal and murky world of crime are fundamental to her work.

DI Kelly Porter is called to the scene of an horrific helicopter crash in the picturesque area of Wast Water and Scafell Pike in Cumbria. It is a scene I’d utter devastation as the chopper came down just where some fell runners were competing in a race. In the helicopter the two pilots are dead as is one of the passengers - the notorious and ultra wealthy Bartholomew Kennedy- Craig. The other passenger is the Right Honourable Lord Donald Reilly, high up in the government. He is horribly injured but clinging to life.

The rescue effort is difficult and dangerous and around 17 people are dead. Kelly knows media attention will be intense and she can’t afford to put a foot wrong. With air accident investigators also at the scene it soon becomes apparent that the helicopter was tampered with, or sabotaged. Who would do such a thing? And who was the target?

Kelly’s ex, Johnny, is also there investigating. They had fallen out over his testimony in a trial that just finished but this case brings them closer together again. What is unclear is what Lord Reilly was doing in the chopper with Kennedy-Craig. He was at a nearby climate conference but did not use the hotel room that was booked for him.

The media are soon making lurid assumptions about goings on at Kennedy-Craig’s sumptuous mansion in the area. The wives both seem unaffected by the news. Kelly must peel back the layers of family drama to get to the truth of this sordid case.

I’m not sure why but this book didn’t resonate with me as much as it might have. Possibly there was too much tromping around in the freezing weather and too much helicopter jargon. Nevertheless it was an engaging read and I certainly couldn’t pick whodunit until it was revealed. Many thanks to Netgalley and Canelo for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

Rachel Lynch sure knows how to write a good story. Tense and gripping with well fleshed out characters Sudden Death is another great outing for DI Kelly Porter.
I love the seamless connection between Kelly's professional and personal lives. I really enjoy that aspect of Porter books. I feel that it adds another great dimension to the whole series.
Brilliantly written it might be book 10 but it feels fresh and exciting and I do hope there's a lot more to come from Rachel Lynch and DI Kelly Porter.

I’ve read a few books in this series and always enjoy them.
Kelly is called to help when a helicopter crashes in the Lake District.
Johnny is with her when she gets the call so they both head out to see if they can help as there was a running event taking place near the crash site.
It soon transpires that a politician was on board the helicopter and the incident leaves him fighting for his life.
Kelly is asked to investigate the crash and it soon becomes clear it was not an accident.
The owner of the helicopter has passed away but his family seem to know more than they’re letting on.
This is a gripping crime thriller that I’d highly recommend.
Thanks to Canelo and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

One in a series which was new to me this book was a good one - the story, the
characterizations, the twists and turns and very importantly the setting.

In the beautiful calm oasis of the Lake District group of fell runners are on a competitive run. out of the blue a whirring helicopter descends, totally out of control
spinning to the ground in a fiery end. The death toll is heavy, the investigation
into the crash is high powered. One of the persons being ferried is a peer in tge House
of Lords, the other is a millionaire with a very unsavory reputation.

DI Kelly is in charge of a highly volatile case - as more and more lurid details are revealed
the Home Office looks for damage control and the businessman's family also has an agenda of their own, a cover up as well trying to hide that the remote area was used to provide sexual favors
involving minors. Kelly is caught in the middle, trying to find justice for the seventeen dead,
especially when it turned out to be deliberate sabotage.

The story was intriguing because it reflects the politics in every country - the corrupt and
wealthy try to get away with literally everything and very often times succeeding. Very few
Police forces can face the wrath and weight of two forces and come out victorious.

I will be looking out for more books in this series.

I do love a book series and I have read all of the previous DI Kelly Porter books and here we are at book no 10. The scenario of a helicopter crash in the Lake District would be bad enough but when it coincides with a fell race it takes the devastation to another level. Oh and then add in that the helicopter had been tampered with and you really have an enquiry to be getting on with. I could carry on with a few more instances of ‘and then’ but suffice to say there are several strands to the enquiry. By the time you get to book 10 there is a feeling of stepping into cosy slippers as you are familiar with the main characters but Rachel Lynch manages to keep it fresh and I hope there are more books to follow.

#SuddenDeath #NetGalley I love the Kelly Porter series not only for the main character but for the breathtaking scenery in the Lake District which is one of my favourite places in the UK. The storyline for this installment is quite horrific and gruesome but it is well written and fast paced with lots of action which I love. Despite the harrowing storyline I liked the fact that this case brought Kelly and Johnny closer again and I look forward to the next installment in this series.

