A superb and detailed biography of such a short life. Duncan Edwards' brilliance and talent is legendary at Manchester United and this book outlines exactly why the reputation was well-founded. At a dinner many years ago, I heard Bobby Charlton describe Edwards as the best player he'd ever seen. Considering the talent Charlton played alongside and against this sounded unbelievable. This book, rightly, places the extraordinary talent within the context of junior football and then the legendary Manchester United youth teams of the late-1950s. It traces Edwards' career through an unbelievable amount of games for United, England's various youth teams, and the Army (during National Service). Not only is it comprehensive, it is woven brilliantly into a story of an exceptional player who could have achieved everything in the game.
Edwards' death at Munich is treated sensitively and does not forbode or dominate the book as the story progresses to February 1958. This alone is a reason to read as it stands as a testament to the man and not the the legend.
Beautifully written biography on an incredibly talented footballer tragically lost at the age of 21. Forever wonders what he might have become, might have achieved had Munich not altered the course of history for this football club and its much beloved Busby Babes.
As a huge united fan from a different era it was an amazing read about how the tell of united academy started and obviously the very talented Edwards and what could have been!
