All Things Real and Mythical

Rate this book
Charlotte has everything she ever wanted, or so she thought. A hard week working as a veterinarian may push her over the edge. Until she finds herself in a new realm given three weeks to save a life. Her skills will be tested as she's confronted with animal patients unlike any she's ever seen.

Upon discovering bigger issues in Sagan, Charlotte is faced with the possibility of saving more lives than just one, an opportunity she can’t refuse, even if it means risking herself. With every day spent in this world of mythical creatures, Charlotte starts to fall for more than just the magic around her…

Levi has spent the past thirteen years in Sagan. He has no intention of getting further involved in the problems arising around him or with the new mortal. However, Charlotte may force his hand. And his heart.

Wow! This book was amazing. I loved the story and how immersed I was in this world. The characters are great, and I am so excited to continue their journey in the next books. Also, this cover is just gorgeous.

Reviewing an arc I received. This was a cute debut novel. I loved the veterinarian healing mythical animals (and some other characters) idea. Perfect for anyone looking for a quick fantasy/romance. However, I felt like the arguments that the FMC and love interest had were childish and it made me lose interest around the 70% mark.

⚠️Trigger warning: suicidal thoughts and partner rape (within the first few chapters), and animal harm

Really enjoyed this book and it was a quick easy read despite having depth. I heard about this book when I saw an Instagram video of someone receiving it packed with unicorn glitter and I had to read it! As an emergency RN I loved the medical aspect. This was different from other fantasy books, especially as I haven't previously read anything from a vet's perspective. Addressing mental health in the characters' quests was great. I felt like there could have been a bit more world and character building, at times it felt a little like things were jolting forward a little bit but I liked the characters and really enjoyed the story! I am totally impressed that the author wrote this in vet school! Looking forward to reading more of her work in the future.
Also, this book has the best "About the Author" that I've ever seen.

Look, you know me, you know I worked in the veterinary field for about six years and was burnt out for probably three of them. My mental health was at an all-time low during that period. But how? I got to play with kittens and puppies all day every day! How could I be having panic attacks at work on the regular when I had such a fUlLfIlLiNg CaReEr?

Because we're constantly judged and misunderstood by the general public. Because we're surrounded by death. Because wE'rE JuSt iN It FoR tHe MoNeY. Because of the rapidly growing anti-science movement that thinks vaccines give dogs autism. Because we're accused of not caring about animals when caring for animals is literally the only reason anyone ever enters vet med. Because after six years, I had nothing in my savings account and all my requests for raises, overtime pay, and supplemental help were denied.

So when I saw that there was a romantasy book WRITTEN by a vet and the main character was a vet? Yeah, I added to cart.

The beginning of All Things Real and Mythical was painfully relatable. The conversations Charlotte has with her clients were so authentic, just like conversations vets have every day in their exam rooms. The overwhelming STRESS that Charlotte feels, the constant fatigue, girl I have BEEN there <3
I just wanted to reach into the book and wrap Charlotte up in a big hug.

But the middle of this book falls apart so dramatically. I can't stand that so much romantasy has just become a checklist of tropes and authors feel the need to pack as many as possible into their stories. We got the one bed scene, we got the "who did this to you" scene, we got the cringey pet name (I'm sorry but every pet name I've come across just makes me want to vomit, it's nothing personal). I did appreciate that this wasn't yet ANOTHER enemies to lovers book, but there was a LOT of "banter" that just made our main characters (28 and 31, believe it or not) sound like middle schoolers. The world building has some potential, but nothing is really developed or given space to breathe. Unfortunately the side characters are pretty flat and indistinguishable, but I believe they can be developed more in sequels.

The ending was pretty sweet, although there are some big unanswered questions. Charlotte's mental health crisis is given a resolution and I liked that we came full-circle there. For a debut written by someone in the freaking MEDICAL field, it's a great start. I think I will check out the second book when it comes out.

I actually enjoyed this more than I originally thought I would. Will 100% read the sequel once she writes it.

The fact that she wrote this while in vet school is amazing because medical school of any kind (especially vet school) is a struggle and to be writing a book on top of it. Amazing. Please never quit writing!

There were some lines where all the words were mashed together like her editor (if she had one) wasn’t putting as much effort into it as the author was. Levi bothered me and made me roll my eyes multiple times and the story was jumbled at times but otherwise i loved the creatures and characters as well as how she made all the accurate representations of emotions those in the veterinary community feel. Myself included.

I forgot to keep track of all the pages and quotes i loved but the starfish story really spoke volumes. Also her about author page being written in the perspective of her dog is adorable in the best way.

This was a wonderful fantasy book. I loved the character development and the world building. Charlotte is a veterinarian who doesn't seem to thrilled with her life. Something extraordinary happens and she is transported to another world where she learns more about life, love, and family. There is plenty of spice within the story, but it is not the main focus which I appreciated. I think Poppy may have been my favorite character (read the book, she might be yours too). I'll definitely be recommending this to friends and strangers alike!

Magical

This book was recommended to me by a friend and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy. The female main character struggles with standing up for herself with her staff and boyfriend until she is transported to a magical land where she saves the life of an animal without question she is given a task to complete. To find out if she completes the task or not you have to read the book. 5\5 stars.

This is a great debut novel. While the writing at times felt amateur and a bit of telling and not showing, overall it was still great. One of the more original ideas for a fae fantasy novel. This author has the wonderful ability to make their writing completely suck you in (and who doesn’t love that type of book?) I look forward to the next book.

I loved the FMC but the world building and background was a bit slow for me. I felt like less time could have been spent on that and more on character development but the storyline and plot kept me engaged.

Wow. Just wow this book is such an easy read I felt like I was in the story watching it all unfold. The way mental health is addressed is a nice touch. And can we talk about that slow burn because wow it had me on my toes waiting and it exceeded expectations.

Overall, I enjoyed the book, and characters. It definitely did a job showcasing the problems that cause mental issues in veterinary medicine. I liked the world building and interesting concepts. I did feel that at times, there were pacing problems.

Sagan might be my new favorite fantasy world.

I loved Charlotte and Levi, their chemistry, their banter, even their stubbornness. That author has written amazing banter between them.

I enjoyed the mass amount of character development and can't wait to see how it plays into the new/ongoing crisis brought up towards the end.

I'm already chomping at the bit for books two
