My dad has been the coach of the Charleston Coyotes for as long as I can remember. All the time I’ve spent in ice rinks has taught me two things:
1. I will NEVER date a hockey player.
As a single mom, it’s not like I have time for romance anyway.

2. Nothing smells worse than hockey players after a game.
And I work as a dog groomer, so I have experience with smelly animals.

It’s amazing how quickly my rules are forgotten when Darius walks into my pet salon.

Tall, dark, and tattooed with rippling muscles and a perfect smile must be my kryptonite, because I find myself agreeing to go out with him.

But we’re both keeping secrets we’re not ready to share. And when they finally come out, everything changes between us.

I do my best to keep my distance from him.

Yet, the more I fight my feelings, the more I find myself wanting the winger.

This is a standalone feel good low angst opposites attract sports romance where the swoony Greek hero falls first and hard for the single mom heroine.

4⭐
Genre ~ sports romance
Series ~ Charleston Coyotes Hockey, #1
Setting ~ South Carolina
Publication date ~ April 25, 2023
Est Page Count ~ 204
Audio length ~ 5 hours 32 minutes
Narrators ~ Ellie Gossage, Ash Beverly
POV ~ dual 1st, present tense
Featuring ~ single mom, NHL player, coach's daughter, he falls first, some steamage

Darius (26) & Ellie (24) meet when she accidentally rainbow colors his dog at her pet grooming shop. He's not too bothered by it, so he asks her out on a date and that's the beginning of the flying sparks.

Absolutely loved the dynamic between Ellie and her daughter, Tillie's, father, Ryan. They are what co-parenting should be all about.

There was some sweetness, some good chemistry and just a smidge of drama when she finds out his profession is one she loathes, but overall really enjoyed my first experience with this author and I'll probably be back for more.

Narration notes:
I thought they both did a great job.

A good start to a new series. When a mix up has Evie giving Darius' dog a bit more than just the simple bath and nail clipping, sparks fly. For Darius it's refreshing to have someone that likes him for just him and not the fact that he is hockey famous. Evie's situation is a bit more complicated, as she has a daughter and for the past several years been busy raising her and getting through school. The two decide to give what they have a try, but neither of them knows that the world they are in is smaller than they think. What happens when the truth comes out?

Like I said a good start to a new series, filled with drama, a few awe moments, and some nice naughty bits. I do feel that the ending was a bit rushed, but that's just IMO. I give this 4 stars.

Hmmm, this is an okay read, so-so actually. I'm just not feeling the story I guess.

MCs:
- Darius, 26, hockey player
- Evie, 24, assistant in a pet salon, single mom

Book info:
- No cheating, opd, third act breakup
- Sports romance (hockey)
- Single mom
- Instant attraction
- Coach's daughter
- Cute daughter and adorable pitbull
- HFN (engaged)

They met when Darius picked up his dog from the pet salon and Evie accidentally mixed up the services for the grooming that she ended up painting the dog's fur. He was annoyed for a few minutes but then Evie broke down and apologized for the mistake. He took pity on her then he invited her to dinner cuz he felt bad for making her cry.

Two weeks have passed and he can't get her out of his head. So he decided to show up unannounced to the salon and invite her again to dinner. Which she agreed to anyway, and that's the start of their romance.

This is an instant attraction, though it took two weeks for them to meet again. After that night they tried to see each other as much as they could. She's a single mom and he's a hockey player so they need to match their schedules. They made it work for another two weeks, by this time both of them were already falling for one another.

Then the shoe drops when Evie finds out that Darius is a hockey player and what's worse is, he's playing for her dad. She and her dad have a strained relationship, mainly because the dad is an asshole who always puts hockey first. Anyway, back to the revelation, they fought for like 5 minutes then made up immediately. And they dropped the love bomb after their closet rendezvous.

Idk, there's nothing really intriguing in the story. It was safe and the drama was minimal. Aside from the hidden identity, which was resolved quickly. The only issue that came up was when her father threatened to trade Darius to another team. And this again was concluded immediately when Evie warned her dad that he wouldn't be able to see his granddaughter anymore if he pursued the trade. Of course, her dad backtracked and made it clear that no trade will be happening anymore.

Overall, this is a safe read. There were some parts that were a bit flat, but I have to say this is overly sweet and adorable, freaking cheesefest if I'm being honest. The love bombing could've been toned down, imo. 😅 Anyway, this is still a good and short read, 200+ pages.

Notes:

- Evie is a single mom, she and Ryan (her ex) are living in a duplex and have been the best of friends when they realize they're not going to work romantically. I loved their relationship and how they are as co-parents. This may be bothering for some that the ex is in the picture, but if it helps, after the second birthday of their daughter, Ryan realizes he's gay. Hence, the reason they broke up and decided to be friends instead.

