A laugh-out-loud cartoon-filled adventure for 7+ readers, featuring the world’s funniest fairy, from the bestselling author of The Land of Roar. Perfect for fans of Loki, Tom Gates and Wimpy Kid
Ridiculously funny and packed full of cartoons on every page!
Before you read my diary here is some stuff you need to know:
1 I’m 11 years old 2 I love drawing cartoons 3 I have two pet rats called Tony and Noah. 4 I also have a FAIRY called Stink . . .
Danny Todd is desperate to be normal and fit in at school so he isn’t happy when he opens a fairy door and a REAL fairy flies out. Stink turns Danny’s life upside down. She hides in his hair, swims in his cereal, rides his rats and accidentally shrinks his best friend.
Danny HAS to get rid of Stink, but she won’t go away until he’s helped her earn gold nuggets to get new wings. Can Danny help Stink do a good deed or is he going to be stuck with his fairy forever?
I have always loved reading and I studied English at university just so that I could read a bit more. Next I found my way into secondary teaching and discovered that I loved it too: I got to read more books, show off and hang out with very funny teenagers. What a great job!
Teaching English also encouraged me to write. Soon I had planned and started lots of different stories, but they were all abandoned and shoved to the back of a drawer. Then, one day, the plot for Flirty Dancing came together; Bea’s story was so alive it was like a film running in my head and I knew it was a story I would finish.
Over the next few years, various exciting events distracted me from Flirty Dancing: I got married, travelled the world, was chased by an angry elephant (and a pack of dogs) and I had two babies. While I was sitting on trains, swimming in the Outback and raising two crazy girls, I kept thinking about Bea, and her friends, Betty, Kat and Pearl, until I realised I had planned three more books.
In 2013, after attending the Winchester Writers’ Festival, I plucked up the courage to send Flirty Dancing to Julia Churchill, a brilliant children’s fiction agent at A.M. Heath. With dazzling speed I was then signed by Bloomsbury to write the four books in the series.
Not published until March 2023 I read an advance review copy of this delight of a story!

What happens when your sister buys you a fairy door for your birthday and your it summons the worst of all the fairies, S.Tink?
My daughter and I whizzed through the audiobook. We loved the mischief of S.Tink and found all the main characters to be laugh out loud funny. We really enjoyed the diary format and the lists Danny wrote. Great short and snappy chapters. The narration was enjoyable but I think S.Tink would benefit from her own narrator. Men doing an impression of a female voice when they narrate, tends to grate after a while. I hope the author writes more in this series and if so, we will definitely back to read them.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for an advanced copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Hilarious misadventures of Danny and his birthday gift from his 3year old sister, mischievous fairy S-dot-Tink. Perfect for encouraging readers of 8/9+ to pick up a book for fun. My full review is here: http://vsviewfromthebookshelves.home....
Absolutely love this book! My son's (9) favourite story by far! It has many laugh-out-loud sections and has a wonderful writing style. The cartoons add just the right amount of imagination inspiration for children as well. I can highly recommend for anyone!
This caused me many giggles - both from the words and illustrations! I would not like S.Tink to be my fairy: she’s a bit wild for me, ha. I think kids are gonna absolutely adore this!
Are you one of those people who think that all fairies are good? I hope not because if you are you’ve been bewitched by the naughtier fairy-folk and might not like Jenny McLachlan’s new story. You see Stink is the worst. fairy. ever. Yes, you read that correctly, yes, the full stops are for emphasis. Stink really is that bad. Stink is the title of the book and the name of the naughty fairy who, along with Danny the (un)lucky human she attaches herself to, is one of the main characters. If you are ready to be shocked by Stink’s behaviour and ready for the first hilarious book in a brand-new series then this is the book for you.
Put aside all pre-conceived ideas of fairies being sweet, sparkly and lovely, Stink, we are about to discover is none of these things. She is the rudest, naughtiest and possibly smelliest fairy that there has ever been, in any land. Forget wands, pretty dresses and sparkles, with Stink what you will get is mess, pranks and a diet of woodlice and rats. Can you imagine Danny’s horror when Stink flies out of her fairy door and attaches herself to his hair? Danny knows straight away she is going to be trouble but it seems she needs his help to do a good deed and win her silver wings. Danny of course will do anything to send her back to fairyland, can the naughtiest ever fairy learn to be good?
While most fairy stories will find a market almost exclusively with girls, I feel this one will not see boys squirm around.
Danny is rather horrified of course, to discover an ACTUAL fairy one day, especially when he learns it won't be so easy to get rid of her. But she's not exactly Tinkerbell or a fairy story example of her kind - well her name is Stink for a start. And she's rather troublesome, cheeky and eats woodlice. He can help her earn her silver wings with a good deed though... if she doesn't get him beaten up first.
I listened to this as an audiobook, and found the voice of Stink reminded me quite a lot of the Monty Python team when they dressed as women, which had me laughing a bit. It is a good listen though, just a few hours long and will hold interest.
Silly but entertaining, with some truly repulsive neighbours/bullies and lots of less-than-fairytale escapades.
For ages 5-10.
With thanks to Netgalley for providing a sample audio copy.
This was just such a fun, silly story with really great and vibrant characters. My children and I loved listening to it (it was narrated really well too!) because it was just the kind of gross and ridiculous humour that kids enjoy! I'd definitely recommend it for primary school aged children that have otherwise enjoyed things like Horrid Henry and the like — it's full of shenanigans and lots of children misbehaving and all those things kids love to see!
Thank you so much to NetGalley for sending me an audio copy of this book!
Lots of fartastic fun in this highly illustrated adventure, featuring Danny and Stink, with help from a little sister, lying best friend and a grumpy neighbour. Featuring trolls, gnomes, chocolate fountains and a raft race. Plenty of humour and fun illustrations for younger middle-grade readers
