This was quite good for the genre, I find relationship books can't really be riveting, but this one was written by a married couple, each narrating a chapter and alternating. Sarah's reading was better than her husband's, Matt.

I found attachment style was described well here, as I'm always very interested in the motivations behind this, it sets us up in a major part of the way we carry ourselves and the way we are.

The authors talked a lot about the honeymoon phase and infatuation, and these feelings waning, and the importance and the need for hard work to make love really last, and to properly work on our relationships. (I listened to a Danielle Steel novel soon after, and it does annoy me that authors such as she build up the unattainable and unreal portion of relationships. I digress).

Enter the third entity, the relationship, which must be looked after to sustain the whole of the relationship. These audios are not always exciting and I am sure I missed some info, so I wouldn't be against borrowing a physical copy from the library to flick through one day.

Recommended, the text is straight forward and not unattainable.

I listened to this via the BorrowBox platform provided by my local library.

I enjoyed this book as an audio book, as I think a lot of readers did.

I found that the book covered such a vast range of topics yet explained things concisely and with real example from couples. It enabled me to connect to each chapter. And speaking of chapters; it was laid out really compactly and orderly, with each new topic arranged by a new chapter.

For the audiobook, the couple took turns narrating each chapter, which kept things fresh. There were some chapters that really spoke to me, others that didn't, but like they said, relationships are a journey and not every chapter is going to be where you're at, but I still found it all interesting and something to keep in mind. Even if I had already known about something before, hearing it laid out with such clarity and with examples helped to see how it applies to my life.

In short, I think this book is great for anyone no matter at what stage of their relationship they're at - be it in their honeymoon, a few years in, or 30 years. Or even if you're single and want to understand what a healthy relationship looks like and the work it requires to keep going.

The book takes into account both sides of the partnership. No one person is more accountable than the other. Both partners need to do the work to keep the relationship going. And at no point, unless there's obvious abuse, does the book give direct advise on what you should do (stay or leave) - they simply guide you to look at what you're doing now, what your significant other is doing now, and suggests new perspectives. I find that refreshing.

The audiobook would have benefitted from some voice actors to bring some energy to the content. There is a chapter called 'Building eroticism and love in the space between us' which I thought would be a stimulating subject but the narration made it supremely boring rather than insightful.

Will definitely be referring to this if I do decide to become a couples counsellor in the future. Really liked how it was written by a husband and wife too and how they were willing to share their personal experiences.