- She has never been with any other guy aside from Ryan 🤦‍♀️ She's been celibate for 5 years and didn't try to date anyone.

- As for Darius, I don't think he's a manhoe. He's actually into dating but he also said that he did try having hookups before. But seeing his parents love and successful marriage, he wanted that kind of life for him that's why he didn't go wild with women.

- As for celibacy he only said that it has been awhile for him, but he didn't elaborate how long. Probably a few weeks, idk.

This was the perfect start to a brand new series! I couldn’t put it down.

I loved literary everything about everything in this story. I love the characters and their personalities. I love how Evie and Darius had their first meet. I love how family is a big part in the story. So many things in this story make it relatable which helps you as a reader connect with the characters.

I simply adore Evie, she is so down to earth and funny. I love that she and I have the same college degree lol! Little Tillie is the cutest and sweetest and I love the relationship she is able to have with Ryan.

Darius is awesome and I love he and Evie’s chemistry right away. He is fun and just gives off that easy going guy vibe right away. He is easy to love right away along with his whole family!

Jacob’s books are just so wonderful to read. Every time you start one you know you will get everything you love in a romance book! Wanting the Winger was amazing and I can’t wait until the next!

Great start to a new series

WTW is a sweet read for the most part. Darius is such a dirty gentleman. Evie is a sweet single mom and down to earth. I loved the couple but I loved the guys talks more. Can I just say Ryder and Murphy are hilarious and gross. I'm still laughing at chapter 14.
This book gave me so many feels. I'm still quite perturbed at Coach and Not getting over it anytime soon.
Great read, Great couple, Great story line. Great start to a new series.

Skating to love!

When Darius goes to the groomers to pick up his dog, Brutus, he meets Evie. She intrigues him and he goes back to see her. After a couple of dates, they find themselves falling for other. Both are hiding secrets that could alter the relationship. When Evie attends a ball in her father's honour she bumps into Darius and their secrets come out. Darius plays hockey and Evie's father is his coach!
Will the revelation cause problems or is it just another hurdle to overcome? Will Evie's daughter be alright with her mum dating?
The chemistry between the two is hot and burns brightly. I love that characters from Jacob's other books pop up.
Jacob is a one click author for me and this book just cements that!

“Do you know how many times in my life I’ve said I will never date a hockey player? Way to make me a liar, Darius.”

Wanting the Winger is the first book of the new ice hockey series by Jacob Chance. This sports romance is a quick and easy read, that leaves you with a smile on your face. Lovable characters that have you laughing, swooning and feeling a bit teary at the injustice life throws in our path. Tillie stole the show though, an adorable seven year old little girl.

Darius is a Greek momma’s boy, with loving parents who have shown him what love should be like. He play’s hockey for the Charleston Coyotes and is always recognised as a player. When he gets his dog washed he doesn’t expect to find a girl who is not only oblivious to his stardom, she is beautiful. So in an effort to get to know her he omits his career path so she can see the real him. However his plan backfires on him.

Evie has had to overcome obstacles and her career path hasn’t panned out the way she planned. Being a dog groomer is a temporary stepping stone, but as an artist she loves to work her craft on the pups. She created a beautiful piece, but it was on the wrong dog and the owner was shocked, but surprisingly he wasn’t grumpy. Her mind kept drifting to the greek god who took it on the chin, but she didn’t have time to find anyone interested in a relationship with her baggage.

What happens when a hockey hating girl and a pro hockey player meet? Sparks fly. Now to be fair Evie had no idea who Darius is and what his does for a living. Darius is instantly interested in the women who gave his dog rainbow leopard print design. He is more intrigued when she has no idea he is a pro athlete on a top hockey team.

This is a great sports romance. It’s got lots of emotion, charm, humor, and spice. This series starts with a bang. Darius and Evie over comes some big obstacles (kids, coaches, life) but they stand strong with each other.

I adore Evie, she has made a life for her and her daughter. She and her ex found a healthy way to co parent their daughter. She overcame adversity from her parents and from having a child so young. She also finds her voice to stand up for what she wants and needs from those around her. Her and Darius have such a wonderful relationship. The way he steps up to be a step dad for Tillie will make you swoon.

I could not put this book down. I loved every moment. The Charleston Coyotes series has started with a bang. Very excited for the rest of the series.

Wanting the Winger
Jacob Chance

Darius is a successful hockey player, he's at the top of his game and him and his team working their way to the top.

Evie works at a pet spa and loves seeing all the pets come in for their baths. Sometimes there's stubborn clients, sometimes you accidentally do more than what the client wants to be done.