Detective Inspector Kelly Porter is as busy as ever but, even with its recent major changes, the snatched moments with her family are her escape from the long hours she works. Added to this Kelly has been attending the court case resulting from one of the notorious cases she has recently been involved with and unfortunately things are about to get even more complicated and high profile when, as she waits for the verdict, devastating news is sent through to her.

With the national press watching her every move, Kelly finds herself looking into a catastrophic accident which left the dead and injured isolated and in need on the highest slopes of Scafell Pike as the weather closes in. With her boss receiving pressure from above, the case becomes more complicated as evidence sends the team in various directions which they hope will lead to the identity of those responsible for more than just the original incident.

In the tenth installment of Rachel Lynch's excellent series her main protagonists are still dealing with the fallout of their previous traumatic case as they are plunged into a new investigation that is a page turner from the start. The many different strands of the case are woven together seamlessly and it was very hard to put this book down as there was always something new to discover.

There were a few loose ends and changes which I hope will be followed up in
book 11 as has happened in the past. I loved how Kelly's ever changing family life provided a welcome respite from the case and the author had obviously researched all the technical details extenstensively before writing them down in an easily understood manner.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. This is an excellent series, each new storyline is welcomed, and, once again, I happily highly recommended it.

The tenth outing for Kelly & whilst it could easily be read on its own, I’ve loved how the main & some secondary characters have developed over the series. A fast paced, well written, page turner which drew me in from the start. I love how the author weaves various strands together & this is a complicated case. There are twists & turns in this well researched thriller. There are a couple of loose ends but this is usual & I’m sure they'll be addressed in the next book

A Standard, strong police procedure series, this is the first book I’ve read of Rachel Lynch. I’ve heard good reviews and thought why not give it a try.

I did struggle at the start to get into the book, it goes straight in with a trial that’s occurring- I didn’t know if this was related to the previous book so I found it hard to grasp the style of the writing and the plot. Maybe my rating could be higher, had I read from the start to get the background info. But as you read in, everything is laid out it’s clear easy to follow and cohesive.

The plot is simple and easy to follow, I really liked the writing style, but I guess I wasn’t a fan of the sudden twist in plot. You’ll think it’s quite simple but then it goes to touch on predatory/ SA stuff which was unexpected which Is why I lowered it down (no warning/ and thrown in out of the blue). I also found it slightly too obvious on who was responsible, which did dampen the rating because predictability to me means that you failed to trick the readers to throw them off, the twist didn’t work out. I did enjoyed the heavy detailed referencing to police procedures which added to the plot. Overall not a bad read, worth a shot if you’re interested.

Sudden Death begins with a dramatic helicopter crash in the Lakes, right at the time a number of fell runners are competing. At any time this would be an awful event, but once the police learn who was on the helicopter it becomes a rather different investigation.
Not having read any of the others in the series I’m not sure how much is already known about DI Kelly Porter, but this read perfectly well without knowing any other details.
The ins and outs of the situation quickly became a much bigger story than I expected. Unfortunately, the storyline was not a pleasant one and the cover-ups involved do not make for comfortable reading.

After a slow start Sudden Death became an enthralling police procedural.

That sees protagonist DI Kelly Porter and her ex-Johnny called to the mountain side of Scarfell Pike. After a helicopter crashes killing dozens on the ground who were taking part in a fell race and all but one aboard.

And as Kelly and Johnny rush to the scene. They are faced with utter devastation; and learn the two men aboard the helicopter were the Right Honourable Lord Reilly and a billionaire Tory donor Bartholomew Kennedy-Craig. And as Kelly and her team at Eden House are tasked with finding out what happened and if the crash was accidental or sabotage. The pressure from the media, the victims families, Home Office and Prime Minister mounts.

Then it's revealed the cause of the crash was sabotage.

But who would want to sabotage the helicopter and why were these two men even together?

And by answering those questions. The team learn some dark and disturbing truths and find a killer I wasn't expecting.

And with intriguing characters and a beautiful setting. This is a series I want to read more off, and it's a story I would happily recommend to others.

Carnage on the mountainside as a helicopter crashes but is it an accident, human error or sabotage? Turns out, it’s a lot more than that.

Thank goodness for no nonsense DI Kelly Porter and her hard working team.

As always this is well written and fast paced. I highly recommend this series.

Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for the privilege of reading Rachel Lynch book number 10 in the Kelly Porter series, due for release on Nov 11th. Cracking story not let up and a finale to die for, ops. Builds on previous books but I suppose could be read as a standalone as the 'social' story line does not impact upon the main story. Definably recommend those who enjoy this series and those who haven't begun to be drawn into the world of DI Porter, go read it.

