What a joy it was to read all about the Trojan war.

I can’t believe I’m only the second reviewer! The first reviewer said it perfectly, this is really a distillation of the Iliad and the Odyssey. Believe it or not, as into Greek mythology as I am, I have not read either of them, though I’ve read parts of the Iliad.

But this was gloriously written. It starts from the beginning and goes to the bloody and tragic end.

All the main cast members are in here.

I must say Hector who has always been my favorite and Archilles interactions are every bit as fascinating as can be.

You know, this is one story that you always wish you could just sort of reach into and alter the ending .

After all these years, the Trojan horse always sends chills up my spine without fail.

Anyway, not a detail is overlooked here.

We read about the golden apple of discord, and about Aphrodite and Athena and Hera and Paris and of course his love story with Helen, although I must admit, that’s the only thing that disappointed me.

Helen is barely in it which kind of bewildered me, and that was the one thing I didn’t like, but it’s a little thing in a sea of great things.

The other scene I love is when the king slips into our Archilles tent at night and begs for his son’s body back. When I saw Troy the movie with Brad Pitt as Archilles and Eric Bana as Hector, I liked it, even though the movie was absolutely savaged by movie critic, Roger Ebert, who I usually agree with. But that scene was just done so well, and it was so great to revisit this story.

I’ve read about it as a kid, of course because I’ve been a Greek Mythology fan for as long as I can remember but when it’s done well, a great tale is always worth revisiting.

It was vivid and imaginative and bright and colorful and tragic and heartrending and interwoven with love and fierce loyalty and loss and dreams . I just can’t give enough props to this wonderful story. If you are a fan of Greek mythology, and in particular. The Trojan war you have got to read this.

A good distillation of the Iliad and the odyssey. I read this to get an overview before reading Circe by Madeline Miller. I plan on reading some of her other collections. Quite a few typographical and grammatical errors however.

I think this was a great collection of Greek Mythology stories rehashing stories from The Iliad and The Odyssey. The stories are simplified a tad for younger readers, but not so much that an older audience can't also enjoy it. I dare say I even learned a few things! If Greek Mythology is not your string suit, or if you want a brush-up of the stories, this very well may be the book for you!

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