Darius has a happy and loving family, he keeps his work and family separate.
Evie has a family that shows no love for her or decisions she makes.

I love the storyline about how Calista (sister) barged in on Orion and Sheryl Noe lolololol then the information Orion finds out from his brothers Christos and Darius had me laughing.

I would love to read more stories with
Orion, Christos, Calista, Ryder, Murphy, Wendy, Kaiden, Ryan and most of all the cutiest characters of all Tillie and Three I love all the characters in this book and hope to have them show up in future books.

I highly recommend this book

Evie single mom to Tillie, works at a dog grooming place, and hates anything to do with hockey. Darius a hockey player, has a dog named Brutus, and when he meets her there was a mix up with what he wanted for his dog. After they go for coffee, they both can't get the other off their minds. After a few more dates and a run in with her a bouquet where she finds out who he is and he finds out that she is coaches daughter. After they come to understanding and stay together they have a few more obstacles to overcome. Tillie and her father. Will they be able to work everything out together? Will they have what it takes to blend a family and work and more?
I totally adored this book. It had the right amount of everything and so much more. Tillie and Brutus still the show how cute and sweet they are. Darius and Evie will steal your heart and make you fall for them. Love seeing the Pirates and love all the new characters. Can't wait to see what happens next.

Need a feel good, spicy, what I call palette cleanser read? Wanting the Winger is the perfect story. All the feel goods in this single mom, hockey romance.
Darius is the perfect hockey book boyfriend. Understanding, supportive, loving and hold on tight because Darius makes you swoon pretty hard. He’s the perfect match for single mom Evie, who hasn’t always had the easiest life but she is strong and follows her dreams thanks to her Winger. The supportive cast in this book makes you fall in love a little more. Tillie and Brutus are so darn cute and it was good hearing from the gang of the Charleston Pirates.
Give your mind a reset and read this five star hockey romance.

Definitely worth the read

I absolutely loved Evie and Darius, period point blank. I love single parents and sports romance books, and this was both. I agree with Wendy, Darius and Evie had the cutest meet cute like ever. Evie is smart, independent, and beautiful. Darius is strong, protective, funny, and sexy. These two were made for each other. I also loved seeing characters from other books make a cameo. I can't wait to read read more books in this series. This was one great way to start off a new series.

Wanting The Winger kicks off a new sports series and it's a great start.. Evie's father is a coach for the hockey team called Charleston Coyotes and she has rules set to never date a hockey player and her opinion is that they smell bad. Evie works as a dog groomer and this is how she meets Darius which culminates in a funny mix up.
As they get to know one another feelings grow very strong but there's an unspoken secret the pair hold which could potentially implode.

There's some fab side characters with Tillie and Brutus the dog. We also see a crossover with past characters from a previous sport's series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a light entertaining read. Darius and Evie were great protagonists and they're on my list as favourite book characters. I'm looking forward to reading subsequent books in this series. Great start with Wanting The Winger.

If I had to pick one thing that Jacob Chance does well it’s writing sports romances. We’ve read his football books, and we’ve loved them, we are back in South Carolina but it’s hockey’s turn. A whole new team, and more stories for us to fall in love with!

Darius and Evie’s story is sweet, steamy and pretty drama free, which is a refreshing change of pace for the more avid romance readers.

This is what good romances are all about, just an honest story of two people falling in love. Oh and there’s HOCKEY too!!

Jacob just writes stories I love to read, and if you are new to him this is a perfect place to start!!

Off The Charts

I am so in love with these two. Dar and Evie are a phenomenal couple. From page one to the end has you rooting for them. I will say I was a little nervous in the middle, but the amazing author took away those silly nerves. I want more of the secondary characters as well as the main couple. The writing and flow of this book is top notch. I beyond recommend this book and author.

So good!!!

Jacob really knocked this out of the park. I loved that he mixed in the Pirates that we have grown to love. I loved reading about the new characters we get to meet. I loved what he had happen to the dog. Tillie was super adorable and a great little add in. The connection between Darius and Evie was super good too. The scenes were just right, no over the top unbelievable stuff. Overall could not put the book down and can't wait to see which one he writes next!

I’m in awe of how many emotional events happened that brought these characters together. I enjoy a good hockey sports romance and Wanting The Winger (Charleston Coyotes Hockey Book #1) definitely hit the spot! I just loved Darius and Evie from the moment they had their meet cute encounter, throughout their relationship and to the very end. Their story was sweet, adorable, lighthearted and their chemistry was everything. It was also nice that some characters from Jacob Chance’s other sports romance books made appearances. Darius’s teammates were hilarious as well and I’m looking forward to reading their books.