Sudden Death opens with D I Kelly Porter travelling to court for the trial of Ian Burton.

We are then drawn into a dramatic scene were the Right Honourable Lord Donald Reilly and notorious billionaire Bartholomew Kennedy-Craig, the person who chartered the flight, are travelling in a helicopter. Lord Donald Reilly hates helicopters but Kennedy-Craig is insistent on flying him back to London via a scenic route over the Lakes National Park.

They are flying over the park when something goes wrong with the helicopter which crashes into the mountainside of Scafell Pike causing multiple casualties and deaths as there is a fell race in progress.

D I Kelly Porter now in court where the trial of Ian Burton from the storyline of the previous book is taking place. This was the case that caused Kelly and Jonny to break up. As the jury go out for deliberations both Kelly and Jonny receive calls – it’s the helicopter crash – they will both be needed for their advanced first aid skills. They rush off together minds focused on what they will encounter up the mountain.

It’s a mess and Kelly immediately assesses the situation and gets on with dealing with the many injured as does Jonny. The crash site is a devastating scene as the helicopter had crashed into the runners with many injured and dead. Of the four travelling on the helicopter three died at the scene and the fourth Lord Donald Reilly although alive is very badly burned and in a critical state.

The helicopter was carrying a Tory MP Lord Reilly and a well known businessman so this will be a high profile investigation with pressure from above to get results on what happened quickly and not to ‘overthink’ the situation.

Although this is an investigation by The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) Kelly finds herself in overall charge as various things come to light most particularly concerning the helicopter crash, the helicopter had been deliberately sabotaged but why?

Then two girls who are wanted as witnesses in the investigation go missing. A Private Investigator working for Lord Reilly’s family goes rogue.

Kelly and her team discover how much more there is to this investigation. It’s an investigation into the crash, yes, but as things come to light there was a lot going on with Lord Reilly and Kennedy-Craig. This is a murder investigation with lots at stake for the helicopter passengers and their families not to mention the political fallout from what happened.

Another immersive read from Rachel Lynch who not only has a wonderful sense of place – the Lake District is such a part of the story breathtakingly brought to life as always by the author – but gives the reader well plotted and well executed stories and Sudden Death is no exception. The characters are like family not just Kelly and Jonny but also their wider family and Kelly’s team who are emerging in their own right as the series goes on.

I really enjoy this series and Sudden Death is a terrific book with a really good storyline that is a little different from the usual. Rachel Lynch seems able to find those unusual angles that make the story individual and interesting. Her sense of timing is good as she builds up tension towards the end whilst keeping it all believable.

I highly recommend this book and the other books in the series (see below). I’m also looking forward to the next instalment of the D I Kelly Porter series Silent Bones.

4.5*

I have read this series from the very start and is one of my favourite reads. Hard to believe it is already at number ten in the series. This is a Police procedural series set in the Lake District of England featuring Detective Inspector Kelly Porter. I really enjoy this series, not just the main crime plot side but also the whole family story. Rachel Lynch has created really strong characters with good back stories and the right mix to make this series a very entertaining read. This is one series where I would recommend reading from book 1 to ensure you get the full enjoyment.

Two men are flying by helicopter on a misty morning in the Lake District on the same day that fell runners are competing atop England’s highest mountain. While flying over the event the helicopter loses control and it crashes into the mountain top with both runners and bystanders caught in the devastation.

On hearing the news of the crash, DI Kelly Porter immediately gets involved to try and coordinate the rescue efforts. The scene that greets her is not good and it is obvious to her that some of the casualties won’t make it, including occupants of the helicopter. It emerges that one of the survivors is the Right Honourable Lord Donald Reilly who chartered the flight with billionaire Bartholomew Kennedy-Craig. Lord Reilly is a major figure in the government and his contact with the magnate has the media rumour mill buzzing.

Investigations into the crash suggest that the helicopter was tampered with and now Kelly and her team are urgently trying to uncover the truth behind it. Who had caused the crash and who was the intended victim? With such a tragic event and high profile casualties, the eyes of the press, government and police hierarchy are on Kelly. They all want answers and quickly.

Another fast paced police procedural novel that will make excellent reading for anyone familiar with this series.

I would like to thank both Netgalley and Canelo for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

D. I. Kelly Porter is at the trial for Ian Burton. Her ex-boyfriend Johnny is the main witness for his case. When Kelly gets a call that there is a major incident happening on the peaks of the Lake District. During a race on the fells a helicopter has crashed and killed and injured many of the runners taking part. Kelly and Johnny race to the scene of the accident to help anyway they can.
When they get to the scene of massive destruction, Kelly takes it on herself to lead the rescue and investigation to what happened and help save the survivors. There was only one survivor of the Helicopter Right Honourable Lord Donald Reilly. With him on the helicopter was Billionaire Bartholomew Kennedy-Craig. Lord Reilly is a major figure in the government. When the media finds out and the lead question in the investigation was, what was Lord Reilly’s doing with the Billionaire? And why was the Helicopter tampered with? What was the motive? When they delve further into the investigation, they find out that the pair are more to them that meets the eye, and the investigation takes a more sinister turn. Can Money really get you out of trouble?
Thanks, Canelo, for a copy of Sudden death by Rachel Lynch. This is another action-packed episode in the series. Where there is a race against time to find out who was responsible for the incident on the peaks of the Lake district. I couldn’t put this down and as always, the subject matter is greatly researched.
I also in the parts about Kelly’s personal life it gives the story a more realistic turn in the story and the will she or not scenario in whether to let Johnny back in her life or not. This is book ten in this fabulous series and I can’t wait for the next one. 5 stars from me.a

My thanks to Canelo Crime for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘Sudden Death’ by Rachel Lynch.

This is Book 10 in Lynch’s popular series of police procedurals set in the Lake District featuring D.I. Kelly Porter. As with most ongoing crime fiction series, sufficient background is provided for readers new to the series. I have read and enjoyed a few of the previous ones and plan to read them all.

As the title suggests the case at the centre of this novel involves a sudden and shocking death - or rather deaths. For maximum effect I would suggest reading ‘cold’ as I did.

In ‘Sudden Death’ Lynch effectively uses the landscape of the Lake District including its lakes and mountains. She also highlights the work of the Keswick Mountain Rescue Team.

‘Sudden Death’ was again a solid police procedural combined with elements of a political thriller. Added to this is its well realised characters; especially the dynamics between members of Kelly’s team. One of the pleasures of reading an ongoing series is following the development of its recurring characters.

I was rather hoping that the gorgeous Glynn ‘The Goat’ Cortantes, one of the runners in the Scafell Round fell race, might have a bigger role but alas like Kelly and Kate I only could admire him fleetingly from a distance.

Overall, ‘Sudden Death’ and the D.I. Kelly Porter series overall is what I look for in a police procedural series.

A highly entertaining read as I have come to expect from Rachel Lynch, I have dipped in and out of this series since reading book four, and this one, Sudden Death, is a cracking addition, featuring DI Kelly Porter, and set in the Lake District. This is a series where the subplot concerning Kelly's personal life is equally as compelling as the ongoing investigations, and it isn't essential to have read all of the previous books. In the opening chapters, Kelly is on her way to the crown court in Carlisle when she gets a call from her friend DS Kate Umshaw, ringing to offer support in the high-profile case she's involved in. As the defendant is convicted, Kelly is called to a scene of a chopper that has landed on top of racegoers on Scafell Pike. The two pilots are dead but is it an accident?

Kelly is smart, capable and honest, and a tireless and determined investigator who puts everything she has into her mission to get justice for victims. Kelly is forced to work with her ex, Johnny. Sudden Death is a gripping story of the highest quality and it's wonderfully pacy, dark, and rife with shadiness though with never a dull moment. I am already looking forward to book #11, as well as catching up on those books I've missed.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Canelo via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

This is the tenth book in the series featuring Detective Kelly Porter and is set in the Lake District. I have enjoyed all the books in this series and this one certainly didn’t disappoint. The book opens with two businessmen in a private helicopter leaving the Lake District and heading back to London. They fly over the mountain fells where there are runners competing in a race. Suddenly, the pilot loses control and crashes into the side of the mountain and into some of the runners. It turns out that the two passengers involved in the crash are the Right Honourable Donald Reilly who hired the helicopter and a billionaire Bartholomew Kennedy-Craig who is the sole survivor but fighting for his life. Everyone is puzzled how they came to be travelling together and Kelly and her team discover that the helicopter had been tampered with so they have to uncover a the truth as they are under pressure from the media, the victims families and the Prime Minister. As their enquiries continue Kim uncovers some dark and disturbing truths. This is another action packed book giving us more insight into Kelly’s private life and one that had me gripped to the end. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

DI Kelly Porter book 10 and it’s an out and out belter of read it kept me gripped throughout. This is a series that I have loved from book one as each and every new instalment is different and I love the feeling of being part of Kelly’s life.
The book starts with a helicopter crash on a mountainside in the beautiful Lake District and as it plunge’s to earth it ploughs into a group of fell runners competing in a race leaving a horrific scene of death and destruction.
This is just the start of a case that goes from bad to worse for Kelly as this was no accident and more and more questions begin to form and Kelly somehow has to get to the bottom of it all.
I love the continuing back story of Kelly’s life it always adds that “real” feeling to the read she is a wonderful character and that’s all down to the brilliant writing of Rachel Lynch who never ceases to keeping me glued to my Kindle and many thanks to her for another 5 star read.
My thanks also to NetGalley and Canelo for giving me the chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

DI Kelly Porter is waiting for the verdict at a trial that has torn her & her lover, Johnny, apart when they both receive news that a private helicopter has crashed on the hills above the Lakes. Both being part of Mountain rescue they set off at speed for the site. Not only has the helicopter crashed, but it happened as there was a hill race going on & many of the runners have been killed or injured. It transpires that a government minister was on board as well as a billionaire whose reputation is far from squeaky clean- why were they together? When an observer reveals that it he doubts this was an accident Kelly is involved in a high profile case- however the families are not exactly helpful. What can of worms is she going to uncover.

I have enjoyed this series from the start although somehow I missed the last one! However I enjoyed getting back into Kelly's world. This was an exciting police procedural that as always left me waiting for the next instalment. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.

I enjoyed the first books of the series. Cumbria, with its breathtaking scenery, seems to become a character on its own. The lakes and peaks are still beautiful, but I am afraid that the latest novels are not very engaging for me. The premise itself is interesting, and the beginning is very dynamic. However, the story itself was somewhat lacking. I don't know if it was because the posse of characters associated with the helicopter crash and their families remained like shadows. Or possibly because Kelly's team didn't seem well fleshed out here. (Kate was frankly boring, and Rob barely made an appearance apart from the repeated statements that he slept in the office.) Or because I figured out who the culprit was early on. It could also be because the author has been trying to insert a lot of social commentary in her latest books, and I prefer a different genre for that. Thrillers are my way of escaping reality.

Whatever the reason, it is not the strongest book of the series. I may still give the next one a try just out of curiosity.

Another DI Kelly Porter instalment and another cracking good read. As soon as I received this it jumped straight to the top of my tbr pile. It was so enjoyable to be back in Kelly’s world.
This books starts as we last left Kelly at the cliffhanger crossroads in her personal life and the fallout of the case from that book too. While the jury is still out, literally, in both, a helicopter crash with two high profile passengers is not all that it seems and so starts an investigation that uncovers a tangled web. As always you can see that the subject matters are brilliantly researched. This series is a favourite of mine and never fails to deliver a proper unputdownable read. While perfectly readable as a standalone if this is new to you I’d urge you to read the series in order and oh how I envy you the binge read.

Having read all the books in this series, I knew I was in for an exciting crime thriller, an excellent police procedural with a compassionate and intelligent detective. This book had all that and more. Kelly Porter is reeling from her partner's betrayal, and they are living apart. When a helicopter crashes amidst a fell race on Scarfell Pike, Kelly and her partner mountain rescue expert, Johnny, are forced to work together. In this intriguing political thriller, Kelly has to use all her detective skills to get justice for the innocent victims of this case as powerful forces attempt to suppress the truth.

I love the team dynamic in this story and the balance of the personal and professional life of DI Kelly Porter. The plot is twisty, the pacing perfect, and the outcome believable.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher.

December in the Lake District and as scores of runners are taking part in a hill race, a helicopter crashes down causing mass casualties. Its not long before two of the passengers are revealed as a playboy billionaire and a member of the House of Lords and when foul play is confirmed, DI Kelly Porter and her team have to battle to find the truth and battle against the rich and government forces.
Book ten of this excellent series is everything that's expected with a combination of twists, turns and thoroughly unpleasant characters mixed in with home and family situations as Kelly balances work, motherhood and the aftermath of boyfriend's Johnny betrayal the end of book nine. Its fast paced and nicely plotted as various possible outcomes are dangled ahead of the reader before the finale.
Another strong addition to the series.

This marks the end of my relationship with Kelly Porter.

I feel like the editing on these books is getting sloppier, and the overall main themes repetitive. The "love you, love you not" thing with Johnny drives me up the wall as well.

Johnny, for all that he is supposed to be a PTSD counsellor, has no idea how PTSD even works, to the point that at one moment in the book we have him admitting that not only armed forces can get PTSD, but police can too. Like, *really*?

Also, this is just a small niggle on the big scheme of things, but the Spanish word for male goat is not "cabro". A simple google search could have helped there.

All in all, disappointing, particularly since I really enjoy having books set somewhere I know and love, and Cumbria does come through in this series, but I just can’t stick to it.
